Dunwich contradiction

Hi Owen, sorry to bother you. I saw you tagged Dunwich for contradicting itself and I hoped that you were intending to go back to Talk:Dunwich and enlighten us? That would be great ... I've had a quick look and abjectly failed to pick it up, so a steer would be very useful, please. Thanks and best wishes DBaK (talk) 23:22, 4 January 2018 (UTC)

@DBaK: No need to apologise, I should have posted on Talk:Dunwich at the time, shouldn't I? I have done so now; I hope that helps :) — OwenBlacker (talk; please {{ping}} me in replies) 08:47, 8 January 2018 (UTC)
Thank you so much, that's brilliant. I wish I were the person to unravel it all and make it right, but the best I can do is to hope that someone clever will happen along and sort it out! Thanks also for your second edit with the additional link. Good stuff. Cheers DBaK (talk) 20:06, 8 January 2018 (UTC)
Glad it looks useful, at least. Hopefully someone will swing by soon :) — OwenBlacker (talk; please {{ping}} me in replies) 20:18, 8 January 2018 (UTC)

DYK for Bill Dubuque

On 28 January 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Bill Dubuque, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Bill Dubuque. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Bill Dubuque), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Recommendations for your WikiProject AIDS will be delivered soon

Hi OwenBlacker,

Thank you for your interest in using our tool. Sorry about the wait. We've been working on improving our tool in the past several weeks, and we will send recommendations to you very soon. Stay tuned. Thank you! Bobo.03 (talk) 23:18, 7 February 2018 (UTC)

Recommending new editors to your WP AIDS

Hi OwenBlacker,

Our system generated a list of potential new editors for your project. They may be interested in collaborating with your project members on your project's articles. As you will notice, the list contains both experienced editors and newcomers. Both are valuable for Wikipedia and your project. Please go ahead and introduce your project to them, and point them to some project tasks to start with. We also provide a template invitation message to make it easier to contact the potential new editors. Just click the invite link to write the invitation message.

We'd appreciate it if you could fill the survey to let us know what you think about our recommendations so we can improve our system.

An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Cécile Hernandez, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Endurance race (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). It's not a duplicate of using {{lang}} as the latter does not make a Wiktionary link. It's now in use. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 17:56, 15 April 2018 (UTC)

@Koavf: It's not {{lang}} that it duplicates, but {{wikt-lang}}. I've updated the uses you added to use {{wikt-lang}} and checked they actually have Wiktionary entries. Sorry, we were both editing simultaneously and I took forever checking (as I was eating dinner during it all), so I've overwritten your work; I wasn't trying to be as passive-aggressive as that probably comes across. — OwenBlacker (talk; please {{ping}} me in replies) 19:37, 15 April 2018 (UTC)
(And sorry; I assumed that {{db-meta}} would handle a sensible includeonly version of the template, but deletion templates are often really terrible and useful inline messaging.) — OwenBlacker (talk; please {{ping}} me in replies) 19:39, 15 April 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for this! I've made several of these templates and always knew that I should supersede them some day--glad to see that someone did the good and efficient work. My computer is pretty busted now so editing is cumbersome but I'll replace these soon and request their speedy deletion. Thanks, Owen. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 19:59, 15 April 2018 (UTC)
@Koavf: No problem — and again, sorry if I've come across as confrontational; that's not been my intention. There's a handful of people being putting effort into language templates recently, pticly User:Erutuon, who created {{wikt-lang}}, and User:Trappist the monk, who's done a boatload of work on Module:LangOwenBlacker (talk; please {{ping}} me in replies) 20:06, 15 April 2018 (UTC)
Confrontational?! Not at all--very polite and helpful. Redundant templates should be deleted and alerting me to a more elegant solution makes things easier on me. Thanks again. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 20:09, 15 April 2018 (UTC)

Hello. I know they were done in good faith, but you made several errors in the edits of existing citations. (1) a company name that is trademarked and copyrighted in capital letters was lower-cased; (2) misspelling of Wynonna Earp in the title of one source was corrected and the name italicized in sources that had not done so -- a title identifies a published work and the entirety of the work is copyrighted, including the title; (3) an all upper case title was lower-cased; however, per the Chicago Manual of Style, AP, MLA, and APA guides regarding title case: nouns, pronouns, verbs, adverbs, adjectives, and subordinate conjunctions are capitalized. I think it would be wise to first check a source to see how it published a title before altering it in the citation template because doing so can result in a WP:COPYVIO. Pyxis Solitary yak 10:43, 1 October 2018 (UTC)

