The country categories were rename to media in foo here Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2016_February_10#Media_by_country just after Southeast Asian media was created. WikiProject Banners

Hi. I'm not sure it's a great idea to add banners to articles about people unless there is a very strong connection to the idea of East Anglia. Just because someone was born somewhere or played for a club in East Anglia, it doesn't mean that they need to be part of the WikiProject. Please also be careful of adding redundant banners. For example, in this edit you added a {{WikiProject North East England}} when a {{WPTyneandWear}} was already present - one is a redirect to the other. @BrownHairedGirl: An RFC is probably overdue to clarify if and when there should be any exceptions to standard categorisation guidelines for countries. @Tim!: I agree that it should be a neutral location. I think WT:CAT would be better, because this is about categorization. WT:CFD is about the CFD process, which is not an issue here.

As to existing guidelines, I am not aware of any specific categorisation guidelines for countries. There is WP:Categorization of people#By_nationality_and_occupation, but it says that it should happen, not how to do it.

So far as I can see, the only guideline applicable to this issue is WP:SUBCAT.

Before trying to map the questions raised by WP:SUBCAT, existing practices and the nature of the topics, please can you tell me whether you agree that's the full set of relevant guidelines? Or do you reckon I have missed any?

I have also been trying to see if there is any way of searching for previous RFCs which might be related, but there doesn't seem to be any log other than the v selective WP:CENT/A, and I doubt any categorisation discussion was considered significant enough to be listed on WP:CENT. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 20:42, 20 February 2018 (UTC)

@BrownHairedGirl: WT:CAT would seem preferable in this respect, also we may want to consider adding text to the section Wikipedia:Categorization#Subcategorization if consensus forms around particular ways of categorising countries. I shouldn't think there would need to more than a paragraph so unlikely necessitate a separate page. As well as the particular UK issues, we should properly consider Hong Kong / Macau in relation to China categories as sometimes I see them in "by country" categories and other times only as subcategories of China. I think you have also brought up dependent territories, it would probably be useful for there to be guidelines as to whether dependencies categories fall under 1) their sovereign states 2) in "by country" categories 3) in dedicated dependency categories such as Category:Transport by dependent territory. Portals on categories

I would like to urge you to stop adding portal links to categories using AWB. There's a discussion... somewhere... about finally deprecating portals, and your automated addition of them to category pages is not helpful. For example, Portal:Croatia (edit | [[Talk:Portal:Croatia|talk]] | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) you were adding to numerous categories had last useful edit in 2015, and I can't even find last content edit. Useful assessment script

Hey Tim, I noticed you tagging a lot of pages that popped on my watchlist so I thought I would recommend this script if you do a lot of assessments. It really makes it a lot easier to identify if an article has been tagged for a project because if the page is red, then you know that there are no tags. Cheers! trust the new year is treating you well

years in xxx - it seems some enthusiasts seem to think to add 'history' - when in reality years and xxx seem sufficient there are some countries that have it and not others - any thoughts as to whether history can be, left or pulled out  ? my understanding is consistency across all country projects is something to aspire to... I don't really see the point in adding every general project when there are more specific ones, so I am of the opinion that years would suffice and wouldn't add history as well. Wikipedia:WikiProject History even says "There are already several other history projects with more specific scopes so the majority of our work is on articles that do not seem to fall into other projects' scopes. (thanks for that) with a response like that - I may at some stage start extracting history from some south american country category trees where the addition of history seems inappropriate as the usage varies between projects - the inconsistency itself seems a problem. Rename categories?

Would you agree to renaming two categories you created i.e. Category:20th century in Northern Territory and Category:21st century in Northern Territory to Category:20th century in the Northern Territory and Category:21st century in the Northern Territory. Most of the NT categories incorporate the definite article e.g. Category:Elections in the Northern Territory and so do various ACT categories. Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

But there are some editors and admins who regularly create new categories because they are needed at the time or are listed as Wanted Categories. So, you might received more CSD C1 notices than the average editor.
