Some delectable tea for you!

Sometimes, we all need a nice cup of tea. Here you go! :) Writ Keeper 22:23, 26 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thankyou so much , kind Writ Keeper! Myrtle.

Don't give up on your good work Myrtle, and you can always come to us (Teahouse!) for support. heather walls (talk) 02:07, 27 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Heather, good to know all the nice folk at Teahouse are there. :-) Myrtle.

Hello Myrtle. You made a worthwhile effort to copyedit at Alessandra Kersevan and tried to remove some POV language. You mentioned your difficulties with this article in a note at the Teahouse. After examining the other editor's revert, I posted a warning to him. If you are inclined to do further work on this article, you should feel free to call on admins if you see any more attempts to restore language which is not neutral or is badly sourced. Thank you, EdJohnston (talk) 04:52, 27 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ed, Thanks for your note. Much appreciated. I'm going to leave it a little while and then go back to the page after I chat with the other editor and have a read around the topic. Regards, Myrtle.

Dropping by...

[edit]

Hi, I'm just dropping by to say Hi. I noticed you at the Teahouse, and then saw that you're also on the Guild of Copy Editors list of new members. I just joined myself. The May drive sounds like fun, but my DIL and grandson will be in town for three weeks, so I bet I'm not on the computer quite as much then. I haven't seen them since Christmas.

When I saw your name I immediately thought of Remington Steele -- are you a fan, or did the name come from someplace else? Happy editing. Tlqk56 (talk) 22:37, 27 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Marita Solberg - thanks

[edit]

Hello Myrtlegroggins. You did a really nice job on Marita Solberg, and in future I'm going to follow your example of how to deal with musician articles that go into excessive detail about individual performances. I hope you won't mind, but I've changed the template you placed on its talk page from {{GOCEreviewed}}, which means that we've looked at the article and don't think it ready for copy editing, to {{GOCE}}, which means that we've done the needed copy edit. You have, so that's the right template. It doesn't need a signature, as the editor's username goes inside the template itself.

Thanks again. --Stfg (talk) 09:30, 7 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Stfg! Nice to meet you. Thank you very much for explaining about the difference in the templates. I think I've been adding the wrong one all over the place. Deary me! I'll go back and change them over. I'm glad you liked the edit.

Cheers, Myrtlegroggins (talk) 03:47, 8 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Village pump post

[edit]

Looks like you accidentally deleted your post after making it. I fixed the article issue you brought though. You had bullet points (asterisks *) before each nav box (what you refer to as category boxes). They're meant to be placed without those, that's why they looked all screwy. Equazcion (talk) 07:32, 17 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks Equazcion. I appreciate your help very much. I learn something wiki-ish every day. Sincerely, Myrtle.Myrtlegroggins (talk) 07:37, 17 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Okey. Got it. Sorry for the mistake. Will go and correct. Thanks Niemti, Myrtle. Myrtlegroggins (talk) 06:50, 24 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Also there was no "historical" Merlin (probably), there is no reason for sentences to be that short, on Wikipedia words such as "didn't" should be "did not" unless they're being quoted, and so on. Copy edit after a copy edit. Also, it's "okay"... --Niemti (talk) 07:19, 24 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Updated Benboulaïd

[edit]

Thank you for copy-editing article "Mustapha Benboulaïd" for the other details. The early deaths of those guys had shocked me, so I lost track. I re-added the wp:autosizing of images, and italicized the French phrases. His young death shocked me, but I when I saw your edit as "(age 95)" then I was relieved to think that, perhaps, he had lived a long life instead, but the template parameters were mixed, and I corrected the {Death date and age}, which really noted "(age 39)". Those events are very sad, as I also read about his friend, "Krim Belkacem". -Wikid77 (talk) 16:40, 3 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It is incredibly sad - and never seems to stop. Why is life held in such cheap regard? All I can think is that the answer lies with education of the next generation - not with just facts but with training in logic, philosophy and so on. Maybe education is where WP can help. I hope so.
Thanks for your help with the article. i'm going back to learn how you made the changes so I can improve.
i hope today is a happy editing day for you. Warm regards, MyrtleMyrtlegroggins (talk) 22:01, 3 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I think it's time

[edit]

Time to finally fix up all the ninjutsu articles. Tomorrow i'm going to start with Hatsumi, then go on to Takamatsu and then Toda. Then either Bujinkan or Modern School of Ninjutsu. After that, i'll have to see. But it's finally time to fix up all these articles, make them look good and, most important of all, make them neutral and without either the positive pontification or the negative histrionics. SilverserenC 03:03, 3 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Silverseren, Thanks for your note. I agree with you entirely. The two opinions, positive and negative can still be presented in as much detail as anyone would like but they need to be identified as opinions and supported with evidence. WP is only as helpful to people in the future as its current standards. Please let me know if you would like me to do anything to help - I'd be more than happy to contribute. I'll back you up 100%, Myrtle.

Have a Bit of FUN

[edit]

Howdy, Myrtle. It's great to see you jump right in and improve some Wikipedia articles. When you need a break, have a bit of Wikifun; check out Pluma's Fun stuff to pretty up your user page. Some are important, too. For example, if you are read and write in other languages, adding the appropriate Babel userbox automatically adds you to a list of editors with language skills. Most Userboxes are just for fun, to tell visitors a bit about yourself quickly. Hope you enjoy and take care, DocTree (talk) 17:10, 6 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Myrtle. It's great that the page is the best possible readable in English. But, as I'm a most editor of the page, I would like to stay in the same format. At the same time, because I'm a Brazilian Carioca and a Portuguese speaker and don't have much knowledge of English (I mean the very basic), a help in a translation is a great, ok? BalbinoFelipe (talk) 03:40, 05 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Balbino. Keeping the format as you would like is no problem. Let me know if you would like any assistance with translation. Regards, Myrtle.

Please stick with it

[edit]

Hello Myrtle,

I could see, from your comments at the Teahouse, that you are feeling a bit frustrated. My guess is that the other editor was acting in good faith, but was acting too quickly, without examining your contributions carefully enough. I hate to see new women editors discouraged by an occasional negative response. In my opinion, you are exactly the kind of editor we need most, someone willing to take on an article on a fringe topic, and work to make it more neutral. This work can be tough, but it can be very rewarding. You will need a thick skin and a good understanding of our policies and guidelines. But if you stick with it, you can make exceptionally valuable contributions here. We need you. Feel free to ask me questions at any time. Thanks. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 05:44, 19 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thankyou Cullen. I was thinking the quick revert was because the editing was all wrong and the other editor was very angry with me. But from what you say perhaps that is not it at all. I got into the same bind with a page about Nijitsu a while back. I love copy editing and I believe in Wikipedia so thankyou for the support. I will definitely accept any constructive criticism with gratitude. Myrtle (all calm now) Myrtlegroggins (talk) 07:36, 19 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, we meet again :-); I began copyediting this article because it had a {{copyedit}} tag. As I suggested before on my talk page, would you please remove the tag (or use {{GOCEinuse}}—your choice, just so I know someone's already working on it without having to check the edit history) before you start a copyedit? You can have this one this time, and I'll do another. Thanks and all the best, Miniapolis 00:49, 24 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

oh, hello again. Ok, sure. I always check the edit history and talk page before I start and I assumed others would too but it's easy to remove the tag as well. Happy editing! :-) Myrtle Myrtlegroggins (talk) 03:52, 24 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Oral rehydration therapy

[edit]

