Zeus is a really cool dude and he thinks these WP:ORE articles are cool too

Greetings WikiProject Oregon guys and gals. Once again it is time for another edition of the our niche market Collaboration Of The Week. As always, thank you to those who worked on the Ross Tower and Walton. For this week we have the Calapooya Mountains and by request (and in honor of the opening) the venerable Portland Saturday Market. Just remember, if you are feeling blue, try breathing (rimshot please). Once again, click here to opt out of these messages, or click here to make a suggestion for a future COTW. There's a difference between articles that only cite press releases and not having anything to cite other than PR material. Its entirely possible that the original creator might have had a conflict of interest or simply didn't understand our reference policy, and when a contributor encounters an article with problems such as this, its better to attempt add references and remove the POV before taking it to articles for deletion.

That being said, if there were no sources available other than press releases, it would be a entirely different situation, I would probably side with you on deletion. -Senseless!... says you, says me 16:18, 8 April 2009 (UTC)

I don't need a lecture about improvements to an article not being a reason for deletion. I know that. I nominated it because after combing through a couple pages of Google News archives, I found nothing but more press releases. Steven Walling (talk) 18:10, 8 April 2009 (UTC)

Hello

Sure, I'd like to help out. I just need to gather sources first. I'm not sure how long this will take. Although he is notable in regards to tai chi chuan, general Chen Wangting is perhaps not a very important figure in the overall history of China (or even the Ming Dynasty for that matter), and will not be covered in a whole lot of texts or journal articles. Nevertheless, I will try my best to research his history and will start looking in JSTOR first. Regards.--Pericles of AthensTalk 01:32, 21 April 2009 (UTC)

Hi again. JSTOR doesn't have any relevant journal articles on Chen Wangting, I'm afraid. I'll keep looking elsewhere. I may have trouble finding sources if nothing is located at my university library (George Mason University).--Pericles of AthensTalk 02:53, 21 April 2009 (UTC)

Since you're both an admin and a member of the Dogs WikiProject, I'm bugging you with this. When you get a chance, could you drop by the Maltese talk page and add some input? There is a months-long edit war going on over the heritage/history of the dog (with nationalistic overtones) that has completely ruined any attempt at moving this article forward. I'm at the point where I wonder "how much is too much" with respect to the history of the dog. I'm of the opinion that not every minute detail needs to be added, especially since there isn't much substance to the rest of the article. Crotchety Old Man (talk) 13:11, 29 April 2009 (UTC)

GA Sweeps update

Hello, I hope you are doing well. I am contacting you because you have contributed or expressed interest in the GA sweeps process. Last month, only two articles were reviewed. This is definitely a low point after our peak at the beginning of the process with 163 articles reviewed in September 2007. After nearly two years, the running total has just passed the 50% mark. In order to expediate the reviewing, several changes have been made to the process. A new worklist has been created, detailing which articles are left to review. All exempt and previously reviewed articles have already been removed from the list. Instead of reviewing by topic, you can consider picking and choosing whichever articles interest you.

All exempt articles that have reached FA status have now been moved to a separate section at the end of the running total page. I went through all of the members' running totals and updated the results to reflect the move. As a result your reviewed article total may have decreased a bit. After removing duplicate articles and these FAs, the running total leaves us at ~1,400 out of 2,808 articles reviewed.

If you currently have any articles on hold or at GAR, please consider concluding those reviews and updating your results. I'm hoping that this new list and increased efforts can help us to increase the number of reviews. We are always looking for new members to assist with the remaining articles, so if you know of anybody that can assist please direct them to the GA sweeps page. In addition, for every member that reviews 100 articles or has a significant impact on the process, will get an award when they reach that mark. If only 14 editors achieve this feat starting now, we would be done with Sweeps! Of course, having more people reviewing less articles would be better for all involved, so please consider asking others to help out. If you have any questions about the process, reviewing, or need help with a particular article, please contact me or OhanaUnited and we'll be happy to help. --Happy editing! Nehrams2020 (talkcontrib) 03:28, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

