Sleeping Dogs

Hey man, I'm sorry for any incoveniences. Would you like to help me organize the Sleeping Dogs (video game) article? There's a lot to do left, like the front section, development and reception sections. But I'm positive that the article will be perfect, if not excellent by the end of the day. This is a very long article that looks, from a glance, ready for a GAN comb-through. If you're asking me if I'd like to contribute to that GAN, then the answer is no—I'm barely active, already have a very lengthy review to do, of Bikini, and video game articles are stylistically technical and outside of my area of expertise, however many of them I play. Sorry to bother you again. Can you please explain this comment - "The costume shocked the conservative Indian audience... Do you mean that it shocked the conservative members of the audience, or that the Indian audience was so conservative that it shocked a conservative audience? Format this sentence with one of these signal words to make this distinction clearer." I am having difficulty addressing this, because I didn't understand what you meant. No worries. This sentence troubled me because what the "conservative" in "conservative Indian audience" refers to is ambiguous, in my opinion. As I see it you can read this sentence one of two ways: the entire audience for the movie was so conservative that it found the content of the film shocking; and that it is only certain members of the audience, of conservative social virtues, who found it shocking. To make this clearer, I suggested substituting "a" for "the" in the first case, so that the sentence reads "...a conservative Indian audience", or in the second case placing "members of the" between "conservative" and "Indian" in the sentence. Either of these structures would clear up the ambiguity. I would have made this change , but I am myself unsure which of these meanings is the correct one, which is why I left this particular wording fix to you. ResMar 04:20, 20 June 2014 (UTC)

Only semi-active, still. Mauna Loa and Shield volcano could use attention (Hawaiian Volcano Observatory too maybe eventually), but I'm still sort of in that stage where I'm not sure I want to commit to any one project. Been thinking about getting out of volcanoes for a bit and working on some other sorts of articles. I found Jacob Little to be a refreshing experience...but haven't yet found something similarly interesting to try my hand at. ResMar 02:44, 25 June 2014 (UTC)

My activity level has flatlined (look how late my response is!), and classes start again quite soon. Now that Wikipedia's rendered my research and writing skills rock solid I find myself focusing more on reading books and working on extracurricular projects more closely related to my field of study then on editing encyclopedic articles on volcanoes I'll probably won't see in the next decade, if ever. Mauna Loa's unfinished state nags at me, but...all the fun (ae. the geology) is already written and it's down to combing through thinly placed sources on human history, recreation, and ecology, which I just can't get around to doing. To be honest I've been focusing more on my personal studies, and less on Wikipedia. I still tidy things here or there, but I don't actively edit, and if I ever do in the future I think I'll focus on "discovered" articles more along the lines of Jacob Little. ResMar 05:28, 22 August 2014 (UTC)

WikiProject Good articles Future GAN Backlog Drive

Hello everyone! Hope you've all been having a great summer!

TheQ Editor recently proposed the idea of having another Backlog Drive in either September/October or November/December of this year. For those of you who have participated in the past two drives you know I was the one who organized them, however, come September, this will be my most important year in school so I will not be able to coordinate this drive (if it happens). TheQ Editor has volunteered to be a coordinator for the drive. If any of you would like to co-coordinator, please notify TheQ Editor on his talk page.

If you would be interested in participating in a Backlog Drive sometime before the end of this year, please notify TheQ Editor. Also, make sure to specify what month(s) work best for you.

At the time this message was sent out, the backlog was at 520 nominations. Since May, the backlog has been steadily increasing and we are currently near an all time high. Even though the backlog will not disappear over one drive, this drive can lead to several others which will (hopefully) lead to the day where there is no longer a backlog.

As always, the more participants, the better, and everyone is encouraged to participate!

GA Cup

Hello everyone! We hope you have all been having a great summer!

