As you were very active in discussions about the India Education Program's Pune pilot, I wanted to draw your attention to Wikipedia:India_Education_Program/Analysis, a page that documents our analysis plan for the next few months. [edit]Thank you for your support at my recent successful RFA. Being now the new fellow in the fraternity of administrators, I will do my best to live up to the confidence shown in me by others, will move slowly and carefully when using the mop, will seek input from others before any action of which I might be unsure, and will try not to break anything beyond repair. See you at the next meeting. :) Best, Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 21:06, 4 December 2011 (UTC)

RfA
[edit]IMHO, there is no need for you to justify your talk page at all. There is absolutely no compulsion for editors to have a user page whatever their status is, and hence the rationale is off topic and is typical of the type of voting that should not only be disregarded by the 'crats (and in this case it will be anyway), but should be struck. I'm more inclined to believe that someone just does not want to see an immaculate RfA, but my saying so would of course be taken as BF, even if the vote is clearly inappropriate. As we all know, because there are no clear thresholds or bright lines for GF and civility, people sometimes make up the rules as it suits them according to their polarity, and occasionally don't even abide by their own criteria.-Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 11:47, 5 December 2011 (UTC)
- That's the first time anyone has ever complained about my talkpage; I was a little surprised. But I'm not really worried about it; I pretty much agree with you, and as I said there it's rather misleading to suggest that Dipankan001 has had subpar interactions with me. Some wiki-fortification for the long RfA slog
[edit]Hasteur (talk) has given you a plate of hummus! Hummus is a specialty of the Middle East. With some pita bread, they are delicious and promote WikiLove. Hopefully, this one has added flavor to your day.
Spread the goodness of hummus by adding {{subst:Hummus}} to someone's Talk page with a friendly message! Give a plate of hummus to someone you've had disagreements with in the past, or to a good friend.
Best of luck in your run for Adminship from one of your fellow NPPers. Hasteur (talk) 18:15, 5 December 2011 (UTC)

The Utahraptor has given you a cookie! Cookies promote WikiLove and hopefully this one has made your day better. You can spread the WikiLove by giving someone else a cookie, whether it be someone you have had disagreements with in the past or a good friend.
To spread the goodness of cookies, you can add {{subst:Cookie}} to someone's talk page with a friendly message, or eat this cookie on the giver's talk page with {{subst:munch}}!

Congratulations. Well done. I am actually quite annoyed that, at almost the last minute, an editor came uyp with a somewhat irrelevant oppose vote; I was hoping for 100%. But such is life. As to the messages above, almost anything is possible . I have never deleted the main page or blocked Jimbo, but I did succeed in accidentally deleting the CSD page last year! I kept it on my talk page; take a look; it's good for a laugh. Feel free to come to any of us for advice, which I suspect you will not need. Unblock requests
[edit]TBotNL, it is not really correct to revert unblock requests, even from IP editors and even if they are wholly unreasonable. - Congrats from me also. I don't vote in RFAs because when I do, the griefers assault me incessantly, (at least, they have for both of the votes I made in good faith in the past several years); but I feel you will be a great addition to the Admin corps. Just remember, you aren't doing your job properly if you aren't dragged to ANI at least once every month or two for "admin abuse". --Jayron32 03:15, 6 December 2011 (UTC)

- Congratulations - I truly mean that despite having opposed your adminship. I have no doubt whatsoever that you will be a fine admin. I voted against you because I felt a need to represent my community, and in a way that is significant to me I feel that you were not meeting the interests which are important to me. I was talking to another user about this on my talk page. I am a relieved a lot that you have taken time to try to understand my point of view and I appreciate your comments on RfA reform here. I do not expect for you to agree with me on everything - I would not expect that of anyone - but I do expect you to be conscious of why people disagree and I think that you have demonstrated that you do. I could not be happier with your behavior. Again, congratulations and please let me know if I can ever help you with anything. Blue Rasberry (talk) 21:16, 6 December 2011 (UTC)

A return gift for you!
[edit]Hi,Blade.Thank you very much for your such kind words. For the return,I must give you some scripts which may greatly help in your work.I hope you may find these useful.Paste these codes in your vector.js page.
- Status Check of a user-A tool you may need for checking whether a user is online or offline. This is based upon a logic according to which a user is considered inactive or offline if he/she does not edits in more than 15 mins.
importScript('User:Ale_jrb/Scripts/statusCheck.js'); //User:Ale_jrb/Scripts

importScript('User:Ale_jrb/Scripts/userhist.js'); //User:Ale_jrb/Scripts
- Unblock-Use this tool to unblock a user. This adds a button to your toolbox for unblocking.