I saw that you semi-protected the article for vandalism. I'm not sure if you are aware of it but all the vandalism came from one of our infamous vandals, Bambifan101. As of right now all the accounts and IPs of the user have been blocked, so I don't think protection is necessary at this point. As such, would you consider unprotecting the article at this point? Icestorm815Talk 22:26, 9 May 2009 (UTC)

Consumer Cellular

Hello! On March 29th, you deleted Consumer Cellular for being a FAIL for advertising. The original entry was written by marketing people. I have written a new version which is focused on the company's impact in Portland, as well as their partnership with AARP, and it is in my sandbox I've worked on this with the editors and it's been greenlit for posting. As you are the original deleting admin, I would like to also have your blessing to ensure that the page has merit this time, and does not meet your deletion criteria under Wikipedia:CSD#A7 or Wikipedia:CORP. I would also like to add the page to WikiProject Oregon after it is re-posted. Thanks so much.PDX sunshine (talk) 16:16, 26 May 2009 (UTC)

GA Sweeps June update

Thanks to everyone's dedicated efforts to the GA Sweeps process, a total of 396 articles were swept in May! That more than doubles our most successful month of 163 swept articles in September 2007 (and the 2 articles swept in April)! I plan to be sending out updates at the beginning of each month detailing any changes, updates, or other news until Sweeps are completed. So if you get sick of me, keep reviewing articles so we can be done (and then maybe you'll just occasionally bump into me). We are currently over 60% done with Sweeps, with just over a 1,000 articles left to review. With over 40 members, that averages out to about 24 articles per person. If each member reviews an article a day this month (or several!), we'll be completely finished. I know that may be asking for a lot, but it would allow us to complete Sweeps and allow you to spend more time writing GAs, reviewing GANs, or focusing on other GARs (or whatever else it is you do to improve Wikipedia) as well as finish ahead of the two-year mark coming up in August. I recognize that this can be a difficult process at times and appreciate your tenacity in spending time in ensuring the quality of the older GAs. Feel free to recruit other editors who have reviewed GANs in the past and might be interested in the process. The more editors, the less the workload, and hopefully the faster this will be completed. If you have any questions about reviews or the process let me know and I'll be happy to get back to you. Again, thank you for taking the time to help with the process, I appreciate your efforts! --Happy editing! Nehrams2020 (talkcontrib) 18:15, 1 June 2009 (UTC)

Hello to members of the WikiProject o' Oregon. Once again it is time for the Collaboration Of The Week. Request to participate in University of Washington survey based on ideas gathered during the Wikipedia focus group you attended

Hello again! As we mentioned when you attended our focus group back in April, our goal was to use your feedback to help design an embedded application that could quickly communicate useful information about other Wikipedians. We have now created a few images that we feel represent some of what you thought was important. We would appreciate it if you took a few minutes of your time to complete an online survey that investigates whether or not these images would be useful to you.

To take the survey, click this link.

Please feel free to share the link with other Wikipedians. The more feedback, the better! The survey is completely anonymous and takes less than 10 minutes to complete. All data is used for university research purposes only.

Even if you are unable or unwilling to take this survey, we want to thank you for attending our focus group. Your generous contribution of your time and ideas was greatly appreciated! Commprac01 (talk) 21:42, 8 June 2009 (UTC)

Mike Arrington

My frustration is tempered by your use of tosh. I still believe that the article is too light and upbeat and that a number of people have tried to contribute a balancing element (often by adding "is a troll") so I attempted it in a calmer manner. Perhaps the material is out of place (or rubbish) but I believe that it is verifiable that he engages in yellow journalism (or its online equivalent) and makes incendiary remarks and that this information can be added to the article without compromising neutrality (perhaps by better attributing and substantiating biased statements). Perhaps something along the lines of the Praise and Criticism section for William Randolph Hearst or George W. Bush's Public Image and Perception section would be more appropriate.
Thanks for your time. RegisFrey (talk) 15:04, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

