Images/Copyright

Hi, thanks for the info. I am a little confused about the copyright thing. What do I have to write on it exactly? Thanks again. Baron Ronan Doyle of Sealand (talk) 20:49, 23 January 2010 (UTC)

DYK message

Hey Shubinator, Johnny-come-lately here: please see comment at Template_talk:Did_you_know#David_M._Malone. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 16:42, 28 January 2010 (UTC)

Replied there. Thanks for leaving a note here; I'd completely forgotten about that. Shubinator (talk) 03:10, 29 January 2010 (UTC)
Oh, it's my mistake entirely; I should have followed up myself but I got caught up in work, ear infections, and BLPs. Please look again: I think I should be at 5x now. Thanks! Drmies (talk) 17:30, 29 January 2010 (UTC)
An ear infection sounds unpleasant. Hope you're feeling better now. (Oh, and you're good to go for the DYK.) Shubinator (talk) 23:26, 29 January 2010 (UTC)

Hey Shubinator Questions?

Hey Shuninator I'd already add a reference that is a third party.

Can I ask you some question?

1st: My article GameClub has proposed for deletion because of it has no reference but i putted in already, how it will removed from deletion?

2nd: How can I make my article Special Force Online semi-protected so the article is not vandalized, last week many editors vandalized this and putted many hacking sites deleting important datas and replacing nonsense things like (Special force top 10 hackers, replacing the main logo with dxt gaming, replacing links with dxt gaming).????? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Majestic27 (talkcontribs) 08:35, 31 January 2010 (UTC)

Hi Majestic
I hope Shubinator doesn't mind me commenting on this, I happened to notice your question when it flashed up when I was checking edits on Huggle. I can help you with the second question, I'm afraid I don't know enough about article deletion to help you with the first.
If any page is suffering vandalism, it can be reported at WP:RFPP. You can request that the article is semi-protected so that anonymous IPs can't edit it, or you can request that the article is fully locked so that nobody other than admins can edit it. From what I can remember from a discussion I had with an admin a few months ago, I think an article has to be vandalised at least 3 times within 24 hours before they will consider even semi-protecting it and it must be recently vandalised. So, for example, if your article was last vandalised on Thursday, it would be pointless in requesting protection today because of the time that has elapsed.
I hope this makes it a little clearer for you --5 albert square (talk) 08:56, 31 January 2010 (UTC)
You cannot stop the deletion process by removing the template from the article. This is seen as vandalism and you will be blocked fairly quickly if you keep removing the template. I'll restore it for you.
You can save the article from deletion by adding as many reliable, third-party references as you can find. Newspapers would probably be the easiest. Don't forget to use inline citations.
As 5 albert square said, you can request page protection at WP:RFPP, but your request will most likely be declined because there's not that much vandalism.
Also, an article does not "belong" to any editor. Wikipedians dislike editors referring to articles as "my articles".
Hope this helps, Shubinator (talk) 18:22, 31 January 2010 (UTC)

Mayerson Law

I work for the Law Firm. I own the images. They are mine, on any website, Wikipedia or mayersonlaw.com. I have every and all permissions to use them. Sorry I'm not some Wikipedia genius about this sort of thing. I just want the images on the page. If you can make this happen, that would be great. —Preceding unsigned comment added by PhillyPartTwo (talkcontribs) 23:03, 1 February 2010 (UTC)

If you own the copyright, you should send an email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org saying who you are, and giving permission for the images to be used. Mayersonlaw.com says the images are fully copyrighted at the bottom. I'll add permission tags to the images, which will give you one week to establish proof of copyright license. Keep in mind that if you release the images under a free license, as you have done, anyone can use them, redistribute them, and make a profit from them. DYK on Sallie Gardner at a Gallop

Hi Shub, I've always looked at your opinions as very sensible stuff either negative or positive. That's why in light of this matter I would like to ask your opinion with regard to this DYK Nomination, which has been arguing the contents of Sallie Gardner at a Gallop and Eadweard Muybridge. We'll appreciate your inputs on this issue and I'd like to clear my perspective in this matter as well. I'd like to correct how I view articles should be created if in case I'm wrong. Thanks. --TitanOne (talk) 11:37, 5 February 2010 (UTC)

