Hello, Oronsay. I wanted to let you know that I’m proposing an article that you started, Susan Mitchell (Australian author), for deletion because I don't think it meets our criteria for inclusion. If you don't want the article deleted:
- edit the page
- remove the text that looks like this:
{{proposed deletion/dated...}}
- save the page
Also, be sure to explain why you think the article should be kept in your edit summary or on the article's talk page. If you don't do so, it may be deleted later anyway.
You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions.

ArbCom 2017 election voter message
Hello, Oronsay. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
If you wish to participate in the 2017 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 3 December 2017 (UTC)

Deletion discussion about Jeni Thornley
Hello, Oronsay,
I wanted to let you know that there's a discussion about whether Jeni Thornley should be deleted. Your comments are welcome at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Jeni Thornley .
If you're new to the process, articles for deletion is a group discussion (not a vote!) that usually lasts seven days. If you need it, there is a guide on how to contribute. Last but not least, you are highly encouraged to continue improving the article; just be sure not to remove the tag about the deletion nomination from the top.
Thanks,

Question
I was wondering why you were adding red links for only some of the entries in 2018 Australia Day Honours. I created a page for Maree Teesson, but I can't create pages at anything like the speed that you are adding red links. Do you intend to write these pages yourself? If not, why add so many red links, and why for only some of the entries? Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 08:17, 7 February 2018 (UTC)
- Hi Pdfpdf. Thank you for creating the Maree Teesson article so promptly. I have gathered an amount of research for most of the other links I created today. Initially I was adding all the recipients of lower orders in the General Division. I now see you've added quite a few of the OAMs. After adding groups of recipients I checked for links. Then I thought if I create some extra redlinks bots would pick them up and include them on lists of redlinks from which someone might create articles. However, I take your point and will revert to only making links when I am ready to fill them. I certainly did not wish to offend.--Oronsay (talk) 08:41, 7 February 2018 (UTC)
- No no no no no. No offense taken. I was just puzzled. (BTW, it wasn't me who added the OAMs.) Then I thought if I create some extra redlinks bots would pick them up and include them on lists of redlinks from which someone might create articles. - Good plan. I hadn't thought of that. I have gathered an amount of research for most of the other links I created today. - That explains the otherwise seemingly random selection. Jolly good. Have fun. Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 09:18, 7 February 2018 (UTC)
- Pdfpdf - I'm pleased we have a happy resolution! Go well... --Oronsay (talk) 09:29, 7 February 2018 (UTC)

I notice you removed the {{EngvarB}} template, and wondered why. Pdfpdf (talk) 10:37, 7 February 2018 (UTC)
(BTW, I also noticed that there is a {{Use Australian English}} template, but I haven't noticed it at the top of many articles I've edited.) Pdfpdf (talk) 10:37, 7 February 2018 (UTC)
- Apologies. I had a problem with a citation I added and mistakenly believed that the EngvarB had caused it. I've now restored it.
Nice work. Thanks. Pdfpdf (talk) 07:42, 8 February 2018 (UTC)
(Now is probably a good time for me to update the AC page given that we now have pages for all of the ladies.)

Barbara Ramsden Award
Thanks for starting the article, I had compiled a table of most of the winners after writing the Barbara Ramsden article and getting a photo of the award, but I also ran into some discrepancies between sources, which is why I didn't actually start it. I got the Henshaw/Anderson dates from AustLit (subscription only unfortunately, but you can see the dates greyed out!), but I'll look into it and see if I can find a firmer contemporary source. --Canley (talk) 01:05, 16 February 2018 (UTC)
- I see you used AustLit too. I see what you mean, that SA Awards article is from early 1988 and refers to Anderson's win being around that time. I suppose it could be the award being presented in April for the previous year? I also found a reference to Oskar Spate and Patricia Croft winning the award in 1983 for The Spanish Lake, which isn't mentioned here or on AustLit. --Canley (talk) 01:19, 16 February 2018 (UTC)
- Hi Canley Thanks for your feedback. I'm putting this entry on hold for the moment.--Oronsay (talk) 07:19, 16 February 2018 (UTC)

If you would like to move this list to your own User page, you are very welcome. It was originally started by User:Lankiveil but, as he sadly passed away recently, I was helping to go through his subpages trying to publish anything that appeared to be an article draft etc. Not able to think of anything better to do with this list, I just moved it to my user page. But if you want to love and care for it, I'm happy for you to have it. Kerry (talk) 07:55, 18 April 2018 (UTC)
- Kerry, Thank you. That's a kind offer, and I'd like to accept in memory of User:Lankiveil. You will have noticed that I enjoy working with lists. I'll see how I go moving it... and ask for your help if I can't work it out. --Oronsay (talk) 08:52, 18 April 2018 (UTC)
- OK! Let me know if you have a problem. Note that subpages can be a little difficult to find from your main User Page (you look at the lower left of your contribution page to find your subpages -- not something you might think to do!) so I generally create a link from any subpages from my main User Page. Kerry (talk) 09:17, 18 April 2018 (UTC)