@Pyxis Solitary: Hey, thanks for posting. I'm afraid you've misunderstood the Manual of Style. These kinds of edits to citations are wholly unrelated to WP:COPYVIO (which relates to article content not the precision of a citation thereto) and indeed are recommended according to MOS:QUOTE:

However, trivial spelling and typographic errors should simply be corrected without comment ..., unless the slip is contextually important.

and MOS:ALLCAPS:

Reduce newspaper headlines and other titles from all caps to title case – or to sentence case if required by the citation style established in the article. For example, replace the headline or title "WAR BEGINS TODAY" with "War Begins Today" or, if necessary, "War begins today".

OwenBlacker (talk; please {{ping}} me in replies) 14:46, 1 October 2018 (UTC)
I appreciate your response, but I don't think I've misunderstood the manual.
MOS:QUOTE is specifically about quotations, not the article titles of online and print media sources. In any event, even if they were quotations, the section states: "the wording of the quoted text should be faithfully reproduced."
MOS:ALLCAPS stating: "Reduce newspaper headlines and other titles from all caps to title case", means a combination of upper and lower case.
When I cite a French-language source, for example, I don't alter the title case style which (unless it contains a proper name) is lower case except for the first word. In the English language (as I noted above) nouns, pronouns, verbs, adverbs, adjectives, and subordinate conjunctions are capitalized.
Perhaps the manual could use a section specifically addressing the title case style of cited sources. Pyxis Solitary yak 15:23, 1 October 2018 (UTC)
@Pyxis Solitary: We may have to agree to differ. As I mentioned earlier, MOS:QUOTE also says However, trivial spelling and typographic errors should simply be corrected without comment ..., unless the slip is contextually important. Both that and the reduction of all-capitals text make things substantially easier for people with low-level comprehension difficulties (such as astigmatisms and dyslexia) and for assistive technologies, both of which improve the encyclopædia in accordance with our accessibility policies without causing problems in other regards. If you'd like to see the MoS address these issues in greater clarity, then feel free to propose them on the Talk: pages, though I'd appreciate a {{ping}} if you do so. — OwenBlacker (talk; please {{ping}} me in replies) 17:43, 1 October 2018 (UTC)
It's like the Gershwin song Let's Call the Whole Thing Off: "You say eether and I say eyether, You say neether and I say nyther." But I won't be creating any discussions in MOS about it because too often discussions about whatevs turn into nests of hornets. Pyxis Solitary yak 18:02, 1 October 2018 (UTC)
On that we can definitely agree; I generally try to avoid too many of the meta-conversations in here, as they just aren't all that helpful, from where I'm sitting. — OwenBlacker (talk; please {{ping}} me in replies) 19:56, 1 October 2018 (UTC)

Language tagging and italics

Hi - I've noticed that you've language tagged on a bunch of pages, including several language userboxes. This is fine work, but the lang template also introduces italics by default, and I don't think this is appropriate for e.g. userboxes. I think many of these pages are protected now, but do you have any idea how to remove the italics (if you agree they should be)? Kranix (talk | contribs) 20:23, 28 December 2018 (UTC)

@Kranix: Hey, thanks for pinging me. Template:Lang only introduces italics for languages using the Latin script and those should usually be italicised (per MOS:FOREIGNITALIC), but if you want to override that (for names, for example), you can add |italic=no to prevent italics for the whole term or {{noitalic}} within the template call to override it for only part of the foreign text. (Similarly, if you need to force italics for non-Latin-script text, such as a Russian or Greek book name, you could use |italic=yes.) Was there any pticlr instance you were troubled by? — OwenBlacker (talk; please {{ping}} me in replies) 20:43, 28 December 2018 (UTC)
They should be in running English text, but I don't believe they should in userboxes, which are independent textual entities and not really a part of the user page text. You can look at your own boxes, but the two first userboxes below look wrong to me, while the last one, not language tagged, looks fine. The first two are also protected, though, and so are many of the others you've tagged, so I can't really add anything, and I can't really file edit requests on all affected templates without AWB or some other right I don't have. @Kranix: All the userboxes should be language-tagged, but I don't have strong feelings either way on the italics, tbh. If you were to propose it on Template talk:Userbox-level, then someone with template-editing privileges and AWB could probably pick the task up. — OwenBlacker (talk; please {{ping}} me in replies) 22:09, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
