Re: Directory-fication of Bangladeshi topics

Thanks for your idea. This is good. I have also been trying to persuade more people into working on Wikipedia's Bangladesh/Bangla related articles, with almost no success. After my initial posts, I even had to revert a spate of vandalism from some people, who created a mess. Anyway, I like the idea of a directory, and I think the best way to organize things would be to use the page Wikipedia:WikiProject Bangladesh page. We can list articles there, and also have a to-do section of articles, requested articles etc. I think there are now 3-4 people regularly writing articles on Bangladesh, so co-ordinating should not be a big problem. This being summer, I can and regularly do devote a lot of time to wikipedia, and I can do 3-5 articles per week. Let's have the list of Bangladesh related articles in the wikiproject page first, I'll add what I find there, then we can sort, categorize etc. Thanks once again for participating in wikipedia. --Ragib 11:12, 26 May 2005 (UTC)

Copyvios

The copyvios aren't minor they are entire sentences and paragpahs of text, the page must be deleted since they were there when you put the page into Wikipedia. Rewrite a clean version on the temp page.--nixie 23:58, 18 July 2005 (UTC)

I'm not sure where you stand on intellectual honesty, but the article is mostly a paraphrase of the ODNB entry. The copyvio policy is not mine its wikipedias. This is the worst example.

Your text:

Brydon was awarded medals for his service in Jalalabad, Kabul, Burma, and Lucknow. In 1858, he was appointed a Companion of the Bath. The following year, he retired from the service of the Company with the rank of surgeon-general, and settled down in the Scottish Highlands. He died in 1873 at the age of 61 in his home in Westfield, Ross-shire. His wife, Colina Maxwell Brydon, survived him.

ODNB:

Brydon was awarded medals for his service in Jalalabad, Kabul, Burma, and Lucknow, and in 1858 was appointed a companion of the Bath. In the following year he retired from the Indian service. He settled in the highlands of Scotland, and in 1862 became honorary surgeon to the Highland rifle militia. He died at his home, Westfield House, Nigg, Ross-shire, on 20 March 1873, and was buried in the same month at the Rosemarkie burial-ground. His wife, Colina Maxwell Brydon, survived him. --nixie 00:10, 19 July 2005 (UTC)

If someone has one of my sources and reads my article and can see where I've just reorganised the word order, I think thats pretty clearly plagarism. There is however no policy on plagarism, and it is not a clear copyvio since some ofhte text is not in the ODNB entry (I don't have easy access to the other sources to check them). I think you should rewrite anything that you know is a bit too close the the original phrasing, but otherwise it's OK to take down the copyvio notice.--nixie 23:02, 19 July 2005 (UTC)

Districts of Bangladesh

Please check out task 6 and 7 on the Bangladesh Project page. Help us out if you have time. Thanks. -- Urnonav 9 July 2005 12:29 (UTC)

I started a discussion on the common format for District articles in Talk:Districts of Bangladesh. Please participate in the discussion and add your ideas. Thanks. --Ragib 00:14, 17 July 2005 (UTC)

Ok, I finished creating articles on all 64 districts, added a navigation template to almost all, and have inserted the standard sections to most of them. Now is the time for some other volunteers to insert information into them, may be taking stats/info from Banglapedia and paraphrasing that. You can start by taking over any articles from the nav template at Template:Subdivisions of Bangladesh. --Ragib 06:49, 22 July 2005 (UTC)

Lionel Davidson

Hi there.. just wanted to ask about the recent change to the Davidson article.. might I ask your source for the Kingston on Hull reference? --Peripatetic 20:11, 26 July 2005 (UTC)

I'm doing disambiguation link repair. If you check into the link in my edit comments, you'll see the project I'm working on. The basic idea is that we don't want links pointing to disambiguation pages as much as possible, but rather we want them pointing to the real page for what they reference. In the specific case, I was working through all articles that point to "Hull". Many were references to ship hulls. Many were to the city Hull, Yorkshire, England. A few were to a former city named Hull in Quebec.
For the Hull in Yorkshire, from the Hull Disambiguation page, the correct link is actually titled Kingston on Hull. I have no idea why it's called that, but that's the correct page for that city. And the Lionel Davidson page was obviously referring to that Hull, so I updated the link.
So in the end, no external source, but extending information already in the Davidson and Hull Disambiguation pages to properly execute the project to improve Wikepedia. TexasAndroid 21:21, 26 July 2005 (UTC)