Encyclopedia of Women and Leadership in Twentieth-Century Australia links
Hello, thanks for adding these links; I noticed you adding them at the Fiona Wood article. However, I have a couple of formatting quibbles with your additions ... the title of the encyclopedia should be italicised, the birth/death years should have an unspaced en dash between them rather than a spaced hyphen, and the heading title is always "External links", not "External link", even if there is only one. This is all summed up by this edit I made to the Mary Windeyer article. None of these things are *huge* deals ... if you don't want to fix them straight away, they'll probably be fixed by automated/semi-automated processes eventually, but I just thought I'd let you know about them anyway. Graham87 15:44, 19 April 2018 (UTC)
- Graham, Thank you for pointing these three things out. The lack of italics in the encyclopedia title was an oversight on my part and I will correct them all and be more careful in future. I was unaware of the "External links" requirement, which makes total sense and I've noted for future edits. I am, however, aware of Wikipedia's requirement for using unspaced en dashes, but I followed the instructions added to what is now my userspace EWL Article List written by [User:Wittylama|Wittylama] in June 2014, which requested that the title of each entry in the encyclopedia to be copied and pasted without change. Kerry offered me the checklist, created by the late User:Lankiveil for the Sydney May 2014 editathon, which in turn was a global tribute to Adrianne Wadewitz. I have amended the checklist instructions but seek your further clarification on the subject of using unspaced en dashes in the face of so much history.Oronsay (talk) 21:32, 19 April 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks for your response. The instruction to copy the titles of the entries without change violates the typographic conformity guideline, which applies here because it's a title of an entry. Graham87 05:31, 20 April 2018 (UTC)
- Graham, Thanks for clearing this issue up for me. Everything makes sense to me now.Oronsay (talk) 07:56, 20 April 2018 (UTC)

