Hi
[edit]Hi Raneem, Im Nableezy and Ive been here a while and Id like to try to help you make the most of your time editing here. There are a few things about Wikipedia and how it is run that you have to be aware of so as to avoid unproductive arguments and potentially administrative sanctions. The first of which is we operate on consensus. And Ill get back to what "consensus" means here on Wikipedia in a bit. But there are lots of people with lots of opinions here, so we try to set that aside and evaluate as dispassionately as we can what the body of reliable sources say about a topic. And then we try to work out how create a "neutral point of view" description of that topic. But neutral doesnt mean we decide who is right and who is wrong and tell a story from one perspective, rather it means trying to describe the views that exist without engaging in the debate about them. For example, a topic I was pretty heavily involved in some years ago, the articles on the various Israeli settlements have a line saying "the international community considers Israeli settlements illegal under international law, however Israel disputes this". Now being honest with you, I think thats a cop out, the settlements are blatantly illegal, and nearly every serious source on the planet agrees. But we describe the dispute, most of the world says X, but Israel says Y.
So, back to consensus. Consensus here isnt a vote, or at least it isnt just a vote, its a vote weighted based on what arguments are the most policy compliant. There been discussions I was on the losing side by the numbers, but my argument was more in keeping with our policies so the "consensus" went that way (for example, Talk:Jerusalem Day#Requested move). Most of the times things will go by the numbers here, but not necessarily. But in the discussion at Palestinian genocide accusation, there was near uniform acceptance of that title as the least bad option at least. And a recognition that something like Palestinian genocide would never garner that widespread support. But thats how it goes on an international project that welcomes all perspectives, youre going to have to accept that sometimes you have to find what everybody hates least and accept that.
I would really like you to find this to be a welcoming place, and I think youll find it that way if you are able to understand how things work here. If there is anything I can help you with please free to write on my user talk page, linked in my signature at the end of this message. Take care, nableezy - 04:01, 1 November 2023 (UTC)
- There are a few more things you have to understand about our articles and their talk pages. They are based on other sources, not our own arguments. We cant say this meets such and such definition and as such this and this are true. That is original research. We need reliable sources to support viewpoints directly for them to be included. And when there is a conflict in reliable sources, we have to then reflect that disagreement. If there are enough reliable sources that dispute that, for example, the attacks in Gaza meet the definition of genocide then the Wikipedia article cannot say as a statement of fact that they do. Next, for talk pages, they are meant not for discussing the real world conflict, but rather for discussing the sources and what they say and how our article should reflect them. So arguing that something is true is not going to be a productive use of your time. Because what matters for our articles is not what we know, it is what we can source. nableezy - 04:10, 1 November 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot! I wasn't aware. I appreciate the education. Raneemh (talk) 04:38, 1 November 2023 (UTC)
- I would start with reading WP:V, WP:NPOV, and WP:OR, along with WP:RS to get a solid basis for how we are supposed to construct an article, and along with that how to argue according to the content policies on our talk pages. Its a lot of reading, but this is an encyclopedia after all. And again, feel free to ask me any questions. nableezy - 04:51, 1 November 2023 (UTC)

Canvassing
[edit]I see you made a pinned post on your twitter/X account (which is easily findable from the link on your userpage) advocating for other people to join the discussion on the Palestinian genocide talkpage, saying that you would like it if people requested a change enmasse to the title of the article
and don't want Wikipedia regulars to control the narrative
. This is a violation of Wikipedia policy on canvassing (located at Wikipedia:Canvassing), specifically Wikipedia:Canvassing#Campaigning and Wikipedia:Canvassing#Stealth_canvassing. Hemiauchenia (talk) 04:20, 1 November 2023 (UTC)
- Alright. Thank you for notifying me. I have stated my intent to close the discussion. Raneemh (talk) 04:41, 1 November 2023 (UTC)
- Yeah, what we want here is everything above board. There are lots of examples of canvassing on either side of these hot topic issues, and they are all wrong in that they are attempting to subvert our consensus model. Argue with the best sources to the best of your ability, but do it within the rules we have and things will be much easier here. nableezy - 04:44, 1 November 2023 (UTC)

DYK for Senate Avenue YMCA
[edit]On 24 April 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Senate Avenue YMCA, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the Indianapolis African-American community raised $100,000 in just ten days in 1911 to establish the Senate Avenue YMCA? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Senate Avenue YMCA. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Senate Avenue YMCA), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

I have sent you a note about a page you started
[edit]Hi Raneemh. Thank you for your work on Brownsyne Tucker Edmonds. Another editor, Klbrain, has reviewed it as part of new pages patrol and left the following comment:
Thank you for helpfully creating and improving this article through draft phase and now into 'article space'. It's a well-warranted addition to the project. In the move to article space, its a good idea to add categories, so that it can be found more easily. Linking to Wikidata is also helpful (I've done this now), as that also links to other sites, like ORCID and Scopus.
To reply, leave a comment here and begin it with {{Re|Klbrain}}
. (Message delivered via the Page Curation tool, on behalf of the reviewer.)

Disambiguation link notification for May 24
[edit]Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Nancy Woloch, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Wesley College. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Page move
[edit]Hi. Thank you for creating the page Vaughn v. Williams. During the new page curation process, I moved this article to the title "Rhodes family incident" for two reasons. (1) The content of the article outlined the history of the incident, rather than the case and trial, and (2) it appears that the title is better fitting per WP:COMMONNAME. If you disagree with or object to this move, send me a ping and I will move it back, and will open a discussion on the talk page. Keep in mind that as part of this move, the original title will automatically redirect to the new title, so searches for "Vaughn v. Williams" will redirect accordingly. Thank you for this article, and happy editing! Bgv. (talk) 21:52, 13 June 2024 (UTC)
