GOCE March drive newsletter
Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 backlog elimination drive update
Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 Backlog elimination drive! Here's the mid-drive newsletter. Participation: We have had 58 people sign up for this drive so far, which compares favorably with our last drive, and 27 have copy-edited at least one article. If you have signed up but have not yet copy-edited any articles, please consider doing so. Every bit helps! If you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us! Progress report: Our target of completing the 2010 articles has almost been reached, with only 56 remaining of the 194 we had at the start of the drive. The last ones are always the most difficult, so thank you if you are able to help copy-edit any of the remaining articles. We have reduced the total backlog by 163 articles so far. Special thanks: Special thanks to Stfg, who has been going through the backlog and doing some preliminary vetting of the articles—removing copyright violations, doing initial clean-up, and nominating some for deletion. This work has helped make the drive a more pleasant experience for all our volunteers. Your drive coordinators – Dianna (talk), Stfg (talk), and Dank (talk)To discontinue receiving GOCE newsletters, please remove your name from our mailing list. |
Hi. Looking at the Duke Jing of Jin article, I see a broken link; rather an absent link. The note at the bottom “Modern day Tunliu County in Shanxi Province” is not linked from anywhere in the article with a footnote. This is a common problem with the {{cref2}}/{{cnote2}} and similar templates that don't use mw:cite.php (which is what drives the usual ref tags). Please see these edits to Ruo (state) and Ying (Chu). I've updated them to use {{efn}} and {{notes}} which are a better method of doing explanatory notes. They generated refs tags and will complain if a note is defined but not used, just like with ref tags (other way, too; used but undefined). I can't fix Duke Jing of Jin because I'm not sure where to put the footnote in the prose. The notes section would look like this:
{{notes | notes = {{efn | name = place name | Modern day [[Tunliu County]] in [[Shanxi Province]] }} }}
with {{efn|name=place name}}
placed at the appropriate spot in the article (with "place name" best changed to something more apt). I'm thinking this will be trivial for you, so thanks. Alarbus (talk) 08:53, 15 March 2012 (UTC)
GOCE March drive wrap-up
Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 backlog elimination drive
Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 Backlog elimination drive! This is the most successful drive we have had for quite a while. Here is your end-of-drive wrap-up newsletter. Participation Of the 70 people who signed up for this drive, 40 copy-edited at least one article. Thanks to all who participated! Special acknowledgement goes out to Lfstevens, who did over 200 articles, most of them in the last third of the drive, and topped all three leaderboard categories. You're a superstar! Stfg and others have been pre-checking the articles for quality and conformance to Wikipedia guidelines; some have been nominated for deletion or had some preliminary clean-up done to help make the copy-edit process more fun and appealing. Thanks to all who helped get those nasty last few articles out of the target months. Progress report During this drive we were successful in eliminating our target months—October, November, and December 2010—from the queue, and have now eliminated all the 2010 articles from our list. We were able to complete 500 articles this month! End-of-drive results and barnstar information can be found here. When working on the backlog, please keep in mind that there are options other than copy-editing available; some articles may be candidates for deletion, or may not be suitable for copy-editing at this time for other reasons. The {{GOCEreviewed}} tag can be placed on any article you find to be totally uneditable, and you can nominate for deletion any that you discover to be copyright violations or completely unintelligible. If you need help deciding what to do, please contact any of the coordinators. Thank you for participating in the March 2012 drive! All contributions are appreciated. Our next copy-edit drive will be in May. Easy coords
Hi. Long time. I saw this. There's an easy way:
{{coord|0000000000000000000000|type:landmark|display=title}}
When you "what's here" at google maps, and it gives you, say 19.983964,110.329278 you can just copy it, double click the zeros to highlight, and paste in the 19.983964,110.329278 Then, all you need to do is swap the comma for a | easy. Best, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 15:06, 18 April 2012 (UTC)
Could use some coords here: Haitang Bay.
Also, if you have a picture of Phoenix Island, let me know. Google maps show that it sure has developed. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 15:17, 18 April 2012 (UTC)
- Long time indeed :) I am in the old country so if you need anything done that circumvents the GFW let me know.
- For coords I found this site [1] that gives the decimals - quite cool really.
- I have no pics of Phoenix Island but when I was there last year it had really developed - most of the "gherkin" was complete.
Hainan related questions
Hello, my friend. A couple of things:
- Looking for official websites for: Hainan Exhibition & Convention Center and Haikou Great Hall of the People
- Is this Hainan Television? If not, what is it, and how does it fit into the scheme of things?
- Talk:China National Highway 098
- Talk:Chinese table manners (last two threads))
Many thanks for any help you can provide. :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 09:44, 20 April 2012 (UTC)
1) No websites for these two as far as I know or can find out - Hainan International Exhibition Center (Chinese: 海南国际会展中心) has an entry on Baidu.
2) Not sure what you mean by the question "is this Hainan TV?" If you mean does the info relate to the local station I have no idea as I never watch TV :) There is no Chinese Wiki entry for Hainan TV (海南电视台).
3) Highways - not sure as I don't have a copy of a certain book with a map to hand.
4) "Etiquette of Chinese dining" is probably the most concise way to do it - section order seems fine.
Sorry, not much useful information I'm afraid. Now, if you were to ask me a question about this ... :) ► Philg88 ◄ talk 14:28, 20 April 2012 (UTC)
- 1) Ok thanks.
- 2) Is HBN the owner of Hainan Television? Is Hainan Television and Hainan TV the same? Pass on that question if TV is a foreign concept to you. (It's an electric box with a glass front. Most restaurants have one going.) :)
- 3) No worries on that one.
- 4) But it's sort of about the whole dining experience. Would love a catch-all title.
- Thanks. :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 23:34, 20 April 2012 (UTC)