As we all know, the recent GAN Backlog Drives have not had any big impact on the backlog. Because of that, me (Dom497), Figureskatingfan, and TheQ Editor have worked on an idea that could possibly finally put a dent into the massive backlog. Now, I will admit, the idea isn't entirely ours as we have took the general idea of the WikiCup and brought it over to WikiProject Good Articles. But anyways, here's what we have in mind:

For all of you that do not know what the WikiCup is, it is an annual competition between several editors to see who can get the most Good Articles, Featured Article's, Did You Know's, etc. Based of this, we propose to you the GA Cup. This competition will only focus on reviewing Good articles.

For more info on the proposal, click here. As a FYI, the proposal page is not what the final product will look like (if you do go ahead with this idea). It will look very similar to WikiCup's page(s).

The discussion for the proposal will take place here. Please let us know if you are interested, have any concerns, things to consider, etc.

WikiProject Good Articles - GA Cup


WikiProject Good articles is holding a new competition, the GA Cup, from October 1, 2014 - March 28, 2015. The Cup will be based on reviewing Good article nominations; for each review, points will be awarded with bonuses for older nominations, longer articles and comprehensive reviews. All participants will start off in one group and the highest scoring participants will go through to the second round. At the moment six rounds are planned, but this may change based on participant numbers.

Some of you may ask: what is the purpose for a competition of this type? Currently, there is a backlog of about 500 unreviewed Good article nominations, almost an all time high. It is our hope that we can decrease the backlog in a fun way, through friendly competition.

Everyone is welcome to join; new and old editors! Sign-ups will be open until October 15, 2014 so sign-up now!

Sleeping Dogs at FAC

How's it going Mario? Remember when I asked you if you could help with Sleeping Dogs? I totally understand that you weren't available at the time, but since then the article has been really improved. In fact, I nominated it to FA alongside Czar and Tezero five days ago. The only problem is a lot of the reviewers are complaining about the article's prose, and Tezero and Czar don't have much time in their hands to fix all the issues the reviewers raised. If I was really good at writing proses, the article would have already passed, but I have only been in the site for over four months, so I'm not that good yet. Is there anyway that you could copy edit the article? Even just some sections would be extremely helpful. I contacted magioladis and some other editors about this, but I'm not sure if they're available too. Your help is really appreciated. Thank you. URDNEXT (talk) 23:43, 24 September 2014 (UTC)

Making a clickable image

Hi, I'm an admin over at en.wb and, for a while, I've been wanting to create a clickable map for one of the books I've been developing over several years. I saw Template:Volcanic Eruption Map and was quite impressed. Are there any help pages anywhere for creating such maps? The map I want exists but my problem is making it clickable. Any links would be appreciated. As I'm not very active here at en.wikipedia it would be useful if you left any reply on my talk page (here or wb). A quick web search brings me to this article indicating that the sale offer went nowhere, and this one indicating some plans being made for the future. As it stands, the castle is no longer for sale. Signpost index

I have a present for you. :) The code {{#invoke:Signpost|tag|contests}} now produces the following:

Don't start using that anywhere just yet, as the module is likely to change a lot as I add more features to it. For now, it would be best to make sure that Module:Signpost/index has all the proper tags. I've tried to fill in the tags as best I can automatically, but there are still tags missing, and tags that are erroneous. Probably the best strategy now would be to look through it to see if there are any tags that are obviously missing and that could be filled in by text matching the title fields, and if there any tags that consistently produce false positives. I can then fix them in the Python script that I generated the data from, and fix those as best I can automatically. After that, we can go through and put the finishing touches to the data manually. I've posted the Python dictionary I used to generate the tags at Module:Signpost/index/doc, so you can make fixes to it there if you want. Best — Mr. Stradivarius ♪ talk ♪ 15:34, 1 March 2015 (UTC)

I would say seven articles on porn constitutes a "thing", yes. ;) And about the meta-tags, yes, that's right. @Mr. Stradivarius: It sounds like this may be a process that we should open the floor to the community on, as manually coming up with a good list of all of the important things that have happened in 10 years is borderline impossible. After consultation we can prune the list as needed, remove the inevitable doubled entries, etc. etc.

