Discussion for GeoLocator related issues.
GeoLocator and Linux
[edit]Hi there. There is a problem when you say "place the location marker using alt+click". Linux desktops are using the alt+click combination to move the window where you clicked. To place the location marker under Linux the combination ctrl+click is used instead. YoaR (talk) 18:48, 11 November 2008 (UTC)
- Both [Alt+click] and [Ctrl+click] events are handled as "place marker" action. As I wasn't aware of this X-Win issue, I've just emphasized [Alt+click] alternative because Opera browser intercepts [Ctrl+click] over picture with it's "Save picture as" action... I'll mention both alternatives there, thanks for your remark. Regards, --Teslaton (talk) 15:01, 12 November 2008 (UTC)
- You forgot, didn't you ?Ll0zz (talk) 15:58, 28 March 2010 (UTC)
- Yeah, indeed I did. I've added a mention of [Ctrl+click]/[Alt+click] alternatives in current version of both tool and doc. --Teslaton (talk) 22:56, 29 March 2010 (UTC)
- There is also [X+click] alternative for cases when nothing else works, see known issues. --Teslaton (talk) 14:06, 31 March 2010 (UTC)
- Thank you, had to use [X+click] with Snow Leopard on Intel iMac + Firefox 8.0.1Bluedawe 22:00, 19 December 2011 (UTC)
I could translate your tool to Spanish. If you want so, please tell me here what I have to do. YoaR (talk) 22:39, 12 November 2008 (UTC)
- I tried the GeoLocator with my default browser Opera 10.53 for Linux, but neither Ctrl+click nor Alt+Click is working. So I have to use Firefox where it works without any problems. --Wilder Kaiser (talk) 09:15, 5 July 2010 (UTC)
GeoLocator and iPad
[edit]Similar to Linux, this tool is unusable on the iPad. There are no Ctrl or Alt keys on the standard IOS on screen keyboard. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Glider51 (talk • contribs) 10:53, 13 January 2012 (UTC)
Altitude
[edit]Hi, thanks for this wonderful tool. I often have to tag my articles and images with the altitude. It would be a real help if you could also provide the altitude facility. Topocoding has this altitude facility: http://www.topocoding.com. Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 13:53, 4 December 2008 (UTC)
- done (v0.27 2010/03/20). I've just added elevation reverse geocoding support into current maintenance release (0.27), see ChangeLog for details. Sorry for sluggish response, no time for hobby activities... Regards, --Teslaton (talk) 16:27, 20 March 2010 (UTC)
Support for german Geo-Template
[edit]A support for Template:Coordinate would be nice. We use only this template in the german Wikipedia and we use it very often. Example:
{ {Coordinate|NS=49.759681|EW=6.6440194|type=landmark|dim=25|region=DE-RP} }
It would be nice if you can do this. All parameter are writen in english, so every language could use this template were we invest a lot of brain in it. --Kolossos (talk) 22:37, 5 December 2009 (UTC)
- done (v0.27 2010/03/20). I've added
{{Coordinate}}
template support into "More wikipedia templates" section in current maintenance release 0.27 (ChangeLog), check it out. Sorry for sluggish response, no time for hobby activities... Regards, --Teslaton (talk) 16:27, 20 March 2010 (UTC)
Openstreetmap-Support
[edit]We some lines of code it should be possible to support also Openstreetmap maps in your GoogleMaps-API: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Google_Maps_Example
This would be nice to prove that there are no mistakes/traps in the datas.
Greetings Kolossos (talk) 22:48, 5 December 2009 (UTC)
- It's there in current maintenance release 0.27 (ChangeLog). Sorry for sluggish response, no time for hobby activities... Regards, --Teslaton (talk) 16:27, 20 March 2010 (UTC)
- done. Well, seems I missed your point before (wasn't concentrated enough when reading...). I've added OSM as a layer too (via Mapnik tile server) in 0.28 (changelog). --Teslaton (talk) 14:16, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
Favicon
[edit]Small point, but I'd appreciate GeoLocator having a favicon for ease of bookmarking it in firefox. thanks --Tagishsimon (talk) 23:43, 29 March 2010 (UTC)
- done, just added one... Regards, --Teslaton (talk) 08:18, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
- That's excellent; thanks. --Tagishsimon (talk) 09:21, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
Dutch version
[edit]Hi, just to inform you I have adapted your Geolocator code to make a (simplified) Dutch version on http://wikikml.brinkster.net/coords.html. Michiel1972 (talk) 21:19, 27 May 2010 (UTC)
Add {{Object location dec}}
[edit]Hi, please add commons:template:Object location dec and commons:template:Object location ; thank you very much. Otourly (talk) 18:02, 28 June 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, that would be really great! --Flominator (talk) 09:51, 16 April 2011 (UTC)

