Unban
[edit]- I've just found out that "Discretionary sanctions imposed under these provisions may be appealed to the imposing administrator". I thought I'd give you the chance to unban me before I start filling in the paperwork.Momento (talk) 06:58, 17 November 2012 (UTC)
- I think it has to be done here Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Clarification_and_Amendment. I succesfully appealed my topic ban there for a different subject, but only after waiting several years. (And now I lost interest in the subject.) Andries (talk) 11:32, 17 November 2012 (UTC)
- Greetings Andries. BoNL can unban if he wants to.Momento (talk) 12:15, 17 November 2012 (UTC)
- Yes, BoNL can indeed entertain removal of the discretionary sanctions - after a minimum of 6 months have passed since they were implemented. Arbs typically won't entertain such as well until either the same time has passed, or there's an obvious error in implementing them. Based on the topic, however, that's a rarity (✉→BWilkins←✎) 12:21, 17 November 2012 (UTC)
- I can't see any six month minimum.Momento (talk) 19:23, 17 November 2012 (UTC)

- I have just recently found out that my section on the Aurora Youth Soccer Club was ban, and I wanted to inform you that I am writing this page for a course in university where I am trying to promote this organization because they are a large part to [Aurora, Ontario]. It was informing readers about this soccer program and how they can develop their soccer skills, along with their personal developments. Just was thinking maybe it can stay on for a few weeks to see the feedback from others readers. If it does not receive proper feedback by December 5th it can be deleted? Thank you and please take my thoughts into consideration as it is for a project. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nbess996 (talk • contribs) 20:30, 21 November 2012 (UTC)
Mentioned at WT:Arbitration/Requests
[edit]Your name is mentioned in a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Arbitration/Requests#Prem Rawat. The names of the four newly-sanctioned editors can be seen at the bottom of Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Prem Rawat 2#Log of blocks, bans, and restrictions. In my opinion, the four editors should consider filing arbitration enforcement appeals at WP:AE. There is some amount of confusion there, and I sense that some of the participants are not eager to hear what is being said. Anyway, the reason for a discussion at WT:A/R is that it is linked as the talk page of WP:AE. Who knew? Anyway you can respond in the mentioned thread if you want. Thanks, EdJohnston (talk) 18:00, 17 November 2012 (UTC)

- It's a 17th century account of his reign called The Shah Jahan Nama of 'Inayat Khan: An Abridged History of the Mughal Emporer Shah Jahan. Not an easy book to get ahold of, and it took some pulling strings though the library of my alma mater to get it on an interlibrary loan, but I finally got it just in time for our annual propaganda holiday. I'm hoping I can be of some use content-wise on it at some point, though my immediate priority is to use another enormous book I just finished to do some much-needed work on Soong May-ling. - The shirt is a trinket but might also be a useful PR exercise. The act of saying that "yes, I agree with that nomination" counts for far more. I am not entirely sober (aka: pissed), having just come home from a session to celebrate my 50th and having not slept for what is now ... erm, I forget, but it must be 48 hours. I am also not always correct in my rationales etc. I trust you to see the background and not just say "it's Sitush, so that's fine" - which is a common accusation levelled at the few admins who take a prolonged interest in the Indic goings-on. [edit]Hello, I noticed that Rainer P. is discussing the Rawat article with Little Olive Oil on her talk page. Bringers of Darkness (was redirect to WP:GARAGE#Example)
[edit]I don't wish to nitpick, but this isn't technically actually a valid WP:CSD#R2, as the rules state "Redirects ... to any other namespace except the Category:, Template:, Wikipedia:, Help: and Portal: namespaces." Then again, since I was only going to ever use it as a snarky response to a non-notable band arguing forcefully in an AfD against their article, it's probably best it stays deleted. --Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 13:16, 4 December 2012 (UTC)

[edit]Per numerous warnings etc at User_talk:Theoppulent, do you think that we have reached the end of the line? They've had the caste sanctions warning. - Sitush (talk) 14:21, 7 December 2012 (UTC)
- Actually, I'll have a think about taking it to SPI. I was already fairly sure that they'd been operating as an IP but it has just struck me that the recent edits here are in similar vein, ie: attempting to hijack an article with unsupported claims etc relating to the Chaurasia community. - Sitush (talk) 14:33, 7 December 2012 (UTC)
Legal articles sock
[edit]D'ya remember Austereraj and their socks? They were quite persistent up until around 10 months ago when you blocked and semi'd articles such as Smt. Shanti Devi Law College. I'm sure that they are back as Rajkumartundak. In fact, "Rajkumar" was one of their signature roots and Tundak one of their several useless articles. This quacks so loud that it probably isn't worth wasting the time of the good folk at SPI but Wikipedia:Sockpuppet_investigations/Austereraj/Archive has some past info. - Sitush (talk) 08:42, 9 December 2012 (UTC)

