Happy New Year!
A wish for the new year | |
A quote from Gargantua and Pantagruel by Rabelais; it is taken from the manuscript of Jules Massenet's opera Panurge, in the composer's own hand. It is my greeting of choice for the new year, because it encourages us to live joyfully, and try not to take life too seriously...while quaffing whatever beverage we choose, naturally. This has been a challenging year, to say the least; I hope that 2021 may bring a fresh start, and better days ahead. May the new year bring you joy and peace...and many days of fruitful editing. |

Some things to update in species articles
Hi! There are a few common things that would be helpful to update in your process when creating articles about species:
- stubs should be placed at the bottom of the article with two blank lines between it and the rest of the content
- remember to remove the colon from the category links when you move them out of draft space - it should be
[[Category:Schefflera|stolleana]]
rather than[[:Category:Schefflera|stolleana]]
- italicize the species/genus names in references
- no need to link to major country names (see Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Linking#What generally should not be linked)
- you mention that a lot of plants are "perennial plants", but the references you listed in most cases haven't included that information. Some of them weren't actually perennial plants, so it might be better to default to "flowering plant" (when applicable)
- WikiProjects Plants recommends avoiding use of "a herbaceous" or "an herbaceous" due to back-and-forth conflicts; there are some recommendations here: Wikipedia:WikiProject_Plants#"A" or "an" with "herb..."
- in the speciesbox, use either
taxon=
ORgenus=
andspecies=
, not both - no need to ref bomb, like linking to herbarium specimens as references for the family the species is in, or to sources that mention the species only in passing. Additional references should add something meaningful to the article. For these plant species stubs you're making, it's probably fine to just use Plants of the World Online as your only source, since from the ones I've looked through, it looks like that's where you're getting the article content from
- on the Talk page, it's super helpful if you can add the full WikiProject Plants assessment, which for these stubs would, in almost all cases, be:
{{WikiProject Plants|class=stub|importance=low|needs-image=yes}}

- Can you look into implementing some of these updates before publishing so many more articles? I agree with Abductive that it'd be great to just edit in main article space rather than draft space, to avoid issues like this one and this one. —Hyperik ⌜talk⌟ 21:30, 30 August 2020 (UTC)

Could you remove the existing note about them being perennial plants in the Vernonia articles you published? That info isn't supported by the reference you provided. Thank you! —Hyperik ⌜talk⌟ 21:11, 27 September 2020 (UTC)
Hyperik, anything else I should work on? Starzoner (talk) 19:15, 28 September 2020 (UTC)
- Super! Thanks for those updates. There are still some of the Vernonia articles mentioning perennial. Sometimes POWO has that info but often it doesn't. List to check at List of Vernonia species. I also noticed some of the articles about Trigonopterus species have the same ref posted twice (the Riedel et al. 2019 one), e.g. at Trigonopterus artemis, though that was due to another editor. I started fixing a few of them, but there are a bunch remaining. —Hyperik ⌜talk⌟ 20:00, 28 September 2020 (UTC)
- The life cycles of Vernonia species in the articles you created are still largely unsourced. Could you take a look at the ones you added? Are there other taxa where you noted "perennial"? —Hyperik ⌜talk⌟ 19:36, 31 December 2020 (UTC)

Draft:Untitled Star Wars Anthology film
Hi Starzoner, I see you created and have been updating Draft:Untitled Star Wars Anthology film. Much of the detail in this draft concerns the planned Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi films that have since been cancelled, and those details are now at The Book of Boba Fett and Draft:Obi-Wan Kenobi (TV series), respectively. We shouldn't be keeping a draft that will not be moved to the mainspace, so I think this one should be deleted or redirected. I wanted to check to see if you thought there was a future for this or if you just wanted to move the details in this draft into your userspace? - adamstom97 (talk) 01:43, 3 January 2021 (UTC)

Subtaxa
Typically subspecies, varieties, etc, are covered in the species article unless the article becomes very long. "Very long" is defined at Wikipedia:Article size as "over 10,000 words". Having all the subtaxa described on the species page allows readers to compare and contrast the differences without having to jump from page to page. Here are couple of examples; Banksia ericifolia and Grevillea juniperina. Abductive (reasoning) 22:31, 5 January 2021 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Category:2021 American television episodes
A tag has been placed on Category:2021 American television episodes requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Liz Read! When adding lists of synonyms to taxoboxes, please don't use {{plainlist}}; rather use {{specieslist}}, which both correctly italicizes names, and adds the authority in smaller type. Example: Carex appendiculata. --Elmidae (talk · contribs) 23:36, 10 January 2021 (UTC)