The Kwartet
[edit]With all due respect I do not see why you deleted the page for The Kwartet. They clearly were notable, performing with Bubi Chen a well respected artist. They gained much of the fame with Bubi Chen until the break up of the two. I am very knowlegable in this subject as I have followed this genre of music for years now. The Kwartet is comparable to likes of the E Street Band if you want a clear example. Please restore the page. Thank you.TheMan(need i say more) (talk) 04:16, 7 December 2011 (UTC)
As I've posted on the Kwartet's talk page, I am somewhat puzzled as to why this article was deleted. It's fairly clear that the band was game-changing in Djiboutian music, as a chart-topping a cappella group in Eastern Africa is, as you would imagine, quite rare. Any help as to how to improve the page's content would be greatly appreciated, as I feel the idea of "importance" is not in question when it comes to The Kwartet.RoccoLaPauli (talk) 04:25, 7 December 2011 (UTC)

Hi Blade, just a quick note to say thanks for not deleting the above article at CSD. I've read a lot about the company on certain web-boards (I'm not affiliated with it, or the article's creator - photography is one of my interests) and I suspected there was coverage in reliable sources, and I've since found another notable reference from The Guardian. Hopefully it will be a better article soon. :-) Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 21:17, 8 December 2011 (UTC)

[edit]i believe that article should not be deleted, as I contested the CSD. The article was obviously horrible, but i think it did make a claim to notability, and a simple google search will return many articles about the kid, who is in movies, and made numerous appearances. Gaijin42 (talk) 20:13, 9 December 2011 (UTC)
- I'll restore it; I'm not convinced, but I missed your objection in the edit history (I opened it up earlier, while it was still tagged A7, and forgot to reload the page). As you said, though, it still needs a reference. No big deal. The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 20:15, 9 December 2011 (UTC)
- No problem indeed. I have significantly improved the article, take a look and see if you still think it qualifies for deletion? Gaijin42 (talk) 22:02, 9 December 2011 (UTC)
- It looks a lot better to me now; you might want to ask someone a little more familiar with WP:NFILMS (the user who comes most readily to mind is MichaelQSchmidt), but I'd say it's fine now. Thanks for your work! The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 23:14, 9 December 2011 (UTC)

IGNA
[edit]You recently CSDed a similar page. It has been recreated with a new title. I have marked it for CSD. However, I believe there may be a sock involved, as the new page creator has no other contribs, and has no talk page (which I would expect from your earlier CSD notification), but I cannot see the other information, so cannot make a link to sock report. Gaijin42 (talk) 22:23, 9 December 2011 (UTC)
- I'll look into it and see what's going on. The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 23:01, 9 December 2011 (UTC)
- Got it; the original page, IGNIA - Investing in the Base of the Pyramid, was created by User:IGNIAPartners, who I blocked for the pretty obvious username issue. What probably happened is that the user created a new account, User:Interfasemty, and recreated the article. That's not the best way to go about it (the block notice has instructions on how to request a username change), but I'm willing to write that off as a newbie mistake; I don't see anything resembling a deliberate intent to mislead. However, the COI problems remain, and I will warn them now. The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 23:07, 9 December 2011 (UTC)

[edit]He Blade, just saw the speedy of Classification of touristic sites (China) (should probably have been created at Classification of touristic sites (China) or Classification of touristic sites in China, but that's not the point). I think the subject is notable (in fact, I suggested it to the students months ago), but can imagine it was sufficiently short that you deleted under A1. Could you userfy it to the student so she can further it until it is suitable for main space? Thanks! L.tak (talk) 10:40, 10 December 2011 (UTC)

Samuel Talbot
[edit]I was expanding the article Biophysical Society, and I noticed that you had just recently deleted the article Samuel Talbot due to a PROD citing an unreferenced BLP issue. I'm curious whether the material in the deleted article is usable, since I have a source I can add if the article were undeleted. Thanks. Antony–22 (talk⁄contribs) 21:27, 10 December 2011 (UTC)
- Not a problem; I've restored the content to User:Antony-22/Samuel Talbot. Once you have a source in it and feel it's ready, you can move it back to articlespace. BLPPROD deletions are purely procedural, they don't say anything beyond the fact they're a BLP without sources, and can be restored on request. Let me know if you need anything else. The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 00:03, 11 December 2011 (UTC)

