The IRA's Balcombe Street Gang Unit

Part of the Troubles
LocationEngland, mainly London
DateOctober 1974 - December 1975
TargetBritish Soldiers, Politicians, Businesses
Attack type
Time bomb, Shooting, Throw Bomb
Deaths19
Injured388

The Balcombe Street Gang ASU was made up of mainly IRA Volunteers from the Irish Republic with clean police records as opposed to Volunteers from the North who were known to police.

Background

[edit]

The Balcombe Street Unit is the most successful IRA unit ever to carry out a bombing campaign in England in particular London & even more particular London's "West End". They attacked several of their targets twice. In 1973, the IRA extended its what they termed "guerrilla" campaign to mainland Britain, attacking military and symbolically important targets to both increase pressure on the British government, via popular British opinion, to concede to their demand to withdraw from Northern Ireland & to maintain morale for IRA supporters as well. The bombing campaign by the IRA in England began on the 8th of March of 1973 when an 11 man & woman ASU (Active Service Unut) that included well known people now like The Price Sisters & Gerry Kelly bombed the Old Bailey, despite warnings 1 person died of a heart-attack & about 200 were injured some seriously.. The IRA always belived a 1 bomb in England was worth 30 in Belfast the huge media respones & discussion it had created by the Old Bailey was massive & seemed to prove the IRA's theory. The 11 man & woman IRA ASU was caught tho that day trying to leave England by plane to Ireland. Although the IRA achieved it's objective it was naive to try & leave the same as the British security forces would be all over escape routes from England. to Ireland. The IRA GHQ realized this mistake & decided instead of sending large 11or 10 people ASU's they would use smaller sleeper-cells of between 4 - 6 Volunteers. & the IRA attacks in England for the rest of 1973 started to become more professional & sophisticated, the next IRA attack on London happend on the 18th of August 1973 when two IRA firebombs exploded at Harrods Department store in London causing some damage but no injuries or deaths. This was the start of a prolonged bombing campaign in England as just four days later an IRA book bomb exploded at the Conservative Party Central Office in London injuring sveral people but not seriously. injuring anyone.

By 1974, mainland Britain saw an average of one attack—successful or otherwise—every three days. These attacks included five explosions which had occurred in Birmingham on 14 July which were possibly the first main attacks on the English Mid-Lands.

The bombing

[edit]

After the 1975 PIRA/British Army truce began to break the IRA's Balcombe Street ASU stepped up its bombing and shooting campaign on mainland Britain. On the night of 18 November 1975 the unit picked Waltons Restaurant to bomb. Two civilians, Audrey Edgson (aged 45) and Theodore Williams (aged 49), were killed [1] when a bomb was thrown by one of the IRA Volunteers through the window of Walton’s Restaurant in Walton Street, Chelsea. The device, injured 23 other people, the oldest of them 71 years of age. In the bomb the IRA used miniature ball bearings to maximise injuries. This was a calculated bombing campaign aimed at destroying businesses and scaring customers in London's West End. Other previous attacks by the unit in 1975 included Scott’s Oyster Bar bombing on 12 November, the London Hilton bombing on 5 September and the Caterham_Arms_Pub_Bombing on 27 August. In total the unit carried out over 40 attacks on mainland Britain.[citation needed]

Aftermath

[edit]

The IRA's units bombing campaign would continue until December 1975 when they were caught at the siege of Balcombe Street. ,[2] The unit would eventually end up planting close to 50 bombs in England and carried out several shootings which cost millions of pounds. In custody the ASU also admitted to carrying out the Guildford pub bombings and the Kings Arms, Woolwich bombing for which the Guildford Four had been arrested, and received lengthy jail terms.

