Hello again, can you help sort out this template? I can't make it smaller and it's MASSIVELY wide! Thanks, WVRMAD•Talk •Guestbook 14:33, 18 April 2010 (UTC)
- Yeah, I'll look at it either later or tomorrow. Be advised I've mass-tagged images by Duncharris as missing permission, and there are a lot of old railway photos in there. Don't know if any are used on pages you edit, but watch out and maybe transwiki to en to use under fair use rules instead. -mattbuck (Talk) 16:42, 18 April 2010 (UTC)
- Is that better? -mattbuck (Talk) 17:39, 18 April 2010 (UTC)
- Loads better, Monmouth Troy bit looks ok to me, if I think of anything better I'll let you know, thanks! Is there anywhere I can get the all of the images Duncharris uploaded so I can check them all and how would I get fair use proof for the photos? Thanks again, WVRMAD•Talk •Guestbook 18:40, 19 April 2010 (UTC)
- Look here - start at the top, and work quickly to the bottom because most are tagged as missing permission several days ago and so are liable to be deleted pretty soon. There are over 1000 uploads, some 500-800 images missing permission (and so tagged) at a guess. It might also be helpful to look via my contribs. -mattbuck (Talk) 20:23, 19 April 2010 (UTC)
- These look good: File:Aberystwyth VoR station.JPG, File:GWR 3822 at Cheltenham Racecourse.jpg, File:GWR 6430 at Cheltenham Racecourse.JPG, File:GWR 4247 at Toddington.JPG, File:7428 at Aberystwyth.jpg, File:22 AEC GWR railcar.jpg, File:4566 on G&WR.jpg. How do I get fair use proof if I don't know the authors? WVRMAD•Talk •Guestbook 18:44, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
- You don't need proof for fair use, just an argument as to why they can be used as fair use - ie not replaceable by a free alternative. Of all those, I'd say only 7428 has a good argument at not being replaceable - all the others are of a heritage railway which still operates so are replaceable. See WP:FU. -mattbuck (Talk) 18:51, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

- For me, that would be denied. (As an aside, don't say unknown for low res, either it is or isn't, this one is.) You say it's to illustrate the article - illustration is generally replaceable. You need to say specifically why you want to use this image and not something more recent which is free, and also why the image is not replaceable. -mattbuck (Talk) 14:32, 27 April 2010 (UTC)

Dalek variants
I have started a thread on the talk page, and asked MrMarmite to contribute. If he reverts you again, I recommend that you do not undo this, in case you get reported for edit warring. Another editor can undo if they agree with you about inclusion, so please contribute on the talk page. I can't work out if the issue is whether the Daleks didn't mention the colours on the show, or something else. Thanks --Elen of the Roads (talk) 10:43, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks, I wasn't going to revert again, and I think my last edit summary got a bit personal. -mattbuck (Talk) 12:04, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
- Hopefully that makes an end of it. I just could see the argument escalating, and didn't want anyone to get blocked over it :) --Elen of the Roads (talk) 15:30, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
Photographs of Class 222 Interiors
Hi Mattbuck,
I wanted these two images deleted as I replaced them with better images.
They are:
- 222001 M First Class Interior.JPG
- 222001 M Standard Class.JPG
Please can you respect my request and delete those two images? Why does it have to be so difficult to put in a request when I made it quite clear that I uploaded two images and I wanted the older images deleted? --Peter Skuce (talk) 18:12, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
I would like to apologise for my attitude and for me losing my temper. I get frustrated that it can be difficult to do things on here - such as deleting old images that I have uploaded and then wanting to replace them with more recent, improved images. I am sorry, I just wish that there was a quicker way of deleting one's image if the same person takes a better shot and decides to upload that. I am looking forward to Tuesdays trip to Gordon Hill, when I should be taking photographs of Class 313 trains, some of which will be in a six car formation. There will be a naming at 1515. --Peter Skuce (talk) 20:21, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
- Sounds spiffy, my camera is currently broken so likely won't be taking any photos until I hopefully get a new one for my birthday in a few months time. But that's ok, I have 2000 photos to sort through from a few trips last week. As I mentioned, Commons wants to keep as many images as possible, as long as they're not copyvios, even if some are "better" than others. What one person wants from an image may be completely different from what someone else wants, and so it's generally preferable to keep both images at commons - for sure, change en.wp pages to the new image, but bear in mind that we can't know what people may want down the line. Besides, unless they're specifically better images of Midland Mainline 222 interiors, they're not a true replacement anyway. -mattbuck (Talk) 20:52, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks, however what do you mean 'sounds spiffy'? --Peter Skuce (talk) 22:22, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
- Let's just say good. Try this definition. -mattbuck (Talk) 22:51, 22 April 2010 (UTC)