We could do that, I suppose, but all it really needs is for a few people to look through the list and check that there are no glaring errors or omissions. The omissions should be pretty easy to spot from the article titles - it's just that there's about 4000 of them... @Mr. Stradivarius: On the topic of information extraction: can you also add subheadings and bolded briefs to the extractions? See for instance Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2011-05-16/News and notes. These ran in the News and notes, In the news/In the media/Wikipedia in the news consistently for their entire span, and for Technology reports for most of its span. ResMar 16:56, 1 March 2015 (UTC)

@Mr. Stradivarius: I've begun the process of manually adding tags to the taglist via sweeping the article titles. I've also thought some about how this tagging effort would be implemented. I think one way to do it would be have a bot come in and automatically wrap stories and headers in a {{story}} template of some sort, autofilling script-generated tags and leaving a flag on to indicate that it's only been bot-generated and not manually combed yet. Tags will be added individually: tag1, tag2, and so on. There needs to be some capacity for telling a user that they are adding a tag which does not exist in the taglist if they are doing so, either through the template (via Lua) or elsewhere (via user script); and then some capacity for allowing them to easily add that tag to the list if they chose to do so.
Or maybe we can dodge having to add anything to the old articles at all by editing entry pages instead? What are your thoughts? ResMar 06:03, 3 March 2015 (UTC)
@Mr. Stradivarius: I've made progress in the manual title-sweep tagging and am more than half-way to 2005. I realized that all this thinking about how the tags will be implemented is too much too soon because we need to figure out how they'll be generated, indexed, and recorded first. Stack Exchange's way of doing it is pretty nice, yes. However, that would require us to write the code in JavaScript and add it as a default gadget or as a Mediawiki extension, which is a little bit farther than I would be willing to go in my spare time, I think. Part of that is that to do it properly it would need to be implemented as a MediaWiki extension with a database, rather than storing the data in a Lua module, and that would take me quite a bit of time as I don't really have much prior PHP, JS or extension-coding experience. Plus Mediawiki extensions have to be rigorously reviewed before they can be deployed on Wikimedia sites. With Lua it would be easy enough to generate a list of all tags, but it wouldn't be dynamic, as the content has to be fixed at the time the page is rendered. Having said that, making a user script to edit tags directly from article pages probably wouldn't be all that hard. — Mr. Stradivarius ♪ talk ♪ 01:33, 9 March 2015 (UTC)

@Mr. Stradivarius: I have another Lua request. Can you write a Lua module that, given a timestamp and a page title, returns a revision timestamped to that date? This is re the second part of what I described to you earlier: with a single Find-Replace operation I was able to introduce a nice experimental "Historical view" into an old Signpost article. Sorry, that's not possible to do inside Lua, as Lua doesn't have access to page histories. There is no function available in Scribunto to perform the most important step, finding the revision ID from the page and the timestamp. — Mr. Stradivarius ♪ talk ♪ 04:44, 9 March 2015 (UTC)

@Abchave1: It was "taken down", but in the sense that it was taken downpage—the Suggestions page is ordered chronologically and you (somewhat mysteriously, I must say) posted your request at the top of the page. Indeed, if I had not seen the change in the Signpost IRC stream it's quite likely we would not have noticed the message at all (you've also done that again here).
The actual suggestion still stands. No comment yet on whether or not it will be run, we'll look into it for the next issue—current focus is on getting the issue due end-of-today out the door. Thanks for your suggestion, ResMar 18:05, 4 March 2015 (UTC)