Thanks for fixing my erroneous entry here form NSW to Victoria. Soon after I did it I had this flash that I'd weirdly added it to the wrong award and planned to check whether I had, and then completely forgot to do so. Very glad you captured it and fixed it. The Women's Library??
Hi, The link in you user page to The Women's Library does not seem to work.
I was chatting with a friend who was involved with the Jessie Street library .... are they connected???
Regards, Ariconte (talk) 10:58, 29 May 2018 (UTC)
- Hi, Ariconte, Thank you for pointing it out, but that is strange. It works fine for me but I've changed to link to the Wikipedia article about the Library.
- All the books and materials at The Women's Library (TWL) have been donated and are available for loan. Books are either by or about women. The Jessie Street Library has a greater focus on archives and research and is not a lending library except through inter-library loans.--Oronsay (talk) 02:19, 30 May 2018 (UTC)
- Works for me also, now. Thanks, Ariconte (talk) 02:57, 30 May 2018 (UTC)
Women in science
@Oronsay: Good to meet you today. Just had a look at your enthusiastic work on women, and Miss "don't practise what you preach" reckons you should take on Australian women in science... (I keep thinking I might start, but keep getting sidetracked by plants). Regards, MargaretRDonald (talk) 07:49, 26 May 2018 (UTC)
- Hi MargaretRDonald, Enjoyed our chat, lunch and venue - glad you suggested the daytime meetup. Thank you for your comment "enthusiastic work on women" - one to share with my Women Write Wiki group at The Women's Library, Newtown. Are there no women botanists you come across in your plant work? Why don't you find and start articles about them so I can help develop their entries? The Women in Red project I mentioned does include eight Aussie women in a list created from Wikidata - Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Missing articles by occupation/Botanists. Perhaps I may look at them and see how I go ... or perhaps I'll stick to writing about women in occupations with which I'm more familiar? Regards, Oronsay (talk) 21:09, 26 May 2018 (UTC)
- Hi Oronsay A few women spring to mind. I had no joy in sussing out anything about M. Hart, a prolific botanical artist, who I assume was a woman because of the single initial! (The men gloried in wonderful quadruple-barreled names.) She made 906 beautiful drawings for Curtis's Botanical Magazine see http://www.plantillustrations.org/artist.php?id_artist=580&mobile=0&size=0... But I see there is a good entry for Matilda Smith (with a gallery of 4663 illustrations in plantillustrations.org). Yet who has heard of Matilda Smith. Joy Garden (1923-) did early work from the National Herbarium of NSW and later, under her married name, (which does not spring to mind) worked in the herbarium in Perth (PERTH)... I wrote to the herbarium and also looked for a death notice but failed to find anything beyond her published names and therefore publications. Her botanical name abbreviation is J.Garden http://www.ipni.org/ipni/idAuthorSearch.do?id=3023-1, and remains that regardless of married names... PS. Given your capability as a researcher, I don't think you should be put off by botany not being your area of expertise.. Have fun. MargaretRDonald (talk) 00:20, 27 May 2018 (UTC)
- Hi please note my comment at Margarets talk page - the thing of women in science here in perth hasnt been explored so far (as far as I can tell) any clues ever from either of you - please let know, as there are some possible avenues for extra work and things here in Perth in the near future.. EWL Article List
Hi, Oronsay. I’ve been trying to organize the lists for the Women in Red project, and ran across User:Oronsay/EWL Article List (it’s categorized as a WiR redlist). I was going to ask if you wanted to move it into project space. However, after I looked at it, I realized it might be a bit confusing to new editors (especially), since its purpose differs from the other redlists. I wonder if you would be willing to add one step to your workflow, and add red entries to some of the crowd-sourced lists linked to on the Redlist index. You could even add them to more than one, if applicable. What do you think? NotARabbit (talk) 01:49, 6 June 2018 (UTC)
- Hi, NotARabbit. Thanks for your message. Great idea! I agree it's confusing at the moment. I'd be happy to look into adding names to existing WiR redlists. If I keep the original list where it is I will see when an article is created and can then go and tag it with the Encyclopedia link, as the original creator of the list requested. I am away from home at the moment and will look into this further next week.Oronsay (talk) 08:34, 6 June 2018 (UTC)
- Great! Thank you. NotARabbit (talk) 17:53, 6 June 2018 (UTC)
Invitation to participate in study
Hello,
I am E. Whittaker, an intern at Wikimedia with the Scoring Team to create a labeled dataset, and potentially a tool, to help editors deal with incivility when they encounter it on talk pages. A full write-up of the study can be found here: m:Research:Civil_Behavior_Interviews. We are currently recruiting editors to be interviewed about their experiences with incivility on talk pages. Would you be interested in being interviewed? I am contacting you because of your involvement in Wikipedia’s Women in Red project. The interviews should take ~1 hour, and will be conducted over BlueJeans (which does allow interviews to be recorded). If, so, please email me at ewhit@umich.edu in order to schedule an interview.

Companions of the Order of Australia
Hello. I saw you talking about Australian women at Women in Red. I was wondering if you would like to help create articles on missing women who are missing at the List of Companions of the Order of Australia. There are currently 6 women missing. If you are interested, please let me know. Thanks :) --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 18:47, 28 June 2018 (UTC)
- Hi, MrLinkinPark333. Yes, I'd like that. It's why I wrote about Janet McCalman in January this year, after she was awarded AC in 2018 Australia Day Honours. In fact, I had already gathered some info on Stella Bywaters and I'd like to write about Helen Cutler. I'll make them my priority! The only one I'm reluctant to attempt is Marilyn Ann Darling, philanthropist. I could find much on Google to base an article on.Oronsay (talk) 22:40, 28 June 2018 (UTC)
- Awesome! The six are: Helen Cutler, Nanette Waddy, Judith Whitworth, Dr. Jean Calder, Stella Bywaters, Marilyn Ann Darling. Originally, Prof Janice Reid was on my list but I see you've made the article. :). I could send you what I have for Helen Cutler if you wish? --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 23:01, 28 June 2018 (UTC)
- Hi again, MrLinkinPark333 Glad you found only six, as I went down the list twice looking for the seventh! It could be helpful to see what you have on Helen Cutler, but I've already collected info from NSW State Library, Australian Women's Register and a little from Trove. How would you propose sending the Helen Cutler info? I've blanked my sandbox in case you want to paste it there. Just don't want to fall foul of plagiarism police, but I guess sandboxes are not patrolled.Oronsay (talk) 23:34, 28 June 2018 (UTC)
- The 7th one was Janice Reid but I realized you already did it. I've sent the links in a wikimail. The links I have are a GBooks entry and two newspaper clippings from newspapers.com. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 23:40, 28 June 2018 (UTC)

