Request for comment
Hello there, a proposal regarding pre-adminship review has been raised at Village pump by Anna Frodesiak. Your comments here is very much appreciated. Many thanks. Jim Carter through MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 06:46, 28 May 2014 (UTC)
DYKUpdateBot appears to be down
The bot should have updated the main page at 02:45 UTC, and it's over two hours after that. There's no error, and the bot hasn't done any edit since the previous update on the 29th. DYKHousekeepingBot, however, seems to be working just fine. BlueMoonset (talk) 04:58, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
- Looks like this was a one-off. Materialscientist did a manual update for Queue 5 at 05:33; the bot reawakened and processed next queue at 17:23, and appears ready to do the next one at 05:08 on the 31st. Glad it reset on its own. BlueMoonset (talk) 21:14, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks for keeping an eye on this. Looks like a connectivity issue. Once I move DYKUpdateBot over to Labs (soon), we should see fewer connectivity problems. Shubinator (talk) 06:50, 4 June 2014 (UTC)
Now it's DYKHousekeepingBot that's hors de combat: last update was at 21:10, 9 June 2014 (UTC), a good nine hours ago. Can you give it a little encouragement to wake up? Many thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 06:12, 10 June 2014 (UTC)
- Still not updating. — Maile (talk) 19:08, 10 June 2014 (UTC)
- Fixed :) Not sure if this is the standard connectivity issues we've seen in the past with Toolserver or something else. Shubinator (talk) 06:21, 12 June 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks for fixing it. BlueMoonset (talk) 23:13, 12 June 2014 (UTC)
Something went wrong with the 16 June update around 0 UTC, thus updated manually. Please, have a look when time permits. Materialscientist (talk) 01:37, 16 June 2014 (UTC)
- Digging in. I migrated DYKUpdateBot over to Labs for this update, looks like something went wrong with the migration. If I can't sort it out before the next update I'll move the bot over to Toolserver as I debug Labs. Sorry for the trouble. Shubinator (talk) 05:00, 16 June 2014 (UTC)
- This is odd. The bot's running into issues on both Labs and Toolserver, which means our fallback plan won't work. Shubinator (talk) 05:15, 16 June 2014 (UTC)
- The bot is having trouble editing pages. It's unclear why this is happening; I can manually log in as the bot and edit pages, but the program can't. The program also can't edit pages when it's logged in as me, which suggests it's not a problem with the bot's account. DYKHousekeepingBot is fine, which is also odd, since the two bots share the same code for editing pages. I'll look into this more tomorrow evening, but right now it looks bleak. Shubinator (talk) 06:13, 16 June 2014 (UTC)
- I've narrowed down the issue to the login code. The bot isn't being logged in. I'm guessing a recent Mediawiki update causing this break since the bots' login code hasn't changed in quite a while. I'm looking at different ways of fixing this, but no ETA yet. On a related note, it's quite possible that DYKHousekeepingBot will stop working the next time I need to restart it. That's because the two bots share the same login code and I'm guessing DYKHousekeepingBot has simply retained its logged-in session from before the breaking change went into effect. Shubinator (talk) 01:18, 17 June 2014 (UTC)
- The bot's back up and running. It was a fairly subtle bug; the bot was having trouble with the read-login-read-edit sequence when it starts up. I tweaked the code so the bot logs in before the first read, and that fixed things. I'm not sure why that fixed things though; the underlying bug appears to be in the JavaWikiBotFramework (JWBF). I'm considering rewriting the bot in Python and against the Pywikibot framework so we're running on a more stable platform. Sorry for the multi-day outage. Shubinator (talk) 04:09, 19 June 2014 (UTC)
- And thanks to Materialscientist and Allen3 for keeping the updates rolling. Shubinator (talk) 04:10, 19 June 2014 (UTC)
The time frame for DYK eligibility has changed from 5 to 7 days: [1]. As such, you may want to change the coloring on Wikipedia:Did you know/DYK hook count. --ThaddeusB (talk) 22:05, 14 June 2014 (UTC)
- I'd like to suggest that you go from three colors to two: add two days to the white section so it totals eight rather than six, eliminate the light pink section (which probably dates back to the so-called "Swahili rule", and shows days six through eight), and make the rest the current dark pink (rose) color. Thanks for your help, Shubinator. BlueMoonset (talk) 01:23, 15 June 2014 (UTC)
- Done. Let me know if I mucked up the colors :) Shubinator (talk) 04:26, 19 June 2014 (UTC)
DYKcheck doesn't know about the Draft space
Shubinator, the current DYK review of The Lost Boys (professional wrestling) has revealed that DYKcheck doesn't know how to deal with the recently introduced Draft namespace. Draft is a general area that functions like a general draft area for articles that are being built, but in a common area rather than in a subdirectory of a User's space. So it basically needs to be treated like these: areas where it's okay to work for as long as you like until the article is ready for the main Wikipedia article space, at which point it gets moved into mainspace and the DYK clock starts ticking.
For this article, it started at AfC, was moved to Draft space on May 22 for further work (and the move comment leads me to believe that this is going to happen a lot), and then was moved from Draft to articlespace on May 30. The DYKcheck software caught the first move but not the second; the second one needs to be caught as it's what determines the start of the now-seven-day newness period.
Do you have any idea when you think you could incorporate this? Thanks for anything you can do to help. (I did ping you from the nomination's template, but those pings don't always work, and I thought it would be more useful to explain more fully here anyway.) BlueMoonset (talk) 18:45, 20 June 2014 (UTC)
- Note that I had requested this in December, so it should already be on your to-do list. MANdARAX • XAЯAbИAM 19:33, 20 June 2014 (UTC)
- Fairly straightforward tweak, so I've gone ahead and made the change. Let me know if it isn't working the way you expect. (And yeah, messages here are better than the pings.) Shubinator (talk) 05:29, 23 June 2014 (UTC)
- It's working on the article I mentioned above. I don't know of any others offhand. Many thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 13:28, 23 June 2014 (UTC)
DYKUpdateBot's feelings
I saw you comment about this at DYK talk and I hope you don't think I was insulting your work with this edit. If you did, I'm sorry. I was just having some fun with TRM's outburst (referring to a Mitchell and Webb sketch about a robot that confuses cheese and petrol). Belle (talk) 01:24, 25 June 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks for clarifying. I sensed that you meant it as a joke, but in the future, keep in mind that it's tough to incorporate suicide into a good joke, especially on the Internet. Independent of your comment, the general atmosphere around the bot's messages have not been positive. That's ok, my code isn't perfect, but I'd rather see the community work towards constructive solutions than rage at code. The unconstructive atmosphere surrounding the bot (and honestly, DYK itself) is what I was referencing in my comment at WT:DYK. Of the editors advocating change, you're one of the more constructive ones, and I appreciate that. Shubinator (talk) 01:34, 25 June 2014 (UTC)