@Casliber: Ok, looks good so far. You need to fill it out more lengthwise though. Some suggestions: what the winning submissions were like in the early iterations, more on what Danny's impetus was for moving the contest theme to featured content the third round (and maybe more on the early rationale if you can find it), what Moreschi's inspiration was, who the winners were, what their submissions were, what Danny had to say about the winners, maybe a little more on the Veropedia project if you think it's appropriate.
With that established I'd really want to see your rationale for reviving the contest: I strongly agree with your statement as to FA esoterica (I wrote an essay in the Signpost with reference to this issue a long time ago). You're one of en-wiki's weightiest content contributors so seeing your opinion on this topic would be very, very interesting to our readers.
From that standpoint you can present why you think that the core contest is a good way of addressing this issue and convince the readers that they, too, should sign up for the effort.
With some editing and some moving around this could be included as a blurb in News and notes, but I think we'd much rather see you expand it somewhat and make a full essay out of it, which would have much more of an impact. However, there is a bit of time sensitivity, as your contest is already underway!

The Signpost wiki

As I've been putting together the tags index for the Signpost articles, of necessity I've been thinking of the different ways that this could be achieved. One of the first things that I thought of was, could we do this with categories? Using categories is the usual way to tag articles on-wiki, of course, but I rejected that idea because we have WP:CFD and category policies that mean we can't just add Signpost articles to things like Category:Finance. But just now it's hit me - and I don't know why I didn't think of it before - how about moving the Signpost to a new wiki? If we do everything on a new wiki we can use HotCat as our tagging userscript and categories as our "tags", all within a very well-tested and well-understood framework. And if we are separate from the English Wikipedia it will be a lot easier to get the WMF to enable extensions that it won't do here because it would cause too high a server load. In particular I'm thinking of DynamicPageList, which can generate arbitrary lists of pages based on things like category membership. That would take care of making the lists of articles that Module:Signpost has been aiming to do, particularly if we can get the version enabled that interfaces with Lua. We could also do other cool stuff, like have a "Newsdesk" namespace, and be able to track changes to all Signpost articles through Special:RecentChanges. And if you think about it, it doesn't really make sense for the Signpost to be on enwiki - it has covered other WMF activity from near its inception, and I suspect it has only remained on enwiki through inertia. One problem: seeing as you can't yet transclude templates across wikis, you wouldn't be able list Signpost articles directly in an enwiki discussion using a template. You would have to link to a Signpost-wiki page that did that. I hear that cross-wiki transclusion is a planned MediaWiki feature, but no-one seems to be in a hurry to get round to implementing it. I don't think there's enough Signpost to the Signpost to justify hosting it on an entire other wiki—it's true that if the project were remade in its current form today we'd host it at Meta, but moving to another wiki is an enormous technical challenge without much to gain from it! Besides, we're part of the en-wiki historical lore at this point. I don't think we need categories at all: isn't it as simple as including <!-- MANUAL TAGS: Incubator, Google --> in the page, then having the scraper dump these into the Lua module periodically? I discovered Wikiversity less than 2 years ago accidentally while looking for material to copy and distribute to students in a college level physics course I was teaching. Now I am approaching the point where an acceptable amount of course materials open source and to the point where Wikipedia/Wikiversity does most of the teaching.

The key I believe is testing: You can learn almost anything from the internet already. The trick is to get open source testbanks developed to the point where people can use them to demonstrate proficiency.

At the moment, testbanks are generally kept as secrets-- it is considered unethical for professors to post testbanks that they purchased or obtained because the students purchased a textbook. But if we could make the testbank REALLY BIG, it could be open source and students would learn the material just by studying for the exams. If that sounds like a radical idea, it is how most states in the USA decide whether a person knows the rules of the road well enough to take a driving test.

I haven't counted the questions, but here are some of the testbanks I have assembled so far:

When fully developed, these test banks could offer self learners the opportunity to obtain college credit in some college courses at virtually zero cost to the taxpayer or student.