Thank for your work regarding Oral rehydration therapy. If you have time, there's an issue where some publications recommend 1 teaspoon salt and 6 teaspoons sugar per liter water whereas others recommend only 1/2 teaspoon salt (along with 6 teaspoons sugar). I think we should probably include sources recommending both. Please take a look at this if you have the time and interest. Thanks. Cool Nerd (talk) 01:31, 24 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Cool Nerd. Thanks for your message. I am interested to work this out and have an explanation. One thing that occurs to me is to look to see whether the small change in salt has any clinical impact. I'll look into it for sure. Cheers, Myrtle.Myrtlegroggins (talk) 07:55, 24 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, I've made some changes trying to hit the high points sooner. Please feel free to change them back or experiment. I view it very much as a work in progress.
With the differing ORS recipes, I think there's a difference. I mean, it's twice as much salt. But even more than that, I don't want us to put ourselves in a position of making clinical judgments. All we can do is pull from WHO, CDC, and other well-regarded publications and summarize in straightforward fashion, at least as it seems to me. And I am not a doctor, I want to be clear about that. Cool Nerd (talk) 20:35, 24 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Cool Nerd, hi again, If you have a moment, could you have a look and see that I have kept all the points you wanted to include? Regards, Myrtle. Myrtlegroggins (talk) 08:25, 25 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Okay, you've asked if it's kept all the points? No, I'm sorry. I'd rather not use the valuable real estate of the opening paragraph on the history. I'd rather discuss what ORT is right now, including that it's more than just the solution itself.

Now, this said, I am in favor of experimentation and continued research. So, yes, I'm in favor of trying things. And it is remarkable that ORT is (widely?) regarded as one of the most relevant health advances (the last thirty years?). But I still do want the right now. Unfortunately, it will probably be the middle of the week before I can put a good chunk of time in it. Cool Nerd (talk) 22:31, 25 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Cool Nerd, I appreciate and I admire how invested you are in this article. I feel that you see it in your mind's eye in a very particular way. However, I'm honestly not seeing a great deal of willingness to compromise on your part at the moment, especially when it comes to adopting an encyclopaedic structure for the article, so I'll wish you happy editing and move on. My only other suggestions would be firstly, to try to avoid too many direct quotes and a "how to" tone in the article and also try to avoid overly long sentences for the sake of readability. Kind regards, Myrtle. Myrtlegroggins (talk) 03:08, 26 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Myrtle, you said you were going to graciously bow out. Actually, I'd rather you be in there helping. I think there are some real issues that well warrant some additional research. Cool Nerd (talk) 22:31, 31 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hi there. When I did the copy edit, I read the available scientific literature and it seemed to me that the main concepts were covered in the article. Perhaps you can explain again what you feel are the unresolved issues? Myrtle Myrtlegroggins (talk) 10:35, 1 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, the differing recipes, whether the fluid itself and starting early is by far the most important part, because some contexts really emphasize the zinc (and maybe the continued eating as well), the JAMA editorial that the original compromise has been pushed to the breaking point. Specially, that the reduced-osmolarity solution, whereas it's okay and certainly better than nothing, is not the best formula for adults with cholera. This editorial is now almost ten years old. I would hope that there's been some work and some investigation since then, but maybe not. Again, I am not a doctor. I am just very interested in these issues. Cool Nerd (talk) 18:26, 3 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I understand your concerns. Perhaps I can help by giving some practical background experience and expertise. With respect to differing recipes: there could be several explanations - for instance, the advice given to the SA soccer folk might have been directed towards unwell adult sports tourists whereas, the WHO is more concerned with feeble sick children in refugee camps - so, differing recipes for differing potential patient groups; or, there are errors or elements of misinformation about - this is possible, not everyone is lovely and precise as you or I :-). If we take the case of parents making up an ORT fluid, they will use what they have available at the time to save their child's life, even boiled rice water.
The differences in the recipes that you have noted are not likely to have any major clinical impact. Yes, the amount of sugar may be double that of in another, but, when mixing a half or one teaspoon of sugar in 1000 ml water, the difference in the overall concentration (as a *portion* of the much greater amount of water) is is minimal. If it were a half or one teaspoon of sugar in 10 or 100 ml water, it would be a very different case. In a real world sense, these differences are able to be tolerated. I think I did point out in my copy edit the existence of different recipes.
With respect to the fluid versus the adjuncts (eating and zinc), I can, without any doubt, say that however a previous document is written or seems to say, the fluid is definitely the most important element in preventing deaths from cholera. If a baby or child is dehydrated from the fluid lost in the diarrhoea, no amount of feeding or zinc supplementation will make any difference to whether the child lives or dies. There is good physiological reasoning behind this and no one would ever do a head to head trial of food and or zinc versus ORT fluid because to do so would be a criminal act. I can't say strongly enough that the article must *not* suggest in any way or form that the ORT fluid is not the most important element.
If I understand correctly, the 'reduced osmolality' data was used specifically to provide manufacturing guidelines for the pre-prepared powders. True, in the future, the manufacturing guidelines may take account of differing patient groups as you suggest and be revised again. However, Wiki can only say what is true of today, that's the nature of an encyclopaedia. It can't speculate what might be determined to be right or wrong in the future.
To move forward, I think we need to first carefully look at this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:MOSINTRO#Introductory_text and work on the lead of the article, probably combining both our concepts of what it should be.Myrtlegroggins (talk) 21:37, 3 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, the part with the differing recipes refers to salt. Some recommend one teaspoon (and not only the pamphlet for the World Cup), and some recommend one-half. Looking at it one way, it's double the amount. Looking at it from the other direction, it's a reduction of 50%. I'm not at all ready to say this doesn't matter.

I personally agree with you that starting the fluid early and often is the single most important thing, but . . we've got to go with the references. And diving into the references with a specific question, even a very good specific question, that is often harder than one might think.

I really like the approach with writing, assume my reader is slightly smarter than I am. They just don't happen to know this particular information. So, I don't need to talk down to them or overexplain in any manner. I can just present the information in a very straightforward manner. So, even a parent with little formal information, with what affects their child, the parent is likely to be very smart indeed. And this parent is likely to have a healthy interplay between officialdom information and facts on the ground so to speak, perhaps a healthier interplay than I have. Again, they're slightly smarter, I try to approach it that way.

I think an introduction becomes a no man's land that few people read. Whereas with the lead, as long it's well-written without too much repetitive information, people will keep reading it. Cool Nerd (talk) 19:35, 4 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, good luck with it. I'll put our discussion on the talk page of the article so everyone can see where you are up to with the collaboration side of things. Myrtle. Myrtlegroggins (talk) 21:23, 4 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Jeez, that will need a copy-edit after your copy-edit

[edit]

Never start any sentences from "Also". ("Also, support from the United States was expected but did not eventuate.")

Don't post any single-sentence paragraphs.

Don't write awkward sentences such as "In southern Iraq, Iraqi Army troops (Shia conscripts) and anti-regime groups such as the Islamic Dawa Party and the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SCIRI) rebelled."

"The uprisings were precipitated by the perception that the rule of the Iraqi president, Saddam Hussein, was weak." -???? What? It was hisvpower being weakened, not his rule weak (it was anything but weak, he was a 'strongman', for many years killing off any oposition.)

Don't post change things into factually incorrect and misleading "The uprisings gained momentum when these events were reported in the news and Bush made his radio broadcast.[13]" - receiving news is not the same as "reported in the news", and by now you should know that the radio broadcasts came first.