GOCE May copy edit drive
Invitation from the Guild of Copy Editors
The Guild of Copy Editors invites you to participate in their May 2012 Backlog elimination drive, a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy edit backlog. The drive begins on May 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and ends on May 31 at 23:59 (UTC). Our goal for the drive will be to eliminate January, February, and March 2011 from the queue. Barnstars will be awarded to anyone who copy edits more than 4,000 words, and special awards will be given to the top 5 in the following categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", and "Number of articles of over 5,000 words". We hope to see you there! – Your drive coordinators: Dank, Diannaa, and Stfg. To discontinue receiving GOCE newsletters, please remove your name from our mailing list. Disambiguation link notification for April 24
Hi. When you recently edited Zhoushan, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Qishan (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Qin, again
Hi Phil, mind weighing in on a dispute at Talk:Qin (state)? The issue is one user's use of a website-based citation (guoxue.com) in the article. You can read more over there. Thanks for your input. White Whirlwind 咨 10:08, 9 May 2012 (UTC)

I saw that you were listed at Wikipedia:PRV. Would you mind coming by to help Jayne Mansfield? Her article needs a lot of work. The problem remains that she existed a long time ago, so sources are lacking, but I noticed many sentences are awkwardly written. The article seems misleading or even confusing in some parts. GOCE May mid-drive newsletter
Guild of Copy Editors May 2012 backlog elimination drive mid-drive newsletter
Participation: Out of 49 people signed up for this drive so far, 26 have copy-edited at least one article. It's a smaller group than last drive, but we're making good progress. If you've signed up but haven't yet copy-edited any articles, please consider doing so. Every bit helps! If you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us! Progress report: We're on track to meet our targets for the drive, largely due to the efforts of Lfstevens and the others on the leaderboard. Thanks to all. We have reduced our target group of articles—January, February, and March 2011—by over half, and it looks like we will achieve that goal. Good progress is being made on the overall backlog as well, with over 500 articles copy-edited during the drive so far. The total backlog currently sits at around 3200 articles. Hall of Fame: GOCE coordinator Diannaa was awarded a spot in the GOCE Hall of Fame this month! She has copy-edited over 1567 articles during these drives, and surpassed the 1,000,000-word mark on May 5. Zhou Dynasty
- Hello, Philg88. I am Michelle. I don't think we should keep articles about those kings about whom we know only their dates. We should redirect their pages to the main page. This is not my personal idea, but an opinion of one other user.--Mychele (talk) 08:02, 27 May 2012 (UTC)
Hi Michelle, thanks for the message. The idea of Wikipedia is to build an encyclopedia, not to finish it. Maybe today we only know a little bit about some topics, but over the next 100 years and beyond more detail will be added. Creating stub articles is a necessary part of this process. Once created, deleting these articles is counter-productive and also tends to create circular links (as did your edits on the Zhou articles. Best regards, ► Philg88 ◄ talk 09:15, 27 May 2012 (UTC)