GA Sweeps July update

Thanks to everyone's dedicated efforts to the GA Sweeps process, a total of 290 articles were swept in June! Last month was our second most successful month in reviewing articles (after May). We are currently over 70% done with Sweeps, with just under 800 articles left to review. With nearly 50 members, that averages out to about 15 articles per person. If each member reviews an article every other day this month (or several!), we'll be completely finished. This may sound difficult, but if everyone completes their reviews, Sweeps would be completed in less than two years when we first started (with only four members!). With the conclusion of Sweeps, each editor could spend more time writing GAs, reviewing at the backlogged GAN, or focusing on other GARs. Again, I want to thank you for using your time to ensure the quality of the older GAs. Feel free to recruit other editors who have reviewed GANs in the past and might be interested in the process. The more editors, the less the workload, and hopefully the faster this will be completed. If you have any questions about reviews or the process let me know and I'll be happy to get back to you. Hi Steven, I wanted to note that I understand that your motives in joining the Advisory Council were good, and do regret the way my comments formed on the page; the rant was not directed at yourself, rather more generally applied the sentiments of your statement towards the situation. Please accept my apologies for the way this was expressed, I should not have directed them in the way I did which come across as attacking you personally. This is an arbitrary deletion by someone who has no knowledge of the subject at hand. On the principle outlined, no WP pages would have external links as they would all be merely classed as 'web directories'. This means countless thousands of WP articles would have to have links deleted, which is obviously illogical. These 5 links deleted are a tiny but salient representation drawn from around 1.2 million results for J. Krishnamurti on Google. 5 out of 1.2m is not a web directory. Official links, such as Schools, have also been deleted, which is manifestly wrong as they represent the very core of this man's life and work, which would be apparent to anyone who had actually read the article concerned. I am undoing this arbitrary deletion.58.165.42.120 (talk) 06:43, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

Electromagnetic Torture

Hi! You recently deleted Electromagnetic Torture as patent nonsense. Could you expand a little on why it qualifies as G1? I originally removed the G1 tag, because I didn't feel that the article was incomprehensible text or gibberish. Basically what it said was "Here's the subject. It's hard to find information about the subject, because there are no resources available. Until now! Here is my blog, which discusses the subject." (Based on memory, obviously I can't see deleted content.) I then tagged it as G11, which may be questionable, because of the existence of the first sentence, which tells "what" the subject is, but I felt that the sole purpose of the article was to promote someone's blog, and I think content like that should be deleted under G11. I'm still trying to learn the nuances of CSD, so could you help me out and explain why the article qualified as G1? Thanks, Jafeluv (talk) 11:45, 27 August 2009 (UTC)

Ok, thanks for the explanation. By no means am I questioning that the article had to be deleted :) Regards, Jafeluv (talk) 07:42, 28 August 2009 (UTC)

[1] steven, thought you might be interested to know: i did rough outlines of the two APIs that are part of the DW proposal. the GUI-front-end-API-outline is utterly trivial, simple and rather monotonous drudge-work to implement; the back-end inter-node distributed one is a hairy mash of protocols i've encountered, and needs some _serious_ thrashing. i started writing and couldn't stop - but it can hardly be called "an outline". whoops. TWiki

The change in direction for TWiki that resulted in a fork by its key contributors remains a notable event in the history of the TWiki project. I believe it is appropriate for this pivotal event to be mentioned briefly in the lead paragraph for the article. Isaac Lin (talk) 04:33, 2 October 2009 (UTC)

The change in governance alone is not particularly notable, except for the fact that it resulted in a change in the development community which is a challenge that TWiki has had to face (the cited CNET article talks about this challenge). The notability of Foswiki is a side issue; note even if it has not been deemed to have independent notability, it can remain notable within the context of the TWiki project. The Pioneercourthouse troll has been at it for 3 years now. Reducing the protection to a few weeks? You might as well remove protection right now, as he'll be on it the second the protection is lifted anyway. I strongly recommend you talk with some of the other admins that have worked on it recently, so you all can reach a consensus. →Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots 23:01, 3 October 2009 (UTC)

