Klamath River

[edit]

Hi Shannon. I wanted to give you a heads-up that Finetooth thinks the Klamath River article needs to be looked at a bit more closely (see here). I'm going to copyedit the article; feel free to pitch in or discuss on the talk page. Jsayre64 (talk) 16:18, 17 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Klamath River

[edit]

Congrats on the GA for Klamath River. Even though you live in Southern California, you've done a great deal to advance the Oregon stream articles. Perhaps we could make you an honorary Oregonian. Finetooth (talk) 16:20, 29 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I was gone the past week, coming back to a pleasant surprise sure is a treat. :D However I don't think I've done enough for Oregon to recieve that great of an honor, but maybe I've just forgotten or something. I have been eyeing the Deschutes and Umpqua River articles for a long time, though. If you and Jsayre don't mind I'll add the Klamath to my list of good articles I have credit for... Shannon+º! 05:28, 31 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Please do. You were the main contributor. And, yes, the Umpqua and Deschutes articles need some TLC. I hope your trip was interesting and fun. Finetooth (talk) 18:20, 31 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed, you were a significant contributor. I know you worked hard on the article even if it was well before the GA review. I'll take a look at the Umpqua and Deschutes articles and see what I can do. Jsayre64 (talk) 22:42, 31 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
So shall I. I'll probably be busy for what remains of summer, but I'll see to the two as well. Shannon+º! 01:54, 1 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestion for WikiProject United States to support WikiProject Washington

[edit]

It was recently suggested that WikiProject Washington might be inactive or semiactive and it might be beneficial to include it in the list of projects supported by WikiProject United States. I have started a discussion on the projects talk page soliciting the opinions of the members of the project if this project would be interested in being supported by WikiProject United States. Please feel free to comment on your opinions about this suggestion. --Kumioko (talk) 01:39, 16 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hayfork Creek images

[edit]

Hi Shannon. I wanted to let you know that I've tagged a file you uploaded, File:Hayfork Creek smaller.jpg, for speedy deletion under WP:CSD#F5 because I've found a free replacement and uploaded it. It's File:Hayfork Creek.jpg. Jsayre64 (talk) 04:09, 16 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks a bunch. When I made that page I'd been looking for a free licensed image for a long time, but couldn't find any. Though I note the older one had a better resolution... Shannºn 04:23, 16 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You're right, the non-free image was better. But unfortunately it violates copyright rules. In fact, in most cases, you're not allowed to upload a non-free image of a creek because it can be deleted with {{Di-replaceable fair use}}. Even if you can't find a free image of the creek on the Internet, one can still go to the creek and take a picture of it. Pain in the neck, but that's the way it is. I think you should give yourself credit on your user page for making a significant contribution to Willamette River. Finetooth (talk) 23:11, 1 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I wouldn't say "significant" but "one-fifth" might be more accurate. Now if only there was a picture of a fifth of a barnstar. Thank you for the credit though. :) Shannºn 01:56, 2 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

On Your New Notoriety on Wikipedia

[edit]

Hi Shannon1,

Wow, 18000 edits already? Do you ever sleep? Do you live on caffeine drinks and hot pockets? Just wondering. Anyway, you may want to google search key words about your newly identified notoriety. (Ppl are so base I tell ya. Yes?) Anyway congrats on all your hard work here (along with all the other authors too). Hey, maybe you should write a book or something too? Keep Up the Good Work Schweetie. Cheers. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 198.228.196.8 (talk) 08:34, 6 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Woh I didn't know somebody actually decided to mention me on Wikipedia's front page... but anyhows after taking a look, I didn't quite find any sign of my presence anywhere. Was this yesterday, perhaps? Sad I missed it :P Thanks for the encouragement though. I think I should get back to work on Wikipedia, been skimping out for the past few days Shannºn 02:32, 7 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Well - you missed out on some 'cheap thrills' then. I first saw your smiling face up around 6 dec 11 (07:53 am) or thereabouts replacing 'the (irate? and po'd (?)) programmer dude picture' in the 'plea for donations to wiki panel' at the top of every wiki page. Looks like your picture was up for a day or so. You were smiling to 470 million users per month (for a day or so)- very trippy. Out of curiousity I did 'search engine' some key words off your panel (which was screen captured and posted it seems) and there are still some links regarding you still up. Some mouse clicks led to a panel with a fuller pic. of you and text:

"From a Wikipedia contributor

I'm a university student. Textbooks for one semester cost me $500. On Wikipedia, I get thousands of books' worth of information for free.
That’s why I don’t just read Wikipedia, I help create it. It’s really important to me to keep this resource available to everyone, free of charge. With 470 million readers per month, Wikipedia is important to many people all over the world. ....etc."