And so on. Like it should be always "Saddam", not just "Hussein"; Hussein was in Jordan. Don't change the titlesn in the references. It's BBC News, not "BBC news". And so many other things that were correct but you turn into errors. --Niemti (talk) 13:32, 13 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

You turned the infobox into total chaos, too. Please start again all over. --Niemti (talk) 13:37, 13 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Niemti, hello. Your comments are harsh but valid and I appreciate your feedback very much. I'm working hard to improve and I have learnt the lesson that I should not "save" until everything is completely correct because a 'work in progress' disturbs people such as yourself. I will "start over" as you say, reverting to before I made any changes. Just to satisfy my own curiosity, are you American? The section title and your tone suggest you are. Kind regards and thank you once again, Myrtle G. Myrtlegroggins (talk) 22:35, 13 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Niemti, hello again. Now I am confused. I went to look at the article's revision history and I noticed you were doing work on the article at the end of January but you had not removed the copy edit request tag. How is that? I see you have reverted back to how you like the article and as I have no interest in the topic, I'll leave you to it. Once again, yours etc. Myrtle G. Myrtlegroggins (talk) 22:44, 13 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Had a read of Niemti's talk page this morning - I feel poor Niemti has a lot of confrontation and little wiki-love. Does the GOCE Tea House make a decent espresso coffee? And, by the way, how do I order a "flat white" in America? Have a good day, everyone, Myrtle. Myrtlegroggins (talk) 22:07, 14 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Avalongod, thank you very much for your kind words. I appreciate your encouragement. Happy editing and best to you, Myrtle. Myrtlegroggins (talk) 05:15, 9 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Myrtle! I just wanted to touch bases on the above linked article. Firstly, thanks for working on the article. When removing maintenance templates, please be sure to either resolve the problem that the template refers to, or give a valid reason for the removal in the edit summary. If you have questions or don't understand the identified issue, please contact the editor who recognized the concern and placed the templates. More than happy to help or answer questions anytime. Best regards, Cindy(talk) 02:49, 26 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Cindy, Thankyou for your note, very much. I didn't get back to finish resolving the problems as quickly as I would have liked to, so mea culpa++. Just so I am sure (and please note I know nothing about the topic of the article - I found this article on the copyedit needed list at GOCE), the templates say:

1. "The topic of this article may not meet Wikipedia's notability guidelines for companies and organizations. (March 2014)."
I think it probably does but I can fix this with better references?
You can find the notability guidelines for organizations at WP:ORG, while the general notability guidelines can be found at WP:GNG
2. "This article may rely excessively on sources too closely associated with the subject, preventing the article from being verifiable and neutral. (March 2014)"
This too should be fixed with better references?
Yes, we need significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject. At this point, all we have is an indication that the subject exists.
3. "This article may require cleanup to meet Wikipedia's quality standards. The specific problem is: image formatting, captions, italics, embedded links; see WP:MOS. (March 2014)"
I don't understand the concern with the image formatting or captions? I'm about half way through fixing the article's embedded links and I'll check the MOS for italics again.
Essentially, the image layout, size, and captions did not meet the guidelines.
4. "The lead section of this article may need to be rewritten. (March 2014)" and "This article's lead section may not adequately summarize key points of its contents. (March 2014)".
Not sure about these. Too short? I agree it is concise. That would be easier to fix when the rest of the article is corrected. I usually do that last.
The lead section needs to summarize the article content, while specifically stating why or how the subject is significant or important.
5. "This article may have too many links to other articles, and could require cleanup to meet Wikipedia's quality standards. (March 2014)."
I agree there are a lot of links but I was making them for someone like me who has no knowledge of agricultural science. I agree more cleanup needs to be done and I was going to get back to it as soon as I could.
I've removed the redundant and insignificant wikilinks.

If it is ok, I would like to keep working on the article. (I am GMT+10 so not likely to be awake if someone in the US of UK wishes to discuss, so not being rude in not replying immediately.) Kind regards, Myrtle G. Myrtlegroggins (talk) 04:31, 26 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oh, girl, I don't take your reply or lack as rude at all! We all have real lives. And we all need to sleep. I went ahead and did a major cleanup on this article, before I saw your note here. I've gone back and forth with the article creator to no end. I tried to give some feedback, but it was either misunderstood or disregarded. I had some time today, so I jumped in to help. I figure some people learn by seeing examples and whatnot. If you have questions, please feel free to drop me a line. One of the primary things to remember is not to remove the maintenance templates until after the issues are addressed. In essence, the templates place the article in a queue, much like you found at GOCE. When the templates were removed, this removed the article from the specific queues. We have a lot of bad articles slip through the cracks. Who needs another? Anyway, hope you are doing well. Best regards, Cindy(talk) 08:30, 26 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Cindy, Thank you so much for your help. I'm taking your notes carefully on board for the future and I saw the great changes you made on the ARO page. I definitely won't remove the tags first (even if I intend to address all the issues) I can see now how that is a problem. I hope you have a lovely day and many hours of happy editing, Myrtle G. Agricultural Research Organization - Volcani Center

[edit]

Hi Myrtlegroggins! I see you have also been working on the Volcani page - thanks for the help! Not sure why cindamuse thought I was dis-respecting her - I removed content and replaced it according to her comments and issues, but she was right, I guess I did need to see an example. In any event, I did A LOT of work on the page today. I added about a billion references (OK, 30, but who's counting), the vast majority to outside sources - books, journal articles, newspaper articles, websites. I also tried to format the references correctly, but if you have a chance to check my work, that will be great, as I am still learning this stuff. It seems to me now that no one could question either Volcani's notability or the quality of the citations, so I removed these issue notes. Please, let me know what you think, e1baa340@opayq.com (talk) 15:44, 1 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Ergraber, I think as first step, we should put all the discussions about the article on the talk page. I'm going to do that now (and I should have done it before). Then we can move forwards to make it a really great article. Regards, Myrtle G. Myrtlegroggins (talk) 21:48, 1 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Agricultural Research Organization - Volcani Center

[edit]

Hi Myrtlegroggins - I moved some other talk between Cindamuse and me into the Agri talk page. If you have no objections, I will leave you to deal with the new issues that have come up for now; you have a lot more experience than me. I can understand if the formatting still wasn't good, but I can't understand why these issues are still featuring:

The vast majority of the references (>75%) are now third-party sources, and they can all be verified by clicking on the links and reading them. They were not invented for the occasion. Do you know what is not satisfactory? Thanks, e1baa340@opayq.com (talk) 14:10, 2 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Ergraberle, Sure, no problem. I had a look this evening at the article again and tweeked a few things. I'll have a look at the sources too when I have a moment. Regards, Myrtle G. Myrtlegroggins (talk) 15:59, 2 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Video Game Controversies

[edit]

I wonder if you might be willing to take a look back at the Video Game Controversies article again. I've been kind of both working and fighting, haha, with DavidA about changes to the page. We both have some strong opinions I think and see things different, and even read some articles differently. Anyway, I know you did a lot of work on the page recently and I thought it looked pretty good when you had gotten through with it. So I'd appreciate your having a look at it and the various edits. I think I'll take a step back from it as I don't think going back and forth endlessly with DavidA will help the page much. It probably needs some fresh eyes though. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.100.165.246 (talk) 14:30, 10 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. Certainly, I'd be glad to have a look and see if there are any suggestions I can make. I'm glad my copy edit has led to people such as yourself being able to carry the page forward. Please know I have no special interest in video games - I can't even play them with out falling over with vertigo! Regards, Myrtle Myrtlegroggins (talk) 10:31, 11 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Since you seem much better at summarising than I am, could you please take a look at the "Public Debate" section. It seems unnecessarily long and clumsy. Thanks. David A (talk) 17:45, 13 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