- That image is not listed for deletion - your student uploaded it correctly. The article they have created about the subject of the photo, currently at Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Keznamdi McDonald is unlikely to be moved into mainspace as the subject does not appear to be notable under Wikipedia rules. --Elen of the Roads (talk) 23:45, 11 December 2011 (UTC)
FYI, I de-prodded this. It appears the article was completely rewritten by a new editor who removed all the sourcing. I reverted to an older version for now which includes sourcing (some of which I added long ago). - I think I've found all articles that linked to it and removed the referece as well. I meant to check "what links here" before deleting, but I think I got them all, there were only four. Also, I found the article on Spanish Wikipedia and asked that it be deleted there as well. I think it was a direct lift from there. Thanks again! Chrisrus (talk) 04:00, 16 December 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for putting the status of this page to my attention. I mean you couldn't have picked a more appropriate person out of the whole lot. LOL. After a couple of hours of work, I have made huge improvements, which this Chris Rene young man thoroughly deserves (!!!!), as he is a truly remarkable talented gentleman.. I have meanwhile added some additional references that were needed there anyhow to avoid deletion. Although I prefer not to create pages for music competition candidates prior to announcement of results, this guy has done some notable work prior to applying to The X Factor. In any case, he now has my wholehearted support, as I know this particular page will be greatly visited in the next couple and days, with huge traffic... and I hope he wins out of the Final Three.... As for you, my friend, you are truly a Shining Northern Light, exactly like your name says and exactly like the beautiful Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) of Lapland, Finland Visit Finland ad campaign. Hi there; this user, whom you username blocked, has posted an unblock request. I am unsure as to why the username is offensive. Is it because of the inclusion of "chink", which has been used to indicate a person racially Chinese? Or is it "wang", which means nothing to me. --Anthony Bradbury"talk" 09:51, 21 December 2011 (UTC)
- I have now been informed as to the meaning of "wang" which, in my innocense I had never encountered. Your block is clearly correct. It is not a bad idea, in the case of username blocks and especially in the case of hardblocks, which you applied here, to include a translation/explanation for those of us of the older generation who have been bypassed by some modern idioms!--Anthony Bradbury"talk" 16:38, 21 December 2011 (UTC)
Alex Holmes
[edit]Thanks for the update on the speedy deletion request for Alex Holmes, Blade. I didn't feel comfortable yet with the whole AfD thing (too much effort, maybe? LOL); so I just put {{notability}} and {{one source}} tags on it (and did a little bit of cleanup, too). It wasn't apparently a new article (circa 2008, I think); I found it clicking on the random article link (I was bored! LOL). I'm of the opinion that if he qualifies for a Wikipedia entry, then I certainly should since anyone can come across several sources of me on the 'net ... not that I want any more exposure! Merry Christmas. Don'tKnowItAtAll (talk) 19:24, 21 December 2011 (UTC)
Deletion
[edit]Hey this page was deleted before I was even done trying to finish it. Additionally, the only saved text was online, and it took me a good 2 hours to get it all up there. RfA keywords
[edit]Hi!
Given 100 postings on the ArbCom case about MF and the c-word, it is reasonable to make that discussion available to search engines.
Others have already complained about the premature use of a hidden-archive template to stifle discussion. Regardless of the merits of the template's original use, the template does hide information (of considerable interest to the community) from the search engines.
Of course, it would be proper to dis-embolden the keywords, or perhaps rephrase them, but I believe all should be listed, to help the discussion be found.
Finally, please provide descriptive edit summaries, particularly when you do contentious edits. "Remove (one offensive) keywords added by KW" would have been descriptive and neutral, for example.
Sincerely, Kiefer.Wolfowitz 21:37, 23 December 2011 (UTC)
- Whatever; it has nothing to do with me personally being offended (I'm rather immune to swearing myself), but rather trying to move ahead with the discussion. And once the thread gets archived, it'll be plenty easy to find. But I'm not in a mood to fight over it (Christmas is already hard enough for me as a strong agnostic), so you may do whatever you see fit. My actions are always reversible. tempworks article
[edit]as a not frequent but respectful and informative contributor to topics regarding the staffing industry on wikipedia, i can not fathom why you found it helpful to delete my entry on 'tempworks', a company (my company) that has nurtured this industry for many years as my father did before me. the reason stated on your deletion post, advertising, is not correct as my post was certainly no more self-promotional than many such posts that exist on wikipedia.

- I doubt this is the real "Gregg Dourgarian." Very few corporate executives show so little self-control in a public forum, not to mention the borderline illiteracy. Also, "Gregg Dourgarian"'s wikipedia contributions are quite amateur -- almost childish -- compared to the contributions we are used to seeing from a CEO who (one assumes) wants to put his best foot forward. My guess is it's actually someone masquerading as Gregg Dourgarian in order to embarrass him, or possibly some potty-mouth teenager who pulled Gregg Dourgarian's name off the web and thought this would be a funny joke. It seems kind of mean to block an editor for a username issue right after they've made corrections to their own BLP, been reverted with very little explanation, and then asked for help at the help desk. Please consider unblocking and helping him. If you've no time, I'll try to explain to him what's going on when I have time tonight. But if you don't unblock, at the very least you should explain why his username is unacceptable; the template you left does not explain what the issue is. I imagine it all seems rather Kafkaesque from his point of view. --Floquenbeam (talk) 17:03, 3 January 2012 (UTC)

