Thank you for understanding my hook exactly as I meant it, - that's so unusual! - My story today is about a man who played jazz when it was banned by the Nazis, - you can listen to how they played it later. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:39, 17 September 2024 (UTC)

Thank you again, - my story today about one of the greatest users I had the honour to meet here, mentioned in my edit notice. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:21, 19 September 2024 (UTC)

To be fair, I think you could make these things go smoother by being more accommodating of suggestions from reviewers. 11 editors invested 9 days arguing over this. It didn't need to be that complicated. RoySmith (talk) 20:37, 19 September 2024 (UTC)
I agree completely that it should not be complicated. The original hook could have been modified a bit, instead of struck. Next time I'll call you for mediation sooner, if there is a next time that is. I really try to avoid DYK but with a brandnew article about a woman musician, I failed to resist the temptation to tell the world about her. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:50, 19 September 2024 (UTC)
Ach, lieben Christen, seid getrost, BWV 114, is one of the pieces in my topic of this year. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:52, 22 September 2024 (UTC)
Thank you today for Arthur O. Austin, introduced: "Have you ever listened to a radio broadcast or admired the pretty blinking lights on a radio transmitter tower? Have you ever wondered how aircraft survive being hit by lightning? Has it ever struck you as odd that every electrical appliance you buy has a label warning you about the dangers of electrocution if you get it wet, but the high-tension lines that bring power to your house do just fine outside in the rain and snow? If so, you'll want to read this article to find out how some guy you've probably never heard of was a big part of making all that work." - Yes! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:56, 23 September 2024 (UTC)
My story today features a pic I took from my position in the choir, I can also offer varied delightful music, some from Venice, also with pics I took, - note the rose in the clarinet ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:36, 25 September 2024 (UTC)
Thank you for Margrit Waltz. - BWV 130 on the same page, - OTD, a process much easier than DYK. --

Blue Mountain Pottery

Hi, thanks again for your comments on the Blue Mountain Pottery article. Apologies for not responding right away; had some stuff going on at work, plus family commitments, that took up my time. That darn "Real Life" thing. :) Mr Serjeant Buzfuz (talk) 13:28, 3 October 2024 (UTC)

I am disturbed that you are requiring that other editors violate copyright in this GA review by demanding that someone sends you a copy of references used. When did consensus change to prohibit use of offline sources?Nigel Ish (talk) 18:54, 4 October 2024 (UTC)

I'm not prohibiting the use of offline sources. I just need to verify the sources per WP:GAN/I#R3 and since I don't have direct access to them, I'm asking for a copy to base my review on, as is commonly used at WP:FAC for souce spot-checks. Copyright has always recognized reviews as a fair use. RoySmith (talk) 19:09, 4 October 2024 (UTC)

Hi, thank you for reviewing the DYK.

Earwig report says Violation unlikely, 25% similarity. Is there a specific threshhold I should be trying to get under? Also wouldn't a US published document be public domain and therefore copyright-unviolatable?

I'm not trying to be difficult or argumentative here, I just want to better understand how this works.

DarthCloakedGuy (talk) 19:20, 14 October 2024 (UTC)

No problem, and thanks for the query. I think of the percentage number Earwig gives you as just a vague hint. In some ways I wish it didn't give that number because it makes it too easy to focus on. What I typically do is look for the red-highlighted parts and if I see a couple in a row, I look at the original to see how the unhighlighted parts in between match. Often, it all just sort of runs together. In general, if you can look at a passage and say, "Yeah, that came from this paragraph in the source, and they just changed a few words around", that's close paraphrasing.
The passage that stuck out to me was

In January and March 2008, Ascent Goal Investments Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of China Sonangol International Limited, purchased a total 74% ownership stake in Artfield. Ascent named three new executive directors to Artfield: Lo Fong Hung and her husband Wang Xiangfei, and Kwan Man Fai

vs

In January 2008, Ascent Goal Investments Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of China Sonangol International Limited, agreed to buy 56.7 percent of Artfield.105 By March 2008, Ascent had acquired 74.42 percent of Artfield’s shares and had named three new executive directors to the company-- Lo Fong Hung, Wang Xiangfei, and Kwan Man Fai

As these things go, this isn't terrible (and for sure, some of it is the names of companies and people which are always going to be unchanged), but it could be better. Let me suggest:

Artfield was taken over in early 2008 by Ascent Goal Investments Limited. By March, Ascent (a subsidiary of China Sonagol International) had purchased 74% of Artfield and installed three new executive directors. Lo Fong Hung was named chairperson and managing director. Lo's husband, Wang Xaigfei and Kwan Man Fai were also named to the board.

As I write that, I realize it's really not terribly different from what you had, so maybe I was just being overly picky, but I think it's a little better. RoySmith (talk) 20:35, 14 October 2024 (UTC)
Either way it flows way better. I have a tendency to try to cram too much information into too few sentences, and this resolves that. Do you mind if I just copy this straight in?
DarthCloakedGuy (talk) 10:56, 16 October 2024 (UTC)
Please do. RoySmith-Mobile (talk) 13:33, 16 October 2024 (UTC)
Okay. Pretty much the only things the copyvio detector thingie are picking up now are names, which I think means everything is aboveboard now. Care to reassess? Please and thank you.

The third-rail tip pic revisited

Roy,

Regarding this discussion, I have been able to get to my DSLR raw files of that image and uploaded one of them (rare for me, I actually overwrote the original because a) it was undeniably subpar and b) I really didn't feel like copying over the entire info text).

What do you think now? I have pretty much done all the work I felt necessary on the article and will be nominating it at FAC soon. Daniel Case (talk) 18:27, 19 October 2024 (UTC)

That one really shows what it's like. Excellent! RoySmith (talk) 20:15, 19 October 2024 (UTC)
Thanks! Daniel Case (talk) 01:40, 20 October 2024 (UTC)
I trust the acquisition of this image was fully compliant with all OSHA and FRA safety regulations :-) RoySmith (talk) 02:19, 20 October 2024 (UTC)

DYK for Elias Karmon

On 21 October 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Elias Karmon, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Mr. Bronx was not from the Bronx? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Elias Karmon. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Elias Karmon), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Chinasrise SPI question

Hello, thank you for your help and pointers at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Chinasrise—as it seems I'm continuing to encounter instances, should I be adding them to the investigations page? Or given the remarks in the archive, should I desist in treating this as a sockpuppetry situation until something changes? It really does seem like something odd is going on, and it's fairly disruptive. Remsense ‥  01:12, 21 October 2024 (UTC)

At this point, I don't have a good feel for what's going on, so yes, it would be useful to add additional accounts as you find them. Perhaps with enough examples, something will start to make sense. RoySmith (talk) 01:14, 21 October 2024 (UTC)
Thanks! And yes, per your point I now get why diffs here are as necessary as they are—I'll be properly rigorous with them from now on. Remsense ‥  01:16, 21 October 2024 (UTC)

We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,

WMF Research Team

Incredibly minor thing to start a talk over, but ...

... you made a typo in your ANI close, courtesy banking, which I've found amusing to consider what that could mean. – 2804:F1...DE:554A (talk) 23:35, 25 October 2024 (UTC)

Thanks for the note. Fixed. RoySmith (talk) 23:36, 25 October 2024 (UTC)
I once made a typo in the edit summary of a mass delete, so it got repeated in the deletion log like 300 times and there was nothing I could do about it. Just Step Sideways from this world ..... today 23:42, 25 October 2024 (UTC)