- I see that they also recreated J S Yadav about a fortnight after it was CSD'd for copyvio. The new version is not a copyvio but it is also useless and (almost certainly) yet another member of their family. Problem is, "Yadav" is an extremely common name in India, so proving non-notability is going to be a nightmare even though the contributor history demonstrates the problem, This subtle aggrandisement is a trademark, alas.
It's a weird world is this Wikipedia lark, and judging by events today at ANI, well, it is about to get weirder. The regular sharks etc have latched on to me, having sensed blood, and it looks like the well-meaning folk have been taken in. Thus, my first visit ArbCom as a "someone reported" seems likely. My choice of words was poor but I've already said that and all I was asking for was someone to intervene and persuade D to stop and talk, rather than carry on and talk. Which they did promptly, having being hit with the ANI hammer. Signed, a bewildered member of the Mancunian India Caste Cabal, otherwise known as - Sitush (talk) 00:34, 10 December 2012 (UTC)

Threw up a link to this section on the talk page. Hope it helps. As for ANI, don't sweat it. Things work out in the end. Of course, knowing obscure policy and giving out lofty advice is what got me blocked in the first place, so maybe I should shut up. — Francophonie&Androphilie(Je vous invite à me parler) 01:26, 10 December 2012 (UTC)
- Well, it's gone. Thanks for the advice. I'm not too mithered about ANI but what is really happening there has nothing to do with me, although there are two or three people taking a pop for reasons unconnected with either my complaint or Doncram's editing: they turn up to take a pop at me every time, seemingly because they are frustrated. Their frustrations stem from misunderstandings of policy and one has just demonstrated that again by proposing that I should receive a short block as a "rap on the knuckles" - not what we block for, as you will already know! I got what I asked for in my opening remark there, ie: delay some dodgy contributions from continuing without first discussing the underlying issues and methodology further and in one place. - Sitush (talk) 07:57, 10 December 2012 (UTC)

List of Indian IT companies editnotice
[edit]Hi Blade. You mentioned to me a while ago that you wouldn't mind putting up an editnotice for me at List of Indian IT companies. Well, I'm still in the process of a major overhaul (see my ultimatum of sweeping unilateral revision), but I think it'd be useful to put up the editnotice now, so that I don't find myself in the ugly position of edit-warring with users who are trying to put up the same type of cruft that landed the page with a {{Cleanup-rewrite}} ambox. Anyways, so I drew up a proposal editnotice, and was wondering what you think; obviously, feel free to revise the draft in whatever way you'd like. If you have any questions about the rationale behind my various decrees, I'd be happy to explain - my basic thought is that the current purpose of the page, to list all IT companies operating in India, fails WP:NOTYELLOW, whereas a list of companies based in India could be a useful guide to interested readers. (As I say on the talk page, I'm aware that I'm effectively taking control of the page, but I see no harm in doing that in the absence of any arguments to the contrary - if other editors do come to the page and say they disagree with my decisions, then obviously I have no interest in violating WP:OWN.) — Francophonie&Androphilie(Je vous invite à me parler) 22:05, 10 December 2012 (UTC)
- The text looks fine; I'm going to boldly bold a few things to make it more attention-getting. Also, you may want to make it a bright background color (see the editnotice for Gadsby (novel), for instance), but I'll leave that to you. The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 05:46, 11 December 2012 (UTC)
- A bright background color? I scoff at the idea! Sure. Will do. What's your opinion on icon choice? I contemplated using File:Ambox warning blue.svg instead. — Francophonie&Androphilie(Je vous invite à me parler) 06:10, 11 December 2012 (UTC)
- Either one would be fine, I've seen both used. Though I must confess, I've seriously considered uploading this. The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 06:35, 11 December 2012 (UTC)
- Just ripped off the Gadsby color completely for now. Or do you think it should be something a bit softer? I think the important thing is to scare away the advertisers and explain things to those who legitimately misunderstand the purpose of the encyclopedia, wihtout biting the newbies any more than is necessary. — Francophonie&Androphilie(Je vous invite à me parler) 06:57, 11 December 2012 (UTC)

- Thank you. The real gruntwork is going through and deleting every non-Indian company, and figuring out where all the Indian companies are actually headquartered - I think a lot of them try to avoid saying they're based in India as much as possible, so it's been taking me a surprising amount of digging on some companies' websites to find a passing reference to a "registered office" or something. But I hope this should at least stem the flow of incoming cruft while we sort out the cruft that's already there. — Francophonie&Androphilie(Je vous invite à me parler) 15:07, 11 December 2012 (UTC)

- Unfortunately for deletionists everywhere, myself included, I had to stumble on this conversation and check the article. And, policy stickler as I am, I was forced to de-BLP-PROD it on the grounds that it was created before March 2010. Should we get rid of that loophole? Definitely. Do I hate myself a little for not just keeping my mouth shut? Yup. But, it is what it is. I don't feel like putting together an AfD nomination at the moment, but if someone else does, they'll definitely have my !vote. — Francophonie&Androphilie(Je vous invite à me parler) 18:53, 14 December 2012 (UTC)
- You did quite right, well spotted, I should have noticed that. The cut-off date was part of the deal when the BLP-prod system was set up, as a compromise between those who wanted a mass-deletion of all unsourced BLPs and those who thought the problem didn't need so drastic a remedy. It's a pretty horrible article, more of a CV, but with all the things she is said to have done the sources might be there for notability, and I don't have time or inclination either to do the research. JohnCD (talk) 20:25, 14 December 2012 (UTC)
- As I recall, things that were restored after the cutoff date are still eligible for BLPPROD; I could be wrong, but that's how I've always done things. The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 21:17, 14 December 2012 (UTC)