I don't mind direct talk, it gets the same message across. Hopefully he doesn't end up too discouraged; I've helped a couple of users who I blocked for username issues before, and some of them aren't too put off by the experience, so we'll see what happens. Lists / BLP
[edit]You have recent de-BLP-prodded a number of unreferenced lists about living people asserting they are not biographies of living people and as such not subject to BLP criteria. Would you consider List of men & women Newt Gingrich cheated on his wife with a BLP? Toddst1 (talk) 15:30, 12 January 2012 (UTC)
- I'd consider it a G10 candidate, as the title alone is a pretty obvious attack. I too would like BLPPROD to be largely expanded, but we seem to be in a minority on that issue. The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 15:43, 12 January 2012 (UTC)
- Ok, maybe that's an extreme example. From Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Stand-alone lists
Stand-alone lists are Wikipedia articles; so are subject to Wikipedia's content policies, such as verifiability, no original research, neutral point of view, and what Wikipedia is not, as well as notability guidelines.
- So as a stand alone article, how is List of awards and nominations received by Martin Sheen not an unreferenced article (a biography) about a living person? I've started a discussion along these lines at Wikipedia_talk:Manual_of_Style/Stand-alone_lists. Perhaps we should continue this there. Toddst1 (talk) 16:12, 12 January 2012 (UTC)
- I'll look it over later today; I pretty much agree with your points above. The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 16:32, 12 January 2012 (UTC)
- Would you mind reverting these three edits? [1], [2], [3]. Toddst1 (talk) 15:31, 13 January 2012 (UTC)

[edit]I have provided a bulleted detailed response to Asad's accusations. I have also scanned and emailed the utilized sources to HJMitchell. [edit]Hey there ! I saw you on the SOPA article, I work on the ISS most of the time, there is a Japanese module on the international space station, and I sometimes label diagrams in Japanese. My Japanese is no good at all !!! I would love to occasionally post things on your talkpage for your opinion, if that is cool with you. I do things like this so far, but it's the more complex captioning I am getting into that would be cool to get a little help with now and then. Penyulap talk 04:00, 20 January 2012 (UTC)

The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 04:08, 20 January 2012 (UTC) I usually go by informal Japanese, though either works for me; though I can do it, keigo is so much more work than it's worth.

