Welcome!

Hi, and welcome to the India WikiProject! We're a group of editors working to improve Wikipedia's coverage of India.

A few features that you might find helpful:

There are a variety of interesting things to do within the project; you're free to participate however much—or little—you like:

  • Want to know how good our articles are? The assessment department is working on rating the quality of every India article in Wikipedia.
  • Can you code? The automation department uses automated and semi-automated methods to perform batch tasks that would be tedious to do manually.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask another fellow member, and we'll be happy to help you. Again, welcome! We look forward to seeing you around! Ganeshk (talk) 04:15, 12 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Srini, Some India-related links for you. I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have.

Your concern

[edit]

Hello! While it's true that you can't create articles out of thin air, nor can you cut and paste directly from other sources. That's why it was cut and quickly. However, the new version looks great. - Lucky 6.9 07:36, 15 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Gotta start somewhere. :)) I had lots of stuff cut, chopped, diced and sliced when I first started. You're already getting the hang of it by the looks of the new version of your article! Very late on my side of the planet, so I'll say good night. Feel free to drop by my talk page or e-mail if you have any questions or concerns. Here to help you. - Lucky 6.9 08:12, 15 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ganeshbot articles

[edit]

Srini, Thanks for helping out with the bot merge work. I checked your last merge. Looks great. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 04:07, 21 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Great! You can adopt the Uttarachal state if you want. Not sure whether you are using category starting with U, so linked it for you. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 04:18, 21 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Oh yes, I will do so now. ~ srini 04:26, 21 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you so much for your contribution to the Ixora article! The pictures are so lovely. The article was needing some pizzazz! :) Ink Pudding 04:10, 27 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dehradun

[edit]

Currenly we are using 2001 census data across all cities. When they publish the next census information, we can change to the new data. I think 1,025,680 is district level population. 447,808 in the bot sandbox is the correct value for the city. -- Ganeshk (talk) 16:55, 29 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

And great job completing Uttaranchal state. Just curious, how did you find the Not created page since I had not written you about it. Looking forward to your adoption of another state. :) Thanks, Ganeshk (talk)

Mariamman temple

[edit]

I was intending to discuss the generic featurs of a mariamman temple in that article. That includes "Thee midhi", "Thee Chatti", "Samiyattam", the importance of yantras, and the importance of various other features of a Mariamman temple as distinguished from a traditional Hindu temple. So, I would like to revert to the previous version.

See the current Samayapuram article. I've cleaned up most of the stuff, and added the citations.

  • Cartography Department (Shortcut:WP:INMAP): The Department of Cartography within the WikiProject India is a group of wikipedians who work on providing quality maps related to India. Their contributions gain more significance as we try to provide more information on places, districts and states of India. As a thumb rule, maps serve better if they are in SVG format. The location maps by the cartography department has helped us include location information based on latitudes and longitudes for a give place within India. The Indian Roadways map is a featured image, one amongst the few best road maps in the world. Still, there is more work to be done. There are 604 districts in India (see List of districts of India), and each district page needs a map of that district. You can help too. Contact the Cartography Department to learn how you can help in making the best maps in Wikipedia to be India-related!

vivekananda at wikisource..

[edit]

thanks :), currently i have a program which will auto create the wiki files with the headers/footers, by parsing the html files i have I am working on auto page creation...once this is done the book will get over very soon :) in a matter of days, the problem with www.ramakrishnavivekananda.info is that web spiders cannot index it (check the meta info of the html pages) and it has been obfuscated in such a way that the web browser need javascript and u cannot copy the contents... I think adding the book to wikisource will solve all these problems .. Hopefully I can complete the book within 1-2 months, every weekend I am adding whatever I can... --vineeth 06:46, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for adding the sanskrit equivalent text, well... belive it or not, I wanted someone to start doing this and you started it

. Thanks a lot. Still around 8% of the text needs to be completed, and I feel it will be done in another 1 month or so, I have a tool which will format and add the text automatically, you need not take the pain of manually adding them , meanwhile pls continue adding the sanskrit text. Thanks again. --vineeth 18:10, 6 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Another thing, pls be careful while removing the br tags, because in poems they are required. --vineeth 18:12, 6 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Badrinathpuri

[edit]

I'm not exactly sure whether Badrinath and Badrinathpuri are exactly the same. In the census statistics only one of them is there, and after googling I found out that they both are in that tiny Chamoli district and then they both are never written separately in any of the articles. So, I believe that some authors use Badrinath and others use Badrinathpuri to refer to the same thing. I put the merge request, so that someone more knowledgable about Uttaranchal could see it and verify whether my assertion is correct. If they are the same, they have to be merged, else there has to be dissambiguation page so that it confuses no more people. Balajiviswanathan 18:34, 14 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Project News
  • Name change of cities in Karnataka: A straw poll was conducted on the proposal to change the name of cities in Karnataka, per the Nov 1, 2006 decision by the Karnataka government to rename them from the current anglicised forms. The result of the poll was to change the names. As controversial as the decision may be in the real world, the article Bangalore in Wikipedia still reflects the old name. You may be interested in knowing why. Dig the archives.
  • New Project Noticeboard (Shortcut:WP:INB): WikiProject India now sports a new colourful centralised noticeboard. An effort to make the noticeboard current and dynamic was mooted a few days back, and Ganeshk came up with the new format. The new noticeboard will strive to be the one-stop shop for all project related information. The shortcut is WP:INB.
  • Members List: The old members list is being phased out to give way for the new members list. New members are requested to add their names to the new members list. As the newsletter grows, further issues of the Project Newsletter will be delivered to those enlisted in the new list. So dash down now, to check if ur name is in there.

