New Page Reviewer Newsletter

Hello Pigsonthewing, thank you for your efforts reviewing new pages!

Backlog update:

  • The new page backlog is currently at 16,991 pages. We have worked hard to decrease from over 22,000, but more hard work is needed! Please consider reviewing even just a few pages a a day.

Technology update:

  • Rentier has created a NPP browser in WMF Labs that allows you to search new unreviewed pages using keywords and categories.

General project update:

  • The Wikimedia Foundation Community Tech team is working with the community to implement the autoconfirmed article creation trial. The trial is currently set to start on 7 September 2017, pending final approval of the technical features.
  • Please remember to focus on the quality of review: correct tagging of articles and not tagbombing are important. Searching for potential copyright violations is also important, and it can be aided by Earwig's Copyvio Detector, which can be added to your toolbar for ease of use with this user script.
  • To keep up with the latest conversation on New Pages Patrol or to ask questions, you can go to Wikipedia talk:New pages patrol/Reviewers and add it to your watchlist.

If you wish to opt-out of future mailings, go here. TonyBallioni (talk) 20:33, 24 August 2017 (UTC)

Infobox mergers

Hello, To make the infobox merger process a bit easy, is it possible to add some of the points of WP:INFOCOL into one of the guidelines / policy? -- Pankaj Jain Capankajsmilyo (talk · contribs · count) 14:55, 28 August 2017 (UTC)

@Capankajsmilyo: Technically, yes, but you may encounter some objections. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 16:12, 28 August 2017 (UTC)
Objections would help in analysing the situation better. In any case, they would be much better than the opposition's faced on merge discussions. The epic was "Oppose" followed by a signature. -- Pankaj Jain Capankajsmilyo (talk · contribs · count) 16:17, 28 August 2017 (UTC)

My edit

Hello, you reverted my edit on Dobby cloth, not particularly bothered by that but just to let you know I did it the way I did because it's not really a deadlink, more the page has been updated in recent times and the original info isn't there, if it ever was. I'm sure your way is probably technically right but I basically didn't want to mistag it as someone will probably breeze through and say it's not a dead link. Cheers. Mramoeba (talk) 19:46, 28 August 2017 (UTC)

@Mramoeba: Ah, sorry, my mistake. In that case, use {{Not in citation}} (having first checked, as I have just done, that the old version of the page isn't in the Wayback machine. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 19:55, 28 August 2017 (UTC)
yes! That looks appropriate. I should have guessed there would be a tag for it. Thanks. Mramoeba (talk) 20:15, 28 August 2017 (UTC)

MfD notice

Courtesy notification that I have nominated for deletion Wikipedia:Colour contrast, which you created in July 2015. In my view our information about color contrast is so scattered and disorganized as to present a significant problem for both use and maintenance, including information at WP:COLOR, WP:SIGAPP, WP:SIGTUT, WP:Colour contrast, a new subpage that I am sandboxing at User:Mandruss/sandbox2, and possibly one or two more places that I haven't run across yet. I would be interested in ideas for restructuring and simplification, but this page seems largely redundant with other information, and anything not redundant could be merged. If you disagree, please Oppose the deletion (needless to say). Thanks. ―Mandruss  04:13, 29 August 2017 (UTC)

Voice chat for podcast WikiJabber

Hi Pigsonthewing, I'm hosting the podcasts de:WP:WikiStammtisch (German) and meta:WikiJabber (English) and I would like to invite you to WikiJabber. We would talk about you, your relationship to Wikipedia etc. and other interesting projects. Technically it is a talk via https://zencastr.com for about an hour. What do you think? --Sebastian Wallroth (talk) 06:22, 29 August 2017 (UTC)

@Sebastian Wallroth: I'm flattered to be asked, thank you, and happy to participate. I'll email you. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 11:27, 29 August 2017 (UTC)

Improper disposal of latex balloons and its environmental effects

You might appreciate Improper disposal of latex balloons and its environmental effects. It has been merged and redirected since creation but a good start I think. Agathoclea (talk) 17:34, 29 August 2017 (UTC)

Technical news

  • You will now get a notification when someone tries to log in to your account and fails. If they try from a device that has logged into your account before, you will be notified after five failed attempts. You can also set in your preferences to get an email when someone logs in to your account from a new device or IP address, which may be encouraged for admins and accounts with sensitive permissions.
  • Syntax highlighting is now available as a beta feature (more info). This may assist administrators and template editors when dealing with intricate syntax of high-risk templates and system messages.

Arbitration

  • Applications for CheckUser and Oversight are being accepted by the Arbitration Committee until September 12. Community discussion of the candidates will begin on September 18.
