I work in the Taiwan film industry and recently read Jake Pollock’s Chinese Wikipedia page. I felt that it hadn’t been updated recently and took it upon myself to edit the page. Afterwards, I decided to create an English entry to complement the original Chinese entry.
I voluntarily created this page, but I also understand the requirements of Wikipedia’s term of use , so I’ve updated my user page. Please let me know if there's anything else I need to do for approval. Thanks for your time and attention. Naniu9hei (talk) 02:08, 20 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Naniu9hei: Just to confirm, you are not being paid to edit the page Draft:Jake Pollock and you do not have any COI, or possible COI under the guidelines at WP:COI? ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 20:57, 3 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I confirm that I am not being paid to edit this submission. I work in the Taiwan film industry and am currently employed by Letzuco in connection with a project in development. During work for that project, I came upon Jake Pollock's Chinese wikipedia page and decided to update it. Afterwards, I volunteered to create an English page for Jake Pollock to supplement the Chinese entry. Because the Taiwan film industry is rather small, I have worked on some of the same projects. However, I do not feel that constitutes a conflict of interest. I hope this is sufficient to allay any concerns you may have. Thank you Naniu9hei (talk) 07:47, 4 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. In that case, please check the draft and review the comment I have left there. Once you fix the sourcing issue I mentioned, I'll take a look at it again. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 12:38, 4 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Just want to let you know that I've updated the submission. Regarding the lead section, I've changed the birthdate to only include the birth year, as this is easily found in a google search. The lead section mentions working with several directors who are referenced in the later film works list. I trust that means I don't need a separate reference for that sentence?
I've added significantly more references to the short film/other section, which I hope will complete the need for further information.
I can supply more references to Chinese language interviews and articles, but I want to make this accessible to as many people as possible. Please advise if there's any more that needs to be done! Thank you again for your time and attention! Naniu9hei (talk) 15:28, 7 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, @Naniu9hei. I've accepted your submission, but I've commented out the birth year for now, because I can't find a reliable source for it on google. If you have one, feel free to add it. Thanks. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 16:48, 7 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Also, did you write the article from scratch yourself, or did you translate the Chinese version of the article? ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 16:52, 7 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
As I stated before, I came upon the Chinese Wikipedia entry in conjunction with a project in development. I saw that it was rather incomplete and so updated the entry based on the information I found. At that point, I thought there would be value in creating an English version. My motivation to do so is that I want to inform a wider audience about the Taiwanese filmmaking community. The English version was written from scratch, not translated from the Chinese. Naniu9hei (talk) 04:21, 9 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Oh ok, that's fine. Thanks for creating the article! ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 14:53, 9 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I may have asked this before, in which case apologies for repetition, but as I cannot find the question and answer, I will ask again.
You uploaded two photographs of Mr Pollock, both taken at close quarters, apparently a few years apart. Both images were uploaded as your 'own work'. This implies you have some sort of an external relationship with him, to have taken these photos. Can you clarify, please? -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 15:38, 7 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@DoubleGrazing: While you're sorting this out, do you mind if I accept the draft? Outside of any possible undisclosed paid editing, which I don't think is the case here, I don't believe a possible COI is a reason to decline the draft. The only thing it might affect is a COI tag, on the article or talk page. Thanks. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 16:08, 7 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@ARandomName123: of course, if you so wish. You've the same AfC rights as I do, so don't need to ask for my permission. :) -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 16:26, 7 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, in order to clarify and allay any concerns, let me explain in greater detail. As I mentioned before, I work in Taiwanese film. It’s a relatively small community and so we often work with the same people on various projects. Sometimes I run into filmmakers in other settings, like film premieres and festivals. As such, I have taken Mr. Jake Pollock’s picture both on set and at festival events. I chose these pictures because they are closer proximity than some of the other pictures I have. Additionally, the pictures don’t feature other people, so I thought they would be more appropriate for Wikipedia.
I have taken similar photos of many other Taiwanese filmmakers. Sometimes, the filmmakers themselves will ask for copies of the photos. The first picture I sent (which was later rejected) was one such photo. It appears that Mr. Pollock used the same portrait photo on his IMDB entry. Since I am still a novice when it comes to Wikipedia entries, I didn’t realize that the same photo would violate the rules of submission. I apologize for the confusion that this mistake caused and hope that this can clarify the situation. Thanks Naniu9hei (talk) 04:24, 9 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