For sure, but it might take me a little while because I am flat out work wise at the moment. Regards, Myrtle Myrtlegroggins (talk) 06:39, 14 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Sorry about being a bother. David A (talk) 10:37, 14 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Honestly, no bother :-) Myrtle Myrtlegroggins (talk) 11:28, 14 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry about being a bother, but the legal case mentioned here, which I just added a comment to, is also mentioned more extensively here. But it all seems out of place crammed into the fMRI science section. Would it be acceptable if I moved all of it to the mention in the government legislation section? David A (talk) 17:02, 19 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I made a preliminary edit here. Please check if this is acceptable, and othervise you can change it back. Thanks. David A (talk) 17:17, 19 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I undid one of your edit on demographics section at Adoni, census was not recorded at adoni, also urban agglomeration info was also restored, I don't know why you corrected cited reference. The section was proper, it may require minor edit but not major, any issue Ping me.--Vin09 (talk) 09:12, 14 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I was looking for consistency in the citation style and as it read it wasn't clear in which defined district the count was made - was it just the town or a district of the same name? What does the "urban agglomeration" refer to? It has to be clear to someone reading about Adoni who has never been there or does not know about specific Indian terms. Can you help? I do hope so. Regards, Myrtle.Myrtlegroggins (talk) 09:18, 14 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

You can link it to urban agglomeration page, see all other pages you can understand.--Vin09 (talk) 09:43, 14 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
That's good - I will do that. I copy edited the section again with what you said in mind. Would you like to have a look and see if everything is ok? Myrtle. 09:47, 14 September 2015 (UTC)

Hellmuth Kolbe

[edit]

Hi Myrtlegroggins Please explain why you changed the Hellmuth Kolbe article. Regards, Marcel — Preceding unsigned comment added by Schneidex (talkcontribs) 10:10, 20 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Marcel,

Certainly. There were a few different reasons: the article came up on a list of articles needing copyediting and so I was working to be able to remove that tag; secondly, the layout and the tone needed to be more encyclopaedic (for example, there was too much information in the image captions); and thirdly, one could argue as to how much detail on the subject is appropriate but I hope the article is in a good basic shape for future improvements. I think there were some parts that were lacking appropriate citations. Was there something in particular which concerned you? Please let me know so we can continue to improve the article, Myrtle.Myrtlegroggins (talk) 11:03, 20 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Myrtlegroggins One can argue about every article. This is no excuse. My version was based on interviews with many people and was supported by them, especially by Mrs. Kolbe and the Kolbe family, and other experts in audio recording and technology. It is now a castrated article where many important items are missing. Everything was carefully cited, btw. It seems to me (and others) your interest is more in formally nice looking articles than in those containing valuable information. In this case we all prefer no article at all over just nice looking ones. Marcel — Preceding unsigned comment added by Schneidex (talkcontribs) 17:59, 20 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Marcel, I am going to move our discussion to the Hellmuth Kolbe article talk page so it will be archived in the correct space.Myrtlegroggins (talk) 07:45, 21 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Myrtlegroggins, All of the persons who knew Hellmuth Kolbe and even have worked with him are appalled about your non-constructive, incompetent and fraudulent intrusion in this Bio about him. I am speaking in the name of Mrs. Ursula Kolbe, her two sons and their families, of Hans Leonhard (a longtime partner of Kolbe), of Paul Zwicky who knew him well, of Walter Stutz who worked with him, of August P. Villiger, ex-director of CBS records Switzerland, and of Markus Erne and his colleagues from the Audio Engineering Society – in particular Jim Brown – who wrote the Eulogy in JAES 2002. All of them would never interfere without consultation with the people concerned and rewrite articles written by others and rewrite them according to their pleasure and obviously with the intention of showing how profound they are in corrupting the work of others. This is plagiarism in its purest form and clearly shows the character of such a person. We can only repeat: We do not approve such behavior and would rather have no article in Wikipedia about Hellmuth Kolbe then such an unfriendly rewrite. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Schneidex (talkcontribs) 08:17, 24 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Marcel, I have archived your comments at the Hellmuth Kolbe talk page and replied there. MyrtleMyrtlegroggins (talk) 11:53, 24 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

GOCE invitation

[edit]

Hi, Myrtle. We share an interest in copyediting and I don't seen any GOCE stuff on your talk page, so I'm inviting you to check out the Guild of Copy Editors. It's a good, drama-free group; we have bimonthly backlog-reduction drives and one-week blitzes, and can always use help with the requests list. Stop by and join our mailing list if you're interested. Have fun and all the best, Miniapolis 22:46, 27 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mineapolis, Thankyou for the kind invite and for saying hello. I did join GOCE a while back but I will gladly sign up for the newsletter. That will be good. I use a very random system of selecting an article to ce from the list at GOCE. And the very best to you, Myrtle :-) Myrtlegroggins (talk) 07:17, 28 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

It'll be good to have you around, Myrtle. Everyone works differently; I prefer the structure of a backlog to plug away at, and the drives and blitzes keep boredom at bay. All the best, Miniapolis 14:20, 28 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
and you, Min, Myrtle. Myrtlegroggins (talk) 08:36, 29 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again, Myrtle. I noticed in the history of Gawai Dayak that you're doing a major copyedit, which is great. Would you please remove the {{Copy edit}} tag from the lead? That would take it off the backlog (which is very large), so editors can work on other articles. Thanks and all the best, Miniapolis 20:50, 8 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Miniapolis. Certainly, no problem at all. I thought I had to wait till I had finished to do that but I will do it now for sure. It is a very long winded article! (Also, I put my name on the mailing list). Thanks for the heads up, regards and have a great weekend, Myrtle. Myrtlegroggins (talk) 04:52, 9 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yes—I was going to do that article (trimming a lot of fat :-)) but I checked the history, saw you were working on it and picked another article. I remove the tag when I start a copyedit (noting that in the edit summary) after checking the history to see if someone else is already copyediting it; it helps prevent two copyeditors working at cross-purposes. Have fun and all the best, Miniapolis 13:40, 9 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to copy edit two articles in the field of public health and sanitation

[edit]

Nice to meet you the other day! If you have a spare moment, I would love to see you do some copy editing of two articles that I have been involved with and which sit at the border of public health and sanitation. There is this one: helminthiasis and this one: mass deworming. Just in case you have some spare time and and interest in sanitation-related topics. ;-) Here is also a link to our WikiProject Sanitation that is closely linked to many health topics: Wikipedia:WikiProject_Sanitation. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Have you had much trouble with reversion of your edits?

[edit]

I have been on WP for some time now. I am a heavy-handed and bold editor with a strong sense of when things are poorly expressed and cannot resist the temptation to straighten the convoluted writing I find on WP in abundance. Unfortunately, I have trouble, from time to time, with people who seem to be squatting upon articles that refuse to allow my edits. Have you had such trouble? Personally, I am very open to others edits and welcome them. I am most definitely not a territorial type of person. But I detest rule quoting and have never resorted to calling in the "authorities" to assist in a dispute. Perhaps it is time I learn to work the levers of WP. What to do? Zedshort (talk) 21:42, 23 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Zedshort,

Nice to hear from you. :-) Yes, occasionally (as you can see reading above) I do hit a snag in my copyediting. There are different reasons for people to get angry. Sometimes it is because I have inadvertently made an honest mistake and the other person doesn't understand that.

Sometimes it is because the other editor is really involved with the article. They feel like they have done a great job and anything else is no good. If after a conversation, I don't achieve any collaboration, I wish them well, leave a tag and move on to something else (WP is a really big place).

Sometimes, people don't understand what encyclopaedic tone is and they feel I am being heartless and harsh in the copy edit. If the article is clearly promotional, or just plain wrong, I look for help with other editors with an interest in the subject, like a project page, or I go to the Teahouse for advice - the hosts are really helpful.

Looking at myself, no one in the world can "make" me angry or frustrated because those are "my" emotions. Just staying really chilled is good and taking plenty of time over a conversation helps. It sounds funny but there is something good in every situation.

With respect to the editing, I try to think what was the person who wrote the convoluted sentence really trying to convey. They took the time to write it down so it must mean something. I try to preserve the essence of what they wanted to record and that seems to go ok.

And, even when I do all that It sometimes still goes all wrong! If I can ever lend a hand, let me know.

