Re:Status

I don't know anything about scripts and I'm having trouble with Firefox 3 at the moment. (Crashes every time I download something and is caused by Data Execution Prevention on Vista SP1), so I don't want to do anything that might make it worse. I've joined the Mozilla Forum on this topic at - Random Firefox 3 Crashes- Data Execution Prevention under the Username of romana 3. With most users FF 3 is unusable. Kathleen.wright5 13:55, 2 July 2008 (UTC)

I've found the answer:Uninstall CyberdefenderFree 2 and install AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 8.0.135. Kathleen.wright5 10:03, 3 July 2008 (UTC)

So it isn't "Hussam"?

Why did you revert it? I don't see a citation on the "Jabr" name. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.181.138.231 (talk) 21:11, 2 July 2008 (UTC)

Colonialism

(From user page)

Howdy, don't consider this vandalism, but a means of contacting you. I made a few minor changes in Colonialism. Two of which correct blatent historical errors, not subjective "facts" , but factual events that are not in dispute. One one which was the claim that the US was involved in occupying Vietnam during WW II. That is like the humorous pep speech line from Animal House in which the John Belushi's character talks about Germany Bombing Pearl Harbor(which everyone knows was a Japanese Military attack, not German). American soldiers were never in French Indo China (Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia) during the Second World War(1939-1945), a fact which I cannot find disputed by anywhere or anyone, even the popular World War II revisionist Pat Buchannan. French Indo-China was occupied by the Japanese Imperial Army until Japan's surrender on August 15, 1945. I understand that the colonialism section is up for ideological dispute depending on where you are from and your political views, but it does a diservice to the section to have simple factual inaccuracies like the idea that America somehow was involved in Vietnam in the Second World War. American troops, then called "advisers" were not in Vietnam until 1955 after the French defeat at Dien Bien Phu(1954). If the article intends to talk about the Vietnam War, then please change it to suit that idea. I can understand that someone may argue the American-Vietnam War and American Occupation of Vietnam began in 1955, 1963 or 1965, but no one argues that it began in the Second World War. I don't want to sound haughty, but I have a degree in History, and feel that Wikipedia usually is pretty good about history, but in some instances, including the example I have given lacks the simple factual check that would be required to correct simple inaccuracies.

Thanks

Benjamin

WP:HAU, Status, and you!

As you may know, the StatusBot responsible for maintaining the status of the Highly Active Users was taken offline. We now have a replacement in the Qui status system. This semi-automatic system will allow you to easily update your status page found at Special:Mypage/Status which the HAU page code is now designed to read from. If you are already using Qui (or a compatible system) - great! - no action is needed (other than remembering to update your status as necessary). If not, consider installing Qui. You can also manually update this status by changing the page text to online, offline, or busy. While it is not mandatory, the nature of HAU is that people are often seeking a quick answer from someone who is online and keeping our statuses up-to-date will assist with this. Note if you were previously using your /Status page as something other than a one-word status indicator, your HAU entry may have been set to "status=n" to correct display issues. Please clear this parameter if you change things to be "HAU compatible". Further questions can be raised at WT:HAU. This message was delivered by xenobot 22:59, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

Removed stories from the Current Events page

Hi. User talk:87.198.133.62 has been removing the story about the alleged abuses at the Cook County Jail at Portal:Current events/2008 July 18 saying it's "regional" news and that there's a rule against it. He's done it three times now and I put a vandalism tag on his talk page (which he then removed) and then left a message on my talk page telling me not to threaten him. I noticed that you've dealt with this problem before. Any suggestions? (P.S. we don't actually have rule against "regional" news in the current events section do we?)--Cdogsimmons (talk) 14:55, 20 July 2008 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:GreenlakeShaker-crop.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:GreenlakeShaker-crop.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:16, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

Congratulations. Here are what pass for words of wisdom from the puppy:
  1. Remember you will always protect the wrong version.
  2. Remember you must always follow the rules, except for when you ignore them. You will always pick the wrong one to do. (See #5)
  3. Remember to assume good faith and not bite. Remember that when you are applying these principles most diligently, you are probably dealing with a troll.
  4. Use the block ability sparingly. Enjoy the insults you receive when you do block.
  5. Remember when you make these errors, someone will be more than happy to point them out to you in dazzling clarity and descriptive terminology.
  6. and finally, Remember to contact me if you ever need assistance, and I will do what I am able.