- Thanks. --Flominator (talk) 09:28, 25 April 2011 (UTC)
Change stable.toolserver.org

Add Heading Angle
[edit]For augmented reality overlays consisting of historic photos it would be great to write the heading as angles instead of only directions. For example 0° for N (north), 45° for NE and all the angles in between. You probably already are calculating the angles. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Geohistory (talk • contribs) 16:43, 5 July 2010 (UTC)
- It's already there, just change heading precision (h:) to 360 --Teslaton (talk) 22:44, 16 April 2011 (UTC)
License
[edit]I and maybe some others, who want to use this tool maybe even for a comercial webpage, miss the license under which this tool is published to be mentioned in the Wikipediaarticle about Geolocator.--Chriwi (talk) 10:23, 15 July 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, I should definitely put it there. Anyway, there's no problem at all if you just link it, even from a commercial web. Regards, --Teslaton (talk) 22:44, 16 April 2011 (UTC)
Japanese version
[edit]Hi, Teslaton. I'm not a programer. But I have translated and adopted your Geolocator to make Japanese version, because I'm lovin' it! There is on http://www.ac.auone-net.jp/~geo/geo/ Thank you for you nice tool. :> --Was a bee (talk) 19:43, 19 July 2010 (UTC)

Small request from the Poland
[edit]Hello, GeoLocator is a really great job. It would be possible to add a new Template from pl wiki? We use a template:
{{Koordynaty|44|06|43|N|87|54|W}} {{Koordynaty|44|06|43|N|87|54|W|umieść=w tekście}}
Greetings Gagorski (talk) 07:43, 1 April 2011 (UTC)
- done (v0.29 2011/04/16).
- I've added "English (pl)" localization (tools.freeside.sk/geolocator/geolocator.pl.html) with these aspects:
- Poland map preset (rightmost above the map)
- Preview links to Polish map services (Targeo · Szukacz · Zumi · Emapi · KMP · UMP)
- Polish wiki template markup:
{{Koordynaty}}
, infobox snippet (| stopniN = | minutN = | sekundN = | szerokość = | stopniE = | minutE = | sekundE = | długość =
)
- Check it out, please. Regards, --Teslaton (talk) 22:44, 16 April 2011 (UTC)
Recently I applied update to Polish templates for coordinates and now it is possible to pass one parameter only with pretty formatted value as an argument of the template. Would it be possible to introduce secondary localization to serve the new schema as well? The new templates are:
{{Koordynaty|0°00′00,0″N 0°00′00,0″E}} {{Koordynaty|0°00′00,0″N 0°00′00,0″E|umieść=w tekście}} {{Koordynaty|0,0000 0,0000}} {{Koordynaty|0,0000 0,0000|umieść=w tekście}} |koordynaty = 0°00′00,0″N 0°00′00,0″E
There is a comma used as decimal separator, however, it may be still left as dot. The new templates are backward compatible and still accept parameters in old-style.
Best Regards