I just don't want to see this article get into some kind of "protection wars", which I'm sure would delight PCH no end. →Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots 23:19, 3 October 2009 (UTC)
You didn't see discussion because most of it has been off-wiki. I assure you, he's watching this right now, with great interest, to see what the next round of this endless game is. →Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots 23:29, 3 October 2009 (UTC)

Merry Columbus Day 2 all and 2 all a goodnite, beware of large windstorms bearing gifts

Greetings fellow WikiProject Oregon member, time to uncork a fine wine as it is once again time for the Collaboration of the Week. As always, thank you to those who helped out the last few weeks improving the Oregon Zoo, the Rasheed Wallace, Willamette Bridges, and the Vanport articles. This week we have by request Jim Paxson and Films shot in Oregon. The later can easily be improved just by adding some sources. As always, click here to opt out of these messages, or click here to make a suggestion for a future COTW. And with Halloween fast approaching, remember that pennies really suck as a “treat” and you can expect toilet paper and or eggs on your residence for your “trick”. Spain... on the road Again

With respect to Spain... on the road Again, I did not say that stubs are exempt from the sourcing guidelines. What I said was that currently there is nothing in the article that is not in the actual episode credits themselves. I.E. there is nothing yet in the article that needs a specific source. What information in the stub do you feel needs sourcing? —MJBurrage(TC) 07:55, 14 October 2009 (UTC)

The information you disagree with was taken from the Chicken article and others; why was it allowed there but not here? The how-to information can be cleaned up, but surely it is informative to talk about the food, maintenance and health of the pet chickens? Portillo (talk) 05:09, 17 October 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for explaining why you changed the word "butchered" back to "harvested." I guess you're more knowledgeable of turkey farmer lingo than I am. However, I think we should use the word butchered (or killed or slaughtered) because that's what they're doing. I checked Dictionary.com for the definition of "harvest" and the meaning you give is not there. So I think it's jargon used in the turkey industry, and I would like the article to be written in standard English. We could include the fact that the term "harvest" is used by turkey farmers. Would you agree to rewording it to say "Hens are killed (or "harvested" as turkey farmers say)..."? --DBlomgren (talk) 02:42, 23 October 2009 (UTC)

Did I forget to thank you? ..

Steven Walling ,Thank you for participating in my RfA, which passed nearly unanimously with 174 in support, 2 in opposition and 1 neutral votes. Special thanks goes to RegentsPark, Samir and John Carter for their kind nomination and support. I am truly honored by the trust and confidence that the community has placed in me. I thank you for your kind inputs and I will be sincerely looking at the reasons that people opposed me so I can improve in those areas ( including my english ;) ). If you ever need anything please feel free to ask me and I would be happy to help you :). Have a great day ! -- Tinu Cherian - 06:02, 28 October 2009 (UTC)

Chickens as pets

I noticed you removed the section I added on chickens as pets, for information related to feeding. This contained important information for people keeping chickens as pets. Quite obviously chickens need food and water and to omit a complete section on this simply because you believed it to be a 'how to guide' is heavy handed and inconsiderate. If it was felt that the section needed a revision then this could have been easily edited. How do you suggest the section be written, because the article as it stands is sadly lacking. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Monsterparty (talkcontribs) 09:02, 29 October 2009 (UTC)

Tax revolt in critical care at a hospital near you

Hello fellow WikiProject Oregon member, once again time for the Collaboration of the Week in the land of Oregon. As always, thank you to those who helped out the last few weeks improving List of films shot in Oregon and Jim Paxson. This week we have by request Oregon tax revolt and not by request, the annual Hospital creation drive. For the later, I have laid out some sources here, and the remaining red links are all over the state, so you can find one near you! As always, click here to opt out of these messages, or click here to make a suggestion for a future COTW. May the wind always be beneath your wings. Aboutmovies (talk) 08:27, 3 November 2009 (UTC)

It's sunny out, quick take a picture!