Best, Myrtle. Myrtlegroggins (talk) 04:13, 24 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Nonito Donaire

[edit]

Greetings. Per your copyedits to the lead (of which the article was sorely in need), it now reads with three consecutive instances of "He is" to begin a sentence. I don't have degree-level knowledge of English, but it looks a bit clunky to me. Mac Dreamstate (talk) 14:22, 26 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mac Dreamstate, Thank you and absolutely correct! I usually try to get a handle on the subject when copyediting (get the sentences down to 'tin tacks') and then go back to make the syntax flow well. It takes a little time to do but I'll pop off there right now and fix the lead. I'm afraid you might find the rest, as far as I have gone, clunky too but I promise I'm still working on it. Hope that is ok. Have a great day and thanks once again, Kind regards, Myrtle, Myrtlegroggins (talk) 20:28, 26 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Much better and flows well now. Keep up the good work—anything will be an improvement on how the article looked before! Just a note on weight classes: there is an ongoing RfC at WikiProject Boxing which seems to have settled somewhat on maintaining lower case for weight classes. Therefore if you see any instances of them, along with the words "champion[ship]" and "title", being capitalised—e.g. "Super Bantamweight", "Super Flyweight"—please correct them too. It's becoming a real irritation across a plethora of boxing articles. Mac Dreamstate (talk) 20:45, 26 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Mac Dreamstate. I'll keep working on it. Please let me know if you see anything that is not correct. I'll remember to keep the classes with lower case. Cheers, Myrtle. Myrtlegroggins (talk) 06:24, 27 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Mac, could you help me understand this: "The bout headlined the card titled "Pinoy Power 3." "? Myrtle Myrtlegroggins (talk) 07:46, 27 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, "Pinoy Power 3" was a series of fight cards featuring Filipino fighters as headliners. "Pinoy" being a masculine term of endearment for a fellow Filipino (I think). Mac Dreamstate (talk) 18:19, 27 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Ah,.. many thanks for that. Myrtle. Myrtlegroggins (talk) 20:39, 27 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Question about D&D copy edit

[edit]

I'm curious why you chose to italicize the proper names in the D&D module article Dragons of Triumph, in this copy edit. I usually take out italics of this kind. See WP:NAMES and MOS:ITALICS for guidance, and let me know if you have any questions.

Your use of italics and the addition of typos such as "It is was published" may have been the cause for a complete reversion by the IP editor instead of an edit that built upon your work. Whenever an edit of mine is treated this roughly and I notice, I try to go back to the article and figure out why. If I can't figure it out, I will sometimes inquire at the editor's talk page. That particular IP address has been used consistently to edit many game-related articles, so you might get a response. – Jonesey95 (talk) 05:39, 29 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jonesey95, of course you are right. I guess I need a break - this afternoon I am a bit headachy and tired. You give very good advice. I will go back and fix it and try hard to collaborate. I admit I was getting a little confused with the proper names because they are not "of our world" like Myrtle or Canada. They are something of the fictional work then wrought into a sort of tool in a game that the players use. Trust me to make it too complex! :-) Sorry to have caused a problem. Thanks again so much, Myrtle. Myrtlegroggins (talk) 07:43, 29 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I'll leave you to it and happy copyediting. :-) Kind regards, Myrtle. Myrtlegroggins (talk) 21:51, 29 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Your changes look fine. I'm sorry for the confusion. I have assumed that the "C/E" tag should not be removed until the edit is finished. I check the history page to see if anybody is actively editing the article and then proceed. Since the drive page registrants' articles are not displayed it would be a real job going through everyone's list to see who is doing what. From now on I'll follow your lead and put a note in the article's history that a C/E is underway. Again, my apologies for the mix-up. RegardsTwofingered Typist (talk) 22:00, 29 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
It is a bit of a problem sometimes isn't it? We need a temporary copy edit drive tag to add as soon as we pick one up :-) Cheers and have a good day, Myrtle. Myrtlegroggins (talk) 22:05, 29 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page stalker) I usually remove the copy edit tag and save the article first, before starting my copy edits. That prevents this particular problem. The only risk is that I'll get pulled away before I can complete the edit, but I manage to find a way to mitigate that. Thanks to both of you for your copious copy-edits! – Jonesey95 (talk) 23:28, 29 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Heya Jonsey! Good morning! That is what I do too. I am hoping November will end soon because I think I have just about done my head in! ;-) I think next time I need to pace myself! Happy days, Myrtle. Myrtlegroggins (talk) 23:31, 29 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your copy editing work on helminthiasis

[edit]

Thanks for your recent copy editing work on the helminthiasis article - much appreciated!! I've done a bit more work, trying to set up the table of contents so that it follows the standard template that was proposed by the WikiProject Medicine WP:MED. For this reason, I moved some of the headings down a level although in two cases I wasn't really sure where the best location would be (the section on helminth types causing infection and the section about neglected tropical diseases). Perhaps you could take another look, thanks. EvMsmile (talk) 03:53, 18 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Please critique my proposal

[edit]

You will find on my Talk Page a proposed change to Wikipedia that will enhance the education function of Wikipedia greatly, and I think improve Wikipedia overall, by making it more dynamic and by attracting a different crew of people. Sorry to say this, but I believe that the crew of people here on Wikipedia have become increasingly coarse. By attracting educators I hope to make this a kinder, gentler place. Guild of Copy Editors June 2016 News

Hello everyone, welcome to the June 2016 GOCE newsletter. It's been a few months since we sent one out; we hope y'all haven't forgotten about the Guild! Your coordinators have been busy behind the scenes as usual, though real life has a habit of reducing our personal wiki-time. The May backlog reduction drive, the usual coordinating tasks and preparations for the June election are keeping us on our toes!

May drive: Thanks to everyone who participated in last month's record-setting backlog reduction drive. Of the 29 people who signed up, 16 copyedited at least one article, 197 copyedits were recorded on the drive page, and the copyedit backlog fell below 1,500 for the first time! Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

June Blitz: this one-week copy-editing blitz will occur from 12 June through 18 June; the themes will be video games and Asian geography.

Coordinator elections: It's election time again; how quickly they seem to roll around! Nominations for the next tranche of Guild coordinators, who will serve a six-month term that begins at 00:01 UTC on 1 July and ends at 23:59 UTC on 31 December, opens at 00:01 UTC on 1 June and closes at 23:59 UTC on 15 June. Voting takes place between 00:01 UTC on 16 June and 23:59 UTC on 30 June. If you'd like to assist behind the scenes, please consider stepping forward; self-nominations are welcomed and encouraged. All Wikipedia editors in good standing are eligible; remember it's your Guild, and it doesn't run itself!

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Jonesey95, Miniapolis and Baffle gab1978.

Guild of Copy Editors September 2016 News

Hello everyone, and welcome to the September 2016 GOCE newsletter.

>>> Sign up for the September Drive, already in progress! <<<

July Drive: The July drive was a roaring success. We set out to remove April, May, and June 2015 from our backlog (our 149 oldest articles), and by 23 July, we were done with those months. We added July 2015 (66 articles) and copy-edited 37 of those. We also handled all of the remaining Requests from June 2016. Well done! Overall, we recorded copy edits to 240 articles by 20 editors, reducing our total backlog to 13 months and 1,656 articles, the second-lowest month-end total ever.

August Blitz: this one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 21 through 27 August; the theme was sports-related articles in honor of the 2016 Summer Olympics. Of the eight editors who signed up, five editors removed 11 articles from the backlog. A quiet blitz – everyone must be on vacation. Barnstars and rollover totals are located here. Thanks to all editors who took part.

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators: Jonesey95, Corinne and Tdlsk.

ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open!