bug
[edit]Hello,I want to add a coordinate of a metro station to Persian Wikipedia. On google map you can find it here but when i give this url to geolocator, it gives me a coordinate at the middle of neverland (:D). see this. Thank you for your great tool!:)
Ladsgroupبحث 02:53, 12 July 2011 (UTC)
- Hi. Geolocator can parse Google Maps URLs containing plain coordinates, like this one. Your URL, instead, contains an internal Google UID of some placemark. Reagrds, --Teslaton (talk) 14:35, 15 September 2011 (UTC)
Custom template in decimal format
[edit]Hello ! Thank you again for your pretty tool. I have a good question. I searched but I still not find the answers. I would like to have a Custom template in decimal format. How can I do ? What is the syntax ? Regards, Otourly 19:52, 25 July 2011 (UTC)
- In fact is there an help page about customing template ? It could be great ;) Otourly 19:57, 25 July 2011 (UTC)
- Do you have any idea about ? Otourly 20:11, 13 September 2011 (UTC)
- First of all, I'm sorry, I must have missed your question somehow.
- Here are some examples:
- Functionality of each particular macro is displayed in "Debug" expandable section on main screen. Custom template can be specified via
ct=
URL argument. Properly escaped URL with current custom template can be easily obtained by clicking on "GeoLocator (permalink)" hyperlink in "Show location on" section. Problem with window size
[edit]Hi Teslaton! Great tool. Would it be possible to make the window size configureable or enlarge the map window a little bit? While showing the search results, the map window become nearly hidden: Screenshot Geolocator (sorry for the link, currently I cannot upload files to the English wikipedia) --Tuxyso (talk) 07:17, 17 January 2012 (UTC)
Image request template
[edit]Hi Teslaton, could you maybe add de:Vorlage:Bilderwunsch/Listeneintrag to your great tool. It is used to request images in de.wp:
{{Bilderwunsch/Listeneintrag|BREITENGRAD=$latitude|LÄNGENGRAD=$longitude|NAME=}}
As an alternative: Please insert id-properties to the fields for lat and long in your application, so I can take them via javascript from your page. Thanks in advance, --Flominator (talk) 17:36, 10 March 2012 (UTC)
- Hi Flominator. Maybe you can use support for custom templates for this purpose. You can call the tool this way (D.D) or this way (D/M/S.S). User can then click on expanded custom template (containing prepared Bilderwunsch instance) and copy an output.
- Or – there is
#eCustomTemplate
SPAN element, which holds result of custom template, expanded with current coords. You can try to fetch its value from opener window, but there are gotchas: 1. As results section is re-expanded and re-assigned as a HTML string, DOM instance of this named element gets also re-created each time when location is updated... 2. There is currently no callback support in this version. I have other minimalist version for projects, which I use as an coord picker popup. This version is able to push picked location via a callback. Maybe I can incorporate this in public version too. Regards, --Teslaton (talk) 23:34, 10 March 2012 (UTC)- #1 worked awesome. Thanks, --Flominator (talk) 13:23, 11 March 2012 (UTC)
Parser?
[edit]According to the help text, this "20 41 N, 064 32 W" should work. But it produces 20 N 41 E. What's up with that? --KenWalker | Talk 02:59, 10 May 2012 (UTC)
- There is a problem with that leading zero on longitude degrees (064), for some reason it is not supported or have lower priority than other rules. I'll check it on next occasion... Reagrds --Teslaton (talk) 07:41, 15 May 2012 (UTC)

Sorry for my bad english... I use your tool very often. It's a very great tool. Are you interesting to have your tool in french ? If you want, I can make it. Ludo29 (talk) 13:56, 22 June 2012 (UTC)
Commons location type
[edit]Since last year {{location}} uses type:camera
, so type:
shouldn't be included in the parameter string. FYI, commons:Commons:Bots/Requests/Emijrpbot (Task 7), not that region:
is bad if its correct. — Dispenser 00:50, 1 August 2012 (UTC)