Formatting tips re Downpatrick bombing 1990

[edit]

Great addition, well-done article! Just a few formatting pointers:

  • Except for dates, spell out numbers under 10, so it's "four soldiers" not "4 soldiers"
  • don't use "&" in prose
  • Don't leave a space between the period/comma/colon and the start of a footnote

Just some minor formatting points, hope you'll continue to contribute great articles! MatthewVanitas (talk) 04:46, 31 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Lists should be list articles and not categories

[edit]

Hello. Regarding Category:Irish Republican Army Ambushes - this isn't what categories are for, this kind of thing should be a list article. So I'd suggest you move it to something along the likes of List of Irish Republican Army ambushes and tag the category for deletion with {{db-self}} - as a minor note, we only capitalise first words and proper names. One other thing - whenever you create a page, you should put it in at least one category, it helps other people and maintenance bots to find it. Another advantage is that looking for suitable categories helps you work out what the current hierarchy looks like and how a new category might fit into it.Le Deluge (talk) 21:40, 9 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I can see, you have not objected to this or otherwise replied to it, so I will take it that you are in agreement with making it a list and not a category. I will implement this for you. – Fayenatic London 20:33, 12 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Your contributed article, Provisional IRA vs SAS

[edit]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

Hello, I noticed that you recently created a new page, Provisional IRA vs SAS. First, thank you for your contribution; Wikipedia relies solely on the efforts of volunteers such as you. Unfortunately, the page you created covers a topic on which we already have a page – Timeline of the Northern Ireland Troubles and peace process. Because of the duplication, your article has been tagged for speedy deletion. Please note that this is not a comment on you personally and we hope you will continue helping to improve Wikipedia. If the topic of the article you created is one that interests you, then perhaps you would like to help out at Timeline of the Northern Ireland Troubles and peace process. If you have new information to add, you might want to discuss it at the article's talk page.

If you think the article you created should remain separate, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Additionally if you would like to have someone review articles you create before they go live so they are not nominated for deletion shortly after you post them, allow me to suggest the article creation process and using our search feature to find related information we already have in the encyclopedia. Try not to be discouraged. Wikipedia looks forward to your future contributions. Vanjagenije (talk) 16:05, 16 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

As reviewing administrator, I did not delete the article, but I moved it to Draft:Provisional IRA vs SAS. This is a tricky field to work in , as you no doubt realize, and it would probably not be a good idea to try to introduce it as an article until you have it finished. DGG ( talk ) 17:40, 16 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
You just recreated the Provisional IRA vs SAS page again and I deleted it. Please, work on the draft (Draft:Provisional IRA vs SAS). Do not recreate the article. Vanjagenije (talk) 22:53, 16 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, thank you for not deleting it. I did not recreate the article (atleast not on purpose) I had gone out for a few hours left the page on edit mode, when i came back I refreshed the page which is how it recreated. I will work on the draft Draft:Provisional IRA vs SAS from now on. Thanks User:tdv123 13:35, 17 June (UTC)

Non-free rationale for File:NewtonhamiltonBomb.jpeg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:NewtonhamiltonBomb.jpeg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described in section F6 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Vanjagenije (talk) 22:55, 16 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The Troubles edits

[edit]

Hello, I really appreciate the work you've been putting into these articles. You a few requests and guidelines to follow, to make things easier for other editors.

  • MOS:AMPERSAND: don't use "&". Instead use "and" in normal text.
  • MOS:DATESNO: don't use "the" with dates. "The bombing occurred on 10 August" is fine, not "the 10 August."
  • MOS:DECADE: per Wikipedia's manual of style, it should be "1970s" not "1970's"

Thanks for doing this and for your work in this area. Valenciano (talk) 21:15, 17 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much, I'll keep these tips in mind in future. User:tdv123 20:08, 19 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Official IRA Belfast Brigade, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Falls Road (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, DPL bot (talk) 10:53, 2 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Your draft article, Draft:Provisional IRA vs SAS

[edit]

Hello, Tdv123. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, "Provisional IRA vs SAS".

In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}}, {{db-draft}}, or {{db-g13}} code.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Thanks for your submission to Wikipedia, and happy editing. Legacypac (talk) 02:30, 12 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion discussion about Attack on RUC Birches barracks

[edit]

Hello, Tdv123,

I wanted to let you know that there's a discussion about whether Attack on RUC Birches barracks should be deleted. Your comments are welcome at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Attack on RUC Birches barracks .

If you're new to the process, articles for deletion is a group discussion (not a vote!) that usually lasts seven days. If you need it, there is a guide on how to contribute. Last but not least, you are highly encouraged to continue improving the article; just be sure not to remove the tag about the deletion nomination from the top.

Thanks,

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Timeline of the Irish Republican movements' actions during the Troubles requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.