- As I recall, things that were restored after the cutoff date are still eligible for BLPPROD; I could be wrong, but that's how I've always done things. The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 21:17, 14 December 2012 (UTC)
Savji
[edit]Savji appears to have been subject to problematic IP contributions over a prolonged period and today appears to be attracting some rapid-fire meatpuppets. I've had no response to my talk page comments, although I've just added another. - Sitush (talk) 10:02, 13 December 2012 (UTC)
- Ouch. Indefinitely semiprotected, as like almost all the others like it IPs haven't done anything useful there. The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 17:57, 13 December 2012 (UTC)
Newtown Shooting
[edit]Howdy. I found a decent reference for that addition to the article. Best, --Jsderwin (talk) 18:38, 14 December 2012 (UTC)
- Good, thanks. The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 18:40, 14 December 2012 (UTC)
Image license
[edit]Hi :) Noticed that you deleted Image:Stag Arms Model 2TL.gif because it was licensed as having permission to use on Wikipedia (but not a free-er license). Do you think it also qualifies as Fair Use under Promotional Material? If no, why not (so I can better understand for future cases).
Thanks,
-SColombo (talk) 22:13, 14 December 2012 (UTC)
Thanks
[edit]For semi-protecting the Newtown article. I was about to do it myself! SarahStierch (talk) 22:14, 14 December 2012 (UTC)

AE case
[edit]Hello The Blade of the Northern Lights. I am writing regarding your commentary on this AE case [1]. As I mentioned, this is a rather unprecedented case. No one in the history of WP has ever been banned because of such accusations. I have clean history of participation in WP. Please could you reconsider your position. Rainer P.
[edit]Rainer P. has opened a request: Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Clarification_and_Amendment#Amendment_request:_Wikipedia:Requests_for_arbitration.2FPrem_Rawat_2. Could you identify for me the concerns you had regarding Rainer P. - the edits that user made which led to the topic ban. Thanks. SilkTork ✔Tea time 05:31, 16 December 2012 (UTC)
Archives
[edit]Hello Blade. I hope you like the attractive new archive box I added for you near the top of this page. I was trying to look up some Prem Rawat discussions. Revert if you disagree. Thanks, EdJohnston (talk) 06:37, 16 December 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks; that really does help. The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 18:50, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

PC question
[edit]Is this PC protection appropriate, or should I have levied semiprotection? I get the impression that PC is appropriate whenever semiprotection would be permissible, except when an article is being edited so often that we can't keep up with all of the changes; the NASA article has been vandalised every other day for several weeks. Asking you because you closed the last RFC on PC. Nyttend (talk) 14:45, 17 December 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks for the advice. Throughout this whole process, I've been rather confused about what's going on; while I support the idea of PC, I've been rather fearful of opponents jumping on me if I make a mistake. Nyttend (talk) 20:30, 17 December 2012 (UTC)
Vandalism report
[edit]Hello. I would like to bring to your attention that the same IP user you blocked twice a few months ago, 69.247.190.207, is making disruptive edits again and is ignoring all warnings I've left. At your earliest convenience, could you please block them? Thank you. Regards, Creativity97 02:00, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
- Amazing. Have a read of Wikipedia:Vandalism. There's some useful information there. Catfish Jim and the soapdish 00:17, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
Advice re pullback
[edit]Blade, if you agree that the article discussed at User Talk:John Vandenberg#Have_you_actually_ever_read_WP:BLP? did not qualify for CSD, can you restore it please? I haven't seen it for about a week, but unless something drastic happened since then deletion was silly. EEng (talk) 04:58, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
- No, the deletion was not silly. The article was on an attack meme which had already negatively affected a real life person (in particular their job). The article was based on junk sources, including a weekly magazine (NIE (weekly magazine)) which is pretty much the Polish paper equivalent of Encyclopedia Dramatica. Some of the other sources were simply pages off the web that someone created. None of the sources were reliable. And there is basically no way that the subject - even putting aside notability issues - can be written in a way that does not violate BLP. There's honestly no reason why this article should be on Wikipedia.VolunteerMarek 05:09, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
- It would be best if you would present your arguments in one place for all to read. EEng (talk) 05:42, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
- It certainly didn't strike me as an attack page; the sourcing wasn't exactly perfect, but certainly not "solely meant to disparage the subject". I'll restore it once I'm done checking the developments at WP:RfAR. The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 14:50, 18 December 2012 (UTC)

Blade, thanks for the Advice Pullback. Some of the edit summaries refer to a Talk that still needs restoring. Someone done it. EEng (talk) 10:00, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
FYI
[edit]- I think this guy should be blocked as a disruption only account. It fell under ARBPIA [2], but such accounts can be blocked regardless to AE. My very best wishes (talk) 04:23, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