[edit]

Hello, Myrtlegroggins. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2016 election, please review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 22:08, 21 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Guild of Copy Editors February 2017 News

[edit]
Guild of Copy Editors February 2017 News

Hello everyone, and welcome to the February 2017 GOCE newsletter. The Guild has been busy since the last time your coordinators sent out a newsletter!

December blitz: This one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 11 through 17 December; the themes were Requests and eliminating the November 2015 backlog. Of the 14 editors who signed up, nine editors completed 29 articles. Barnstars and rollover totals are located here. Thanks to all who took part.

January drive: The January drive was a great success. We set out to remove December 2015 and January and February 2016 from our backlog (195 articles), and by 22 January we had cleared those and had to add a third month (March 2016). At the end of the month we had almost cleared out that last month as well, for a total of 180 old articles removed from the backlog! We reduced our overall backlog by 337 articles, to a low of 1,465 articles, our second-lowest month-end total ever. We also handled all of the remaining requests from December 2016. Officially, 19 editors recorded 337 copy edits (over 679,000 words).

February blitz: The one-week February blitz, focusing on the remaining March 2016 backlog and January 2017 requests, ran from 12 to 18 February. Seven editors reduced the total in those two backlog segments from 32 to 10 articles, leaving us in good shape going in to the March drive.

Coordinator elections for the first half of 2017: In December, coordinators for the first half of 2017 were elected. Jonesey95 stepped aside as lead coordinator, remaining as coordinator and allowing Miniapolis to be the lead, and Tdslk and Corinne returned as coordinators. Thanks to all who participated!

Speaking of coordinators, congratulations to Jonesey95 on their well-deserved induction into the Guild of Copy Editors Hall of Fame. The plaque reads: "For dedicated service as lead coordinator (2014, 1 July – 31 December 2015 and all of 2016) and coordinator (1 January – 30 June 2015 and 1 January – 30 June 2017); exceptional template-creation work (considerably streamlining project administration), and their emphasis on keeping the GOCE a drama-free zone."

Housekeeping note: We do not send a newsletter before every drive or blitz. To have a better chance of knowing when the next event will start, add the GOCE's message box to your watchlist.

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators: Miniapolis, Jonesey95, Corinne and Tdslk.

Thanks for all your great work at Thurston College - well done.Dan arndt (talk) 07:08, 11 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Dan. It was a long one! I'll be back there for a little fine tuning. Best to you and happy editing, Myrtlegroggins (talk) 07:58, 11 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. I have seen that during your major copyedit you practically reverted my edits without notice. Links should be present only at the first occurrence of a word in an article, see WP:links. The lead is again too short and does not summarize the article, see WP:lead. So please before reverting edits without notice open a discussion on the talk page. Moreover, removing entire sections should be also firstly discussed. --Ita140188 (talk) 10:49, 20 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your comment. I addressed the problems with which the article had been tagged, especially over inclusion of specialist detail. The paragraphs removed were either unsourced conjecture, out of date or over inclusive. The article also needed some improvement in basic syntax and encyclopaedic tone. I'd suggest having another careful read through the copy edit in light of the above. Good luck to you, Myrtlegroggins (talk) 11:03, 20 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
ps I have copied our discussion to the article's talk page so future editors can see it.Myrtlegroggins (talk) 11:08, 20 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Boško Todorović

[edit]

G'day. I hate to discourage people from having a go in various areas of WP, but... I see you had a go at copy-editing Boško Todorović, but without putting too fine a point on it, you need to re-read WP:LEAD. You've deleted quite a bit of information from the lead that is clearly provided and cited in the body. The lead is supposed to be a summary of the body. Your deletion of a bunch of material from the lead was done with an edit summary of "ce: adding detail and improving syntax for readers who are not familiar with the subject" which is misleading at best, and serves to camouflage downright vandalism at worst. Your "input" has been reverted. Given similar comments on your talk page, I suggest you take a break from copyediting until you have familiarised yourself with WP policies and guidelines. Frankly, given you've been here as long as I have, it worries me that you think this is ok. WP relies on competent copy-editors who know our policies and guidelines. Have a better one. Cheers, Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 08:02, 9 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Part of the problem is, you did not wait until I had finished. Often the lead is best reviewed when the copy edit of the rest of the article is completed. I hope you can look at my changes and see that less convoluted sentences, with one idea per sentence, are easier to understand, especially if you area reader who is not an expert or a scholar in the field. Sadly, I see your comments as bullying and so I have moved this discussion to the talk page. Myrtlegroggins (talk) 08:22, 9 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Chief, it is not bullying when people have a problem with your work. It is called feedback. Some of it is necessarily not positive, but that's part of life isn't it? Deal with it. In any case, your approach to c/e is problematic. You deleted material from the lead, that was properly cited in the body and was highly relevant to the subject and belonged in the lead. You need to take that on board. If you can't, or won't, you need to take a step back. Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 08:29, 9 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, specifically that, about the lead in a long article - I can take that on board and change the way I ce. You weren't to know that I always go back and ce the ce. Nevertheless, I feel that feedback can be given in a kind and constructive way but often it is given in a mean and unhelpful way. I would never say to another editor what you have said to me today in the way that you said it. Myrtlegroggins (talk) 08:52, 9 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I've replied on the article talk page, but it is far from a long article, and I have never seen anyone copyedit an article the way you did there, in five years and more than 50,000 edits. I also don't apologise for being forthright, this is a fraught area of WP, and you need to know what you're doing. Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 09:11, 9 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Peacemaker67, I have sought more advice and on reflection, I want to apologise for the inconvenience I have caused you today. In the future I will take much more care in explaining any changes I make. I did not mean any harm. I do hope you can get rid of the ce template from your article. Myrtle. Myrtlegroggins (talk) 12:01, 9 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
That's fine. Good luck with your copyediting. Cheers, Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 02:24, 10 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Warfare in pre-colonial Philippines

[edit]

Hi! Thanks for initiating a major rewrite of Warfare in pre-colonial Philippines, because goodness knows that page needs work. After reading through it carefully, though, I am beginning to realize that major sections explaining geography, political context, and level of technological development need to be added to it. Also, I feel the article is full of broad generalizations based on specific examples. Not to mention a few statements that look like conjecture, although that'd mean factchecking most of the assertions line by line. A major part of the problem is that the polities/settlements covered in this article weren't actually historically united, by government, language, or culture. What they do have in common is belonging to the Philippine archipelago (with geologically vague boundaries towards the south) and the present Philippine state. I'm not actually sure how to proceed with a cleanup, or even what to tag things with. Thought I'd give you a heads up before you did much more work. And also ask for suggestions as to how to proceed. :D Thanks, - Alternativity (talk) 10:36, 3 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, I nearly forgot the thing that bothers me most: the outline itself seems very oriented towards a single large military force to me. The separate sections for service specializations/philosophies (infantry, cavalry, etc) are really throwing me off: I can't pinpoint the nonpresence of such terms in the military philosophies of the people groups in question... but I'm pretty sure their use misrepresents the level of specialization among the warriors among these peoples. I was gonna bring this up on the talk page, but I sort of wasn't ready for a rewrite. I saw you were gearing up for one, and wanted to coordinate. - Alternativity (talk) 10:46, 3 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Update: I've made a bunch of changes to the article outline in preparation for expansion, and to partially correct misrepresentation. I've discussed the major changes on the article's talk page, but in addition, I'm tagging verification/OR concerns in-line. Like I said, the article still needs lots of work. Just keeping you updated. Thanks! - Alternativity (talk) 11:54, 3 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. Sorry for not replying in so long. I had some things come up. Thank you very much for all of the above. I had the feeling the article was lacking as I worked on the copy edit. generally I will happily make the most of whatever an article has in a copy edit but it is disheartening to work on something that is not the best. I agree with all the points you made. One way forward would be to leave a message on the talk page that the article was not ready for a major copy edit and could be relisted if needs be. I'll check in later so we don't have any edit conflict. Cheers. Myrtlegroggins (talk) 11:16, 6 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Guild of Copy Editors December 2017 News

[edit]
Guild of Copy Editors December 2017 News

Hello copy editors! Welcome to the December 2017 GOCE newsletter, which contains nine months(!) of updates. The Guild has been busy and successful; your diligent efforts in 2017 has brought the backlog of articles requiring copy edit to below 1,000 articles for the first time. Thanks to all editors who have contributed their time and energy to help make this happen.