Block evasion?
[edit]Hi, you blocked User:BrownyCat a few days ago. Similar problematic edits are now coming from Special:Contributions/118.102.167.83, and the edit summaries of that IP are similar to those of BrownyCat (including the peculiar accusations that people might be "terrorists"). Is there anything that can be done about this? - Sitush (talk) 10:44, 20 January 2012 (UTC)
- I'll take a closer look when I can get in front of my computer (I'm on an iPhone now, should be a couple hours), but a cursory glance at it is definitely raising my suspicions. The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 11:13, 20 January 2012 (UTC)
- I've looked, and they're similar enough that I'm blocking for a week; the disruptive editing from that IP alone is enough, but combined with looking almost identical to BrownyCat it's more than enough. The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい)
- OK. Thanks for looking into it. We'll see what happens in a week ... or perhaps sooner, if they have a bit of savvy re: IP hopping! - Sitush (talk) 19:09, 20 January 2012 (UTC)
- I know you guys who are fighting the good fight at WP:INDIA need admins willing to use their tools, so consider me one of them. I'm always more than happy to help. The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 19:10, 20 January 2012 (UTC)
- Good to know, thanks. I'd rather not have the fights in the first instance, though! I took a bit of a break this last week, in a vain attempt to get some peace and quiet. - Sitush (talk) 19:14, 20 January 2012 (UTC)
- If you really want quiet, try editing some Burmese articles; outside of Aung San and his daughter, and leaders of the junta and government, I never see anyone touch those articles. When I need a moment like that, I edit Zoya Phan; no one besides me has made a significant edit to it since 2009. The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 19:17, 20 January 2012 (UTC)
- Politics? Juntas? Meh ... the stuff of nightmares. Nice article, though. Are we still allowed to call it "Burma"? More seriously, if there is stuff in English then I might take a dive, although I will be completely honest and say that my current knowledge extends only as far as Burmese Days, George Orwell being one of my literary heroes. - Sitush (talk) 02:37, 21 January 2012 (UTC)
- Well, the article is still at Burma, and that's the politically neutral name (without giving a linguistics lesson, Burma is taken from a general term for the area while Myanmar is a contrived name to exlplicitly discriminate against non-ethnic Burmese; not terribly different from the Russians renaming Belarus Byelorussia). If you want a good starting point, check out the 2010 version of Freedom from Fear; it's primarily dedicated to Aung San Suu Kyi, but there's also an extensive study comparing colonial India to colonial Burma. The other name, which will also be very helpful for India pursuits, is Michael Aris; he was Suu's husband, and wrote a lot about Burma in between writing the book on modern-day Bhutan and northern India (mostly Ladakh) while teaching at Oxford. It should be easier for you to get his work; here in the US, it was decidedly an adventure. I'm also trying (and miserably failing so far) to find something abou Zoya's father and sister as well. If it were possible, for grad school I'd probably study the history of the Karen people, but it's far too unsafe there and there's no good way to learn Karen in the US, so instead I intend to study Ainu history instead (who are in the rather unique position of being repressed but no one caring at all; they're even harder to find English sources for). But I'm perfectly content to write about Burma here instead. Hope I didn't bore you too much. Good reading, by the way; my favorite fiction writer is HP Lovecraft (he's from New England, my region of the US), but I always liked Orwell. Involved in I/P?
[edit]Hello, I have noticed that you commented in WP:AE on severalWP:ARBPIA cases in uninvolved section .I noticed that some of you edits in the past [8] may indicate that you does involved. Moreover this comment is troublesome too [9] as what happened during Palestinian exodus is not compared to what happened in Rwanda or Darfur also its highly debated among the historians contrary to other cases. It would be best in my opinion that you will not comment on those cases even if you think you truly not involved.--Shrike (talk) 13:57, 20 January 2012 (UTC)
- The first diff is from 2010. It has nothing to do with I/P involvement, it was standard NPP cleanup, and the editor who created that page was blocked as a sock of a banned user. As to the second, it was a username block of a username reported to UAA; it was purely procedural, as the username was clearly problematic (and was an obvious sock of User:Nbaka is a joke), it has nothing to do with my personal opinion on I/P topics. I don't consider myself involved; if you really want to pursue it, you can start an AN thread, but I doubt you'll get the result you're looking for. The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 14:20, 20 January 2012 (UTC)
- It doesn't really matter you statements in edit summary that you clean some POV make you involved.--Shrike (talk) 14:34, 20 January 2012 (UTC)
- One edit from a year and a half ago doesn't constitute involvement, in my mind. If you disagree, take it here. The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 14:38, 20 January 2012 (UTC)

Update: new user warning test results available
[edit]Hi WP:UWTEST member, we wanted to share a quick update on the status of the project. Here's the skinny:
- We're happy to say we have a new round of testing results available! Since there are tests on several Wikipedias, we're collecting all results at the project page on Meta. We've also now got some help from Wikimedia Foundation data analyst Ryan Faulkner, and should have more test results in the coming weeks.
- Last but not least, check out the four tests currently running at the documentation page.

As the operator of MMABot (talk · contribs) I've noticed that you have frequently come behind it and changed {{BLP unsourced}} templates to {{BLP sources}} (Specifically in these cases: [10][11][12][13][14]). I believe I understand why you have made those changes. MMABot is flagging those articles as unsourced using the reasoning of item 10 here (basically there are no <ref> tags in the article). I wanted to get your input as to whether you believe MMABot is doing the correct thing or if MMABot should be adding a different template to those articles (perhaps {{No footnotes}} or {{inline citations}}). Thanks for your input (assuming you provide one ;). --TreyGeek (talk) 04:42, 21 January 2012 (UTC)
- The consensus, as I know it, is that an article has to be completely unreferenced; links to their fight records would count as a reference. The best place to discuss it is WT:BLPPROD if you want to change that; truthfully, I'd like it to be changed, but the people who watch over that page tend to be somewhat inclusionist; perhaps some fresh blood there would be able to force some expansion. The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 04:49, 21 January 2012 (UTC)
- Just to clarify, MMABot is approved by the WP:BAG to add the {{BLP unsourced}} template on an article lacking <ref> tags. It sounds as if you would agree with that if it weren't for WT:BLPPROD. Am I correct in my understanding?
- If so, then it sounds like I need clarification from WT:BLPPROD on this issue. In my current state (take that however you want), I'm somewhat confused since WT:BLPPROD refers to the deletion of unsourced BLP articles and my Bot is simply flagging BLP articles as unsourced and is not requesting deletion of the article (I realize there is a very fine line there).
- To be perfectly honest, at the moment, I'm more concerned about ensuring that my Bot is applying the correct template than starting a potentially controversial discussion (though I may be willing to do that at a later point). You have been the only person I have seen coming behind my Bot altering this template and that is why I've asked you about it. If you are okay with how my Bot has been behaving then that's fine. If you think there would be a better response from the Bot, I'd love to hear about it. If you want to punt to WT:BLPPROD that's fine too. --TreyGeek (talk) 05:23, 21 January 2012 (UTC)
- I'm fine with what your bot has been doing; it's picked up several ones that are completely unreferenced. It takes all of 10 seconds or so to change a tag, so it's not a big deal; any false positives are more than worth the correct tags. The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 05:53, 21 January 2012 (UTC)
- Fair enough. I just wanted to be sure there wasn't a better action. Thanks for your help. --TreyGeek (talk) 15:59, 21 January 2012 (UTC)