- Oh, OK, then. User:KAVEBEAR is the user I mentioned above. He deleted many articles about Hawaiian chiefs because some of them were stubs. Would you tell him to create articles again? You see, it was not my wish to delete Zhou articles.--Mychele (talk) 09:20, 27 May 2012 (UTC)
Please don't delete any more Zhou articles. A number of editors have put a lot of effort into improving coverage of ancient China and deleting their work is impolite to say the least. If someone "tells" you to do something on Wikipedia please check that it fits with existing policies first. I will contact User:KAVEBEAR. Best, ► Philg88 ◄ talk 09:26, 27 May 2012 (UTC)
- Oh, thank you. I don't want, however, that you have problems because of me.--Mychele (talk) 09:47, 27 May 2012 (UTC)
Mychele, this is not the way to get attention on wikipedia. You don't use what I did and apply it to other articles to get other users to placate me to restore my deletions of articles that have major problems. I never told you to delete any articles on the Zhou kings, who are more notable than mythological Hawaiian kings and queens. The articles I deleted were in violation of copyright rules of Wikiepdia; they mix fact with fiction; and they should have never been created in the first place. Also the method of numbering the rulers is actually a made up concept by the author of the Royal ark site that no Hawaiian historian would agree with. I move them to my userspace, so I can still refer back to them if I ever decided to recreate them but as of now they can't exist on wikipedia in their current state and shouldn't be linked to other articles.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 09:48, 27 May 2012 (UTC)
- Oh, I didn't know that situation was so bad. Now I understand that many of Hawaiian chiefs were pure mythical beings. I just had a wrong opinion about you, Hawaii and Zhou. I am sorry. Forgive me, KAVEBEAR, we shouldn't be enemies anymore.-Michele — Preceding unsigned comment added by 93.138.96.156 (talk) 11:24, 27 May 2012 (UTC)

- Looks like the issue has been settled. The only thing left was the Geng Ding redirect, which I reverted. The Zhou kings are on my to-do list. It's just there are so many other ancient rulers that need articles. -Zanhe (talk) 06:29, 28 May 2012 (UTC)

你会中文吧?“齐东野语”出自古汉语,其中的“野”不是“野蛮”的“野”,而是“乡野”的“野”。不是“野”是乡下人,而是“野人”。古汉语的“野人”与标准现代汉语的“野人”意思不同。--113.227.222.242 (talk) 03:57, 29 May 2012 (UTC)

Elizabeth of Bosnia copy-editing
Hello! I saw your name on Wikipedia:Peer review/volunteers#General copyediting and noticed that you are interested in history and biographies. Could you please do some copy-editing at Elizabeth of Bosnia? I've spent several months working on the article both in 2010 and in 2012. I am not a native speaker of English so the article might benefit from your attention. Let me know if you have time to deal with it. Thanks :) Surtsicna (talk) 19:16, 20 June 2012 (UTC)
- Hi, that's a nicely structured article, well done! I've copyedited about half of it but unfortunately I have other things that need my attention. Best, ► Philg88 ◄ talk 06:59, 21 June 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot! I suppose I should contact another editor to do the rest. Cheers! Surtsicna (talk) 17:20, 21 June 2012 (UTC)
