Hi, I’m new here. I’m having trouble updating the candle wick article. It seems new technology updates are not welcome? Braided candle wicks are very old technology but is the only wick type shown in photo and description. I’ve invited Adamant1, a person removing my updates, to update the wick information in hopes it’s completed to their satisfaction. Any advice to a new person, for this situation? Hello
Hi Sam - good to see you around these parts. Hope all is well with you. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 11:19, 10 May 2021 (UTC)
- Good to hear from you Lugnuts, I am well, thanks; I hope you too are well.
- In regards to the AFD: Let's for a second assume that "Thage" and "Tage" (different spellings of the same name in Swedish) is the same person, the date of death makes it plausible that "Thage" was a misspelling. Via a genealogy website, I found a grandson (born 1965) of Tage Brauer, who is on FB. Now, if I - or Julle - contacted him, and if he knows anything about his grandfather's participation in the 1912 Olympics, would there be a chance that we can get some closure here with e.g. an explanation like "he sprained his foot the day before the competition"? I think as you have said, it is most likely that TB had signed up, but did not show up. Sam Sailor 12:15, 10 May 2021 (UTC)
- Yes, all good here thanks. I think with the extra info that has been found, he should now pass WP:GNG, regardless of him taking part. Infact, I'll add that note to the AfD right now. Nice work from you and Julle! Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 12:18, 10 May 2021 (UTC)
- Sounds good, thanks. I would still love some closure on this one if we can get it. Julle is the best to judge if contacting the grandson would be inappropriately invasive in Sweden. Sam Sailor 17:23, 10 May 2021 (UTC)

A message from 2400:2410:500:6B00:D1A2:410C:785C:1E11
Hi Sam,
I edited the Pentatonic scales page to include information on Indian classical music. I study Indian classical music, and anyone who studies Indian classical music studies ragas and they know what notes each raga includes. The information is easily verifiable from numerous reliable sources, including the Kramik Pustak Malika, which is a series of textbooks on Indian classical music by Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vishnu_Narayan_Bhatkhande). It can also be verified from online sources, including raga databases such as this: [1] . I tried including a citation in my edit, but as I'm new to editing Wikipedia articles, and my citation did not go through. Perhaps I don't know where exactly in the article to put the citation, as I made changes to several locations.
Could you please let me know how to include the citations, or else republish my revision based on the above links provided?
P.S. Okay, it seems to have gone through now. Thanks.

- Namaste, IP. I added a few citations and linked to the ragas (or raags) I could find, have a look. I'll be happy to help you with citations or anything else, just ask. Tagging pages for speedy deletion
Hello, Sam Sailor,
I noticed you recently tagged some pages for CSD G13 speedy deletion. Please set up your Twinkle Preferences to "Notify page creator" so that every time you tag a page for deletion, the page creator receives a talk page notice. It's important that the draft creators know that they can request a restoration of their draft at WP:REFUND and they find this information out in these notices so please do this every time you tag any page for deletion in the future. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 22:01, 21 June 2021 (UTC)
- Hello, Liz,
- I'm a little surprised by your post. Unless practice recently was changed, there is no requirement that the creator should be notified. Let me know what you are referring to here.
- I notify page creators when I believe there could be a reasonable chance that they want to get a refund, e.g. Special:Diff/1029755013.
- For drafts that I believe show no promise, typically made by users with few or no edits outside their draft, I do not notify the page creator.
- Specifically, which G13-eligible drafts tagged for deletion by me are you referring to? Kind regards, Sam Sailor 22:32, 21 June 2021 (UTC)

Regards Chinese Metro images
Hey Sam, regards your comment here. When I started working on clearing Category:Articles with missing files 8-ish years ago I used to comment out a lot, but soon came to realise that what happened a lot was people just un-commenting again just adding back the problem, and I've never been aware of someone actually fixing the issues then un-commenting. I do comment out on templates as they do get fixed, but on articles I gave up as I saw no indication it was being practically helpful. The Chinese images have been a problem for years, because of the extremely low "threshold of originality" that China has (see c:COM:TOO China). In the past these issues were fixed correctly at source, but I have this and the previous issues outstanding at Template_talk:Rail-interchange. If fixed in the root template then they can be easily re-introduced, however for some reason at the moment no one is willing to make even obvious protected template fixes. Overall there are more China related deletions in the pipeline (c:Commons:Deletion requests/Files in Category:Logos of rail transport companies of China) and due to the long history I do not expect the images to be replaced. Also as these are non-essential images I do not believe they are covered by WP:FAIRUSE, but maybe I'm just to old and jaded. However I can say I'm very happy to see others fixing CAT:MISSFILE issues which ever way they see fit as I have spent way too many hours/years on that. Cheers KylieTastic (talk) 20:25, 14 July 2021 (UTC)