Our copy-editing drives (month-long backlog-reduction drives held in odd-numbered months) and blitzes (week-long themed editing in even-numbered months) have been very successful this year.

March drive: We set out to remove April, May, and June 2016 from our backlog and all February 2017 Requests (a total of 304 articles). By the end of the month, all but 22 of these articles were cleared. Officially, of the 28 who signed up, 22 editors recorded 257 copy edits (439,952 words). (These numbers do not always make sense when you compare them to the overall reduction in the backlog, because not all editors record every copy edit on the drive page.)

April blitz: This one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 16 through 22 April; the theme was Requests. Of the 15 who signed up, 9 editors completed 43 articles (81,822 words).

May drive: The goals were to remove July, August, and September 2016 from the backlog and to complete all March 2017 Requests (a total of 300 articles). By the end of the month, we had reduced our overall backlog to an all-time low of 1,388 articles. Of the 28 who signed up, 17 editors completed 187 articles (321,810 words).

June blitz: This one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 18 through 24 June; the theme was Requests. Of the 16 who signed up, 9 editors completed 28 copy edits (117,089 words).

2017 Coordinator elections: In June, coordinators for the second half of 2017 were elected. Jonesey95 moved back into the lead coordinator position, with Miniapolis stepping down to remain as coordinator; Tdslk and Corinne returned as coordinators, and Keira1996 rejoined after an extended absence. Thanks to all who participated!

July drive: We set out to remove August, September, October, and November 2016 from the backlog and to complete all May and June 2017 Requests (a total of 242 articles). The drive was an enormous success, and the target was nearly achieved within three weeks, so that December 2016 was added to the "old articles" list used as a goal for the drive. By the end of the month, only three articles from 2016 remained, and for the second drive in a row, the backlog was reduced to a new all-time low, this time to 1,363 articles. Of the 33 who signed up, 21 editors completed 337 articles (556,482 words).

August blitz: This one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 20 through 26 August; the theme was biographical articles tagged for copy editing for more than six months (47 articles). Of the 13 who signed up, 11 editors completed 38 copy edits (42,589 words).

September drive: The goals were to remove January, February, and March 2017 from the backlog and to complete all August 2017 Requests (a total of 338 articles). Of the 19 who signed up, 14 editors completed 121 copy edits (267,227 words).

October blitz: This one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 22 through 28 October; the theme was Requests. Of the 14 who signed up, 8 editors completed 20 articles (55,642 words).

November drive: We set out again to remove January, February, and March 2017 from the backlog and to complete all October 2017 Requests (a total of 207 articles). By the end of the month, these goals were reached and the backlog shrank to its lowest total ever, 997 articles, the first time it had fallen under one thousand (click on the graph above to see this amazing feat in graphical form). It was also the first time that the oldest copy-edit tag was less than eight months old. Of the 25 who signed up, 16 editors completed 159 articles (285,929 words).

2018 Coordinator elections: Voting is open for the election of coordinators for the first half of 2018. Please visit the election page to vote between now and December 31 at 23:59 (UTC). Thanks for participating!

Housekeeping note: We do not send a newsletter before (or after) every drive or blitz. To have a better chance of knowing when the next event will start, add the GOCE's message box to your watchlist.

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators: Jonesey95, Miniapolis, Corinne, Tdslk, and Keira1996.

GOCE February 2018 news

[edit]
Guild of Copy Editors February 2018 News

Welcome to the February 2018 GOCE newsletter in which you will find Guild updates since the December edition. We got to a great start for the year, holding the backlog at nine months. 100 requests were submitted in the first 6 weeks of the year and were swiftly handled with an average completion time of 9 days.

Coordinator elections: In December, coordinators for the first half of 2018 were elected. Jonesey95 remained as lead coordinator and Corrine, Miniapolis and Tdslk as assistant coordinators. Keira1996 stepped down as assistant coordinator and was replaced by Reidgreg. Thanks to all who participated!

End of year reports were prepared for 2016 and 2017, providing a detailed look at the Guild's long-term progress.

January drive: We set out to remove April, May, and June 2017 from our backlog and all December 2017 Requests (a total of 275 articles). As with previous years, the January drive was an outstanding success and by the end of the month all but 57 of these articles were cleared. Officially, of the 38 who signed up, 21 editors recorded 259 copy edits (490,256 words).

February blitz: This one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 11 through 17 February, focusing on Requests and the last articles tagged in May 2017. At the end of the week there were only 14 pending requests, with none older than 20 days. Of the 11 who signed up, 10 editors completed 35 copy edits (98,538 words).

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators: Jonesey95, Miniapolis, Corinne, Tdslk, and Reidgreg.

June 2018 GOCE newsletter

[edit]
Guild of Copy Editors June 2018 News

Welcome to the June 2018 GOCE newsletter, in which you will find Guild updates since the February edition. Progress continues to be made on the copyediting backlog, which has been reduced to 7 months and reached a new all-time low. Requests continue to be handled efficiently this year, with 272 completed by the end of May (an average completion time of 10.5 days). Fewer than 10% of these waited longer than 20 days, and the longest wait time was 29 days.

Wikipedia in general, and the Guild in particular, experienced a deep loss with the death on 20 March of Corinne. Corinne (a GOCE coordinator since 1 July 2016) was a tireless aide on the requests page, and her peerless copyediting is a part of innumerable GAs and FAs. Her good cheer, courtesy and tact are very much missed.

March drive: The goal was to remove June, July and August 2017 from our backlog and all February 2018 Requests (a total of 219 articles). This drive was an outstanding success, and by the end of the month all but eight of these articles were cleared. Of the 33 editors who signed up, 19 recorded 277 copy edits (425,758 words).

April blitz: This one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 15 through 21 April, focusing on Requests and the last eight articles tagged in August 2017. At the end of the week there were only 17 pending requests, with none older than 17 days. Of the nine editors who signed up, eight editors completed 22 copy edits (62,412 words).

May drive: We set out to remove September, October and November 2017 from our backlog and all April 2018 Requests (a total of 298 articles). There was great success this month with the backlog more than halved from 1,449 articles at the beginning of the month to a record low of 716 articles. Officially, of the 20 who signed up, 15 editors recorded 151 copy edits (248,813 words).

Coordinator elections: It's election time again. Nominations for Guild coordinators (who will serve a six-month term for the second half of 2018) have begun, and will close at 23:59 UTC on 15 June. All Wikipedia editors in good standing are eligible, and self-nominations are encouraged. Voting will take place between 00:01 UTC on 16 June and 23:59 UTC on 30 June.

June blitz: Stay tuned for this one-week copy-editing blitz, which will take place in mid-June.

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators: Corinne, Jonesey95, Miniapolis, Reidgreg and Tdslk.

Election reminder: It may only be March but don't forget our mid-year Election of Coordinators opens for nominations on 1 June. Coordinators normally serve a six-month term and are elected on an approval basis. Self-nominations are welcome. If you've thought of helping out at the Guild, or know of another editor who would make a good coordinator, please consider standing for election or nominating them here.

September 2019 GOCE Newsletter

[edit]
Guild of Copy Editors September 2019 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the September newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since June 2019.