What university? You must have a light schedule (or major - English Major maybe?) to also be able to do that many wiki edits too?! Nosey ppl want to know. Anyway, with such a drive to write I'm sure xulonpress or lulu would love to get your book ideas. With 'print on demand' tech. there is much less overhead in getting a book published these days. Do you have one (or two)in you? Maybe on "How to edit wiki"???
Cheers,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h8dCGTvCLXg&feature=related (more cheap thrills - from the sidelines:P (viewing doesn't count as 'skimping out')). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 198.228.198.14 (talk) 23:27, 8 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure, has there been a case of mistaken identity? I do have about 19000 edits. But I'm just a weird high school student. Shannºn 04:03, 9 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Oops - you're right. It was actually User:GorillaWarfare being shown (her talk page is now locked). However, your edit count is higher so why don't you petition for some 'top panel' air time soliciting donations for wiki? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 198.228.196.122 (talk) 06:43, 9 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Aha, no wonder. :) How did that banner link you to my username in the first place though? I'm a little bit curious. And yes, I think that appearing on top of the Main Page might be fun. Shannºn 07:32, 10 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I googled "wikipedia contributor of 18,000 edits" (instead of what it linked to) and amongst some racey links your's was the first one USER (name) showing so I assumed that you were the one being referred to. Great - you sould petition ASAP to get some face /hang time on the 'wiki pleading for donations' top panel. After all, 19,000+ edits should get you something besides the satisfaction of doing the edits.:) Also, what's with the trout whacking??? anyways :P
(Undid the front end declustering chop eh?)
Anyway, you must have had that key phrase on your talk page recently for it to show up on the search engine like that.
Also, why did you describe yourself as 'a weird little...'
Anyway, it looks like your trout whack(ing) is a little premature given that you've not yet been posted on the top of the page for soliciting donations. Have you made any effort to get posted on the top panel? Cheers

Hi Shannon. Reade has noted on the List of longest rivers of Canada talk page that the Saint John River on the map, File:Longest Rivers of Canada.jpg, needs a label. Could you add a label? Missouri River

[edit]

Very fine work on such a massive article...I was invited to leave comments but I'm mainly a geography buff so that may be the section I'll comment the most on. Nice job!--MONGO 02:16, 8 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! :D I'll try to revise the page accordingly best as I can. Shannºn 02:38, 8 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'll check back tomorrow...it all looks well, so forgive me if I seem like a nitpick...--MONGO 03:55, 8 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I recruited Mike Cline to check it out too...he lives in Montana and has some first hand knowledge of the rivers there. I'm going to continue to pick at it, but I'm leaning to suport the promotion. You're not obligated to add or adjust things just on my comments of course and I'm not beholden to them.--MONGO 03:16, 9 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Red Mesa Dam questions

[edit]

Hey Shannon, why did this article have the wrong picture and several w/ls piped to Troll (Internet)? Also, several of the references just link to Wikipedia, the coordinates don't land on a dam and I can't find it on USBR's website.--NortyNort (Holla) 14:13, 2 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I've responded on the article talkpage. Maybe you should take a look at the dates in teh article history... :) Shannºn 17:44, 2 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I was quite confused...I haven't seen such an elaborate or discreet April Fool's joke here on WP. I wouldn't of figured it out but I wanted to check the specs of its power plant.--NortyNort (Holla) 14:39, 3 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Elaborate, yes... but I don't think elaborate enough to be inducted into the April Fools hall of fame, which I was going for. :3 Shannºn 17:49, 3 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't see it until yesterday and I think most editors at WP:NPP just took it as legit because it looked well-put together. I didn't pay much attention to April Fool's this year and didn't have it on my mind. I was just thinking "What is Shannon up to?"--NortyNort (Holla) 21:12, 3 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Nanhua.jpg. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information.

Hi. I reverted your addition of Category:Dams completed in 1976 from this article. I believe that the rule of thumb is that no red-linked (i.e. non-existent) categories should be added to articles. Idf you're planning on creating this category, I believe you have to create it first, and then add it to articles. Thanks, Beyond My Ken (talk) 03:54, 21 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I have created the category. I'm currently in the middle of categorizing dams constructed by year, so there will be some red linked categories lying around for a while. I will try to get them fixed as soon as possible. Shannºn 03:56, 21 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I saw that you created the cat and reverted me, so all's well. Sorry to have bothered you, bad timing on my part. Beyond My Ken (talk) 03:56, 21 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
No problem - thanks for the heads up, actually, I'd almost forgotten that one was still redlinked.

Hi,

I passed Oroville Dam for GA. I left a few comments at Talk:Oroville Dam/GA1, but nothing important enough to prevent its promotion. Congratulations! Very well done. (Feel free to change any of my edits.[2]