[edit]Hello, Blade. Nice to meet you after a long time again. Can you please add my username (Dipankan001) to here? This is because that I want to use Kissle to help me in New Page Patrolling. Thanking you, Dipankan001. Dipankan In the woods? 11:38, 26 January 2012 (UTC)
- For a suggestion, I think Kissle is very powerful and good tool to patrol new pages. From General look to simplicity, and for putting maintenance tags on to a article- It's very easy. You can also, nominate for PROD or AFD's. It's a perfect match if you are not patrolling along with deletion. There's a huge collection of maintenance tags. Also, it shows the edit count, user groups and user names of users who have created the article. I would recommend Kissle for you; by the overall judgement. I don't think Kissle would fit an admin if he's on the way for making deletions while patrolling- It's for NPP, but has no deletion links for admins. Thanks for putting my name in the list. Sincerely, Dipankan001. Dipankan In the woods? 15:59, 26 January 2012 (UTC)

[edit]Any suggestions regarding how best to handle a slow burn edit war at Rajus. I did warn the IP - User_talk:2.124.113.148 - a few days ago but they're just made the same edit yet again, and it is completely unsourced caste bleugh. - Sitush (talk) 20:43, 7 February 2012 (UTC)
- I'll look it over in more detail when I get he, but I'd be inclined to semi it for a while. I don't think much good will come from anon/new accounts editing there. The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 20:46, 7 February 2012 (UTC)
- I've looked at it, and the IP has been edit warring for long enough that I've blocked it for 24 hours. If more start popping up, or this one resumes it upon returning from his block, let me know and I'll semi it for a week. The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 04:11, 8 February 2012 (UTC)

Kushwaha block
[edit]Thanks for the use of clue. I'll wait for the socks to come out of the drawer now! - Sitush (talk) 16:28, 9 February 2012 (UTC)
- They won't exactly be hard to find, but It'll still be annoying. I'm deliberately heavy-handed in this area because I don't want the actually productive editors driven away; hopefully it helps. Let me know when the quacking starts. The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 16:35, 9 February 2012 (UTC)
- OK, will do. I for one have no intention of being driven away but it does become a bit dis-spiriting at times &, yes, there were one or two occasion last year when I came very close to throwing the towel in. - Sitush (talk) 17:00, 9 February 2012 (UTC)
- This is something of a technical question and the answer may well be lost in the depths of time, in which case "no worries". As I understand things, block enforcement messages that are current should remain on a user's talk page. Purely on the basis of that, this edit is wrong. I am not going to do anything about it because it just stirs up unnecessary aggravation ... but the technical issue is why the heck does it matter? I mean, we have a block log and it is clear from that whether someone is or is not blocked; and we have a talk page history that can retrieve the full notice, complete with any commentary given by the blocking admin and/or subsequent contributors. I understand that there is a need to retain the notice in the event that the user wants to appeal but if they choose to remove the notice then all that means is that their appeal will not be flagged. Otherwise the concept appears to be redundant. Am I missing something? - Sitush (talk) 00:42, 10 February 2012 (UTC)
- Different admins have different views on this; my feeling is that it's not worth fighting over until/unless he starts making unblock requests; that way, the reviewing admin will be able to see without hunting around for a rationale. The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 01:49, 10 February 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks. That rather matches my take on things. Perhaps the guideline needs to be clarified but, hey, I have enough crap to deal with already! - Sitush (talk) 01:52, 10 February 2012 (UTC)