Hi

I see you've been editing cricket-related articles recently. Have you see the Cricket WikiProject yet? It's a group of cricket-loving Wikipedians who use the WikiProject both to collaborate and to highlight to others what they're doing. You'd be more than welcome to sign up and join, jguk 19:17, 27 August 2005 (UTC)

It seems you started the article on Dr Muzaffar Ahamed. I might be interested in working on this article, but I'm not sure which Muzaffar Ahamed this is. Is this the curent Chairman of National Awami Party (Bangladesh) or am I totally off the mark here? Then again, he's not a professor at IBA, although that's the first Muzaffar Ahmed that comes to my mind. Thanks,

Urnonav 08:28, 1 September 2005 (UTC)

Yeah there is NAP neta Muzaffar Ahmed. And then there is economist Muzaffar Ahmed. The two are different. I don't know too much myself about the first one. The second one is an economist and university professor. If you can find any info, you could do both! --Peripatetic 08:36, 1 September 2005 (UTC)

Mohiner Ghoraguli

I'm sorry, but I myself know very little about the old band (though I remember winning points at a quiz by identifying a song as have been sung by MG). You can try [1] for album cover, though it's rather small. Incidentally, I've been hunting around quite long for the song "Prithibita Naki Chhoto Hote Hote Satellite Ar Cable-er hate" but can't seem to get it. If you have it then can you send it to me? You are also welcome to contribute to the Chandrabindu article. Loom91 17:10, 4 September 2005 (UTC)

Unsourced images

You have many images listed as being un-sourced. See User:Pearle/by-author-Category:Images_with_unknown_source.txt for a nice, wikified list of them. (Search for your name). If you do not add a source, they will probably all be deleted really soon(as in, people are deleting images in this category - RIGHT NOW). JesseW, the juggling janitor 09:19, 21 September 2005 (UTC)

A lot of those pics are more than 50 yrs old. Mainly because the writers themselves have been dead for longer than that. -- Peripatetic 22:50, 21 September 2005 (UTC)
The critical year is 1923 (See Public domain). That's the general year for things going out of copyright. If you are sure that the subject had died before that date, the picture should be pretty safely assumed to be public domain - of course, a source is still necessary to be sure that the picture does in fact, show the person in question. ;-) But if you can remember where you got any of those pictures, it would be a great help - then the remaining issue would be if we have a legal license to use them. Otherwise they will be deleted, sadly. JesseW, the juggling janitor 17:20, 22 September 2005 (UTC)

Image Tagging Image:Betjbw.jpg

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Betjbw.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. -- Longhair 11:57, 1 February 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading Image:248797-music-resized200.JPG. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. Just give me a couple of days. I'll have to look for the images you are looking for. That assured I'd like to volunteer a few suggestions:

  • Please, cite the sources for all the information you (and other editors) have put into the article. It is imperative that FA articles are amply referenced and cited.
  • Submit the article as GA nominee first, and work on the feedback you get there. It's the first step towards an FA status.
  • Before submtting it to GA nomination, you may well try a peer review, and then work on the feedback.
  • And, may be before that you make sure that it conformas to the manual of style.
  • When other editors have taken a look at it (if you need, you can invite potential reviewers to take a look at it, you may well get a good copyeditor to run through it.
  • Here goes a few useful pages on the Wikipedia that would come handy, if you really want drive for an FA:
FAs are the hallmarks of Wikipedia quality, they need to be extra good, and I am happy to see someone volunteering for that hard work.
  • A few more ideas:
    • Add an suitable biographical infobox (find one at Wikipedia:WikiProject Biography)
    • Gather as many works of Das as possible (essays, novels, short fictions, plays)
    • Move Banalata Sen to a new page
    • Take a look at some of the writer articles to get a better idea (you find plenty at Wikipedia:WikiProject Biography/Arts and entertainment)
    • Make the leader a summary of the whole article, ideally consisting more than one paragraph.
    • Early life and Life in Calcutta (that would be Kolkata) should become parts of Biography
    • The political part of his life should be a part of Biography, not Literary style.
    • You would absolutely need critical assesment (by famous critics, of course with appropriate references and citations) and if possible criticism of Das's work to make the article complete.