Best wishes, MathewTownsend (talk) 21:45, 2 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! I'll try to address the concerns you brought up in the review. As for the damages prevented, yes, I'm not sure if that's a reliable source. I will look into that accordingly. Shannºn 22:02, 2 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, just wanted to personally thank you Shannon for your contributions and help with (all articles of course), but specifically with the Oroville Dam and Oroville-Thermalito Complex articles. I really respect your contributions as I'm a Butte County resident and live right next to Oroville Dam, and am also a "Dam Geek" lol ;) and love any engineering but especially hydro engineering. I created the Oro-Therm article a few years back, and although I've been a WP member for 6 years, I'm more of an editor, not an "article creator" and have just recently gotten back into frequent contributing to WP, so still a novice on the super-technical stuff. Anyway, I created the Oro-Therm article and just wanted to thank you and others for helping me make it better and keeping it 'proper'. As my only "from scratch" article, It's kinda my baby lol and I really appreciate the help, because I honestly didn't (and still kinda don't lol) know the technical aspects of getting/keeping it up to wiki standards. As a semi-novice, I've got some really pertinent questions about photos and just don't understand it, and can't get help or the answers I need from anywhere. Hopefully if you've got a spare minute or two, you or another experienced respected Wikipedian can help end my frustration with an issue I'm having, and finally I can get the article the way I envisioned it. Thanks again for all your work. Cheers! :) -Caleb L., Oroville CA

Missouri River botch

[edit]

Hi Shannon1...there must be sme server lag or something on my end as I thought I had removed the "second" comment about the status of the Missouri River. When I saw the IP edit, I checked then what the change was and it looked like the IP added second so I reverted it. But as it turns out, the IP had actually removed the second wording, I ended up adding it back and then you reverted me. So either their is a botch or I simply made a mistake and I apologize.--MONGO 04:37, 20 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Aha I'm sorry about that, I wasn't blaming you, though the second/first thing on the Missouri River page has been going on for months, and I've had to revert it a few times myself. Seems like most of the anonymous editors think the Mississippi is longer or something, I dn't know. Cheers Shannºn 04:51, 20 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
No problema...Looks like it was my gaffe. So...are you still planning on trying again for an FA effort on the article or was the last one too exhausting. I know it can be frustrating. Several of the FA's I worked on failed on the first go and in one case, would have failed a second FAC had it not been for the timely arrival of a supreme copyeditor.--MONGO 05:07, 20 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm. I've been sort of on-off on Wikipedia for the last couple of months - too busy with schoolwork, internships, that sort of stuff. I might redo the citations and give it another go during Christmas break, but yeah, that stuff's pretty frustrating. I'd be happy for any suggestions how I might improve the article. Shannºn 19:06, 20 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'll start looking it over a bit more and review what the complaints were so those can be addressed.--MONGO 04:39, 25 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the help. If I remember, the only thing that killed it at the last FAC was a few misinterpreted citations in places which led the reviewers to think the whole article had citation problems. I lack the time to fully address the referencing at the moment although I'll probably be able to do more work in December (provided the world doesn't end). File permission problem with File:PetersCanyonReservoir.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:PetersCanyonReservoir.jpg, which you've attributed to Orange County Archives. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or

You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

San Timoteo

[edit]

Hey Shannon! I was checking out some river-related pages for southern California, since I am down here visiting for a week. Being in the Redlands area I was looking at some pages you made, like List of tributaries of the Santa Ana River and the nice map File:SAR Map.jpg. I just noticed that there does not seem to be a page about San Timoteo Creek (or Wash, as GNIS seems to call it), and it is not listed on the list of tributaries of the Santa Ana River. But GNIS has it as a tributary, U.S. Geological Survey Geographic Names Information System: San Timoteo Wash, and NWIS has discharge data, [3] and [4] (here the USGS calls it a Creek instead of a Wash). I considered making a page for it but thought I'd write you first, since you seem to have been quite thorough on streams in this region. Perhaps there is a reason, or I am confused, or has it actually been overlooked? Pfly (talk) 05:20, 7 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Pfly, long time no speak. I see that San Timoteo Wash has indeed slipped my eye. I probably thought of making that article a few times in the past, but funny, never got around to it! I see it isn't in the list of tributaries of the Santa Ana, either. According to USGS topos, the wash seems to begin as two streams, Little San Antonio Creek and Noble Creek, in the San Bernardino Mountains about 10 miles east of Redlands. It is a pretty major stream in terms of drainage area, but I've never actually seen it flowing, in the few times I've been around those parts. I've been awfully busy these few months; it would be awesome if you could make a page for it, maybe even add a photo if you actually were around the wash. Shannºn 04:49, 9 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Heya! I've been busy too, but if I find the time and focus I'll make a little page. Flying back north tomorrow. I was in the general area but didn't actually see it (or didn't notice it if I did!), so no photo. Maybe there's something out there on the webbernet... Pfly (talk) 05:31, 9 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Made San Timoteo Creek—turned out less stubby than I expected, though could certainly be improved. There's more history to the creek and canyon than I expected. I only skimmed the surface. Pfly (talk) 06:40, 10 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Nice job on the article. I'll see if I can add more information sometime. I was surprised too at how much information there is on the creek; it's relatively obscure in the hydrological consciousness of SoCal... (at least that's what I thought) Shannºn 02:16, 12 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I am honored! There's still a lot to work on the article before its even close to reaching GA status, though, especially in the last section, whihch I have not gotten to yet. Also, just to mention it, FA is an absolute PITA... I have gone through about seven or eight FACs and only one has ever passed. They're super nitpicky on source and formating things I really don't know or care about; I'm much better at just putting down content. Shannon 16:08, 2 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Category alphabetization

[edit]

Hey Shannon, I see you are filling up the "Dam on X River" category. I am not sure if you know this but when you create a category with a parent category, you should enter the name at the end of the parent category so it alphabetizes correctly.