Greetings to WikiProject Oregon folks. It is time again for another installment of as the Collaboration Of The Week Turns. A big thank you to last time’s guest stars who worked on Oregon tax revolt‎ and creating hospital articles, we had 3 DYKs off the hospital articles createdd. This week is the star-studded affair of the Semi-annual Great Oregon Picture Drive, starring Steven Walling. You can go out and take a picture, browse through Commons for an existing one, or search for a free one on the Internet, and in some cases remove an old request (or even add a request to an article that has no images). See the bottom of this page for some links to a variety of free sources. Again, click here to opt out of these messages, or click here to make a suggestion for a future COTW. An editor has nominated one or more articles which you have created or worked on, for deletion. The nominated article is 2008 Barack Obama assassination scare in Denver. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also Wikipedia:Notability and "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion(s) by adding your comments to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/2008 Barack Obama assassination scare in Denver. Please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate.

Please note: This is an automatic notification by a bot. I have nothing to do with this article or the deletion nomination, and can't do anything about it. --Erwin85Bot (talk) 01:08, 6 December 2009 (UTC)

DYK for Ossabaw Island Hog

Updated DYK query On December 11, 2009, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Ossabaw Island Hog, which you created or substantially expanded. You are welcome to check how many hits your article got while on the front page (here's how) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

PayLess at Sprouse-Reitz for your G.I. Joe's, brought to you by Troutman's Emporium and Frederick & Nelson

Hello WikiProject Oregon member, and seasons greetings. Here at Collaboration Of The Week we thank you for your efforts making Oregon better, at least on Wikipedia, and hope you are doing better than Joe's. Or, in the eloquent words of some marketing manager for another now defunct Oregon chain, Merry Christmas from PayLess... Merry Chriiiistmaaaasssss!!!

Now that pleasantries have been exchanged, thank you to those who worked on the last two collaborations, the Semi-annual Great Oregon Picture Drive, and Oregon Country Fair and Geoff Petrie. For this edition of the COTW we have Gambling in Oregon and NRHP in Washington County. The hope for the later is to fill in the last few images (5) and then see if we can make it the first NRHP list in Oregon with an article for every entry (need 27). Question

I sort of volunteered to help improve an article on merino wool. I'd like to make some factual claims about its properties, and feel that I should cite references for these. Most of my knowledge on the subject comes from word of mouth from the hiking, cycling, and kayaking communities, some online reviews, and sources like that, which probably won't make good references. Is it acceptable to cite a manufacturer or retailer, for example, this article ( http://www.rei.com/expertadvice/articles/wool+clothing.html ) is much more detailed than I would expect, and backs up my anecdotal experience as well as that of the community. Must I seek out more academic sources to quote - ones I'm not currently familiar with? Can I assume it's better to add content to an article that needs it, even if I can't find references for some of the material, and hope somebody else will come along and add them?

Thanks for the advice.

Images in pixels

Don't be silly, of course images can be sized in pixels, if it were forbidden there would be no point in having the facility. Also the "lede" picture is usually larger than normal thumbnail, from WP:MOS:

  • Examples where adjusting the size may be appropriate include, but are not limited to, the following: ..... Lead images, which should usually be no wider than "upright=1.7" ("300px")

One last time for 2009

Happy New Year to you, you WikiProject Oregon member! Tis the season for one last Collaboration Of The Week to get started this year. Thank you to those who worked on Gambling in Oregon and NRHP in Washington County the last few weeks. For the final COTW of 2009, we have Archiving Article Talk Pages and Mr. Standard TV & Appliance, Bill Schonely. For the archiving, we have a lot of old, stale comments on article talk pages from before 2009 that should be archived away, so that new comments are not added to things that either were addressed or not worth addressing. Personally, I archive anything older than a year. Anyway, click here to opt out of these messages, or click here to make a suggestion for a future COTW. Adios.