Looks like the thread on WT:DYK has winded down, so I'll respond here. Our rules are fairly clear about copied text; the article must meet the creation or expansion requirements after the copied text has been subtracted. So if it's a new article, it must have at least 1500 characters of original (not copied) text, and if it's an expansion, there should be a 5x expansion of original text. This rule has been enforced regularly, and I don't think it will change soon (and though there are exceptions to every rule, this doesn't seem like one of them). Hope this helps, Shubinator (talk) 02:19, 6 February 2010 (UTC)

Web Slices

I'd like to solicit your opinion regarding adding "web slices" to the Wikipedia main page at Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical)#Webslices_for_the_main_page.Smallman12q (talk) 15:04, 6 February 2010 (UTC)

Added a comment there. Shubinator (talk) 17:33, 6 February 2010 (UTC)

Semi-protecting Wikipedia talk:Did you know

Please reconsider: talk pages are protected only in emergency. That talk is not a highly visible page and is the portal to communicate with the project; it has not been vandalized in my memory. Materialscientist (talk) 02:44, 7 February 2010 (UTC)

It's only move-protected. Shubinator (talk) 02:46, 7 February 2010 (UTC)
My bad. Sorry. Materialscientist (talk) 02:47, 7 February 2010 (UTC)
No worries :) Shubinator (talk) 02:49, 7 February 2010 (UTC)

Several hours ago, you corrected the Iranian Space Agency item based on a report at WP:ERRORS. However, I had just made the exact opposite change hours prior to that. As my edit summary says, the version you changed it back to is incorrect because it sounds like we're saying the rocket returned to Earth unharmed. First, if we were talking about the rocket, we should probably say undamaged. Second, it's not really clear whether the rocket itself did return undamaged; I see that the animals returned in a capsule, but it's entirely possible that the "rocket" part was jettisoned away from the capsule, as there would have been little need for it beyond launch. Third, even if the rocket was recovered, the idea that a rocket would be completely undamaged is a bit improbable; surely some minor damage occurred. The intended meaning, obviously, is that the animals returned safely, unharmed. Perhaps the reader found the that a bit awkward, but the way you reworded the piece makes it incorrect. -- tariqabjotu 09:56, 7 February 2010 (UTC)

The sentence didn't sound just a little awkward to me, it sounded almost grammatically wrong. Your latest change looks fine though. Shubinator (talk) 16:26, 7 February 2010 (UTC)

Rename

Thanks Shubinator for renaming all of the DYK credits! JulieSpaulding 11:56, 8 February 2010 (UTC)

User:Teancum has proposed Gamesoft Technology for deletion. You said creating an article with article on it is enough for A7. Please explain why did User:Teancum put Gamesoft Technology here?

—Preceding unsigned comment added by Majestic27 (talkcontribs) 15:04, 15 February 2010 (UTC)

Articles can be speedily deleted, without going through a deletion discussion, if they fail A7 (or any of the other CSD criteria). However, any article can be nominated for deletion at AfD. The two deletion processes are separate. Hope this helps, Shubinator (talk) 05:15, 16 February 2010 (UTC)

Bug in DYKUpdateBot published code?

Hi, I'm not a Java programmer, but I think I just found a bug in the published version of the code of DYKUpdateBot (talk · contribs), in tagArticles().

				// make sure the title corresponds to a real article
				title = title.substring(0, 1).toUpperCase() + title.substring(1); // capitalize first letter
				SimpleArticle article = new SimpleArticle(readContent(enBot, title));
				if (article.getText() == "") { // if the article's been deleted, or otherwise nonexistent
					logError("Article " + title + " does not exist");
					continue;
				}
				// THE BUG IS IN THE LINE BELOW
				if (article.getText().toLowerCase().trim().startsWith("#redirect") != -1) {
					// don't want to tag the talk page of a redirect

This might lead to all talk pages being detected as redirects, with the talk page of the first link in the article detected as the target. I would think, however, that this error would be obvious when looking at the bot's contributions, and that in the version of the code you are running, this is not an issue. Just letting you know that the published code looks incorrect. PleaseStand (talk) 12:33, 23 February 2010 (UTC)

I'm not sure where you're seeing an error. The running code doesn't have the .trim() (but probably should). The line is checking if the first 9 characters of the wikitext of the article, minus whitespace at the start and end, are "#redirect" (case insensitive). Shubinator (talk) 15:14, 23 February 2010 (UTC)
Oh, you're talking about the != -1 part. Yes, that's an error on my part copying. I've fixed it now. Thanks! Shubinator (talk) 05:18, 24 February 2010 (UTC)