Recent changes
- You can choose to be reminded when you have not added an edit summary. This can be done in your preferences. This could conflict with the CAPTCHA. This has now been fixed. [1]
- You can link to specific log entries. You can get these links for example by clicking the timestamps in the log. Until now, such links to private log entries showed no entry even if you had permission to view private log entries. The links now show the entry. [2]
- Admins can use the abuse filter tool to automatically prevent bad edits. Three changes happened last week:
- The filter editing interface now shows syntax errors while you type. This is similar to JavaScript pages. It also shows a warning for regular expressions that match the empty string. New warnings will be added later. [3]
- Oversighters can now hide multiple filter log entries at once using checkboxes on Special:AbuseLog. This is how the usual revision deletion works. [4]
- When a filter matches too many actions after it has been changed it is "throttled". The most powerful actions are disabled. This is to avoid many editors getting blocked when an administrator made a mistake. The administrator will now get a notification about this "throttle".
- There is a new tool to build new skins. You can also see existing skins. You can give feedback. [5]
- Bots using the API no longer watch pages automatically based on account preferences. Setting the
watchlist
towatch
will still work. This is to reduce the size of the watchlist data in the database. [6] - Scribunto's file metadata now includes length. [7]
- CSS and JavaScript code pages now have link anchors to line numbers. You can use wikilinks like w:en:MediaWiki:Common.js#L-50. [8]
- There was a new version of MediaWiki last week. You can read a detailed log of all 763 changes. Most of them are very small and will not affect you.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 12 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 13 January. It will be on all wikis from 14 January (calendar).

Using appropriate geographical categories
A large number of articles you've created are using obsolete geographical categories, i.e. categories not part of the World Geographical Scheme for Recording Plant Distributions. The WGSRPD is the accepted scheme for assigning geographical categories to plant articles. Obsolete categories in use in your articles include: Category:Flora of India, Category:Flora of Indonesia and Category:Flora of Malaysia. See the instructions at each of these specific category descriptions for a list of valid categories to reassign articles to and, in general, see the category guidance at Wikipedia:WikiProject Plants/World Geographical Scheme for Recording Plant Distributions.
The following articles should be revised to use the appropriate geographical categories:
Category:Flora of India:

- Declangi, I think I got them all. Starzoner (talk) 00:02, 12 January 2021 (UTC)
- I've looked at some of the above articles and while the categories now appear to be generally within the WGSRPD scheme, some issues remain:
- Begonia albococcinea and some other India species now use Category:Flora of Tamil Nadu. Such a specific category is not supported by the articles' sources. Category:Flora of India (region) may be a possibility but these articles should be checked against the source and the category description.
- Use of the term "endemic". The above articles (and likely others) should be checked for use of this term. A species cannot really be "endemic to Indonesia", it's a very large and diverse country. Nor can a species be endemic to multiple countries on different landmasses. Declangi (talk) 04:27, 14 January 2021 (UTC)
- I've looked at some of the above articles and while the categories now appear to be generally within the WGSRPD scheme, some issues remain:
Plant stub notability
To be transparent, when assessing the plant stubs that you've been creating, I've been searching for the scientific name on Google Scholar. If I get a fair amount of hits (>10 or so), I let it through without tags. If I get less than that but see a citation to Plants of the World or another reliable source, I tag it with {{notability}}. signed, Rosguill talk 20:46, 14 January 2021 (UTC)

Pleurothallis kaynagata moved to draftspace
An article you recently created, Pleurothallis kaynagata, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:
" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Problems
- IPv6 addresses were written in lowercase letters in diffs. This caused dead links since Special:Contributions only accepted uppercase letters for the IPs. This has been fixed. [13]
Changes later this week
- You can soon use Wikidata to link to pages on the multilingual Wikisource. [14]
- Often editors use a "non-breaking space" to make a gap between two items when reading but still show them together. This can be used to avoid a line break. You will now be able to add new ones via the special character tool in the 2010, 2017, and visual editors. The character will be shown in the visual editor as a space with a grey background. [15][16]
- Wikis use abuse filters to stop bad edits being made. Filter maintainers can now use syntax like
1.2.3.4 - 1.2.3.55
as well as the1.2.3.4/27
syntax for IP ranges. [17] - The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 2 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 3 February. It will be on all wikis from 4 February (calendar).
Future changes
- Minerva is the skin Wikimedia wikis use for mobile traffic. When a page is protected and you can't edit it you can normally read the source wikicode. This doesn't work on Minerva on mobile devices. This is being fixed. Some text might overlap. This is because your community needs to update MediaWiki:Protectedpagetext to work on mobile. You can read more. [18][19]
- Cloud VPS and Toolforge will change the IP address they use to contact the wikis. The new IP address will be
185.15.56.1
. This will happen on February 8. You can read more.

Little Town
The Collider article wrote "Menken calls it The Little Town, but we’ve confirmed that it’s simply Little Town."
The title is from the lyrics to "Belle," where she sings "Little town It's a quiet village Every day Like the one before Little town Full of little people Waking up to say."
Or the article title could be called "Beauty and the Beast: The Prequel Series" since that is Disney's official working title from their investor day. [20] --DrBat (talk) 18:51, 4 February 2021 (UTC)
- The variety source is much better as a solid source, and it quotes directly from Alan Menken, who said "the Little Town". What you are doing is more Fan cruft. ALso, why did you move the page that title? Do you have a source for that? Starzoner (talk) 20:04, 4 February 2021 (UTC)