An editor removed your tag
[edit]I put a warning on editor User:Kennvido's talk page about adding OR into an article that I contribute. I then looked at his history and found he created an article Patti Sacks which to me it definitely should be deleted. Then I noticed you had already tagged it this way, but the editor removed it. I thought I should tell you about this before I did anything myself. BashBrannigan (talk) 22:54, 11 February 2012 (UTC)
Rajus - IP block
[edit]You blocked User:2.124.113.148 a few days ago for edit warring at Rajus. They have returned with exactly the same stuff. I admit that they are now - at the "last minute" of 3RR - talking about it but their basis is an unattributed and seemingly primary source. I have amended their edit at Talk:Rajus because of the swamping nature of the source. What do we do? WP:AN has just seen an enaction of sanctions but I am loathe to come down too hard, so soon. - Sitush (talk) 01:37, 12 February 2012 (UTC)
- Yeah, I don't want to swing the banhammer just yet either. Sometime tomorrow morning, when I'm thinking a bit straighter, I'll leave them a personalized message telling them to tone it down and stop bombarding the article and talkpage with stream of consciousness commentary; not sure what effect, if any, it will have, but it's worth a try. The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 05:41, 12 February 2012 (UTC)
- They are continuing to talk, which is good news. The fact that their comments make little sense and appear likely to be in contradiction to our content policies doesn't matter all that much provided that they do not become frustrated and resort to warring once more. So, no worries for now. - Sitush (talk) 10:12, 12 February 2012 (UTC)
- Cancel the above. They are back warring over unsourced content, including items that featured prior to their block of a few days ago. Is semi-protection worth considering? For a week, say, but with a review if they do in fact come up with acceptable sources before that time is up? - Sitush (talk) 11:01, 12 February 2012 (UTC)
- I'll semi it for a week and see if that can stave off blocking for the time being; we'll see what happens. I'll keep an eye on the article and talkpage as well. The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 13:37, 12 February 2012 (UTC)

Kushwaha block evasion
[edit]I am pretty sure that HistoryofKushwaha is now evading the block as an IP. The writing style and the questions being posed, including a request of contact details similar to a prior request to sort things out by email, makes this likely. I don't think that SPI can do anything because they will not link IPs to usernames. - Sitush (talk) 09:17, 12 February 2012 (UTC)

AE notifications
[edit]Hi Blade. Could you tell me: at what stage is it generally permissible to notify users of discretionary sanctions? Nightw 04:46, 13 February 2012 (UTC)
- The general guideline is to notify someone who's new to the area if/when they run afoul of whatever sanctions are in place. With IPs, you can play looser with it, especially in areas that have had problems with anonymous editors; that can sometimes head things off at the pass. But with users who aren't brand new, typically people wait until they start making a mess of things first; ideally, it's supposed to used as a preventative measure so whoever it is can correct their editing patterns. The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 05:54, 13 February 2012 (UTC)
- Okay, thanks that makes sense. The reason I ask is that I was dealing with a new user who's editing exclusively within 1RR areas. S/he didn't know about the restrictions I guess and reverted twice within a few hours on the same article. Given that the user was brand new and wasn't really aware of the restrictions, I pointed them out and left it there. But for the future, were you not an admin, would you ask for such a user to be formally notified on the first strike—as you say it's meant to be preventative—or wait until it becomes more serious? Or would it depend on other things (general behaviour, attitude, etc)?
- Sorry for all the questions! Nightw 17:07, 13 February 2012 (UTC)
- Not a problem; better you learn now before botching something and getting thrown to the wolves at ANI. It does somewhat depend on what their behavior has been; someone who's genuinely trying to help and accidentally reverted twice in 23:58 hours should generally be given a little more leeway than a brand new, tendentious SPA. But you do want to let people know fairly quickly, so that new good-faith editors know what to do and tendentious editors have the warning on their record (makes it much easier for admins to sanction them). So generally, you want to warn people for strike 1, but make sure it's actually preventative. I've seen you around here and there, and based on what I've seen I think your discretion will suffice. The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 00:09, 14 February 2012 (UTC)

HistoryofKushwaha evading again?
[edit]See this. This is the third IP that it seems HistoryofKushwaha has used since their user account was blocked. The others were User:116.202.167.212 and User:116.203.72.55, both of which were also blocked. - Sitush (talk) 17:29, 13 February 2012 (UTC)
- Whacked. If this keeps up, I'll see if I can find someone who knows how to do rangeblocks and see if they can do anything about it. The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 17:42, 13 February 2012 (UTC)
- The problem is that those three IPs are part of two different ranges, so there would need to be multiple rangeblocks and possibly quite a large amount of collateral damage. IP #1 is on 116.202.164.0/22 and IPs #2 and #3 are on 116.203.64.0/22. Reaper Eternal (talk) 17:53, 13 February 2012 (UTC)
- We'll just have to grind them down and keep protection on the article. To my mind, it is definitely the same person. - Sitush (talk) 17:55, 13 February 2012 (UTC)
- If it gets really bad, we can semi-protect the talkpage as well; it rarely gets that far, but I've seen it happen before (Talk:Jim Bell was one such example). Why do these blind POV pushers always have to be on dynamic, shifting IP ranges that constantly change? The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 18:01, 13 February 2012 (UTC)
- Because all the ones on static IPs get IP-blocked for months at a time until they go away. =) Reaper Eternal (talk) 18:04, 13 February 2012 (UTC)
- True, I suppose. Oh well, as a kid I used to enjoy playing whack-a-mole at arcades when they still existed around here, so I'll try to think of it in those terms. The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 18:07, 13 February 2012 (UTC)

