Welcome to the 2014 WikiCup!

[edit]

Hello Prism, and welcome to the 2014 WikiCup! Your submission page can be found here. The competition began on 1 January. There have been a few small changes from last year; the rules can be read in full at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring, and the page also includes a summary of changes. One important rule to remember is that only content on which you have completed significant work, and nominated, in 2014 is eligible for points in the competition- the judges will be checking! As ever, this year's competition includes some younger editors. If you are a younger editor, you are certainly welcome, but we have written an advice page at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Advice for younger editors for you. Please do take a look. Any questions should be directed to one of the judges, or left on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup. Signups will close at the end of January, and the first round will end on 26 February; the 64 highest scorers at that time will make it to round 2. Good luck! The article Trouble (Natalia Kills album) you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold . The article is close to meeting the good article criteria, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needed to be addressed. If these are fixed within 7 days, the article will pass, otherwise it will fail. See Talk:Trouble (Natalia Kills album) for things which need to be addressed. Your rollback request

Hi Prism, I have granted rollback rights to your account in accordance with your request. Please be aware that rollback should be used to revert vandalism, spam and blatantly unconstructive edits; using it to revert any other type of edit - such as by revert-warring or reverting edits you disagree with - can lead to it being removed from your account...sometimes without any warning depending on the admin who becomes aware of any misuse. If you think an edit should require a reason for reverting, use a manual edit summary instead of using the rollback tool. For practice, you may wish to see Wikipedia:New admin school/Rollback. RE: "Double Rainbow"

[edit]

Sure I'd love to help :)! Is it in your sandbox?--(CA)Giacobbe (talk) 22:46, 9 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm it looks like you've got most of the good-sourced information. Overall it looks like a well written article, should have no problems passing GA! I'll be more then willing to review it if you'd like! --(CA)Giacobbe (talk) 22:58, 9 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Would you mind doing a second look of "It Takes Two"? The reviewer before it did no actual review, and judging by his history, don't think he is suitable to be reviewing GA's.--(CA)Giacobbe (talk) 23:23, 10 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
To clarify, another big reason why I failed the GA review is because the nominator @(CA)Giacobbe: was also the creator of the article, which I seriously doubt is a valid nomination. It's like "favoriting" your own tweets or "liking" your own Facebook status. XXSNUGGUMSXX (talk) 04:50, 11 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Once again a personal attack and is not grounds to fail a GA. You did NO review of the article whatsoever, just stop.--(CA)Giacobbe (talk) 05:56, 11 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Not so much personal attack as it as questioning validity XXSNUGGUMSXX (talk) 06:04, 11 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@XXSNUGGUMSXX: It is allowed to nominate your own created article. Failing a review just because someone created the article and nominated it is wrong. I nominated Saturday Night (Natalia Kills song), which you reviewed though I think I should get a reassessment, and I created that article. I will review "It Takes Two". prism 11:29, 11 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
That wasn't the only reason I failed it for GA- another reason was that it didn't have much coverage compared to other GA's I've seen (though (CA)Giacobbe says it was enough for a "deluxe edition" article). XXSNUGGUMSXX (talk) 13:25, 11 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@XXSNUGGUMSXX: Still not enough of a valid reason to quick fail it. The sources are reliable, there's plenty of good information and the coverage is sufficient for a deluxe edition song, since not many editors review such songs. prism 13:28, 11 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Wide Awake

[edit]

Hey Prism, I was wondering if you'd like to do a co-nomination of "Wide Awake" with me? I had originally created the article a while back and built it up, but wasn't able to promote it to GA because of other commitments at the time. If you were interested that'd be great, because we could promote Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection to a good topic, it'd be the first one of Katy's to do so. Trouble themes

[edit]

Hi, Prism! As per your request, I went through the interview and I have highlighted some themes. I have not gone through the article to see if you've already listed some things but I'm just going to list them all-