Example: Dams on the Boise River, the parent cat is Dams in the United States by river. If you place it in there just like that, then under Category:Dams in the United States by river it will show up under the letter "D" as opposed to "B". It should be Boise You can see the correction I made here.--NortyNort (Holla) 03:07, 14 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ah thanks, I'll go take care of that now. This seems like an undertaking on a similar scale as that Dams by year of completion affair... :) Shannon 03:10, 14 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I had a feeling that once you got wind of this you'd be at it!--NortyNort (Holla) 03:19, 14 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Whoops. I didn't know you were working on it. At any rate, I was just looking to see if there was a major list missing, and alas, there was. I'm seeing if I can get it to featured list status. I'd love if you could help. Shannon 18:19, 22 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I never actually worked on it. I found one unreliable source listing the top ten or so then the list hit the 'back-burner'. I think it is valuable because a list like it really isn't freely available on the web. I sure can help out. From what I can see now just some citations are needed and most of the references need to be formatted. I will help out sometime this week when I get my things together.--NortyNort (Holla) 00:02, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Sweet. It's actually far from complete, even a 5 minute search on Google Maps tends to turn up more reservoirs to add to the list. Also I have a few things in the pipeline, with O'Shaughnessy Dam up for GA, and a possible push for FA of Colorado River, and a busy summer... I'll see what I can do. Shannon 21:17, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, well I will work on the article from time to time. I have two GA nominees now too.--NortyNort (Holla) 00:36, 24 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Colorado River FAC

[edit]

Hi Shannon. I'm traveling. For another week or so, I will have no Internet connection on some days and an unpredictable connection on other days. However, I'll try to make a few edits as I go and try to do something more substantial later. Finetooth (talk) 01:43, 28 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Finetooth thanks for the reply. Actually, I'm gonna have to withdraw the FAC within about 10 days because I'm due to travel as well, so if you aren't available it's totally fine. Assuming the current FAC doesn't fail/pass within about a week or so (which seems quite likely at the moment), I'll probably re-nom sometime in August. Btw, enjoy your trip! Shannon 03:13, 28 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, works for me too! I began a quick read but didn't get too far. Will be better able later this summer! Pfly (talk) 04:24, 28 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
And me. I don't yet feel qualified to comment on articles at FAC, but I'm happy to help the article in other ways. Jsayre64 (talk) 18:56, 28 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for all your input. I think I'll just respond to whatever comments they have now and see how it goes. End of summer sounds like a better option for me too. Shannon 19:05, 29 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I am also pretty busy at the moment, but will try to look at it over the next few weeks and make some review comments on the talk page and/or the next FAC. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 00:05, 1 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

An unregistered user has since inserted what appears to be original research data into a sentence about the depth of the upper river. I reverted the change with an explanation, but my revert was reverted a couple of days later. Is it worth starting a section on the talk page about WP:NOR and this alleged sonar data, do you think? Finetooth (talk) 16:47, 8 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

In case you hadn't noticed, the National Park Service likes your map. (Although they didn't credit you...) LittleMountain5 07:37, 3 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hm, I see they credited the USGS. Did I list that as the source for the terrain? I thought I always used Demi's Mapserver... I might want to check that. Shannon 18:21, 3 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Ha, cool, how flattering, the NPS! I might send them a little note about proper attribution though... Pfly (talk) 10:25, 8 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Aras/Kura River Maps

[edit]

Dear Shannon, Thank you for your continued work in making the hydrology of planet earth more transparent!

In reading about the Armenian capital, Yerevan, and the economic importance of its river "Hrazdan" I linked to maps you created for the Aras River and Kura River Basins. I'm afraid both these maps incorrectly depict Hrazdan River beginning from the eastern edge of Lake Sevan and snaking southwards, avoiding any major cities. While another Wiki source shows the Hrazdan River beginning at the western edge of the lake, and then moving southwest through the capital city of Yerevan, ultimately joining the Aras river near the Turkish border.

Please compare label placement of "Hrazdan River" on the following maps to those on the two you created :)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rivers_and_lakes_in_Armenia
http://www.grida.no/graphicslib/detail/armenia-topographic-map_63a4#
Many thanks!! -- NickyFiddle P.S. the Wiki page called "Rivers and Lakes in Armenia" may depict the ARPA river following the same path as the one marked "Hrazdan" on the 2 maps in question — Preceding unsigned comment added by 198.255.186.199 (talk) 09:48, 17 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Eel River

[edit]