Meeting in Bristol
Hi this is Steve Virgin from the Board of Wikimedia UK
I am a fellow Bristolian
We have a Wikimedia Conference in town this weekend
We were getting some of the Bristol Project Wikipedians together at the Watershed on Saturday night for a Wiki Meet at around 6.30pm.
This is a good opportunity to meet people from the national Chapter, other Chapters from around the world and from the Wikimedia Foundation. There is a bar tab to help proceedings and we would be very keen to see you there.
RSVP - let me know if you are able to come and feel free to invite any other local Wikipedians in Bristol
Steve virgin (talk) 21:29, 12 May 2010 (UTC)
- Hi Steve. Thanks for the invite but I'm afraid I'll be in Nottingham until mid-June at the earliest. Hope you have a good time. -mattbuck (Talk) 21:38, 12 May 2010 (UTC)

Revision to Sid Meier's Alien Crossfire and Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri articles
I noticed that you have revised either Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri or Sid Meier's Alien Crossfire.
I intend to revise those articles following the Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games/Article guidelines. There are more details on the discussion pages of those articles. I'd be interested in any comments you have. It would be best if your comments were on the discussion pages of the two articles.
Thank you.

- I'm sorry, but I expect a modicum of intelligence from admins, seeing as how I work mostly on Commons, and seeing someone decline an F8 because the file was not named, even though there was a nowcommons which did name the file one line above it, is just ridiculous. -mattbuck (Talk) 18:17, 13 June 2010 (UTC)

You are now a Reviewer
Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).
Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.
When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.
If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 03:10, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

Challenging your challenge and defending my image.
Sorry fella, but if a personally created image of sonic screwdrivers for noncommercial use in visual identification of the devices described, in a different medium than the devices were represented, is a non-free use, then an article about sonic screwdrivers also qualifies as non-free use (textual description of said devices for use in identifying and understanding the in-story and out-of-story use of the devices, also transformative in medium and purpose (for identification and educational noncommercial uses) and a potentially immeasurably negligible portion of said original work (47 years of tv shows)).
I appreciate you trying to protect Wikipedia, but you're erring on the side of making Wikipedia useless -- by your judgement the article itself should be deleted as a derived work. Dodger (talk) 23:14, 4 July 2010 (UTC)

Nottingham University
Hi there,
You seem to have done some commendable work on the Nottingham University wiki in the past. I'm wondering if you could look at it again. Right now there have been a couple of complaints that the whole thing looks like one big PR exercise, especially the rankings and reputation (see talk). Essentially, rankings that are good are championed whilst bad ones are ignored, or the validity of those rankings are questioned. It still talks of Nottingham being among the Sutton Trust's 13 highest ranked universities- no such official group exists, and this was based on the 1999 league tables, which have since been superceded be eleven new ones. The neutral tone of the article is in serious doubt, to the extent it would not pass GA status now I fear. When I made edits and asked for citations, they were quickly reverted by another IP.

Speedy tags on File talk pages
I note you've tagged a number of File talk pages as WP:CSD#G8, some of which have now been zapped. I don't disagree; they should never have been created in the first place. They only exist because 83.67.147.66 was in the habit of putting irrelevant comments and/or full-size images on various (not just talk) pages. It was seemingly at random, but he often targeted the same page multiple times. He's done something similar on Commons, too. --Redrose64 (talk) 16:58, 20 October 2010 (UTC)