  • One of the themes is of her troubled childhood, and the problematic and destructive household she grew up in. Also how she got into more trouble after she escaped. Basically one prominent theme of trouble is indeed, trouble.
  • "The funny thing is, everyone has always said to me all my life, 'Don't let those bad thing define you. Brush it off. Think positive'. I don't want to do that - I want to do the f**king opposite" - this is very important. It defines the approach to the songs.
  • "Worst moments" is the key word. The theme of the album revolves around the worst of her memories.
  • Her "erratic feelings of love and passionate desperation" and the "suicide" ballads
  • It deals with dealing her problems first hand and looking back at them, which she described as "torture".
  • A motif of being "sad and trapped"

I guess that's all I could flesh out. I wish she had sold a little more of that album, and the process of making it a featured article would be easier, because maybe some reviewers will hold that against it. I suggest reframing some of the article in such a way that the least emphasis is on its commercial performance, such as a removal of a "Commercial performance" section altoghether, and sticking it into a section entitled "Reception" only. You can also remove "Critical reception". Just some suggestions. --WonderBoy1998 (talk) 13:58, 14 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I went through the article. It looks good to me. Don't worry it takes time for peer reviews to begin. Also, do you think mentioning Kills' lipstick product "L'Oreal Colour Riche 178 in Cardinal Plume" really important? It seems like product placement lol --WonderBoy1998 (talk) 15:27, 19 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2014 January newsletter

[edit]

The 2014 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with, at time of writing, 138 participants. The is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2010. If you are yet to join the competition, don't worry- the judges have agreed to keep the signups open for a few more days. By a wide margin, our current leader is newcomer Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions), whose set of 14 featured pictures, the first FPs of the competition, was worth 490 points. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:

Featured articles, featured lists, featured topics and featured portals are yet to play a part in the competition. The judges have removed a number of submissions which were deemed ineligible. Typically, we aim to see work on a project, followed by a nomination, followed by promotion, this year. We apologise for any disappointment caused by our strict enforcement this year; we're aiming to keep the competition as fair as possible.

Wikipedians interested in friendly competition may be interested to take part in The Core Contest; unlike the WikiCup, The Core Contest is not about audited content, but, like the WikiCup, it is about article improvement; specifically, The Core Contest is about contribution to some of Wikipedia's most important article. Of course, any work done for The Core Contest, if it leads to a DYK, GA or FA, can earn WikiCup points.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. (talk) 17:23, 10 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

File permission problem with File:Juicy J performing.png

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Juicy J performing.png. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. WikiCup 2014 February newsletter

[edit]

And so ends the most competitive first round we have ever seen, with 38 points required to qualify for round 2. Last year, 19 points secured a place; before that, 11 (2012) or 8 (2011) were enough. This is both a blessing and a curse. While it shows the vigourous good health of the competition, it also means that we have already lost many worthy competitors. Our top three scorers were:

  1. Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions), a WikiCup newcomer whose high-quality scans of rare banknotes represent an unusual, interesting and valuable contribution to Wikipedia. Most of Godot's points this round have come from a large set of pictures used in Treasury Note (1890–91).
  2. Oh, better far to live and die / Under the brave black flag I fly... Adam Cuerden (submissions), a WikiCup veteran and a finalist last year, Adam is also a featured picture specialist, focusing on the restoration of historical images. This month's promotions have included a carefully restored set of artist William Russell Flint's work.
  3. United States WikiRedactor (submissions), another WikiCup newcomer. WikiRedactor has claimed points for good article reviews and good articles relating to pop music, many of which were awarded bonus points. Articles include Sky Ferreira, Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus and "Wrecking Ball" (Miley Cyrus song).

Other competitors of note include:

After such a competitive first round, expect the second round to also be fiercely fought. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 1 but before the start of round 2 can be claimed in round 2, but please do not update your submission page until March (UTC). Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally.

Trouble (Natalia Kills album) [Review]

[edit]
Overview
  • The lead should be three paragraphs long for an article this size; having four is not a huge problem but I'd try and condense it.
  • So So Gay may not be the best source for the album's reception. I know that there aren't many reviews available but that is a more of an LGBT-oriented publication than a credible music publication.
  • A whole paragraph on the album's artwork may be slightly undue, especially considering that the Composition section is around the same size (a section which is more important).
  • Ref #1 needs fully citing.