June election: Reidgreg was chosen as lead coordinator, and is being assisted by Baffle gab1978, Miniapolis, Tdslk, and first-time coordinator Twofingered Typist. Jonesey95 took a respite after serving for six years. Thanks to everyone who participated!

June Blitz: From 16 to 22 June, we copy edited articles on the themes of nature and the environment along with requests. 12 participating editors completed 35 copy edits. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

July Drive: The year's fourth backlog-elimination drive was a great success, clearing all articles tagged in January and February, and bringing the copy-editing backlog to a low of five months and a record low of 585 articles while also completing 48 requests. Of the 30 people who signed up, 29 copyedited at least one article, a participation level last matched in May 2015. Final results and awards are listed here.

August Blitz: From 18 to 24 August, we copy edited articles tagged in March 2019 and requests. 12 participating editors completed 26 copy edits on the blitz. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Progress report: As of 03:00, 23 September 2019 (UTC), GOCE copyeditors had processed 413 requests since 1 January. The backlog of tagged articles stood at 599 articles, close to our record month-end low of 585.

Requests page: We are experimenting with automated archiving of copy edit requests; a discussion on REQ Talk (permalinked) initiated by Bobbychan193 has resulted in Zhuyifei1999 writing a bot script for the Guild. Testing is now underway and is expected to be completed by 3 October; for this reason, no manual archiving of requests should be done until the testing period is over. We will then assess the bot's performance and discuss whether to make this arrangement permanent.

September Drive: Our current backlog-elimination drive is open until 23:59 on 30 September (UTC) and is open to all copy editors. Sign up today!

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators, Baffle gab1978, Miniapolis, Reidgreg, Tdslk and Twofingered Typist.

GOCE December 2019 Newsletter

[edit]
Guild of Copy Editors December 2019 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the December 2019 GOCE newsletter, an update of Guild happenings since the September edition. Our Annual Report should be ready in late January.

Election time: Nominations for the election of a new tranche of Guild coordinators to serve for the first half of 2020 will be open from 1 to 15 December. Voting will then take place and the election will close on 31 December at 23:59 UTC. Positions for Guild coordinators, who perform the important behind-the-scenes tasks that keep our project running smoothly, are open to all Wikipedians in good standing. We welcome self-nominations so please consider nominating yourself if you've ever thought about helping out; it's your Guild and it doesn't run itself!

September Drive: Of the thirty-two editors who signed up, twenty-three editors copy edited at least one article; they completed 39 requests and removed 138 articles from the backlog, bringing the backlog to a low of 519 articles.

October Blitz: This event ran from 13 to 19 October, with themes of science, technology and transport articles tagged for copy edit, and Requests. Sixteen editors helped remove 29 articles from the backlog and completed 23 requests.

November Drive: Of the twenty-eight editors who signed up for this event, twenty editors completed at least one copy edit; they completed 29 requests and removed 133 articles from the backlog.

Our December Blitz will run from 15 to 21 December. Sign up now!

Progress report: From September to November 2019, GOCE copy editors processed 154 requests. Over the same period, the backlog of articles tagged for copy editing was reduced by 41% to an all-time low of 479 articles.

Request archiving: The archiving of completed requests has now been automated. Thanks to Zhuyifei1999 and Bobbychan193, YiFeiBot is now archiving the Requests page. Archiving occurs around 24 hours after a user's signature and one of the templates {{Done}}, {{Withdrawn}} or {{Declined}} are placed below the request. The bot uses the Guild's standard "purpose codes" to determine the way it should archive each request so it's important to use the correct codes and templates.

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators; Reidgreg, Baffle gab1978, Miniapolis, Tdslk and Twofingered Typist.

GOCE March newsletter

[edit]
Guild of Copy Editors March 2020 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the March newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since December 2019. All being well, we're planning to issue these quarterly in 2020, balancing the need to communicate widely with the avoidance of filling up talk pages. Don't forget you can unsubscribe at any time; see below.

Election results: There was little changeover in the roster of Guild Coordinators, with Miniapolis stepping down with distinction as a coordinator emeritus while Jonesey95 returned as lead coordinator. The next election is scheduled for June 2020 and all Wikipedians in good standing may participate.

January Drive: Thanks to everyone for the splendid work, completing 215 copy edits including 56 articles from the Requests page and 116 backlog articles from the target months of June to August 2019. At the conclusion of the drive there was a record low of 323 articles in the copy editing backlog. Of the 27 editors who signed up for the drive, 21 copyedited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

February Blitz: Of the 15 editors who signed up for this one-week blitz, 13 completed at least one copy edit. A total of 32 articles were copy edited, evenly split between the twin goals of requests and the oldest articles from the copy-editing backlog. Full results are here.

March Drive: Currently underway, this event is targeting requests and backlog articles from September to November 2019. As of 18 March, the backlog stands at a record low of 253 articles and is expected to drop further as the drive progresses. Awards will be given to everyone who copyedits at least one article from the backlog. Help set a new record and sign up now!

Progress report: As of 18 March, GOCE copyeditors have completed 161 requests in 2020 and there was a net reduction of 385 articles from the copy-editing backlog – a 60% decrease from the beginning of the year. Well done and thank you everyone!

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Jonesey95, Baffle gab1978, Reidgreg, Tdslk and Twofingered Typist

Current events

Election time: Nomination of candidates in our mid-year Election of Coordinators opened on 1 June, and voting will take place from 00:01 on 16 June. GOCE coordinators normally serve a six-month term and are elected on an approval basis. Self-nominations are welcome. Drive and blitz reports

March Drive: Self-isolation from coronavirus may have played a hand in making this one of our most successful backlog elimination drives. The copy-editing backlog was reduced from 477 to a record low of 118 articles, a 75% reduction. The last four months of 2019 were cleared, reducing the backlog to three months. Fifty requests were also completed, and the total word count of copy-edited articles was 759,945. Of the 29 editors who signed up, 22 completed at least one copy edit. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

April Blitz: This blitz ran from 12 to 18 April with a theme of Indian military history. Of the 18 people who signed up, 14 copyedited at least one article. Participants claimed a total of 60 copyedits. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

May Drive: This event marked the 10th anniversary of the GOCE's copy-editing drives, and set a goal of diminishing the backlog to just one month of articles, as close to zero articles as possible. We achieved the goal of eliminating all articles that had been tagged prior to the start of the drive, for the first time in our history! Of the 51 editors who signed up, 43 copyedited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Other news

Progress report: as of 2 June, GOCE participants had processed 328 requests since 1 January, which puts us on pace to exceed any previous year's number of requests. As of the end of the May drive, the backlog stood at just 156 articles, all tagged in May 2020.

Outreach: To mark the 10th anniversary of our first Backlog Elimination Drive, The Signpost contributor and GOCE participant Puddleglum2.0 interviewed project coordinators and copy-editors for the journal's April WikiProject Report. The Drive and the current Election of Coordinators have also been covered in The Signpost's May News and Notes page.

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Jonesey95, Baffle gab1978, Reidgreg, Tdslk and Twofingered Typist.

If you've thought of helping out at the Guild, or know of another editor who would make a good coordinator, please consider standing for election or nominating them here.

December Blitz: We have scheduled a week-long copy-editing blitz for 12 to 18 December. Sign up now!

Other news

It is with great sadness that we report the death on 19 November of Twofingered Typist, who was active with the Guild almost daily for the past several years. His contributions long exceeded the thresholds for the Guild's highest awards, and he had a hand in innumerable good and featured article promotions as a willing collaborator. Twofingered Typist also served as a Guild coordinator from July 2019 to June 2021. He is sorely missed by the Wikipedia community.

Progress report: As of 30 November, GOCE copyeditors have completed 619 requests in 2021 and there were 51 requests awaiting completion on the Requests page. The backlog stood at 946 articles tagged for copy-editing (see monthly progress graph above).