It's 87002, which is sadly the only of the class still running in the UK. I don't have a commons account, but I'll get around to uploading it. ArtVandelay13 (talk) 14:44, 26 October 2010 (UTC)
- You should have a commons login; if unsure, see meta:Help:Unified login.
- To set it up quickly, visit Special:MergeAccount, and it'll immediately attempt to create a commons login as well as a whole bunch of others. All of these will be the same username and password as your English Wikipedia login. It'll then list the ones that succeeded - when I do this, I get 35 different Wikipedias, plus 12 others incl. commons. --Redrose64 (talk) 15:52, 26 October 2010 (UTC)

- I think you may have to use LUECKE a lot. -mattbuck (Talk) 21:30, 3 November 2010 (UTC)
- Well, the Wye Valley Railway and Coleford Railway are very stretched but I'm trying not to use LUECKE as it is a map of all the lines, and so all of the routes are important.
- Thanks for the reply, I'll come back and bother you once I get stuck! WVRMAD•Talk •Guestbook 10:09, 5 November 2010 (UTC)

How can you say I censored this article? I did not delete the picture ;D --Prust (talk) 01:16, 27 November 2010 (UTC)
- Your rationale for the move was to protect children. Doing so compromised the article's quality. That's censorship. -mattbuck (Talk) 03:11, 27 November 2010 (UTC)
Would you like to meet Jimmy Wales in Bristol 13th Jan 2011?
As you may have heard Jimmy Wales is coming to give a talk at the Victoria Rooms in Bristol on 13th January 2011 as part of wikipedia's 10th birthday celebrations. There is a possibility of a small group of local active wikipedians to meet him for 20 mins before the talk. If you are interested could you respond on the centralised discussion on the Bristol wikiproject talk page?— Rod talk 20:20, 27 November 2010 (UTC)
You have reverted my edit on this article, where I removed a blurry, low-quality photo. In my opinion, the CG model clarifies the subject better. The photo is blurry, and does not fit with Commons guidelines. commons:COM:PORN MikeNicho231 (talk) 20:20, 29 November 2010 (UTC)
- I'm well aware of commons guidelines, I prefer to spend my time there where I can make an edit without 1000 years of discussion. The guideline states "we may keep the file if we have no better file on a subject it can illustrate" - we do not have a better image, it's the only one we have of an actual pearl necklace. Drawings are all well and good, but it is always helpful to have an actual photo. -mattbuck (Talk) 20:33, 29 November 2010 (UTC)

Coprophilia image question
Hi Matt. I see you're defending the use of the image of a woman with feces in her mouth in the Coprophilia article. Before one gets to all the usual questions about NOTCENSORED and IDONTLIKEIT, doesn't the image have to illustrate the topic? Per the article, this is "the paraphilia involving sexual pleasure from feces." Although this is an image of a very young woman who seems to have had someone defecate in her mouth and on her shoulders, there is nothing to unequivocally indicate that she is getting pleasure from the feces (or is even consenting to the situation), and it is entirely speculative that anyone else involved is getting pleasure from feces either (as opposed to from humiliating the individual in the picture). I wonder if it's worth considering the informational content of the image before advancing to the NOTCENSORED defense?KD Tries Again (talk) 05:09, 30 November 2010 (UTC)KD Tries Again
- In principle yes, but let's consider a less vomit-inducing example - someone being whipped. People derive pleasure from that, but how would we show it as inducing pleasure? You can't really. With scat, at least half the pleasure is mental, getting off on doing something totally disgusting/degrading. But that doesn't mean the act doesn't make you a bit sick. I don't think that it's necessary to show the person masturbating or whatever, especially given social mores that equate nudity and sex. -mattbuck (Talk) 12:13, 30 November 2010 (UTC)
- It's very easy to find pictures of people who are clearly consenting to SM practices, and the inference they are enjoying themselves is easy too. It might be harder to find similar images for this article, but that's not a good reason for using this image. It's perfectly possible that both the subject in the picture and the other people involved find feces aversive: the picture might exist for reasons quite other than deriving sexual pleasure from feces. A good analogy would be trying to illustrate an article on SM practices with just a non-specific picture of someone being tortured.KD Tries Again (talk) 14:06, 30 November 2010 (UTC)KD Tries Again

In answer to your edit summary, yes, we do indeed make article titles convenient for our readers, and they do not necessarily have to be precisely the full name of the subject of the article. I direct you to our article for "Dr. Strangelove or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb", which you will, of course, find at Dr. Strangelove.