Find locations with table computer
[edit]I use your app very often. For the moment i only have access at my iPad. Your app doesn't seem to work on it, as i don't have a mouse to point the place from which i want the coordinates. Kind regards, --Flamenc (talk) 09:25, 13 January 2013 (UTC)
- The tool was designed to be accessed using traditional keyboard/mouse interface. I'm afraid, it would need major refactoring to be seamlessly usable on tablets. Regards --Teslaton (talk) 18:39, 24 January 2013 (UTC)
Size of map
[edit]The size of the map should be dynamic or at leas configurable using url parameter strings. It is way to small on my big screen making it unnecessarily painful to find locations. --Dschwen 17:07, 24 January 2013 (UTC)
- Yeah, I know, that's real pain-in-the-ass on larger screens. Actually, to be honest, I'm using different version with liquid layout internally, I'll try to force myself to consolidate it a bit and deploy it here sometime soon... Regards --Teslaton (talk) 18:30, 24 January 2013 (UTC)

ctrl-shift-click on OS X
[edit]Hello! Thank you for making such a great tool. It has one problem however: for OS X users (at least with Firefox), it is impossible to set the viewing diameter, since ctrl-shift-click (due to containing ctrl-click) will open a context menu before your tool can receive it. Could you make alt-shift-click work as well? Thank you. darkweasel94 (talk) 09:30, 28 May 2013 (UTC)
- done (v0.31 2013/06/01) I've patched it to allow both
[Ctrl+Shift+click]
and[Alt+Shift+click]
, check it out on your setup. Regards --Teslaton (talk) 09:14, 1 June 2013 (UTC)- Thank you, it works now. darkweasel94 (talk) 11:42, 2 June 2013 (UTC)
No map
[edit]I was told, that Google changed Google Maps API Version 2 to Version 3. Is that the reason, that there is no map? --Andreas Schwarzkopf (talk) 09:51, 20 November 2013 (UTC)
- Yeah, that definitely is the cause, I'll try to migrate it someday soon. To be correct: they've sent multiple notifications about APIv2 end of lifetime during last year or two, but I hoped they'll do try to make the transition transparent (via some decorator/wrapper interface). Aparently, that is not a case, as you can see... --Teslaton (talk) 20:43, 20 November 2013 (UTC)
- I spent three terrible days without your fantastic tool. I think that you made a great job to make it work again. Now, I'm able to re-upload files on Commons; thank you so much for it! Pymouss Let's talk 12:45, 24 November 2013 (UTC)
Using other maps?
[edit]Is it possible to use Bing Maps in GeoLocator? The Google maps are sometimes off. I noticed this locating some photos in the ruins of Petra in Jordan (~ 20m off).

suggestions
[edit]Teslaton, that is a great tool, but I have a few suggestions about improvements:
- place File:Compass Rose English North.svg somewhere on that page - on Commons most location templates are encouraged to add heading of the photo, which I usually eye-ball and convert to one of the standard directions. Having this image on your page would simplify the process.
- c:template:location dec become a redirect to c:template:location which can take decimal of dms coordinates. The format does not matter as both are displayed exactly the same way, so I do not see a need for having both on the page. Same for "object location" templates
- Since location templates are encouraged to contain heading: how about adding "|heading:?" behind the coordinates, so it is easier to add.
Thanks for the tool. --Jarekt (talk) 16:16, 16 July 2014 (UTC)
prec parameter
[edit]Hi Teslaton,
I love your tool and I have used it for geocoding all my uploads to Commons over the last many years. Many thansk for creating and maintaining it.
One thing which has often bothered me, was that there was no natural way to indicate the precision of the most likely camera position. Sometimes you know it very accurately, sometimes not so, and this can at times be important information. Then, today, I read c:Commons:Village_pump#Using_precision_parameter_in_location_template and learned that there actually is a parameter in the Location template for specifying a camera location precision. I think that is really neat. Now, what would be cool would be an option to also specify this precision via some special keys pressed in your tool, similarly to how you can indicate the heading and the scale, such that you could be assisted graphically in spefifying the precision when generating the templates.
Is this a feature you could consider implementing?

