To friends of Boris: bad news
[edit]I'm sorry to have to report the death of Boris, aka Raymond. I have an email from his son, which he wanted shared here so that people who had known him on-wiki would know: I'm sorry to come to you with bad news. My dad had a massive stroke biking home from work on Tuesday, and was pronounced brain dead on Wednesday evening. In a final act of generosity, he donated his organs to save the lives of four other people. Boris was a good person, and I'll miss him William M. Connolley (talk) 21:43, 18 November 2018 (UTC)

- I think we have just collectively violated OUTING rule #2375, but I'm sorry he is no longer with us. I cherished the hope he would one day re-assume his admin bit. For those not aware, his username is tribute to Soviet propaganda poster. EdJohnston (talk) 22:39, 18 November 2018 (UTC)
- This is Boris's/Ray's son. Thank you to all of you for your well wishes. I know my dad spent a lot of time working (and playing, for that matter) on Wikipedia with all of you. I'll be checking this page for the next few weeks, and would welcome any memories or stories you have to share either here or on the memorial page. No problem to link to the obit, which is posted but not quite finished while we wait for the funeral director to upload a photo of him. Sarritt (talk) 00:53, 19 November 2018 (UTC)

- A day after the shock: I hope he would have liked this little memorial. Sarritt, I hope you like it. I "met" you father in a rough situation - we lost a friend (not to death ...) - and as you can see in the dialogue above (which we continued once a year), he was the one to bring me back to serenity. Many of us trusted him to be an arbitrator in the true sense. - There are many other stories on this page alone. - Best wishes to you and your family, and keep living that spirit. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:06, 19 November 2018 (UTC)

- I first knew of Ray as Dr. Arritt, where he was one of my Intro to Meteorology professors. I was fortunate to continue with meteorology into grad school, and Ray was gracious enough to serve on my committee and to allow me to TA for said Intro to Meteorology course. His guidance in improving and motivating my writing and teaching will forever be appreciated. And his sense of humor, as displayed on this site, shone through in person as well. My thoughts are heavy with his family, friends, colleagues, and students. (@Sarritt: I believe we also had some brief business as, erm, Counter-Strike teammates back in high school. - I've been putting off writing anything here, because I don't know what to say. Ray was one of my favorite people, which is an odd thing to say about someone whom I never met in person and only interacted with in the context of this website. He was smart, insightful, humane, and funny, and most of all I valued his sense of perspective, which is in notoriously short supply in these parts.
We carried on an intermittent email correspondence over the years, very little of which had to do directly with Wikipedia. Mostly we discussed our families, life, academic politics, music, and the experience of editing Wikipedia as a professional academic. Our chats had wound down over the past few years as we both increasingly withdrew from this website, but just looking back through my email archives today at our conversations brought a smile to my face again and again. We had abstract plans to meet up for a beer sometime, somewhere.
Obviously, my sense of loss is trivial compared to what his family must be experiencing. The only thing I can say is that Ray made this website better; people are, in aggregate, better informed about the world because of his contributions here. As an educator, I know that was his primary motivation for spending his time here. Ray also touched a lot of people's lives here, and he'll be greatly missed. I'm glad to have known him. - Very saddened to hear this news. I remember early in my Wikipedia career, when SBHB was contributing under his own name and helping to deal with people pushing pseudoscience. Raymond has made a substantial contribution and to the world at large, for which we can all be grateful and from which we can take inspiration. Sarritt, I express my condolences to you and to the rest of Raymond's family. I feel proud to have known him, if only through Wikipedia, and hope to have learned from him. I also express my thanks to IntoThinAir, who has started an article on Professor Raymond Arritt. Ray's Rules
[edit]This list was sent to me by SBHB's widow, who said "they are worth sharing and help explain his kind and generous nature." Drmies (talk) 03:37, 11 December 2018 (UTC)
- You and your problems are not the most important thing in the world.
- Choose your battles. Yield when it doesn’t matter, and stand your ground when it does.
- Keep a thick skin. Don’t let criticism discourage you. Instead, let it teach you.
- You learn more from listening than from talking. “A good listener is not only popular everywhere, but after a while he gets to know something.” (Wilson Mizner)
- Don’t waste your time arguing with an idiot.
- Give other people the same respect that you would want from them. (Matthew 7:12)
- The surest way to drive yourself crazy is to compare yourself to other people.
- Take the high road, no matter what the other person does. It will benefit you in the long run. (Romans 12:20)
- Don’t take yourself too seriously: “We share 99% of our genes with mice, and we even have the genes that could make a tail.” (Dr. Jane Rogers, Human Sequencing and Mapping Project Manager, Sanger Institute); “The graveyards are full of indispensable men.” (Charles de Gaulle)
- The most important thing is to be able to look yourself in the mirror. “There comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but one must take it because it’s right.” (Martin Luther King, Jr.)
- Thanks for sharing these. A little context for the curious: my dad quietly kept these rules in his office--we're not sure when he first wrote them, but they were a little code of conduct he kept for himself. He didn't ever mention explicitly that he had written them or what they were for, but they were instantly familiar when we found them. Not only in how how accurately they described how he lived, but in the sorts of advice he'd give in conversation. The one about not comparing yourself to others is one that he'd need to remind me of frequently, and after his passing I feel a much deeper understanding of what he meant. "It's kind of neat: I have, like, .002 percent of a Nobel prize now"?

Inaugural presentation of a long-overdue award
[edit]Global warming and climate change barnstar | ||
For your many years of tireless, kind, and thoughtful climate editing, may we present you, Boris, with the first-ever Global Warming and Climate Change Barnstar. Apologies I didn't think of this a long time ago, for it is long overdue. Hopefully the new editors interested in the topic area will be inspired by the footprints you left on the sands of our talk page archives. NewsAndEventsGuy (talk) 16:19, 15 August 2019 (UTC) |
I thought of you today
[edit]...when I discovered you are among the "Wikipedians who cannot be trout-slapped because they are already fish". You are missed, — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 03:32, 29 August 2019 (UTC)

I heard Elvis (C., not P.) on the radio this morning and thought of you, which led me to look through some of our old email threads. I'm sorry that we never got together for that beer we talked about, but I thought we had more time. I don't pretend to know What Comes Next, but I hope that somewhere you're getting slide-guitar lessons from Elmore James. You're missed down here. MastCell Talk 17:08, 14 September 2021 (UTC)
I mentioned you in a little memorial to missed dear friends, with climate change as today's featured article, on reformation day. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:31, 31 October 2021 (UTC)
Always precious
[edit]Ten years ago, you were found precious. You are remembered, and will be. The 2022 Halloween treat is a cat I met. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:55, 31 October 2022 (UTC)