Great going. Cheers. Aditya Kabir 20:01, 28 May 2007 (UTC)

I can offer to volunteer for two things - (1) I can get books on this end and use them to assist you, since I live in Bangladesh; and (2) I can post to editors who may take an interest. I would have jumped right in, but that too will have to wait a few days (like the images). Cheers. Aditya Kabir 20:41, 28 May 2007 (UTC)

Notability of Talk:Billmon

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Talk:Billmon, by 151.197.244.202 (talk · contribs), another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Talk:Billmon seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Talk:Billmon, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Author.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 7 days after this notification, per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. MER-C 07:03, 17 July 2007 (UTC)

Notability of Jessica Warner

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Jessica Warner, by Drivenapart (talk · contribs), another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Jessica Warner seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Jessica Warner, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. --Android Mouse Bot 2 09:56, 24 July 2007 (UTC)

Hi, I'd like to draw your attention to Bangladesh portal. I have tried to address the concerns in earlier peer review and checked the portal against Featured portal criteria. Based on this I think it is proper time to push for Featured Portal status for Bangladesh Portal, which will be an important milestone for WikiProject Bangladesh. But to achieve this I need help from you. Please participate in the on-going discussion on the talk page and give me your valuable inputs.-Arman Aziz 03:37, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

Theatre box

Thanks for your Curtain plaudits on theatre infobox and questions about the London theatre template. Sorry for the delay in replying, I have been on a technology free Sabbatical, for two weeks (that's a holiday to anyone else).

This probably gets more complicated than it needs to be:

  1. Wiltons - this is not on the London theatre template because it doesn't seem to currently be in regular use. It should probably be added to 'Fringe and Suburban', and that's my omission (because I wrote it!); still in two minds, as it's not an active theatre producing/receiving centre and when it does do things, it is more usually opera.
  1. Bush and Theatre Royal East; again an interest because I fiddled with the latter and expanded Theatre Workshop (not all covered in Joan Littlewood article). These went into 'Fringe and Suburban', because that's what they essentially are. Yes, they have an impact out of proportion to their category, but you have to draw the line somewhere, and I see that template as being about the current theatre scene. There's probably room somewhere for an article about important developments in London theatre, and a historical timeline (there's probably a book, or two, in it!).

The past month, or so, I have also become busy in real life - and that's been interfering with my wiki writing. Sometimes, it's no bad thing to step back from these things, my views change. If I do get time, I want to complete the rollout of the infobox to suburban theatres, write an article on Studio theatre (currently a disamb to theatres), contribute to London articles and generally have far greater ambitions than I can possibly have time for! Kbthompson 08:25, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

Responding to your suggestion I have now transformed your stub into a 750 word article covering all the bases. Although my guess is that few will look beyond the Daphne du Maurier article when seeking information about the play.

I wonder, do we know each other?

Best wishes John Thaxter 18:23, 6 October 2007 (UTC)

Beverley Baxter

Having quoted extensively from Beverley Baxter's review of The Years Between prompted me to look at Baxter's wiki article, only to find no mention of his role as a theatre enthusiast, failed playwright, overwrought theatre critic and victim of Milton Shulman and Ken Tynan.

I have repaired the omission with a new paragraph London theatre critic that you may find amusing.

Best wishes, John Thaxter 09:46, 7 October 2007 (UTC)

DYK

Updated DYK query On 10 December, 2007, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Augustine Podmore Williams, which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

Keep up the great work! --Royalbroil 04:17, 10 December 2007 (UTC)

Chains (play)

Hi,

Were you planning on creating Chains (play) in the near future? If not, the redlink should probably be removed. There's no reason to have a redlink on a disambiguation page. The line itself could stay I suppose, probably not as a link. WLU (talk) 18:42, 12 December 2007 (UTC)

Dear Peripatetic (Have we met? I think I asked you that before),
Thanks for the Chains (play) page. You have already linked my Stage review to that page, so you have my reaction to the play and Auriol's production. I was glad you have also created a page for Auriol Smith. I have edited it sightly, adding her involvement with the BBC Radio Drama Repertory Company (sadly now disbanded, although Ellen Dryden's First/Writes independent production company has taken up some of the slack).
I also added that Sam is not only Auriol's husband and co-founder of the Orange Tree but is also its Artistic Director.
I have created a major new page about the Orange Tree Theatre itself, but all about the history and the building. I have been working with people at the theatre hoping to resolve the matter of how we feature the repertory and the major productions, but they tend to be too busy to help, and it takes forever to go through my archives.
Best wishes John Thaxter (talk) 17:21, 13 December 2007 (UTC)

Theatre assistance

Thanks for your offer of help.