Please understand that we are not talking about the entire education of a college student. But those introductory "100"" level courses are to a large extent fact-based. Also suitable to this test-bank approach are the non-lab components of first and second year science and math courses. Above that level, the testbank approach would form smaller components of the course. "Automating" the distribution of information and verification of student proficiency frees instructors' time to focus on higher level teaching.

Other Wikimedia projects and cross-wiki editing

I have been editing Wikipedia for over ten years, and I have been fairly heavily involved in cross-wiki editing for most of that time. I am an administrator at English Wikipedia, Wiktionary, and Wikiquote (and a bureaucrat at Wikiquote), and have a healthy dose of projects at English and French Wikisource. I see all of these projects as feeding into each other. For example, one of the major projects that I have undertaken at Wikiquote is incorporating public-domain books of quotations in Wikiquote page. In so doing, I have come across collections that quote from authors for whom Wikipedia articles are missing or under-served, and have created or expanded the Wikipedia articles in the course of developing the scope of the quote page. Furthermore, in order to feed these efforts, I have imported some substantial public-domain books of quotations into Wikisource. Similarly, I have imported a public-domain edition of Black's Law Dictionary into Wikisource, which also serves as a source of definitions for Wiktionary, and references for Wikipedia articles describing the state of the law at the time that the dictionary was published. The things that I have done and directions that I have gone in Wikipedia are now completely different, and perhaps richer and more fulfilling, than what I would have done had I never become involved in these other projects. bd2412 T 00:15, 7 April 2015 (UTC)

But I will have a variable counter listed on my userpage that says the last time I've edited (as I will still, like I said, on the nonce check back to read the Signpost or check my watchlist. But even that will be fairly haphazard and inconsistent in manner). Additionally, I will probably be somewhat active on Wiktionary, as I was before I became particularly active on Wikipedia in the first place.

As such, it's less "retirement" than "semi-retirement", I'd reckon.

 Bawolff: I solved the problem using a brute-force approaching: checking if the page exists going back fourteen days, and returning the one that does. I first need to make sure that what's there now works and works well...then I can start looking into getting a bot, getting a lab account, associating the two, and finally, rewriting the script so that it is in the simplest and most reliable possible form, given the platform (Labs) it is deployed on. One thing at a time! :) Thank you though, I wonder if there aren't other queries as well that I can much more easier run via Labs than via what I have now. Several times I have to fall back on scrubbing raw HTML to get the data I want, a terrible thing to have to do and a huge breakage pressure point. ResMar 19:41, 3 June 2015 (UTC)
That really depends on what sort of data you're after. You don't need a labs account to run (short) queries on quarry.wikimedia.org, so you can play with the data without getting an account (if you know sql). Formatting issue with the FC setup

The title of the noms are meant to be in bold. Also, it's grabbing the name of the nominations of FPs from the string at the end of their nomination, when ideally it will be taking them from the relevant subpage of WP:GO, as that includes italics and is also reformatted to be descriptive in cases where the bit after "Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/" is, say, "Sun 2" or "File:Campilhas March 2015-1a.jpg", or, worse, the jokey titles of nominations I tend to use. It's also alphabetizing the nominations, a step which probably should be skipped, honestly, because it has a good chance of putting images in a set in different parts of the list.  Adam Cuerden: Nomination information is taken from the nomination page. In this sub-case the script finds a wikilink in the raw code and retrieves it. If there are multiple wiki-links in the nomination string, the script returns something garbled. It came up the way that I wrote it and I kept it, because if there is more than one wikilink in the nomination information there's no way for me to know anything about the contribution of the second or third or fourth or what have you wikilink. It could be the agency of the photographer, or their geographic nation, or what have you. In those cases I saw that it broke in a predictable way, and kept the output, because that predictability makes it a useful flag for FC writing. ResMar 20:33, 7 June 2015 (UTC)