The urls listed on the deletion nomination are examples only. There's copying from multiple other pages from the same website, as well as unattributed copying from multiple Wikipedia articles. This is your final warning. Further copyright violations will result in you being blocked from editing.— Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 20:12, 27 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

You have been blocked indefinitely from editing for violating copyright policy by copying text or images into Wikipedia from another source without evidence of permission. You have been previously warned that this is against policy, but have persisted, as you did at Timeline of the Northern Ireland Troubles in Britain. Please take this opportunity to ensure that you understand our copyright policy and our policies regarding how to use non-free content.
If you think there are good reasons for being unblocked, please read the guide to appealing blocks, then add the following text below the block notice on your talk page: {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}.  — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 11:20, 1 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

What copyright policy have I violated? I guess you to delete the 50+ articles I've written for The Troubles [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php? I've contibuted probably more reliable info to this subject than anyone else. for example what's wrong with this subject I wrote? 1973 Old Bailey bombing

The rest....

In Ireland

In England

Mainland Europe

IRA London & Southern England bombing & shooting campaign October 1974 - December 1975

title=Template:Campaignbox_Northern_Ireland_Troubles&action=edit] as well then? Seriously you told me not to use direct text from CAIN & I didn't I wrote all in my own words. [User talk:Tdv123|talk]] 13:03, 1 April (UTC)

Unlock me & tell & tell me what I can & can't do? all the stuff I did in the last article was written in my own words. I thought I was allowed to add were I got the source from in Cite error: There are <ref> tags on this page without content in them (see the help page). ? Is it an anti=Irish thing.

Copyright violations since your last warning: Some of the material you added to List of terrorist incidents in 1974 on March 30 was copied from here and some of the material you added to List of terrorist incidents in 1975 on March 31 was copied from here.
Also, I have removed copyright violations from your new article Timeline of the Northern Ireland Troubles in Britain, for example from here and here. It looks like you may have copied this from elsewhere on Wikipedia, judging by the access dates, but I can't locate where. Regardless, the prose originally appeared on the BBC website, so it's not okay to add it to your article. There's also unattributed copying from elsewhere on Wikipedia for example from 1972 Aldershot bombing and Attacks on the London Underground. Please see WP:copying within Wikipedia for information on copying from one Wikipedia article to another. If you are the sole author of the prose that was moved, attribution is not required. (You were not blocked for unattributed copying; I provide this as information.)
To sum up, I have blocked your account, because in spite of repeated warnings, you continued to add copyright material to this wiki in violation of our copyright policy and copyright law. You cannot resume editing until you provide a clear statement that demonstrates that you have read and understand our copyright policy and intend to follow it in the future. — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 12:24, 1 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

So if I delete my account will all the articles I wrote be deleted? [User talk:Tdv123|talk]] 13:34, 1 April (UTC)

It's not possible to delete your account, and your articles will not be deleted unless there's a valid policy-based reason to do so. — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 14:51, 1 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Why do you have to be so awkward about this? Can you not just show what I did wrong so I can at least the statement? If I copy & paste something from a page I created myself how is that copyright infringement? [User talk:Tdv123|talk]] 16:31, 1 April (UTC)

Can You please show me what you want me to do? I've contributed more than other user to the topics on The Troubles and this the thanks I get? not even a warning & not won't telling me how I can fix what I did wrong. This is just low. [User talk:Tdv123|talk]] 16:31, 1 April (UTC)

Actually, you've received three warnings regarding copyright violations for prose (there's also numerous copyright notices regarding images):