I am currently being asked to deliver an upgrade to the Anton Rodgers page. I have details of his CV from the start until 1979, when Theatre Who's Who disappeared from our bookshelves. I have scanned the relevant page which now sits reproachfully on my laptop. But it badly needs translation into wiki format. I can email you the scanned page if that will not breach your peripatetic anonymity!

Otherwise I shall slog on to the end - although much distracted at the moment by a dozen Christmas shows I have to review for The Stage.

Beyond the 1979 Who's Who CV I would then have to translate from my own 1980 index and copies of the Theatre Record (1981-2006) annual indexes. Do you also happen to have access to the latter? It would be a great help if you do, as otherwise I seem to be the sole User source of London theatre details on wiki, which is a terrible responsiblity! John Thaxter (talk) 15:28, 14 December 2007 (UTC)

Auriol Smith

I have greatly enlarged your article on Auriol Smith qv. John Thaxter (talk) 12:18, 24 December 2007 (UTC)

Now what about one on her husband Sam Walters? John Thaxter (talk) 12:49, 24 December 2007 (UTC)

Orange Tree Theatre

Over Christmas I have added an article on Sam Walters, amplified Auriol Smith's page still further, and done much work on the Orange Tree Theatre page. For these three I am awaiting programme listings for the early years in the Room Above the Pub - the Richmond Fringe period from1971, which is nowhere documented other than in the Orange Tree archives. Sam has promised to provide these!

I have also done related work on the articles for Alec McCowen, Martin Crimp, Geoffrey Beevers, Christopher Hampton and Harley Granville Barker, all of whom have links with the Orange Tree.

I welcome your London theatre endeavours and have done a small editing job on your three new pages, opening out the paragraphs for easier reading and access. In the case of David Salter I have provided References and a couple of useful links - as a result of which I was able to delete the 'Unreferenced' editorial flag at the top of the article - I hope that's okay.

But the problem of your three new articles, as they stand, is a general lack of firm information, sources, dates and venues. This of course would be helped by access to Theatre Record listings or the artiste's agent! I may manage to do a few for you, but it is very hard work.

Best wishes for 2008. Yours John Thaxter (talk) 13:07, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Kundu poster.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Kundu poster.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 23:58, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

Anton Rodgers

In an idle moment I took over the chore of transferring Anton Rodgers' Theatre Who's Who CV to the Wiki page.

It also gave me the opportunity to do some tidying of the Monty Norman page (mainly about his SWET award in 1982 for Songbook — I was on the judging panel at the time, so I had insider knowledge!). I also linked the Northcott Theatre, Exeter page to The Stage news reports on the current round of ACE funding cuts. Hope all is well with you. Best wishes John Thaxter (talk) 15:05, 12 January 2008 (UTC)

Orange Tree

Thanks for your note. I did not get to the Hackney panto, but my review of The Woman Hater (linked from the Orange Tree wiki article) can be found on The Stage website at [2]. Sam Walters told me that he did cut Burney's repetitive text, but probably not enough.

Sam's reaction to the proposed ACE funding cut was neatly summed up in his letter to the Evening Standard - see the Friday edition. I believe it will also be featured this Sunday in the regular British Theatre Guide update. The Orange Tree and the Bush are both getting such high level support from the industry that I suspect their grants will be maintained, but not increased as they might otherwise have reasonably expected given the big hike in the government's contribution to arts funding by ACE.

I am not sure how we can reflect all this on wikipedia. I would not wish to add it to the Orange Tree article, since it is transient information, although I think The Stage link I made as a ref from the Northcott Exeter page is perhaps the best way of tackling it encyclopedically. A tag has been placed on Louis Alexandre Raimon, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. If you plan to expand the article, you can request that administrators wait a while for you to add contextual material. To do this, affix the template {{hangon}} to the article and state your intention on the article's talk page. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Tim Clancy (footballer), and it appears to be very similar to another wikipedia page: Tim Clancy. It is possible that you have accidentally duplicated contents, or made an error while creating the page— you might want to look at the pages and see if that is the case.

This message was placed automatically, and it is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article and it would be appreciated if you could drop a note on the maintainer's talk page. CorenSearchBot (talk) 13:08, 12 July 2008 (UTC)