Ferritin values in image

Good thing you have additional values for ferritin to Reference ranges for blood tests. If you add the values to the article, with the reference, then it can be included in the next update of the image. Mikael Häggström (talk) 06:02, 31 October 2008 (UTC)

Asherman's syndrome page vandalism

Hi Spencer, you recently noted that recent changes to the Asherman's syndrome page blocked content-for example, the entire reference list of 31 credible references was removed by a user who's IP address I traced to Korea. I have re-added the reference list and will check to see that the other changes were not also serious. The page was assessed as 'start' level which I think is unfair and due to the references having been removed. It seems that the vandalism was deliberate to lower the credibility of the page. I am requesting that it be re-assessed with all references. Floranerolia (talk) 01:27, 5 November 2008 (UTC)

"awards" for in the news articles

Hey Spenc, if I can make a suggestion: when handing out these "awards" please talk a look at the "Revision history statistics" of the new article. You should then make an arbitrary decision regarding the which one of the top contributors should get the "award" besides for the creator. At times, the creator just created the article and it was other editors that put hard work and effort into making the article main page-worthy. Once you're handing out this "awards" you might as well give it to the top contributors as well. It's just a few simple edits and it creates lots of goodwill. Best, --brewcrewer (yada, yada) 04:18, 16 January 2009 (UTC)

Thanks Spenc. Although I has ulterior motives (my little award), I still think it's generally a positive idea to give to the ITN to the top contributors. Thanks for going out of your way with all the notices. Best, --brewcrewer (yada, yada) 03:26, 18 January 2009 (UTC)
Thanks. Do you by any chance know it ITN's can be added to the iconstatis? That's the little symbols at the top of my user page. --brewcrewer (yada, yada) 03:34, 18 January 2009 (UTC)
Thanks a LOT!--brewcrewer (yada, yada) 04:36, 18 January 2009 (UTC)

Yes, three kids now. Oh dear. :( --➨♀♂Candlewicke ST # :) 15:59, 23 January 2009 (UTC)

  • Can you alter the Main Page to three? The reports of four appear to be misplaced and the German language source has revised the death toll to three now as well. We don't appear to have anything definite on four deaths anymore. --➨♀♂Candlewicke ST # :) 16:55, 23 January 2009 (UTC)
Probably the best move and should cover any future ups and downs too. --➨♀♂Candlewicke ST # :) 16:58, 23 January 2009 (UTC)

Just a cc regarding the Blagojevich ITN

Copied from my talk page, no response required

Hey folks, since there's two users in this talk I'll just thread this here. I promoted it to ITN on the reasoning that the removal of a state executive is, IMO, notable whether the subject himself is or not (though I'd figure it is inherent). Seemed obvious to me that this was more than Wikinews, which is why I skipped the discussion phase.

As to the portal, thanks for letting me know, I was not aware of the duplication being needed in the editing, I thought it was transcluded. Learn something new every day ;)

And lastly, I still think that it should be on the main page. While I can understand Spencer's logic in that it needs more information to make it encyclopedic and not just news, I personally don't think that anymore should or could be added to the article on the Blagojevich scandal at the time and it is a pretty descriptive article.

No matter it all, thanks for the input and the learning opportunity from all three. Keegantalk 06:12, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

Fire death increase

The article on the Kenyan supermarket fire is now at odds with the Main Page. The deaths appear to have increased from 14 to 25. I'm afraid I can't change it though. --➨♀♂Candlewicke ST # :) 23:16, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

ITN continental breakdown

Congratulations, you seem to have been the user who posted the mosted ITNs in January 2009. I've added a continental breakdown which in my opinion suggests a few more African ITNs are needed and a whopping lot of South American ITNs! By my estimation you've posted the sole, single, lonely, only, isolated South American ITN in January! --➨♀♂Candlewicke ST # :) 05:42, 1 February 2009 (UTC)

And if you happen to be reading this and the Kenyan oil spill ignition still reads as "over 50", it should now say "at least 111". Thanks. --➨♀♂Candlewicke ST # :) 09:36, 1 February 2009 (UTC)

I just declined the "vandalism" speedy for one of his articles. Didn't see the whole story. All of the "northern" cyprus articles/pages/etc. were created as an act of vandalism? Or was it just some crazy political thing that I know nothing about but some group of people cares a lot about? Should I just go through the bunch and delete them? Basically looking for some context here, because none of those look like blatant vandalism. Protonk (talk) 23:07, 7 February 2009 (UTC)

Germany general map.png

Hello! Technically it's possible to create a SVG version of that map but that leads to some cartographic consequences. The fonts are a big problem. If I offer SVG it would be impossible to use the font that I chose for that map. Not every font is suitable for maps and they massively affect the way a map looks like. The fonts I could use for SVG differ much from that one in this map. So in the end the map will look quite differently. Talking about it at WP:FPC means something different than talking about the PNG version. It's a decision about what you prefer: a translatable map or a map with a better graphic design. Additionally SVG is shown incorrectly in WP (if at all, problems with older browsers) so in most cases PNG versions are used in articles. The SVG version should be used for translations only until there is a better technical support for it.
I'm too busy in rl right now to create it if SVG is really wanted. This will have to wait some weeks. --NNW (talk) 16:17, 10 February 2009 (UTC)