 Adam Cuerden: In this case I don't think it's such a big deal because the poor formatting makes it obvious that something is amiss. The trouble with specifically returning an error string is two-fold. First, how do I classify particular strings as errors or as successes, and distinguish between them? Second, if I start returning specific error messages, will the editors using the script know to keep an eye out for garbled output, or will they be trained to only hunt for red text? Because it's impossible, in this case, to know and account for every possible error that could be returned.
As for the problem of attribution: because of a total lack of standardization in featured topics and featured portals, co-nominations in either featured topics (rare) or portals (plausible) will not be picked up: only the first user-name link the script finds on the page will be returned. This is a much bigger failure point then the FP string troubles. Fix to the FC setup

In the bits where it has text that outputs in the form "10 featured pictures were promoted this week" could you wrap the number in {{subst:numtext|10}} (where "10" is whatever the output is) so it's converted into words? Adam Cuerden (talk) 12:03, 10 June 2015 (UTC)

By the way, Adam, if you want to further improve the robustness of the script you should talk the people handling the various featured content processes into including obvious metadata string in their nominations. For instance, instead of:

Or:

Hi, thanks for the doc on Graphs! I think we should host all graph-related templates on mw:Extension:Graph/Guide, or similar, and have some bot auto-copy it to the subscribed languages. We have a problem

Um... Mario? Remember how you said that the error made it obvious things needed checked?
You yourself buggered up the attribution for Addams. It's not a problem, but it's really not a good sign. Also, File:Seth_Rollins_holds_Money_in_the_Bank_briefcase_at_a_WWE_house_show_in_January_2015.jpg (which named Crisco 1492 as the creator, which is not at all correct) is another problematic case.

I think that the bot, in situations like these, needs to just fail, and give a note saying "Manual checking of creator needed" without trying to fill in the information. Plausible-but-incorrect information is far worse than nothing, as plausible doesn't get fixed. Adam Cuerden (talk) 03:28, 19 June 2015 (UTC)

 Adam Cuerden: With regards to the first case, that of Jane Addams. I told you that it would gum it up that way and that was the way that it gummed up. my edit was a correction, but I think that it's one that's reasonable to expect you to be able to make. I was a little surprised, in fact, that you haven't made it yet, given that that case was precisely what we had discussed earlier. Again, I will take no action here for the reasons I described earlier—you have not convinced me that this is something I can classify and fix.
With regards to the second issue, Seth Rollins. In this case the issue is one of precedence: the script looks for wikilinks in the creator field, and if it finds one it fills it in. It will then looks for URL links, and only do so if it fails to find a username link. This is a design shortfall involving my ordering of if: [...] elif: [...] statements, because I believe that it is much more normal to return a URL first, if it exists. I will swap the positions of the two in the code, and that will fix this particular issue. However, I think that it is reasonable to also append a (check) to the field's output if the script detects multiple types of links or multiple instances of links in the "creator" field; I believe that my guess will be right 95% of the time, but it won't hurt to have another eyeball.
That being said, you are again underestimating the complexity of the problem. You say that "in situations like these", but what situations do you mean, precisely? I can't wave a magic wand and determine each and every case when the script returns output that is wrong, you know that. You have to specify and classify precisely what situations you mean.
And finally, I am unconvinced that occasional mis-attribution is something to fret about too much. That's my personal opinion, though. ResMar 03:42, 19 June 2015 (UTC)
Aye, but the thing is, the Jane Addams case was fixed incorrectly, whereas a person clicking to the image instead of trying to fix it based on what the bot pasted in - would see both names, and presumably know well enough that both should appear. Hmm. I suppose the thing is, I think it's relatively easy to fix issues if you know an issue exists. As the vast majority of situations are unambiguous - one name in the creator field - where any ambiguity exists, the bot can still fill in nomination and nominator (I'm honestly not very concerned about co-nominators in FP, as FP is the one featured content process where nominators and creators quite often aren't the same), and that saved most of the work. Well, from a technical perspective it's definitely not something the script can pick up—trying to write that capacity in would also mess with the pickup system I have written now. From a writer's perspective, well, not to belittle your contribution, but does it really matter who the restorer was? I thought that information was encoded in the "nominator" string, because presumably the same person who did the restoration is the one who's nominating it. FPs have the unique problem of "found noms", common there but vanishingly rare in the other featured content processes, and this does somewhat dilute the importance of being the nominator—but not severely, AFAIK. Hey, Mario,
It was interesting to read your article in the upcoming Signpost because I have spend so much time categorizing the archives. I categorized every article that the Signpost issued from 2011-2015, every single one, none of which had any assigned categories. Now, I've started back at 2005 and am going forward to 2010.
It's not like I'm expecting a thank you from Signpost staff for spending weeks doing this, I offered to do this. But when you discuss how difficult the archives are to navigate, an acknowledgement of what I've contributed would be nice.
I realize that you are envisioning some new form of tagging but, right now, you can go and read all of the arbitration reports from 2011, all of the research reports from 2014, all of the articles that came out in August 2013 or all of the editorials from 2015. It might be nice to mention this categorization currently exists in case an editor wants to find an article in the archives. Thanks. Liz Read! Talk! 20:12, 24 June 2015 (UTC)