Greetings Shannon1: I saw your multiplicity of edits today to the Eel River (California) page and made a few changes to what you had added, which by and large was fine. Your lamprey taxonomy reference was confused, I have updated that. There were a few things you changed which weren't in the references cited and no other citations were given, so I changed those back to match the reference, particularly that the dam project was envisioned in the 1960s, not the 1950s. I personally own that book and checked the information tonight, the book says 1960s. I removed "Rio Dell" and "Ferndale" from worst hit towns in 1964 flood because they weren't, nor did the reference given say they were. Not a single building in Ferndale city limits was damaged, the bottoms area around Ferndale took a heavy hit, but that is not the same thing at all, particularly when several towns including Miranda, were wiped completely off the map with a 100% loss of all buildings. I restored the cubic feet per second discharge because I don't see any reason to remove it. I replaced the location of Fernbridge as being the first bridge up from the mouth (not "near Ferndale, California") because it is 5 miles away and in its own town. There were three uses of one citation, each had been entered separately, I combined those three. There were two uses of another citation and those also I combined. I removed multiple Wikilinkings of the same entity, e.g. Fernbridge, and did minor cleanups to the citations; all of the above in one edit. I think the lede needs to be reworked, there should not be citations up there, and Josiah Gregg is not mentioned below at all, so that part is rather a mess. If you don't feel you wish to undertake that, let me know and I'll add it to my to-do list. Cheers! Ellin Beltz (talk) 09:39, 17 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

PS - Please check the statement "the lowest stream gage is at Scotia". There is a gage at Fernbridge also maintained by the USGS. I was unable to verify that Scotia is the lowest gage on the river. Ellin Beltz (talk) 09:44, 17 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the clarifications. I would consider the Eel River a work in progress; I've been wanting to work on it for years now, but never really got around to more than just random editing from time-to-time, so it is a bit messy, I suppose. As regards for the discharge, I have to change that; Scotia is the lowermost gauge at which streamflow in cfs is measured, while the Fernbridge gauge measures only river stage. The 1964 flood is a historical event of interest to me so I've been thinking about expanding on it for a while, though I'm not too familiar with local history so I'm not too qualified to write about it. If you're familiar with these topics, I'd love if you could contribute. Again, thanks! Shannon 03:51, 18 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Glad you're working on it, I looked at it a while back and made a few minor changes and felt rather overwhelmed and wrote a page on the Salt River instead. In your edits today, you cited "http://humboldtherald.wordpress.com/2009/05/23/undoing-of-the-dos-rios-dam/. With all due respect to the anonymous "Heraldo" of that blog, it's not a reliable source on any topic having been unedited and unproofed for it's entire run. I know this personally as they published things I wrote without any fact checking at all! Maybe we can find a better source for this than Heraldo. Did you see the historical flows that someone moved to the talk page? I was thinking of ways to perhaps reincorporate those to the main article. I have most of the local references either here or available at the Ferndale Museum whom you can also contact by telephone to ask for research assistance. Looking forward to a fun collaboration; ask me anything I'll try to find it! Cheers! Ellin Beltz (talk) 05:14, 18 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, the Dos Rios Dam is a significant though very obscure subject, so it's practically impossible to find reliable Internet sources on it (though there is pretty good coverage in Reisner's Cadillac Desert). I'm seeking to put in more info regarding the (almost achieved) damming of the entire Eel River system in the '50s and '60s. The rivers of the entire North Coast, actually, the Klamath, Trinity, Eel and others, were all slated for damming under various Bureau of Reclamation and Army Corps of Enginneers plans, needless to say this would have destroyed all the salmon, they call this the "best kept secret in Western water history"... I could go on for hours about this, but that's time probably better spent actually adding content to the article. At any rate, I'll look for better references.
Anyway, back on topic. Regarding streamflow, I could add more; perhaps something like the tables I did on on Colorado River#Discharge, showing the progression of streamflow at different points throughout the basin. The Eel River really has a very interesting flow regime, it's almost like one of our seasonal creeks in SoCal, the discrepancy between winter and summer flows are incredible. Also, I am tempted to expand on the Course section (although considering you're a local, you might know more about the "kinks" of the river than I do, I've only been along the Eel once, and that was four years ago and counting, I think. Shannon 05:28, 18 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Eel River, Humboldt County, California

[edit]

Greetings Shannon: I have worked through the Eel River page again and I have some comments. First, I removed the "preppers" website and the religious texts as non-reliable sources. I also removed the letter to the editor of the New York Times as it is opinion not news. I also removed the "rumor" of what Ronald Reagan might maybe possibly have said as there is no proof he ever said it and rumor has little place in a reliable article. I also removed a URL citation you had and replaced it with the book the information came from. I have also fleshed out all the naked URL citations you were leaving behind. I removed your double-entry citation system where you recited works that had already been cited in the article. Do you need help with citations? I assumed you'd know how to do them after 22,000 edits, but if you need help, please let me know, it would be easier to show you how to do it the easy way the first time than to follow you around with the proverbial dustpan!! Hope you have a Merry Christmas! More later! Ellin Beltz (talk) 01:47, 24 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! Whoops, I'm sorry about the citations. I had started doing the formatting today but then got caught up with other work so I only ended up formatting about six of them. I'm just used to citing first and formatting later after I've decided which ones to keep and which ones I don't need. Anyhow, thanks for the help on that! I don't usually leave bare urls sitting around for too long, so don't worry if you see them lurking around after my edits. As for books, I prefer listing them separately from the web citations because I'll often have separate citations for different pages. Though I see what you're doing with the Reference pages template and that works too, so I'm happy to go along. Happy holidays to you too Shannon 03:22, 24 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hiya! The <ref name ="bookname" />{{rp|pagenumber}} is easier for the reader than the look up, look down, double entry system that some pages still use. It doesn't require typing the citation over again each time, just do it like above and you'll be fine! Eventually I'd like to get all the citations in the full citation format style, because this article could eventually go to "featured article" status and we'd just have to change them all at the end to fit that format! Upcoming L.A. events: Wik-Ed Women edit-a-thon (10/7, 6-10pm) and UCR edit-a-thon (10/16, 10am-4pm)

