I believe the consensus here was delete not redirect. If it is to be redirect the article history needs to be deleted. LibStar (talk) 08:54, 5 February 2023 (UTC)

No one really addressed the redirect issue, though the last !vote touched on some of those implications. It's a pretty standard blank and redirect as an alternative to deletion, and the resulting redirect meets subtopic criterion for redirects. Unless you have a better redirect target or there's something extraordinary about the article (e.g. BLP, copyvio), I don't see an issue with the close. ---- Patar knight - chat/contributions 17:00, 5 February 2023 (UTC)

Help with vandal

Hello, I saw over at ANI that you’re active so I was hoping that you could take action with User:Woobie2009 who is aggressively swapping out photos of politicians with worse ones, has been reverted dozens of times, warned twice, and yet has given no indication of stopping. Clearly not here to build an encyclopedia. Best, - Cpotisch (talk) 19:58, 20 March 2023 (UTC)

Done I've blocked them for 48 hours to encourage discussion per WP:BRD. I haven't looked into the pictures themselves, so don't have thoughts on the underlying merits, but making the same edits on multiple pages when reverted and warned by other users is textbook WP:DISRUPTIVE behaviour (#4 at WP:DISRUPTSIGNS). It might also be they case that they edit from mobile, since I believe there are technical issues where such editors cannot see talk page messages and notifications. ---- Patar knight - chat/contributions 20:11, 20 March 2023 (UTC)

Hallo Patar Knight

I have summarised some information you and another editor added to this article. My concern is the amount of space given to this which smacks of recentism. It also more logically belongs in the advocacy section because the Doctrine of Discovery is a (disputed) legal doctrine and the Vatican isn't a court of US or International law. It is one of many advocates for change in the residual legal and political effects of the doctrine. Happy to discuss. Aemilius Adolphin (talk) 01:34, 31 March 2023 (UTC)

I don't think recentism is an issue. The stuff I added only really pertained to the major developments in the Catholic Church (i.e. informal repudiation, the context of the announcement that the doctrine would be formally repudiated, and the formal repudiation itself). There are countless news articles over the years about petitions to the Church to repudiate the doctrine that are not included that could honestly form the basis of its own article. Perhaps some of the context I added about the Papal news conference were fine to cut, but I don't think the rest of it falls afoul of WP:RECENTISM. Also, considering the foundation role of the Church in the doctrine, which is discussed in the "History" section, the amount of coverage is not particularly bloated or WP:UNDUE.
I also disagree about it belonging in the advocacy section. That section is full of repudiations of the doctrine by mainly American Protestant Churches that were not foundational in the same way to the doctrine as the Catholic Church was, which is why they are not mentioned in the "History" section. Putting the Catholic position there and only giving marginally more space than to the colllection of Protestant Churches seems more of a WP:FALSEBALANCE issue than the content I added. Furthermore, leaving it out of the "History" leaves readers with the inaccurate assumption that the history of the Catholic Church's position ends with the bulls. -- Patar knight - chat/contributions 05:50, 31 March 2023 (UTC)
As the article points out, the consensus of scholarship is that from the fifteenth century, the Vatican didn't play a major role in the development of international law regarding discovery. The law, like most international law, developed through state practice, particularly that of England, Spain and the Netherlands, who didn't care much what the Vatican said. The "doctrine of discovery" is a disputed interpretation of that state practice articulated by the US Supreme Court in 1823, and I don't think the Supreme Court consulted the Vatican for its opinion. The way the article is structured is to provide a history of the development of the law regarding discovery up to the time that John Marshall of the Supreme Court articulated his "doctrine of discovery". It then gives a summary of the legal development of the doctrine in North America (where it was obviously most influential). Then it gives a brief history on recent activism against the doctrine. The Vatican states that its early bulls were misused by European powers, some such as Sublimus Deus were ignored, and that it renounces the doctrine of discovery. The renunciation is stated in the lead of the article so no one reading it will be under the impression that the Vatican condones the doctrine. The events leading up to this public renunciation are inextricably tied up with the recent advocacy against the doctrine by various secular and religious groups and are best presented in this context. I'm concerned that this article is losing its focus as an article about a legal doctrine, and recent legal developments in this doctrine. It's becoming a repository of news items about various religious groups vying with each other in acts of public repentance. Aemilius Adolphin (talk) 02:50, 1 April 2023 (UTC)
I see your point about article structure, but in that case, the "History" section should probably be renamed to something like "Background" or "Historical background", because "History" sections are typically for complete histories. The point still stands though, that the Catholic position is far more important than these various Protestant Churches, which is reflected by the fact that the number of reliable sources covering their position is orders of magnitude higher. Many of the Protestant churches mentioned are barely mentioned in RSs in respect to the doctrine, and often only in the context of the repudiation, with little coverage of campaigns to get them to change their position, unlike in the Catholic context. Right now there's a WP:FALSEBALANCE in favour of the Protestant churches. Perhaps it would be better to add sub-sections for Catholic and non-Catholic denominations as a first step. ---- Patar knight - chat/contributions 07:13, 2 April 2023 (UTC)
I agree that there's too much detailed information on protests by small protestant Church groups. When I get around to it, I intend to summarise the information on Advocacy and put in some general statements on the significance of the movement against the doctrine. It should be easy to find a couple of articles in reliable sources which have given an overview of the issue. I've discussed this with another editor and hope we can get something done before long. Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, editors indefinitely site-banned by community consensus will now have all rights, including sysop, removed.
  • As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.