- Thank you, MrLinkinPark333. I've received your wikimail with the research for Helen Cutler. It will be helpful. I must step back from Wikipedia for a bit today. I've another writing project requiring my attention. These women with their ACs will, however, be my priority in the next few weeks. Cheers! Oronsay (talk) 23:51, 28 June 2018 (UTC)
- @Oronsay: Wow! I see you've been busy and reduced the redlist to TWO entries :) I saw Helen Cutler in the #1day1woman initiative and thought I check the list. Well done! --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 20:27, 4 August 2018 (UTC)
- @MrLinkinPark333: - Thanks for your ongoing encouragement. I have a little more to add to my draft for Marilyn Darling before using a redlink, but have yet to start writing up my research for the entry for Nanette Waddy. Oronsay (talk) 23:43, 4 August 2018 (UTC)

- @MrLinkinPark333: Thanks for your offer. I now have quite a bit of info gathered and just need to write up both women. Perhaps you may have something to add when I've uploaded the articles to redlinks? Oronsay (talk) 03:00, 5 August 2018 (UTC)

Linking authors in citations
Hi again, thanks for linking authors at pages like [[Kangaroo Island][, but please use the authorlink/editor-link parameters for that in future, like I just did. Adding direct wikilinks can mess up the microformats which are used by software that processes citations. Not a big deal, but just thought I'd let you know. Graham87 16:39, 14 August 2018 (UTC)
- Graham - Thank you for showing me how to link from authors correctly. I'm always glad to learn, and am sorry that I have been adding links the wrong way to authors' surnames to date. It will not happen again. Oronsay (talk) 21:20, 14 August 2018 (UTC)
- @Graham87: Could you show me an authorlink example where the author is cited |last1=(i.e. surname)|first1=(i.e. first name)? I hope there is a proper way to do this, too. Oronsay (talk) 02:21, 15 August 2018 (UTC)
- No worries; there's a lot to learn here. There's an example of using author links with more than one author in the examples section of the "cite book" documentation under the heading "Basic usage (two authors)". Graham87 03:34, 15 August 2018 (UTC)

List of Australian of the Year Award recipients
Good evening, just letting you know why I reverted your edits to List of Australian of the Year Award recipients. The list is only to display the post-nominals of the award of the recipient at the time of the announcement, not after that date. Nford24 (PE121 Personnel Request Form) 09:41, 29 August 2018 (UTC)
- Totally understand, Nford24. Apologies for giving you extra work. Oronsay (talk) 13:55, 29 August 2018 (UTC)

September 2018
Hello, I'm Zackmann08. Thank you for your recent contributions to Edith Coleman. I noticed that when you added the image to the infobox, you added it as a thumbnail. In the future, please do not use thumbnails when adding images to an infobox (see WP:INFOBOXIMAGE). What does this mean? Well in the infobox, when you specify the image you wish to use, instead of doing it like this:
|image=[[File:SomeImage.jpg|thumb|Some image caption]]
Instead just supply the name of the image. So in this case you can simply do:
|image=SomeImage.jpg
.
There will then be a separate parameter for the image caption such as |caption=Some image caption
. Please note that this is a generic form message I am leaving on your page because you recently added a thumbnail to an infobox. The specific parameters for the image and caption may be different for the infobox you are using! Please consult the Template page for the infobox being used to see better documentation. Thanks! Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 20:09, 11 September 2018 (UTC)
- Apologies, Zackmann08. Thank you for your detailed explanation and instructions. It won't happen again. Oronsay23:44, 11 September 2018 (UTC)

Women's bio stubs
I see you are noticing the women's minimal bio stubs that I created using ADB as the primary source. As I noted in the initial edit summary, these were prepared for an International Women's Day related event that ultimately didn't take place. The intention had been that new and relatively inexperienced Wikipedians would expand the stubs (which I had created as minimally as possible in advance to avoid the problems associated with new/inexperienced people trying to create articles which bedevils those kind of events). But, as I say, the event didn't happen, so do feel free to do whatever you like with the articles. Kerry (talk) 07:18, 9 October 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks for the explanation and encouragement, Kerry. I generally just do a little here and there as I can, e.g. I've been on an image hunt recently. I'm sure your stubs will useful for next year's IWD. Oronsay (talk) 19:16, 9 October 2018 (UTC)

Wonderful to see all the pages you've created! I just searched on Miriam Dixson's name recently, and was sad to see there was no article about her - and now there is, thanks to you! RebeccaGreen (talk) 08:54, 2 November 2018 (UTC) |

Thank you
...for all your amazing work on Australian women's literature. I've been really enjoying reading both your new articles and others that I've found because you've been better organising the existing material. The Drover's Wife (talk) 01:48, 18 November 2018 (UTC)
- You are very kind, The Drover's Wife. Your enthusiasm about my efforts is responsible for a big smile on my face. Writing new articles is what I find most difficult, so I like to break it up by working on lists and literary awards. Oronsay (talk) 02:09, 18 November 2018 (UTC)