Dear fellow Wikipedian,

The Southern California Wikipedia community has two exciting events coming up in the next few weeks: a Wik-Ed Women editing session downtown designed to combat systemic bias, and a Wikipedia Loves Libraries event at UC Riverside!

Wik-Ed Women is a new monthly series of informal Wikipedia editing sessions for Los Angeles women-in-the-arts (though all are welcome) to contribute their expertise to Wikipedia, specifically expanding content about women artists. This second session will take place on Tuesday, October 7 from 6pm to 10pm at the Los Angeles Contemporary Archive downtown. Please RSVP here if you plan to attend.

The UC Riverside Wikipedia Loves Libraries event is an edit-a-thon targeting articles related to UC Riverside, SoCal, and beyond. Join students and faculty learning how to edit! This event will take place on Thursday, October 16 from 10am to 4pm at UCR's Tomás Rivera Library. Again, RSVPs are requested here.

River maps

[edit]

Wow! Thanks for all your work on watershed maps. I had no idea it was possible to draw maps like that with public-domain tools and data. I have got to learn how to use those tools.

I do have one comment about File:Snoqualmierivermap.jpg. It makes it looks like the South Fork joins the Middle fork well upstream of North Bend. Now, the two forks do get pretty close together there, but I'm pretty sure that the actual confluence is considerably farther downstream, actually a bit farther down than the North Fork joins (specifically, at 47°31′30″N 121°47′10″W / 47.525°N 121.786°W / 47.525; -121.786). I can imagine this is a glitch in the data set(s) you used, so it may not be simple to fix, but I wanted to point it out.

(But this is not to detract from your work! Thanks again.) —Steve Summit (talk) 16:27, 12 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the pointer. I checked it out on USGS topos, you're right, the South Fork does parallel the Middle Fork for a stretch before joining below the North Fork. Apparently the resolution on the database (DEMIS Mapserver) wasn't high enough so I was tricked into thinking that. I don't have the original file with me, it's on another computer, but I can probably Photoshop it into looking right. Shannon 02:34, 13 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

After moving from Los Angeles County to Kern County to San Luis Obispo County, I am finally realizing that there is life in California outside of L.A. and San Francisco, where I lived and grew up. I am trying to breathe life into the Southern California Task Force, and I hope you will join me. Could you visit our list of participants at the other end of this link and update your description of what you are interested in doing for us, assuming that you still want to be in the mix, that is.

Just wanted to say thanks for the catch on the maximum inflow for Oroville. It makes more sense as I changed the outflow to maximum. Do you think it's worth mentioning that the dam was a scant 8 hours (estimated) from going over the "100 year" emergency spillway back in 97? DYK for Oroville Dam crisis

[edit]

On 28 February 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Oroville Dam crisis, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that nine million fish were rescued from the Feather River Fish Hatchery during the 2017 Oroville Dam crisis (pictured)? You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Oroville Dam crisis), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

In your edit summardddddddddddddddddddddarticle itself has no sources. why remove new content without even confirming it?" I remove it for the same reason I pick up litter in my neighborhood; because if it builds it sends a message to the community that nobody cares, and leads to more litter. The broken windows theory follows this philosophy. I will often look for a source for a new editor who wishes to add something valuable to the project but has little ability to properly source their edit. For an experienced editor, who for whatever reason wishes to add significant content without taking the time to find a source--or worse, expects others to find it for them--I delete like a ninja. Magnolia677 (talk) 23:33, 28 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I suppose it would be petty, but in this situation it might also be good to give the original poster a friendly reminder. It doesn't do much good to just revert their edit, they probably wouldn't find out anyway. Shannon 00:21, 30 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
If they use Twinkle it notify them of a reverted edit. Also, I left this reminder with the editor six months ago. Magnolia677 (talk) 03:36, 30 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Yarlung Tsangpo map

[edit]

Hello! I just noticed on the map File:Yarlungtsangpomap.png that the Yarlung Tsangpo River is shown to extend 500km further west than its actual source, located approximately where the "u" is in the word "Yarlung". Is there any chance this map could be updated? Alternatively, if you have the original source file, I could attempt to fix this. Let me know what you think is best. Thanks! --NoGhost (talk) 21:53, 1 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Karun map

[edit]

Hello. Looks like source of the river drawn incorrect at this map. It should be somewhere here: 32°36′07″N 49°54′57″E / 32.60207°N 49.91587°E / 32.60207; 49.91587. References: [9], [10]. Please, fix it if you can. — Vort (talk) 15:00, 7 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I want to make watershed maps and may need some guidance

[edit]

So I've taken the plunge and really started learning how to use QGIS and Inkscape and all these data sources. (I had been working on this thing unrelated to Wikipedia but now I want to learn more about each individual basin starting with the largest... and what better way than to create free maps when there aren't any good ones?)