File:Guangzhou Metro icon.svg
Hi Sam Sailor. You uploaded File:Guangzhou Metro icon.svg as non-free content the other day, but I believe it's much too simple to be considered eligible for copyright protection not only in the c:COM:TOO United States, but also possibly in c:COM:TOO China. I asked an administrator named Hammersoft about this, and he seems to concur. The file currently has more than 100 uses which is why I was looking into it. There is pretty much no way possible to justify so many uses under WP:NFCC and meet the ten WP:NFCCP for each use as relevant Wikipedia policy requires. I'm assuming that the reason the file is being used on so many pages is because you (or perhaps someone else) added the file to some template (which isn't allowed per WP:NFCC#9).
Anyway, in a few days or so, a bot that searches non-free images for WP:NFCC#10c is going to pick up on this and notice that the file is lacking a valid non-free use rationale for each of its uses except for the one in Guangzhou Metro; the bot will then remove the file from these other pages. So, before any of that happens, you might want to sort out either (1) the file's licensing or (2) the excessive number of non-free uses. For reference, a freely-licensed or public domain (PD) file (e.g. an image from Commons) is not subject to WP:NFCC and therefore can be used in templates, etc. However, this will be based on the assumption that the file's licensing is accurate. My opinion is that this file would've probably been OK to upload to Commons, but you might want to ask about it at c:COM:VPC if you want other opinions. If it turns out that Commons cannot accept this file, then there is an option to upload keep it local on English Wikipedia under the license {{PD-ineligible-USonly}} (which is sort of a local type of PD for English Wikipedia use only), but it would be better to make sure Commons cannot accept this first. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:15, 16 July 2021 (UTC)
- Hi Marchjuly. Many thanks for your thorough explanation, and my apologies for not fully understanding NFCC. I appreciate the opportunity to become more acquainted with this.
You are correct, the file is used in {{Rail-interchange/doc/CN}}, hence the transclusions.
I too believe that File:Guangzhou Metro icon.svg is well below c:COM:TOO China. The file was, however, deleted on Commons following this poorly argued and poorly attended bulk deletion request.
Tim Wu uploaded it locally on the Chinese Wikipedia, xiexie ni, Tim, from where I took the file and converted it. Tim has, I now see, filed a request for undeletion on Commons (permalink).
But until that is settled, should I tag the local file with {{PD-ineligible-USonly}}?
Again, thanks for your help. Best, Sam Sailor 02:09, 17 July 2021 (UTC)- Hi Sam, thanks for uploading the logo to English Wikipedia. When I tried to use {{PD-ineligible-USonly}} in Chinese Wikipedia, the bot is still removing the file from other pages, I don't know whether the same thing will happen in enwp. An admin replace it with the {{Non-free logo}} then, so I hope the admins in Commons can restore the file since it's below COM:TOO China. It would be great if you can comment on the undeletion page. 谢谢!--Tim Wu (talk) 02:48, 17 July 2021 (UTC)
- @TimWu007: Responded there, thanks again. Best, Sam Sailor 07:06, 17 July 2021 (UTC)
- Hi Sam, the logos were restored on Commons, and the local file can be deleted. Thank you again for your contribution! Tim Wu (talk) 07:38, 4 August 2021 (UTC)
- @TimWu007: Responded there, thanks again. Best, Sam Sailor 07:06, 17 July 2021 (UTC)
- @Sam Sailor: I noticed that the a Commons file of the same logo had been previously discussed and deleted only after I posted above. If it turns out that the consensus on Commons is that the file is too complex to be PD in China, then it should be OK to relicense as "PD-ineligible-USonly" for local use on English Wikipedia. I have no idea what the image use policy is for Chinese Wikipedia, but it would seem that a copyright license specific to the US would not, in principle, be usable on Chinese Wikipedia; moreover, the template wouldn't work on Chinese Wikipedia anyway since it was created for use on English Wikipedia. If you want other opinions on whether this would be PD in the US, you can ask at either WP:MCQ or WT:NFCC, but I'm pretty sure it should be OK to relicense as such. The syntax you want to use for the license is
{{PD-ineligible-USonly|China}}
. Whether you use "China" or "People's Republic of China" shouldn't matter. You should also convert the non-free use rationale to the template {{Information}}; if you only change the copyright license and leave the non-free use rationale as is, a bot will probably flag the file for a license review by adding {{Wrong license}} and the file may still be treated as non-free content. You can also add the template {{Trademark}} as well if you want. If the Commons file is restored, a local version of the same file is probably not needed and can be tagged for speedy deletion per WP:F8. -- Marchjuly (talk) 11:02, 17 July 2021 (UTC)- Done, hopefully correct, thank you for your help. Best, Sam Sailor 17:55, 17 July 2021 (UTC)

New Page Patrol newsletter September 2021
Hello Sam Sailor,
Please join this discussion - there is increase in the abuse of Wikipedia and its processes by POV pushers, Paid Editors, and by holders of various user rights including Autopatrolled. Even our review systems themselves at AfC and NPR have been infiltrated. The good news is that detection is improving, but the downside is that it creates the need for a huge clean up - which of course adds to backlogs.
Copyright violations are also a serious issue. Most non-regular contributors do not understand why, and most of our Reviewers are not experts on copyright law - and can't be expected to be, but there is excellent, easy-to-follow advice on COPYVIO detection here.
At the time of the last newsletter (#25, December 2020) the backlog was only just over 2,000 articles. New Page Review is an official system. It's the only firewall against the inclusion of new, improper pages.
There are currently 706 New Page Reviewers plus a further 1,080 admins, but as much as nearly 90% of the patrolling is still being done by around only the 20 or so most regular patrollers.
If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process or its software.
Various awards are due to be allocated by the end of the year and barnstars are overdue. If you would like to manage this, please let us know. Indeed, if you are interested in coordinating NPR, it does not involve much time and the tasks are described here.
To opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself here. Sent to 827 users. 04:32, 16 September 2021 (UTC)