 Liz:, I continue to be amazed that you are continuing to put so much effort into HotCating Signpost archival articles, frankly not in a positive way. I feel like I have told you several times that your effort is perfunctory, for several reasons.
The first reason is that as an entity archives are mostly useless unless they are complete or mostly complete, and you are nowhere near that point yet. Not do I expect it to be possible for you to ever reach it, because even with the herculean effort you have demonstrated so far I doubt you have the wherewithal to navigate to and category over a decade's worth of content. There are over 5,000 Signpost articles. Do you really intend to go through and categorize every single one? I suppose you do feel that you can and will do so; but I do I personally think you will go through and do it? No. Because it is madness.
And besides, it's futile. It would take me an unknown but not nearly as lengthy amount of time to code, test, BOTREQ, and fully run a bot to handle all of these tasks—maybe five hours of effort altogether, maybe less. That bot would get that task done and get it done automatically in a few hours. Everyone would be free to move on with their lives. If you really feel so strongly about this issue I suggest that instead of spending still more time rubbing sticks together, you get out the propane torch.
Second and more importantly, your work is being made redundant even as you are doing it by a much more sophisticated system. You have named several categories that you have assembled through manual sweat of the brow; very good. I will now return the contents of these categories back to you without using categories at all, but through the use of the tagging system. Here we go:

My immediate advice to you would be to stop this madness at once.

Minor FC setup fixes

Things I've noticed keep needing to be fixed. Minor things:

  • Noinclude wrappers, exactly as in this diff (it fixes single page view)
  • {{-}} just before the last, centred image.

  • The starter images for FAs/FLs/FPs should come after the "[Number] Featured [X] were promoted this week.", not before the headers for each. (The "after the header") is a manual of style thing; it makes the context clearer for blind readers, which we have a few of.)

  • Most minor of all, can you leave out, say, the FL image if no FLs were promoted that week?

May need to think about how to more flexibly set up the timetable. That being said: I wrote this importer to make setting up and writing FC easier for you. Please tell the others not to compensate for the reduced workload by lengthening the already extremely wordy FC descriptions even further: there needs to be a 100 word firm length limit, and fewer than 75 words would be preferable. The template at the bottom of the page (Wikipedia:Signpost/Template:Signpost-article-comments-end) needs two dates: one week before the current edition and one week after it. Another error. It seems that 5 August edition all versions are created with "This Signpost "Featured content" report covers material promoted from 12 July to 19 July.", which contains the same incorrect range every time. The correct dates can be easily retrieved from the WP:GO archive. For example the dates for Wikipedia:Goings-on/July 19, 2015 are July 19 and July 25.
Also is there a reason, why the descriptions on WP:GO are not used? The contributors to the FC section doesn't seem to bother with retitling images if they are part of a set, and having the same text for ten images doesn't really looks good.