Yes, that is correct & when I was notified about the two articles 1994 Heatrow mortar attackks, and Battle at Lisnamuck I edited the problem & there was no other problems with the pages. That's 3 out of about 70 articles I've created. And what material did i copy onto List of terrorist incidents in 1975 from [1] ? For example the first entry I typed in "The IRA attacked two hotels in London. They fired shots into the Carlton Tower Hotel and later the Portman Hotel. 12 people were injured in total from both attacks." The cain.ulst.ac.uk site says "The Irish Republican Army (IRA) carried out two gun attacks on hotels in London. Shots were fired into the Carlton Tower Hotel and the Portman Hotel. Twelve people were injured in the attacks." <--- There two totally different sentences. There's not one entry on the CAIN: site relating to an IRA attack that copied into [2]. I can tell because the CAIN Site always starts the sentence of with "The Irish Republican Army (IRA)" Not one sentence on the List_of_terrorist_incidents_in_1975 pages starts of like that. So I can not see what you are talking about, when I talk about the IRA I always say either Provisional IRA ( or PIRA) or Official IRA (or OIRA) or Real IRA (or RIRA) etc... so people know what IRA I'm talking about I never say just Irish Republican Army because people don't know who I'm referring to, people not familiar with the subject usually assume IRA or Irish Republican Army refers to the Provisional IRA as they are the best known but there's at least seven different paramilitary organizations who use the name IRA. The Old IRA fought in the 1919 - 1921 Irish War of Independence, The Anti-Treaty IRA fought in the 1922-1923 Irish Civil War, they also fought two small campaigns in the 40's & 50's called the Northern Campaign (Irish Republican Army) (The 40's one) & Border Campaign (Irish Republican Army) (the 50's one), the Provisional IRA fought during The Troubles they were active from 1970 - 1997, they in between that time they called 3 ceasefires, the first in June 1972 for 3 weeks, the second from February 1975 - January 1976 and the final one from August 1994 - February 1996, the Official IRA fought during The Troubles they were active from 1970 - 1972 although they carried out a handful of attacks up until 1982, The Continuity IRA fought during The Troubles & the ongoing Dissident Irish Republican campaign they've been active since 1994 - present, the Real IRA are involved in the ongoing Dissident Irish Republican campaign and have active from 1997 - present, and the New IRA is also involved in the Dissident Irish Republican campaign and have been active from around 2012 - present. that's it that's the seven IRA's. There's more Irish Republican involved in the The Troubles & [[Dissident Irish Republican campaign but they are also Irish Socialists & use name like the Irish People's Liberation Organization or Irish National Liberation Army. Sorry to bore but I did tell you I'm probably the most knowledgeable Wiki user on Irish Republicanism & The Troubles. What waste, me not being able to edit.

I did not copy ONE sentences from here to List_of_terrorist_incidents_in_1975 or from any Wiki created by another user, I didn't even know of the page Attacks on the London Underground existed until you accused me of copying from it. So you are just lying about that, I checked all the entries I put into the page & none of them match the CAIN sites dates. What they do match is entries on this page Provisional IRA's Balcombe Street Gang, which is a page I myself created. And I've never heard of people infringing on their own copyrighted material, because you can't, it's the same with List of terrorist incidents in 1974. So I would like an apology from you, I mean how dare claim I was stealing other users work without presenting any proof, some of those articles took me days to finish like Timeline of the Troubles in the Republic of Ireland took me a fucking week to complete , how dare you. It's the same with the BBC sites, http://news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/hi/dates/stories/march/15/newsid_2543000/2543605.stm & http://news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/hi/dates/stories/january/29/newsid_2506000/2506083.stm I copied nothing from those pages to Timeline of the Northern Ireland Troubles in Britain in fact today was my first day visiting this site > http://news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/hi/dates/stories/march/15/newsid_2543000/2543605.stm and i don't I've seen the other before either, I know because any BBC site I use as a source of information I always references the page like this one http://news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/hi/dates/stories/february/22/newsid_2519000/2519029.stm or this one http://news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/hi/dates/stories/july/17/newsid_2514000/2514429.stm or this one http://news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/hi/dates/stories/november/14/newsid_4724000/4724181.stm and you can see I've referenced them on the Wiki page I was creating. And I was not finished editing the page (thanks to you I only got about 5% done), that's the only reason why anything from another Wiki might be there,on the Troubles in Britain page I was working on I have to remember the hundreds (possibly thousands) of dates & attacks/incidents that's my method to help me remember & when I'm finished editing a page I put into my own words, but you didn't give me a chance to finish the thing, and I see it's not the first time you made similar mistakes from looking at your talk page. You are completely wrong about me copying from CAIN or the BBC sites & only partially right about other Wiki pages. I think I deserve another chance, and I won't publish the page in future until I'm fully finished editing. [User talk:Tdv123|talk]] 16:31, 1 April (UTC)