Why did you draft the page? The article had all of the pertinent information currently available, and is of a notable subject with sufficient sources attached. Doomhiker (talk) 01:44, 6 February 2021 (UTC)
- sorry it felt like it was a bit premature and probably needs a bit more info. It probably needs more info that it is *currently* in production. Starzoner (talk) 01:46, 6 February 2021 (UTC)
- There's literally no more info to add. If you think that there is info yet to be added, please give sources first. It's not premature either - the show was formally, officially announced an widely reported, thus deserving a page. Moving it back to mainspace. Doomhiker (talk) 01:48, 6 February 2021 (UTC)
- ok. Doomhiker. I'm sorry. Starzoner (talk) 01:49, 6 February 2021 (UTC)
- Doomhiker, the move to draftspace was valid. Per WP:TV consensus, the show needs to actually be in production to have a live article; an official order is not enough. -- /Alex/21 00:53, 7 February 2021 (UTC)
- And nothing in the sources listed stated that the show wasn't already in production: we got an official announcement and nothing says that production hasn't already started. Doomhiker (talk) 16:23, 7 February 2021 (UTC)
- Nothing in the sources states that the series is in production. It is the onus of the editor to prove what has started, and not what has not. An official announcement does not mean production has begun; that would be classified as OR and/or SYNTH. -- /Alex/21 00:12, 8 February 2021 (UTC)

Changes later this week
- You can see edits to chosen pages on Special:Watchlist. You can add pages to your watchlist on every wiki you like. The GlobalWatchlist extension will come to Meta on 11 February. There you can see entries on watched pages on different wikis on the same page. The new watchlist will be found on Special:GlobalWatchlist on Meta. You can choose which wikis to watch and other preferences on Special:GlobalWatchlistSettings on Meta. You can watch up to five wikis. [24]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 9 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 10 February. It will be on all wikis from 11 February (calendar).
Future changes
- When admins protect pages the form will use the OOUI look. Special:Import will also get the new look. This will make them easier to use on mobile phones. [25][26]
- Some services will not work for a short period of time from 07:00 UTC on 17 February. There might be problems with new short links, new translations, new notifications, adding new items to your reading lists or recording email bounces. This is because of database maintenance. [27]
- Last week Tech News reported that the IP address Cloud VPS and Toolforge use to contact the wikis will change on 8 February. This is delayed. It will happen later instead. [28]

On redundant sources and reversions
Hi. This is the second time it happens, and you seem to get upset, then realize that the sources are indeed redundant and remove them yourself. Before, I thought that you were just upset that the sources were being removed, but this is the second time that you revert me before reverting yourself, once you've apparently realized you were wrong. Now, this plus your edit summary that says we do not need to constantly hit revert
makes me think that what you don't like is being reverted. Here you considered my reversion aggressive
when all I did—which is all required to do—is state the reason behind it in the edit summary. Immediately after reverting to your original edit, without stating your reason why you thought the sources should stay, you reinstated my reversion, but apparently did it manually, which is exactly the same thing you did this time. Now why is that? Is it because an edit reverted appears in your edit count? Is it something you do every time you get reverted, or just in these two cases? Reversion is part of the process of Wikipedia editing, it's just an easy way to fix a mistake, be it one's own mistake or someone else's. If you make enough edits, at one point you're going to make mistakes, and those mistakes are going to get corrected by someone, more often than not using the reversion tool. It honestly suprises me that, having been editing regularly since November 2019 and having made no less than 138,260 edits, you haven't already got used to being reverted. I certainly have and I've made ten percent of your edits having been here like five times longer you. I'm constantly reverting other users, and I'm almost as constantly being reverted. There are no hard feelings behind it, as long as there's a reason for them. —El Millo (talk) 22:57, 11 February 2021 (UTC)
Last try
Okay, you clearly seem to be having a problem either with me or with something else that is making you react like this. Whenever you want to talk about this, you're invited to my talk page to discuss it. —El Millo (talk) 01:55, 12 February 2021 (UTC)
- what do you want? simply put, I don't to constantly see people reverting me for little to no reason. I've been reverted multiple times by multiple people for the most random reasons other than they want it that way, and I'm really tired of it. Starzoner (talk) 02:04, 12 February 2021 (UTC)
- There was a reason, and it was a reason you agreed with, as you did exactly the same thing as I did only minutes later, both times. There's no difference between reverting someone and just manually undoing what they did except for the inconvenience of the latter. It seems you're getting angry at me for things other people did. Some editors do revert edits just because, and I've seen it happen, but that's not what I did in any of these two cases. Lastly, if you considered my first reversion "aggressive", I don't know what you'd call removing a perfectly civil message from your talk page twice, and reverting someone with no reason given, which is what you did, both times, before showing that you actually agreed with the reason I had given you, just that you didn't like that it was a reversion. Honestly, there's nothing wrong about being reverted, you know? —El Millo (talk) 02:10, 12 February 2021 (UTC)
ok: I'm sorry. I"m getting worked up over this. Starzoner (talk) 02:11, 12 February 2021 (UTC)
- Apologies accepted, and keep up the good work. —El Millo (talk) 02:12, 12 February 2021 (UTC)