 Kaldari: It's absolutely ok to contribute to the tech section. We haven't run anything that way yet, but the structure would look like this: a lead that you would write would be the first heading, and then the TN info would be available under an "In brief" heading, just like how things are arranged in the other core sections of the Signpost (the ones with the regular writers...). Great Signpost this week

I gave some personal thanks to Bryce, but I wanted each of you Signpost board folks how much I appreciated this issue. Not only was the op-ed outstanding and thought provoking, the news section was well above average and Tony's travelogue was distinctive and fun to read. For my part, I'd like to see more profiles like that which appeared in the blog. It's impossible to cover every noteworthy event, but the statistical analysis seemed to line up with my anecdotal recollection of the event as it unfolded. Having the opportunity to see such an event analysis on an occasional basis may prove to be a different cross section of exactly how we function in real time. @Hafspajen: FC_Importer.py, the bit of code with which I am generating these pages, is a Python script that at the moment I am running on a weekly basis off of my own computer. It's run via the command line using the python command.
So far no one else has ever used the script. First this is because it's still a work in progress, as there's a couple of things I'd like to write in and issues I'd like to address. I will hopefully get around to sitting down and banging out the code this week. Second this is because the script is not very portable. This a command line tool without a GUI, and therefore not something I expect those not sufficiently technically inclined to be able to easily make use of.
In the long term the best-case deployment for this script is to create a Labs tool for it. I have too many projects and too little experience in this realm, however, so although I tinkered with it a bit I am not the person to make this happen.
That means that, for now, if you want to use this tool yourself, you will have to install it. This is a highly technical operation because it requires installing Python, adding Python to the system variables, installing pywikibot, configuring pywikibot, and then downloading and saving the scripts.
On the other hand, yes, sometimes I forget to run it, or life intercedes and I don't get around to it, as happened here. ResMar 18:58, 22 August 2015 (UTC)

Really I couldn't care less (for the credit; obviously I care enough to point out a problem), but I noticed that your import script for the FPs in the Signpost gave the nomination to both me and Brandmeister for the nomination of Lovers Beneath An Umbrella in the Snow here when he didn't do nothing (nothing!) except persuade me that I should have confidence in my own nomination. I suppose the script checks for signatures after the "as nominator" and before any Oppose or Comment or Support? Or uses spells, what do I know? Anyway, I thought you might want to know in case it is any easy fix. If you aren't going to fix it, let me know why it makes the mistake and I'll sign up for the Wikicup next year and take advantage of it. ;P. Belle (talk) 14:11, 25 September 2015 (UTC)

You are invited to join us for a full Saturday (drop-in any time!) of social Wikipedia editing at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) for our upcoming "WikiArte" Latin America Edit-a-thon, for Wiki Arte y Cultura Latinoamericana, a communal day of creating, updating, improving, and translating Wikipedia articles about Latin American art and culture.

11:00am - 5:00 pm (drop-in anytime!) at MoMA Cullman Education and Research Building, 4 West 54th Street

All are invited, with no specialized knowledge of the subject or Wikipedia editing experience required. We will provide training sessions and resources for beginner Wikipedians, WiFi, reference materials, and suggested topics, as well as childcare and refreshments.

Please bring your laptop, power cord, and ideas for articles that need to be updated, translated, or created. You are welcome to edit all day or drop by to show your support, and to follow #WikiArte on social media!

Trainings for new and less experienced Wikipedia editors will be offered (in English) at 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., and 3:30 p.m. Tutorials and resources in Spanish will be available online, and participants are also encouraged to work on the Spanish and Portuguese language editions of Wikipedia.

The Guggenheim aims to further the goals of Ada Lovelace Day for STEM, and Art+Feminism for art, in a field that, by its nature combines both.

ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open!

Hello, Resident Mario. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
