Hi. Thank you. This is a work in progress. All statements will be fully referenced in due course. Philip Sugarman (talk) 19:44, 17 June 2021 (UTC) @Whoisjohngalt: Hi, I have uploaded a picture of Doug richford supplied by his son. I took a phone pic of a photo print. I have uploaded this but got the usual copyright gobbledegook back. Despite endless reading about creative commons etc I simply do not know what to type where or what to click on to solve this license issue. Can you help?
thanks Philip
Niche but nice

Hello and welcome to Wikipedia. When you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, such as at User talk:Possibly, (but never when editing articles), please be sure to sign your posts. There are two ways to do this. Either:
- Add four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment, or
- With the cursor positioned at the end of your comment, click on the signature button located above the edit window.
This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. This information is necessary to allow other editors to easily see who wrote what and when.

Board position and editing
[edit]Hello! I hope you have read WP:COI. We very much do not want representatives of companies (a board member is an active representative for the best interests of a company/society, wouldn't you say?) editing the company or society's page directly. Editing drafts directly is OK, as they are not visible to the public, but for "live" articles please use talk page requests as we aim to keep Wikipedia neutral. A Wikipedia page is not a promotional extension of a company or society, but rather a factual restatement of what has already been written about the organization. Please do participate in the above COIN discussion so that we know you understand this. --- Possibly ☎ 05:51, 5 October 2021 (UTC)

[edit]The Jews of Leeds
[edit]Hi the article creator wants the article redirected. Why are you reverting? Mccapra (talk) 16:38, 26 December 2021 (UTC)
- Hi - I don't think the change of title is justified, it sounds inappropriate, almost dismissive - what is the reason for the change? Philip Sugarman (talk) 17:05, 26 December 2021 (UTC)
- Well it’s consistent with other articles on Jewish history. In any case you shouldn’t keep just flipping it back without discussing it either on the article talk page or in the talk page of user:747pilot. Mccapra (talk) 18:44, 26 December 2021 (UTC)
- There are more pages entitled "Jews of" in wikipedia as far as I can see, so that point doesn't hold at all. And you flipped/tried to the flip the title without any discussion, whilst I was editing. And the software insisted at the end of two major edits that I make a choice between versions. I did not accept your title as you gave / I saw no reason at all, but I did accept constructive changes by others such as categories. Philip Sugarman (talk) 19:54, 26 December 2021 (UTC)
- I’m afraid I didn’t realise you were editing it, so I should have looked. User:747pilot asked me on my talk page why his page move wasn’t working and I redirected it to resolve the issue he raised. Anyway we now have two near-duplicate articles which isn’t going to stand, so there needs be a discussion about the preferred title. Mccapra (talk) 20:57, 26 December 2021 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for January 5
[edit]Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited History of the Jews in Leeds, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Countess of Harewood. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)
It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, DPL bot (talk) 06:03, 5 January 2022 (UTC)
- In this case the title Countess of Harewood is what is needed, so the disambiguation page, which lists a series of incumbents, is perfectly appropriate Philip Sugarman (talk) 15:13, 5 January 2022 (UTC)
- You might already know this, but "DPL bot" is a bot (a program), so it will not see your reply. Your reply is great for historical reasons though. Cheers. 73.127.147.187 (talk) 10:37, 17 February 2022 (UTC)
Splitting articles into list and history
[edit]Hi Philip,
What would you think about splitting History of the Jews in Kingston upon Hull and History of the Jews in Leeds into an article and a list each? That would result in four articles: History of the Jews in Kingston upon Hull; List of Jews in Kingston upon Hull; History of the Jews in Leeds; and List of the Jews in Leeds. This would resolve several issues currently facing the articles, including WP:BLOATED, WP:OVERCITE, and WP:PAGESIZE. Each article already has portions that would lend themselves well to a list format. See for example List of Jews in sports. As a general note, even there each entry only has one ref to back it up; for noncontroversial assertions that's generally all that's needed.
Thanks, Lkb335 (talk) 15:33, 5 March 2022 (UTC)
- Hi yes I will look at this option , thanks Philip Sugarman (talk) 15:39, 5 March 2022 (UTC)
- I see there is a wikipeida page on how to split articles, but like so much else in wikipedia I find it very technical. I am away for a week and will study it on return. Do you have any basic tips on how to split articles most efficiently - so as not to have to re-enter references? thanks Philip Sugarman (talk) 22:48, 5 March 2022 (UTC)
- I'll propose a split on each article's talk page. Lkb335 (talk) 16:01, 6 March 2022 (UTC)
Conflict of Interest with History of the Jews in Kingston upon Hull and Original Research
[edit]Please advise whether you have a conflict of interest with the topic, as you appear to be using yourself as a source for content including entirely inappropriate original research which are cited as "personal communications".Slywriter (talk) 20:00, 6 March 2022 (UTC)
- Disappearing for a month then editing the article without addressing the Conflict of Interest is in poor form. Please answer this question or it will be escalated.Slywriter (talk) 23:02, 12 April 2022 (UTC)
- @Slywriter Hi. Have been busy. Sorry if I have broken any rules in contributing to Wikipedia. I do my best to find references which meet all requirements, used my own book as a last resort as best I recall. Sorry it seems to have upset you. Suggest you just delete offending references. No problem. Keep up the good work 😃 Philip Sugarman (talk) 18:21, 13 April 2022 (UTC)

"The Leeds Jewish Community"
[edit]Hello, in History of Jews in Kingston upon Hull you have used "The Leeds Jewish Community" as a reference (currently no 70). The date of publication is quoted as 1988 but I cannot find that book, is it a typo and should be 1998? Thanks. Keith D (talk) 13:38, 20 January 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Keith
- Certainly Murray Freedman publishes multiple books, chapters and pamphlets about the Jews of Leeds, som privately. I think this is the full reference: M. Freedman (1988) "The Leeds Jewish Community" pp. 161–174 in L. S. Tate (ed) Aspects of Leeds ISBN 1-871647-38-X
- thanks for your interest.
- Philip Philip Sugarman (talk) 16:43, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
- Keith
- Actually, I see that the first edition is 1998, indeed you are correct. It looks like I had picked up this error from the City of Leeds wikipage, which I have just corrected, as I was keen to use the earliest date for an overview work by Freedman. I don't have all of his publications..

Speedy deletion nomination of History of the Jews of Grimsby
[edit]If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on History of the Jews of Grimsby requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appears to be a direct copy from https://www.jewishgen.org/jcr-uk/community/Gr/index.htm#:~:text=Although%20there%20had%20been%20a,attractive%20place%20to%20travel%20through. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.
If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Fathoms Below (talk) 15:59, 31 October 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Philip Sugarman, I saw that you changed the content in that article so that it's no longer eligible for G12. I know the nomination for deletion was a bit hasty, but it involves a Wikipedia policy with legal ramifications. Just please be careful when reading sources not to paste copyrighted content, and I saw that you said here that you were "editing down the source" or changing the content from a cut and paste I presume? I wouldn't recommend that since editing down the source can easily result in close paraphrasing, which can create more problems with copyright. Please make sure to write all content in your own words without a similar structure to the sources we use. Thanks, Fathoms Below (talk) 16:24, 31 October 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for your advice, I will not cut and paste again. Philip Sugarman (talk) 08:42, 1 November 2024 (UTC)
