WikiCup 2016: Game On!

We are about to enter the second week of the 2016 WikiCup. The most recent player to sign up brings the current total to 101 contestants. Signups close on 5 February. If you’re interested, you can join this year's WikiCup here.

We are aware that in some areas the scoring bot’s numbers are a little bit off (i.e., overly generous) and are working to have that corrected as soon as possible.--MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:03, 7 January 2016 (UTC)

Invite to an edit-a-thon at the Loft Literary Center

The Loft Literary Center edit-a-thon
  • Date: Thursday, February 11, 2016, 6–8pm
  • Location: Loft Literary Center, 1011 S Washington Ave, Room 203, Minneapolis
  • Sponsor: The Loft Literary Center
Hello Ruby2010! You are invited to attend an edit-a-thon at the Loft Literary Center which will be held on Thursday, February 11, 2016. This editing event is dedicated to improving and increasing the presence of cultural, historic, and artistic information on Wikipedia pertaining to artists from marginalized communities. Please bring a laptop. Refreshments will be provided.
We have also recently formed a user group for Minnesota editors. If you would like to join, please add your name to our page on meta. Thank you, gobonobo + c 23:47, 6 February 2016 (UTC)

Ruby2010, I wanted to remind you that you opened this review on January 18, and haven't yet returned to it. Please let me know if you won't be returning, so I can put it back into the reviewing pool, though I hope you will be able to return to it soon. Many thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 17:03, 8 February 2016 (UTC)

Thanks, BlueMoonset, I do intend to complete the review. I had an accident with my laptop so my on-wiki time has lately been a bit limited, unfortunately! I'll add a note to the review. Ruby 2010/2013 14:04, 10 February 2016 (UTC)

Interview request

Hey Ruby, long time no see! I apologize for popping out of the blue to ask a sort of odd request, but I'm writing my MA thesis on Wikipedia, fandom, and canon. I was wondering if I could ask you a few (~10) questions about how fans aggregate and define "canon" on Wikipedia in regards to cultural media objects (e.g. TV shows, movies)? You're under no obligation to say yes, but I just thought I'd ask!--Gen. Quon (Talk) 22:04, 12 February 2016 (UTC)

Sure, Gen. Quon, I'm not sure how helpful my answers would be, but I'd be happy to help out if you're still looking for interviewees! Ruby 2010/2013 19:38, 16 February 2016 (UTC)
Any and all answers are much appreciated. Here are the questions:
  • 1) When did you start editing Wikipedia and why?
  • 2) Does Wikipedia play a big part in your life/identity?
  • 3) What initially drew you to the articles that you edit?
  • 4) Why do you feel the desire to collect disparate info and then collect it into one (or more) article?
  • 5) What does the term ‘canon’ mean to you?
  • 6) When you’re making an article, is it important to ‘stick to canon’, or use only legitimate, canonical sources?
  • 7) In your opinion, what determines canon (or, “who has the final say”)?
  • 8) Do some editors of pop culture articles guard their articles, (or “prevent the canon from being tainted”)?
  • 9) If there’s an edit war and you want to get involved, generally, how do you determine what side to choose?
  • 10) In your opinion, do certain Wikipedia editors have more power than others? If yes, how so?
  • 11) How do you gain the trust of other editors?
  • 12) How does an editor gain expertise/become an “expert” in a specific subject?
Thanks!--Gen. Quon (Talk) 22:52, 16 February 2016 (UTC)
Thanks so much! You answers are very helpful!--Gen. Quon (Talk) 22:28, 27 February 2016 (UTC)

DYK

Hi: Note that at Template:Did you know nominations/Princess Feodora of Saxe-Meiningen, a QPQ review still appears to need to be performed for the nomination to move forward. Just a reminder, because it's going on three weeks, and nominations that sit for too long can be rejected. North America1000 07:02, 14 February 2016 (UTC)

Done – thanks for the reminder! Ruby 2010/2013 19:36, 16 February 2016 (UTC)

Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Princess Charlotte of Prussia you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have during this period. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of Sotakeit -- Sotakeit (talk) 15:01, 25 February 2016 (UTC)

The article Princess Charlotte of Prussia you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold . The article is close to meeting the good article criteria, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needing to be addressed. If these are fixed within 7 days, the article will pass; otherwise it may fail. See Talk:Princess Charlotte of Prussia for things which need to be addressed. One of Adam Cuerden’s several quality restorations during round 1

That's it, the first round is done, sign-ups are closed and we're into round 2. Forty-seven competitors move into this round (a bit shy of the expected 64), and we are roughly broken into eight groups of six. Twenty-two Good Articles were submitted, including three by Connecticut Cyclonebiskit (submissions), and two each by Denmark MPJ-DK (submissions), Zanzibar Hurricanehink (submissions), Florida 12george1 (submissions), and New South Wales Cas Liber (submissions). Twenty-one Featured Pictures were claimed, including 17 by There's always time for skeletons Adam Cuerden (submissions) (the Round 1 high scorer). Thirty-one contestants saw their DYKs appear on the main page, with a commanding lead (28) by Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions). Twenty-nine participants conducted GA reviews with Lancashire J Milburn (submissions) completing nine.

If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. WikiCup 2016 March newsletter (update)

Along with getting the year wrong in the newsletter that went out earlier this week, we did not mention (as the bot did not report) that New South Wales Cas Liber (submissions) claimed the first Featured Article Persoonia terminalis of the 2016 Wikicup. Hi, I just finished reviewing your Natasha Wightman DYK nomination, and there's still one small sourcing problem in the article that should be fixed before I can pass the nomination. Please read my comments on the nomination and address the issue, and then I will finish the review. Thanks, G S Palmer (talkcontribs) 14:55, 12 March 2016 (UTC)

Thanks, I have responded there. Ruby 2010/2013 17:19, 13 March 2016 (UTC)