I see you're perhaps the largest (only?) source of fresh new drainage basin maps coming into Wikimedia Commons right now, so here's a few ways you could help me:

  • It'd be nice if I knew which areas you were planning to work on next, so we don't accidentally spend effort on duplicate maps (although that wouldn't be a disaster). I'm thinking of doing Yangtze River first.
  • When I upload my first maps, could you give me a review (tell me what sucks about them)?
  • As I go I might have questions about your workflow - I have two already:
    • Taking File:Mackenzie River basin map.png as an example, how do you make the drainage basin polygon pop out like that? Is it just a layer that's black outside inside the drainage basin and transparent inside outside, with a low opacity?
    • How do you get the text of the river names to curve gracefully like that? Is it all manual or is there some automatic way to get started? —Keenan Pepper 18:37, 18 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Keenan - I'm glad you're interested! I finish most of my maps in Adobe Illustrator, however so I'm not particularly familiar with Inkscape. But the processes should be similar. In regard to your questions, I basically do the drainage basin as a darker shape against a white background before layering the shaded relief on top (the relief layer has to be partially transparent, of course). To curve the text there is a "type on a path" tool in Illustrator and I would assume something similar is available in Inkscape, you'd just have to look at their documentation to find the exact tool. Note that saving in a SVG format tends to screw up the curved text, and I haven't found a way around that yet.
Right now I'm mostly doing rivers in North America, though I'm considering doing replacements for some of the Southeast Asia rivers (Mekong, Salween, Irrawaddy) in the near future.
I'd be happy to take a look at your maps, just send me a link whenever you upload. Cheers, Shannon [ Talk ] 20:06, 18 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Yangtze river map

[edit]
File:Yangtze River basin map.svg

I'd welcome any comments. —Keenan Pepper 17:58, 20 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The color scheme and linework look very nice, though the variation on the river widths is a bit too much IMO. The text on the other hand could use some refining - did you figure out how to use curved text in Inkscape? - and the country labels seem somewhat too big and dark. Content-wise it looks accurate, except what you have labeled the Min River is actually the Dadu River, a tributary of the Min (see Kmusser's older map here). Overall, though, good work! Shannon [ Talk ] 03:55, 21 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I just wanted to pop in and say if either of you want to re-make any of my China river maps feel free, while I think the rivers are correct, the province border layer I used as a background has lots of errors so they could really use it, but I don't think I'll get a chance to do so any time soon. Kmusser (talk) 14:54, 23 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
To Keenan, I think the map looks great, I think my only nitpick would be to italicize the river labels, it's a common mapping convention to italicize natural features (rivers, mountains, etc.) to help differentiate them from cities, countries, provinces, etc. I might fudge the basin boundary near the Yellow river so it's clearer that the Yellow doesn't enter it. Kmusser (talk) 15:03, 23 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the comments - I was in fact thinking about doing more Asian river maps, including replacing some of my own older maps as well. Hope to see some more of your maps in the near future, too! Shannon [ Talk ] 04:51, 25 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Sweet, Kmusser showed up! It turned out that the HydroSHEDS data I was using was not compatible with Commons (it has some dumb clause against "reverse engineering"), so I had to kind of start over with USGS Hydro1k data instead. I had to learn about Pfafstetter coding and how to use QGIS with different map projections... but now I'm all set up. Here's the new version of the Yangtze: —Keenan Pepper 05:20, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Looks a lot better. I'm aware of the strict limitations of SVG fonts but the river labels don't quite look right (compare with the Min River map I linked above - maybe just dull the color a little bit and play around with the available fonts?) Also I wasn't aware that HydroSHEDS wasn't public domain, I was under the false impression it came from USGS data; I've been using it for reference, so thanks for bringing that up! Oraibi Wash?

[edit]
Missing Oraibi Wash?
Aerial view looking north along Leupp–Oraibi Road (Indian Route 2) and the Oraibi Wash, across the Hopi Reservation in Arizona. In the distance, the wash separates Second Mesa (on the right) from Third Mesa (on the left). The road leads to Kykotsmovi Village (New Oraibi), the home of Hopi tribal government.