Barnstar
[edit]The Admin's Barnstar | ||
I just wanted to register my esteem for the work you're doing at AE. It's not an easy or pleasant area to work in, especially for a relatively new admin, but maintaining (and sometimes enforcing) decorum in some of the most toxic areas of the encyclopaedia is valuable work. I hope you'll continue to contribute there, because I'm a great believer that the more admins who comment on a request, the fairer and more transparent it appears to be, and thus the more legitimate it is. This might be the only thanks you get, but I thought you deserved some sort of acknowledgement. Best, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:19, 13 February 2012 (UTC) |
- Thanks! I've read in many places that AE needed some more help, so I figured I'd try it. One can't get more toxic than some of the places I've dealt with the WMF in, so this hasn't been too horrible in comparison. Thanks again, see you around!! The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 21:32, 13 February 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the message
[edit]It's appreciated. I do think the editor has a point and I think mine is even worse from their POV than yours. When I first came here I decided to put very little on the page as I didn't want to make public too much about me - especially as given that my most recent job was in defence and I couldn't write much about that and I didn't really want to say too much on what I was doing then as that would have required mentioning my academic qualifications and I think these have little, if any, bearing at wikipedia (well apart from the fact that, being an academic, I often have easy access to academic sources). As, at that time, I didn't have much to write about what I did at wikipedia it remained largely blank. It's probably remained that way too long! I don't think I'll ever have a verbose user page but I do intend to put a bit up about what I do here. Of course I'm now in the slightly awkward position of not wanting to prejudge the RfA going either way but at the same time don't want to write a user page that will need to be changed shortly. Oh well there is some stuff I can add to it in the meantime. Dpmuk (talk) 06:11, 15 February 2012 (UTC)

MSU Interview
[edit]Dear The Blade of the Northern Lights,
My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.
So a few things about the interviews:
- Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
- Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
- All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
- All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
- The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.
Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name HERE instead.
If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.
Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.
Sincerely,
Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) 07:26, 12 February 2012 (UTC)

Problematic contributor - Austereraj
[edit]You are going to have to bear with me on this one. Austereraj is a lawyer who operates Smt. Shanti Devi Law College and a legal clinic therein. His name is Dr Raj Kumar Yadav, per his user page. I have been reverting virtually every contribution that he has made for months now because it is in almost every instance self-promotional or designed to benefit his relatives. Aside from his poor edits to the college article, he has also created multiple autobiographical articles, all of which have been deleted except (perhaps) the one that he did today - Dr. Raj Kumar Yadav (Dhamana) - which is now at CSD A7.
On top of those issues, he also has a habit of adding linkspam such as this, and of creating container articles for his business, the most recent examples of which is Saharanwas (I have deleted the bilge from it). He also promotes his college in lists, eg: here.
He has recently turned his user page into a CV here and has in the past done the same with his talk page.
Worse, he has frequently engaged in socking and anon IPs at the college article, and has used the user pages of the socks for promotion. There is a SPI at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet_investigations/Austereraj/Archive but he has actually been doing this crap since around October of last year with, eg, User:Ssdlcrewari (blocked after a report to UAA).
How much more of this crap do we have to take? Each time someone looks at it, it is a different admin from last time and the dots are not getting joined up. He never communicates but has in the past blanked his talk page. - Sitush (talk) 07:38, 18 February 2012 (UTC)
- I'm blocking this user indefinitely now. To head things off, I'll indefinitely semi-protect Smt. Shanti Devi Law College and Saharanwas and see if, at the very least, that makes it a bit harder for him. I'll also salt Dr. Raj Kumar Yadav (Dhamana) (really, even if there was a legitimate article to be written about him, it certainly wouldn't stay there). I have no good faith for people who try to spam about themselves like that. The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 15:13, 18 February 2012 (UTC)
- Thank you, thank you, thank you. So much. Perhaps this one can at last be put to bed. I did in fact manage to expand his Saharanwas village article from an unsourced two sentence job (after removal of his promotion etc) into something that by the standards of Indian village content here is actually not bad. And, yes, I did link to his law college article, since it is in that village. Doubtless he will try socking etc but the semi-pp should do the trick because - PhD or no PhD - he doesn't appear to be that clever when it comes to Wikipedia. - Sitush (talk) 15:37, 18 February 2012 (UTC)
- Yeah, I've seen a lot worse in Indian village articles (I just indefinitely semi'd Malhoo in Pakistan, that would have been amusing if I didn't have to clean it out). Anyways, glad to help. I just remembered I had to replace his userpage with a