Technical news

  • Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.

Renaming request

Hello.

Can you change the name of Gatineau LRT to Gatineau Tramway? The projected tramway network's official name in French is "Tramway de Gatineau" and consequently its English translation is "Gatineau Tramway". It is not going to be named "Transit léger sur rail de Gatineau" or "TLR de Gatineau", hence Gatineau LRT. (Example: Quebec City Tramway, which is under construction.)

Yours sincerely, 31.200.18.125 (talk) 20:01, 11 June 2023 (UTC)

The STO website's English version on this project [1] calls it the "Tramway Gatineau-Ottawa". Would that be a better name? That page also makes it clear that it will be an all-tram project, so a renaming would make sense, but I want to get the name right. ---- Patar knight - chat/contributions 15:46, 12 June 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for clarifying. Waiting for the final official name makes sense. It looks very likely that "TLR" and "LRT" will not be included in the name. 31.200.18.125 (talk) 16:06, 12 June 2023 (UTC)
Be aware this IP has made the exact same request to multiple editors and admins - WP:FORUMSHOP 10mmsocket (talk) 17:17, 12 June 2023 (UTC)
Did not see that. In that case, it is probably best to discuss on the talk page and/or start a RM then. ---- Patar knight - chat/contributions 19:09, 12 June 2023 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – September 2023

News and updates for administrators from the past month (August 2023).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, TFAs will be automatically semi-protected the day before it is on the main page and through the day after.
  • A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that [s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. But oversight could well be right where there's a particularly high risk to the person. Use your judgment.

Technical news

Arbitration

  • The SmallCat dispute case has closed. As part of the final decision, editors participating in XfD have been reminded to be careful about forming local consensus which may or may not reflect the broader community consensus. Regular closers of XfD forums were also encouraged to note when broader community discussion, or changes to policies and guidelines, would be helpful.

Miscellaneous

  • Tech tip: The "Browse history interactively" banner shown at the top of Special:Diff can be used to easily look through a history, assemble composite diffs, or find out what archive something wound up in.

Wikiproject Military history coordinator election nominations open

Nominations for the upcoming project coordinator election have opened. A team of up to ten coordinators will be elected for the next coordination year. The project coordinators are the designated points of contact for issues concerning the project, and are responsible for maintaining our internal structure and processes. They do not, however, have any authority over article content or editor conduct, or any other special powers. More information on being a coordinator is available here. If you are interested in running, please sign up here by 23:59 UTC on 14 September! Voting will commence on 15 September. If you have any questions, you can contact any member of the current coord team. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 02:05, 2 September 2023 (UTC)