  • Welcome to the December 2006 edition of our newsletter. Time flies past like matter into the black hole. It is interesting to notice that we are already into the last month for the year of 2006. 2006 saw discussions and development beyond realisation. In the world of Wikipedia where quality counts than quantity, we have come a long way. We've made better than 'nothing', to say the least, and even that is an achievement. I take this opportunity to thank everyone including those who have dotted the i's and crossed the t's.

  • How to?: The "how to" part of assessment is very simple. Just head on to the talk page of any India related page and you'll find the {{WP India}} template. Simply classify the article based on the content and the criteria mentioned here. You can find the detailed instructions here. If you think it may qualify for GA/FA status, first consider submitting the article for peer review.

Project News
  • Project tagging:After a brief edit war over the addition of {{WP India}} to ancient archaeological sites now located in Pakistan, a "pre" parameter was introduced to remove the ROI flag from the template for pre-1947 articles, following discussion. After another large discussion on ANI alleging that the automated tagging by Ganeshbot and LostBot was "nationalistic", Ganeshbot was briefly blocked. Currently, the bots are again in action.
  • Swastika on Hinduism templates:Recently, an extremely large and at times emotional debate broke out regarding the use of the swastika on Hinduism templates, given its association with Nazism. As a result, {{Hindu Links}} now contains an educational message about the use of the swastika, as discussion on a more permanent resolution continues.

Project News
  • Jimbo's visit to India and the WikiCamp in Chennai: Jimbo recently visited India in late February and early March on wiki work. This included a trip to a WikiCamp in Chennai. The one day conference attracted 300 participants from across India and beyond dealt with issues facing wikis ([1]). It was widely covered by the press, eg The Hindu( [2]), which cited the efforts of Bhadani (edit count), Sundar (leadership on Tamil Wikipedia) and Ganeshk (Creation of Ganeshbot to create articles on Indian towns from census figures). Ganeshk himself travelled from California to attend the conference.
  • Wikipedia Weekly 15: Wikipedia Weekly, a informal Wikipedians' program that purports to give "A weekly audio roundup of Wikipedia happenings with news, interviews and roundtable discussions" recently interviewed two prominent editors Rama's Arrow and Ragib(listen). The entire 34 minute interview was entirely about the world of Indian subcontinent wiki-happenings, and was the first episode which was not entirely dominated by discussion of wiki-politics and wiki-bureaucracy, with the host Witty lama praising the efficiency of the project and its proliferation of featured content. Rama's Arrow cited the team spirit, friendship and respect among project members in discussing its success and FA productivity, as well as discussing subcontinental wiki-conflict. Ragib talked also of his public campaign to raise awareness of the Bengali Wikipedia in his native Bangladesh, which has seen a 30-fold increase in article count over the past year.

An editor has nominated one or more articles which you have created or worked on, for deletion. The nominated article is Jaggi Vasudev. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also Wikipedia:Notability and "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion(s) by adding your comments to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Jaggi Vasudev. Please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate.

WikiProject India Tag & Assess 2012 Contest

[edit]

Hello friends, we are a number of editors from WikiProject India have got together to assess the many thousands of articles under the stewardship of the project, and we'd love to have you, a fellow member, join us. These articles require assessment, that is, the addition of a WikiProject template to the talk page of an article, assessing it for quality and importance and adding a few extra parameters to it.

As of March 11, 2012, 07:00 UTC, WikiProject India has 95,998 articles under its stewardship. Of these 13,980 articles are completely unassessed (both for class and importance) and another 42,415 articles are unassessed for importance only. Accordingly, a Tag & Assess 2012 drive-cum-contest has begun from March 01, 2012 to last till May 31, 2012.

If you are new to assessment, you can learn the minimum about how to evaluate from Part One of the Assessment Guide. Part Two of the Guide will help you learn to employ the full functionality of the talk page template, should you choose to do so.

You can sign up on the Tag & Assess page. There are a number of awards to be given in recognition of your efforts. Come & join us to take part in this exciting new venture. You'll learn more about India in this way.

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on TI Cycles of India requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about an organization or company, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, you can place a request here. SFK2 (talk) 06:16, 29 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on DD Free Dish requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article or image appears to be a clear copyright infringement. This article or image appears to be a direct copy from http://www.newindianexpress.com/nation/article541666.ece. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