Automatic tilting to 45 degree angle
[edit]Recently, the google satellite images used in your tool to depict large towns have started tilting automatically to a 45 degree angled view when the tool is zoomed in to extreme closeup.
This is a nuisance, because it is much easier to geolocate things accurately from an overhead view, but the only way to restore an overhead view is to zoom out again, which also makes it harder to geolocate.
Are you able to restore the option of an overhead view for the highest levels of closeup? Bahnfrend (talk) 13:49, 25 November 2015 (UTC)
- done (v0.35 2015/11/26) In fact, it was possible to turn off the 45° tilt manually using the tilt icon on the right of the map, but I agree that non-tilt view is more reasonable default. Luckily, it was possible to invert the behavior via
MapOptions.tilt
. Now the map keeps to be orthogonal by default when zooming-in, while it's still possible to turn on tilting manually. --Teslaton (talk) 21:16, 26 November 2015 (UTC)
Thanks, much appreciated. Bahnfrend (talk) 00:54, 27 November 2015 (UTC)
Wikidata & other geocoordinates
[edit]Hi! Thank you for the great tool I use every week multiple times! In the tool there is a possibility to select some Commons and Wikipedia templates. But I also use the tool to add coordinates to Wikidata. To get this, the best format is {latdegdec}, {londegdec}
. Would it be possible to add such a line for Wikidata too? Besides that I use this format to add coordinates to Wikidata, I also use it for other purposes. Thanks! Romaine (talk) 19:06, 12 March 2017 (UTC)
- @Teslaton: Is there any news? Romaine (talk) 03:57, 5 February 2018 (UTC)
- Sorry for the late response. Yes, maybe I can add that basic format into some section. In the meantime, you can bookmark a URL with pre-filled custom template:
- Resulting markup can then be clicked and copy&pasted just as the built-in formats. --Teslaton (talk) 07:23, 8 February 2018 (UTC)
Redirecting

Magnification change
[edit]Hi, many thanks for this very useful tool, which I use often.
Is it possible, after applying some coordinates to place the marker, to jump directly to a high magnification that shows an area of, say, 10 km around the marker? --Megatherium (talk) 18:21, 27 April 2017 (UTC)
Google Data for China
[edit]Due to restrictions on geographic data in China, instead of using the usual WGS84, Google Maps uses a related, obfuscated pseudo-datum called GCJ-02 for all Chinese (region: CN
) vector data. This causes GeoLocator to provide the wrong coordinates and addresses for Google Map pins placed on mainland China. Luckily this obfuscation is pretty reversible; you can see a sample library as File:PRcoords_Cheatsheet.pdf.
For GeoLocator this probably means two changes:
- Coordinate readout: For "CN" locations obtained from Google's street map, provide a de-GCJed readout and suggest users to switch over to the result on a non-Google-street source. (Note that their terrain altitude shade is correct, so users might not be wrong if they are just looking for mountains.)
- Geocode: Geocode results for region and altitude is correct in China, but street addresses require GCJed input. If you really do want to fix it, re-do a request for a correct address after seeing
region: CN
.