I'll look at the prose in-depth soon...JennKR | 14:34, 16 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2014 March newsletter

[edit]

A quick update as we are half way through round two of this year's competition. WikiCup newcomer Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions) (Pool E) leads, having produced a massive set of featured pictures for Silver certificate (United States), an article also brought to featured list status. Former finalist Oh, better far to live and die / Under the brave black flag I fly... Adam Cuerden (submissions) (Pool G) is in second, which he owes mostly to his work with historical images, including a number of images from Urania's Mirror, an article also brought to good status. 2010 champion (Pool C) is third overall, thanks to contributions relating to naval history, including the newly featured Japanese battleship Nagato. Rhodesia Cliftonian (submissions), who currently leads Pool A and is sixth overall, takes the title for the highest scoring individual article of the competition so far, with the top importance featured article Ian Smith.

With 26 people having already scored over 100 points, it is likely that well over 100 points will be needed to secure a place in round 3. Recent years have required 123 (2013), 65 (2012), 41 (2011) and 100 (2010). Remember that only 64 will progress to round 3 at the end of April. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page; if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally. A suggestion

[edit]

@XXSNUGGUMSXX, (CA)Giacobbe, and WikiRedactor: Hi everyone! I was thinking about this earlier when I was reviewing the GAN for "Adore You" and I actually think it is a good idea. What if we, on a weekly basis, reunite on a Tinychat (or another site of the same type) and discuss improvements to music-related articles; our GANs among other stuff and maybe even chat a bit about our musical preferences and stuff. (Don't get me wrong, I think this is a good idea because we all get along and we all like pop music in general, so...) What do you say? prism 20:57, 15 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

E.T.

[edit]

@(CA)Giacobbe and XXSNUGGUMSXX: So I've been envisioning a restructured article for "E.T." and here's a diagram with some information. If you agree, let's make all modifications to the structure here so we have a basis for our work.

Lead: First two paragraphs could address the original song while the third gives an overview on the remixed version.

Background and release: Information on the conception and on the release as a promotional single as well.

Composition: All the information on the song's musical style, lyricism etc. however without info pertaining to Kanye's verses.

Critical reception: All the critiques for the original version.

Commercial response: Entries on charts and peaks of the original version.

Credits and personnel: Credits according to booklet of the 2010 edition of Teenage Dream.

Charts

Release history

Remix featuring Kanye West: The section pertaining to the remixed version, obviously. Before the sub-sections, an introduction on them.

Background and release: Why Kanye participated on the single and details of its release;
New verses or Composition: Considering the song maintains its original sound and lyrics for Katy, this section would only elaborate on West's verses.
Critical reception (?): There are only a few reviews of the single version so maybe this could be merged to the previous section.
Commercial performance
Credits and personnel: New information on mixing, recording etc. of the single version (which can be found on the booklet of Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection)
Charts

Recent revert of edit on Trouble (Natalia Kills album)

[edit]

Hello. Hope you're well. I just wanted to know the rationale of reverting my recent edit. I fixed url errors in the references as the article is listed on this category: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Pages_with_URL_errors.

Also I changed reference list to width based as the article is on this list https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Articles_using_fixed_number_of_columns_in_reflist. I had thought that all articles were moving towards having reflists without fixed columns but fixed widths. Cowlibob (talk) 16:26, 16 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Cowlibob: Thank you for your edits; the only reason I reverted you was because of Checklinks, that denoted it as a problematic link due to its changing path. Which was actually just the removal of "http://" once you clicked on it. However if it is needed I won't revert you again. prism 16:30, 16 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the quick reply. For some reason, wikipedia sometimes doesn't allow links without http:// to appear in the references. I'll make the relevant changes. Cowlibob (talk) 16:36, 16 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

First of all, good job with this article. However, there's some things that have been missed I think from the GA review. See Talk:Flatline_(song) for my suggestions of things which I think need doing to preserve the GA status. → Lil-℧niquԐ 1 - { Talk } - 22:07, 16 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

there's no rush. I just thought I'd let you know. I won't demote the article don't worry. i think its really good and almost there :P → Lil-℧niquԐ 1 - { Talk } - 22:33, 16 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