Shannon, great work on the maps. I got a shot of an ephemeral tributary of the Little Colorado River, which I think is Oraibi Wash, but it doesn't appear on your map. I think it converges with the Polacca Wash near Tolani Lake, Arizona. Here it is on Google Maps. I can only find fragmental info on these things (Google Maps doesn't show the wash names). Maybe you can find better. Dicklyon (talk) 01:41, 10 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I also got shots of File:Polacca Wash.jpg (to the east) and File:Dinnebito Wash.jpg (to the west) that seem to match your map. Dicklyon (talk) 03:05, 10 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Here I found a presenation with maps that agree with what I think I figured out. Is that helpful to you in updating your map? Dicklyon (talk) 04:06, 10 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for providing the photos! That is an older map of mine and I intend to replace it at some point. Many of those washes are actually labeled on USGS topo maps if you're interested... there's a whole bunch of them in that area! Shannon [ Talk ] 23:57, 11 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Got creeks?

I also got a few aerials of tributaries from the south of the Little Colorado, with sources in the Mogollon Rim area, which are shown in your Salt River map. See Clear Creek (Little Colorado River tributary) and Chevelon Creek. Dicklyon (talk) 23:36, 23 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Follow-up note

[edit]

I thought I would add that I've been largely inactive for about a year, and I've missed some important changes such as the disappearance of the geobox. My editing time is limited, so I've been doing easy things, nibbles and flybys, hence the overlink removals and map adjustments. I'm very happy that you and others continue to add content. Please keep up the good work. Finetooth (talk) 20:47, 21 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I also have my regrets about the geobox, but the anti-geobox crowd way outnumbered the "rivers editors" this time... all I could really do was push to save some features from geobox. Wasn't perfect but I think it was an ok compromise. It's always great to hear from you; hope to see you around a bit more if time allows! Shannon [ Talk ] 00:32, 22 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Colorado River (Argentina)

[edit]

Hi, Shannon1!

Thanks for your wonderful work. Let me point out that there is a mistake in the Colorado River (Argentina) map: the province east of the Desaguadero is not Mendoza but San Luis. Mendoza is the province west of the Desaguadero river, south of the San Juan province. See e.g. the map in Provinces of Argentina. Thank you, 181.171.182.205 (talk) 16:47, 25 May 2019 (UTC) (used to be User:Cinabrium eons ago).[reply]

Colorado River

[edit]

I noticed a error on File:Colorado_River_basin_map.png, it's including a small closed basin in Wyoming in the Colorado basin, namely HUC 14040200 "Great Divide Closed Basin" [11]. That section of the boundary was correct on your old map. Also as an aside, feel free to remove my old super simple maps once a detailed map is done, I found one still up on the Delaware River page. They were made for rivers that had no map at all and I think they're redundant once they have a better map. Kmusser (talk) 19:38, 19 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, thanks for bringing this up – although I seem to remember for some reason, the Great Divide Basin is often included in the Colorado River watershed. A quick image search shows some maps including the basin (like this) and some that don't (like this). You are right though that the basin doesn't actually drain into the Colorado. I'll get that fixed! Shannon [ Talk ] 04:55, 20 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, it's easy to do because if you're using the USGS HUC2 or HUC4 layers it'll get lumped in with the Colorado automatically, USGS has a tendency to lump small closed basins in with a convenient adjacent basin rather than leaving holes in their generalized maps. Kmusser (talk) 21:14, 20 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I see you created this article. I'm staying in the neighborhood, so got some photos for it. Anything else you'd like to see from Pagosa Springs area while I'm here? Maybe start Little Navajo River with some photos? Dicklyon (talk) 17:28, 21 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Started. Needs work on all the template details, which I might get to later. Dicklyon (talk) 18:42, 21 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for that- I may start filling in the infobox unless you get to it first. Speaking of nearby features that don't have a photo, I found: Florida River, Mancos River, Rio Grande Dam, Rio San Antonio (Colorado) (doesn't have an article either), and La Plata River (San Juan River tributary) could probably do with a better picture as well. It's a cool area! Definitely hope to explore it sometime.Shannon [ Talk ] 21:27, 21 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I won't have time to get that far from Pagosa Springs on this trip. Maybe the Florida, when we head to Durango airport. Lots of pictures of the San Juan of course. I've got a dozen or so more good aerials to upload, like of the Animas. And lots of "ColorFest" balloon festival shots of the San Juan. Dicklyon (talk) 03:26, 22 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I made it by Devil Creek, Los Pinos River, and Florida River this morning; good thing my flight is running late. Yesterday I bagged Sheep Cabin Creek, Lefthand Creek, Catchpole Creek, Wolf Creek (Mineral County, Colorado), Fall Creek, and the East and West Forks of the San Juan River. The day before, Stollsteimer Creek and Piedra River, including a pano of both of their valleys from Chimney Rock National Monument. I've got a few days or weeks of selecting and uploading ahead of me when I get home. Dicklyon (talk) 17:24, 24 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

On the flight to PHX I got the Florida River, Animas River, La Plata River (San Juan River tributary), Chaco River and its confluence with the San Juan at Shiprock and the Four Corners Power Plant, Black Creek, Rye Creek, Tonto Creek, and more. Dicklyon (talk) 19:07, 25 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Nice! Looking forward to seeing the pictures. And there's definitely a lot of streams out there with short or nonexistent articles such as the ones you mentioned; I may look into it once things settle down and I have more time to edit again. Shannon [ Talk ] 06:54, 26 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
