Many thanks for the good photograph you have added. Strictly speaking, see CoI, but verb. sap! Anyway, I hope you are happy with the article. Let me know if there is anything you think should be corrected. Moonraker (talk) 19:59, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Simon, you don’t have to use the drafting and approval system. If you can manage it, you can just jump in and start an article; but it seems to be a good way to start, as you don’t have the knack of inline citations yet, and without them you will be in hot water. If I were you, I should add them to your draft before anyone reviews it.

It works like this: put your planned footnote at a suitable point in tags like this: <ref>Rumpole, H. ''The Penge Bungalow Murders'' (Torquay: Radical Criminology Circle, 1969), p. 123</ref> and at the bottom of the page a {{reflist}} under your Notes or References heading. You can also name a footnote like this <ref name=HR>Rumpole, H. ''The Penge Bungalow Murders'' (Torquay: Radical Criminology Circle, 1969), p. 69</ref> and use it again by adding somewhere else <ref name=HR/>. (I am using <nowiki> tags so that you can read the text to be added and it doesn’t vanish into a footnote.) That will turn out like this:

The unfortunate arrest of the chief constable was not long delayed.[1]

See if you can work this in to your draft. Moonraker (talk) 18:12, 1 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

This may be more useful, see Help:Referencing for beginners. Your draft article looks very good, but it will not get through that approval system without inline citations. Kind regards, Moonraker (talk) 22:43, 1 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Looking very good. I have done a little formatting. The references are enough for Wikipedia:Notability, but before you go live with this I should aim to add at least one citation per paragraph, preferably at or near the end, to cover as much as possible of the para. No doubt you could manage one or more for the presidents, perhaps you have one for all of them which could go at the top after a short sentence? And someone may challenge the long list of lecturers if not referenced. Please alert me when live, if you are happy I may be able to nominate this for the “Did you know?” column of the Main Page. Moonraker (talk) 07:35, 6 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I just do not have much confidence in that approval process. Please see for instance a meeting with it here. If I were you, I should copy and paste your draft into a new user page such as User:Simon Edwards Esq/HLSI, add some categories found from a page such as Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution, and then move it (that means rename it, the move option is in the drop-down list under “More”) as Highgate Literary and Scientific Institution. Moonraker (talk) 12:59, 6 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Highgate Literary and Scientific Institution

[edit]

Thanks again for the advice - now live as per your suggestion (on Move I changed the name and on the left drop down menu changed it to Article).

One last question: I would like it to be searchable under HLSI as well as its full name - how do I do that? - or perhaps you could add it and I'll see how it is done.

I think this will do the trick. I have created a redirect from HLSI to Highgate Literary and Scientific Institution. Moonraker (talk) 22:10, 6 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Looking very good. I am almost sure the Guild of Apothecaries mentioned is the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries, you may have time to fathom that. Are you happy for me to work some more on it tomorrow and nominate it, as before? Moonraker (talk) 20:54, 19 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I hope my rewriting is not vexing you. The reviewer was complaining here about some supposedly copyrighted text from the Survey of London. If Philip Norman is the writer, he has been dead a long time, but it is a hoop they like us to jump through. Moonraker (talk) 13:58, 4 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The reviewer was raising this DYK rule

“Check that the article does not contain plagiarism or close paraphrasing. The Earwig tool can be helpful for this.”

I could have quibbled that the Survey of London is out of copyright, but I like an easy life and it did not take long to roll with the punch. He is happy now, so problem solved.
You are right, we launch a new page and it takes on a life of its own. Moonraker (talk) 17:54, 4 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I added the picture with a view to nominating the article for the main page DYK column, with a “hook” something like this. Might be neat to get a picture of the Queen there from a little while back. What do you think? Moonraker (talk) 03:35, 11 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Simon: What you've said on my page re: this may indeed be true, but the source says "The new building was originally called the Princess Elizabeth Hostel and was opened by its namesake (the wife of George VI and mother of Elizabeth II) in 1930." (bolding mine) So you'll need to find another source that indicates clearly that it was named for the child and not the mother, because this source doesn't show that. Belt

Worth a go! W. J. Belt Esq. was called from Lincoln’s Inn in 1861, had an interest in Biblical Archaeology and died in 1891 while a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. This death notice connects him with this slim volume and another from the same publisher in Latin verse. He seems to have taken to the bottle after the death of his wife Sibella Marianne Garratt in 1878. There’s a good little article in the St James's Gazette of Wednesday 23 June 1886 headed “A BARRISTER AND HIS AIR-GUN” about one of his appearances before the beak. Control copyright icon Hello Simon Edwards Esq! While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.

  • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
  • We have strict guidelines on the usage of copyrighted images. Fair use images must meet all ten of the non-free content criteria in order to be used in articles, or they will be deleted. All other images must be made available under a free and open license that allows commercial and derivative reuse to be used on Wikipedia.
  • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Such a release must be done in a verifiable manner, so that the authority of the person purporting to release the copyright is evidenced. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps in Wikipedia:Translation#How to translate. See also Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. James Lethbridge moved to draftspace

[edit]

An article you recently created, James Lethbridge, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Henry Lee (Surgeon) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appears to be a direct copy from https://livesonline.rcseng.ac.uk/client/en_GB/lives/search/detailnonmodal/ent:$002f$002fSD_ASSET$002f0$002fSD_ASSET:374685/ada?h=8&ic=true&isd=true. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Simon Edwards Esq, this looks harsh at first sight, but I think it may be really about notability, viz. there is not a lot there in the way of reliable secondary sources. In a case like this, someone usually just proposes the article for deletion, so this is a bit gentler. Moonraker (talk) 23:53, 12 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. When you add a new fact to Wikipedia, such as the name of the cemetery that a person is buried in, please add a citation to a WP:Reliable source that verifies the statement. See WP:V. Thanks! -- Ssilvers (talk) 21:27, 30 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ssilvers, thanks for your request that when I state my source when I state someone is buried in a particular cemetery. I do always show my sources if I add to Wikipedia, with the exception of Highgate Cemetery where I work as a volunteer. If I say on Wikipedia that someone is buried in Highgate Cemetery it is because I have checked the Cemetery's records and have either photographed the grave and headstone, or have definately established that they were (or were not) buried at Highgate. On some occasions I have found that Wikipedia says that someone is buried at Highgate when there is no confirmation in the Cememtery records and if there is no other evidence then I remove that reference from Wikipedia and make a note in the Wikipedia edit description. Unfortunately Wikipedia does not have a way of recording a personal visit to an archive or gravestone - it must assume that all research is done online. Cheers Simon Furnival (talk) 11:18, 1 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
For Highgate, please at least cite the cemetery record, including the page number. See WP:OR. It would be much better to cite a published source, however. It need NOT be online, just published in a WP:Reliable source. Also, please note that the location within the cemetery where the grave is located is not encyclopedic information. See WP:BALASP -- Ssilvers (talk) 18:34, 1 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Ssilvers, Highgate Cemetery records are very old fashioned. The original paper records are not available to reseachers, but they have been digitised and are available to staff and volunteers only. You can either search by the grave number or by the persons name, which is why I have added the grave number to Wikipedia. I'm not sure what else I can do. There is no page number in the digital files. What better source for the fact that a particular person is buried in Highgate Cemetery than the Cemetery records? I do agree that the location within the Cemetery is not encyclopedic information and I will not include that in future.Furnival (talk) 12:08, 2 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Why doesn't the cemetery make the list of persons buried there available online? I see a link on its website to https://www.deceasedonline.com -- Does that have a complete list? If so, you could cite that on Wikipedia -- Ssilvers (talk) 19:21, 2 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

St Pancras Female Orphanage

[edit]

Information icon Thanks for contributing to the article St Pancras Female Orphanage. However, one of Wikipedia's core policies is that contributions must be verifiable through reliable sources, preferably using inline citations. Please help by adding more sources to the article you edited, and/or by clarifying how the sources already given support the claims (see here for how to do inline referencing). If you need further help, you can look at Help:Contents/Editing Wikipedia, or ask at the Teahouse, or just ask me. Thank you. Dormskirk (talk) 18:34, 10 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

It is disappointing that you have removed my addition to this article without first asking me. I work in the archive of the HLSI where the archives of the St Pancras Orphanage are kept. We get regular inquiries from people who want to find out more about their female relatives. Many of these people only found out that we had the archive of the orphanage after much effort. This is where Wikipedia could have really helped. Such a shame. Furnival (talk) 11:51, 11 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - I am encouraging you to retore it. Please do so...with an appropriate citation. Thank you. Dormskirk (talk) 12:33, 11 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I work in the archive and physically handle the material - please advise what citation will satisfy youFurnival (talk) 12:45, 11 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - I have done this for you. Best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 12:48, 11 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks - I hadn't thought of Archives Hub as a citation, best wishesFurnival (talk) 12:51, 11 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