Google Maps using is down?
[edit]Hello Teslaton.
Your tool is great, I use it every day! But today, it doesn't work: the Google Maps display no longer works, the map is obscured and only the words "For development purposes only" appear. The search engine also no longer works, and the OSM map cannot be selected. For the record, I'm in France and I use Google Chrome. Thank you in advance. Have a nice day, Sebleouf (talk) 10:16, 1 February 2019 (UTC)
- Hi. The problem is related to recent "updates" in Google Maps API policy [7][8]. They've lowered free API access limits (from 25,000 per day to 28,000 per month...) and, at the same time, are forcing API users to enable billing, so that requests over that free amount can be charged. I'm definitely not willing to pay them for this kind of usage (free non-commercial wiki tool), so the straightforward solution would be to migrate to different map viewer library (OpenLayers, Leaflet, etc.). The problem is, I don't really have enough time right now to get this done soon, so I will try to investigate other possible solutions for the meantime (but I can't promise anything). --Teslaton (talk) 18:53, 2 February 2019 (UTC)
- I've filled a Google Maps API support ticket with question about possible non-commercial API access (providing broader or no rate limits). --Teslaton (talk) 19:36, 2 February 2019 (UTC)
- Good evening. I understand the problem. Google's omnipresence in the market allows them to charge what they want, and it's always difficult to do otherwise. Fortunately, OpenStreetMap exists for maps. It is quite normal not to pay for this service. I'll do it another way, it's okay. Anyway, thank you for your answer. Notify me if your tool is back on day. Have nice contributions and maybe see you in Bratislava (I plan to go this spring). Sebleouf (talk) 20:38, 2 February 2019 (UTC)
- Google is a major donor to Wikimedia. As your tool is very important to Wikimedia editors, you should encourage Google to give your tool free access to Google Maps. Bahnfrend (talk) 09:51, 9 February 2019 (UTC)
Aktron (t|c) 17:44, 13 February 2019 (UTC)

New Google Maps issue
[edit]Hi Teslaton: the Geolocator tool has now an error message that says that "For development purposes only". Can this be fixed?
As this happened before, can at least the tool be set to show OSM first instead of Google? Romaine (talk) 11:21, 31 October 2019 (UTC)

[edit]Ahoj. Dnes odpoledne se na mapě opět objevil nápis "For development purposes only", zablokovalo se vyhledávání a víceméně to jede ve stejném módu, který jsme zaznamenali loni. Díky moc za opravu! Aktron (t|c) 18:58, 31 October 2020 (UTC)
- Ahoj, objevilo se to tam opět. Jak můžu s těmito věcmi pomoci? Díky moc! Aktron (t|c) 22:07, 5 January 2021 (UTC)
Same issue ;)
[edit]Hi Teslaton, I'm sorry to bother you with this issue, but do you think you could set your tool to show OSM? I use your tool fairly frequently to add locations along hiking routes, and I find that OSM is much better than Google Maps with respect to non-surfaced roads and hiking trails. Would be very grateful! Regards, MartinD (talk) 13:50, 4 February 2021 (UTC)
Same issue
[edit]If it possible to add at least one other map/satelite image, because in actual situation, where Google Maps are diplayed with "grey fog" and text "For development purposes only", there is hard to read map/satelite image (and it hurt my eyes ).VVerka5 (talk) 09:51, 14 July 2021 (UTC)
User entered Google Maps API key
[edit]Since paying for Google Maps API mey result in large amounts to be paid, is it possible to allow users to supply their own Google Maps API key in UI? I've seen that done for other projects Maxim75 (talk) 07:02, 5 February 2021 (UTC)
OpenStreetMap Layers
[edit]Hi, I've noticed that OpenStreetMap layer is no more visible. Is there any reason why it was removed? Thanks.--Dega180 (talk) 13:51, 23 February 2021 (UTC)
Elevation
[edit]Hi Teslaton. In the French Wikipedia we would be interested in having a template that allows us to display the elevation from the input of the coordinates, such as {{Elevation|47|54|09|N|1|54|32|E}} ( exemple of Orléans) which would return the value 125 m.
Geolocator allows the display of elevation, but we would like to recover it in value. Do you think this is possible? Thank's. Roland45 (talk) 14:18, 27 June 2021 (UTC)
Zoom in sooner
[edit]When we enter our coordinates in the box and click apply, the map should zoom in, and not stay at the world view. Alas, we have to zoom in by hand. Jidanni (talk) 08:33, 15 February 2023 (UTC)
MTB layer dead
[edit]On the top of the map there is ...OSM...OCM...MTB. The latter is dead today for me. Jidanni (talk) 08:37, 15 February 2023 (UTC)
