Residence in infobox

Hi,

Have you noticed editors (IPs usually, so I'm not sure if it is one or many, or if there are accounts also that I haven't noticed) changing the infobox from person to something else that still has residence.

I see these when the new infobox has an error. Today there was this edit going from person to writer just to be able add residence. It caused an error because writer doesn't have height (which in this case isn't relevant and shouldn't have been in the infobox anyway). There was also this edit, by the same IP, which changed person to author, apparently just to make the existing residence visible again, and caused an error because author doesn't have a footnotes para.

I asked if we should discuss removing residence from other infoboxes in January, but there was no comment. What do you think? The RFC on hometown is still open, and the same thing may happen again since hometown is probably also used in some of the other biography infoboxes. Maybe we should wait for that to close and then have another discussion about removing residence and hometown everywhere (unless there is some specific case where it is "key info", like maybe officeholder where there are residency requirements). Hello MB and thanks for this post. I did not know that was happening. I am aware that there are some infoboxes out there (I think the "singer" box is one) that did not get the field deactivated when the "person" one had it removed last year. Looks like the IP didn't like the outcome of Template talk:Infobox person/Archive 34#Residence parameter. I have seen editors try this kind of thing before. I don't think we would need another discussion for the subsidiary (there might be a better word but I can't think of it at the moment) infoboxes since they are all offshoots (there it is :-) ) of the "person" one - but I could be wrong. I filed this Template talk:Infobox writer#Edit request to try and get the field removed at that infobox. We will see what happens there as that could answer our question. In my rfc about the hometown field Template talk:Infobox person#Home town field I did ask that it be removed from the offshoot infoboxes. Thanks again for your post. Infoboxes should be treated with extreme caution. Not everyone likes them in all places. WP:BRD applies and if they're reverted as part of that process, then a discussion should take place. Snaresbrook Crown Court, I see, now has one and it is in utter eyesore. The person who added it, Paul Carpenter, whilst good intentioned, filled it with errors and knows nothing of what troubles infoboxes can cause. I'm whacked out with trying to fight for the rights of those who don't want them on the articles they create, so I've left him to it. We are in a race to the bottom on this site, sadly. I doubt that edit request will work. Everytime I asked for a change to a template that way, it was denied because I didn't provide the exact (pre-tested) code. I have learned to approach a specific Template Editor. There should probably be a category Category:Infobox person using residence like, so there is a little work involved. I haven't worked with this before MB so thanks for adding your experience. I'm not sure what pretesting is needed. AFAIK there wasn't any pretesting when the field was removed from the person infobox. Oh well. As to the category your suggestion is a good one. This has been my experience with edit requests on templates. Glad Jonesey95 saw this, he is one of the very helpful TEs I go to directly. Anyway, Category:Pages using Infobox writer with unknown parameters is up to 870 and still growing. I had this at zero, so these are all |residence=. Maybe we should ask Jonesey to dump these into Category:Infobox person using residence too and maybe rename it to Category:Pages with a biography infobox using residence. That way they are all in one place, and we have a category that can be used for the other templates as well. (Unless you don't want that one to go up after all your work :) MB 05:14, 3 September 2020 (UTC)

After all these months of editing I would like to empty the current category before dumping any other articles into - should be done before the end of the year. But that is probably just me being O/C. Regarding a Infobox edit

Hello Gpkp. The residence field has been deactivated for that infobox and is, thus, deprecated. I also cleaned up the image section per the documentation for the field at {{Infobox person}}. None of the parameters that were there work on this wikipedia. I have a suspicion that they were copy pasted from another wiki where they were used but that is just a guess on my part. Regards. Thank you MarnetteD, for the info. In {{Infobox person}}, for the image parameter, its mentioned as ′...do not use an image placeholder′. Dummy images of male and female are forbidden to use. Actually in the present article of discussion, I used this template: {{CSS image crop}} which is allowed in wiki. Would you agree if the CSS properties are reinstated? (not the residence field).

Kubrick

What an incredible experience Onel5969. The closest I ever got to the man was having been in the section of the now gone Stapleton International Airport that is seen briefly as Halloran walks through it after his plane has landed in Colorado. Considering that was a second unit filming situation I didn't get all that close to SK :-) The mention in Rama is both clever and cute. To be clear, I didn't actually meet him. He was in London and I was in L.A. at the time. I spoke to him on the phone from my agent's office. It was actually a bit of a fiasco. I had a friend who's mother knew Hasford, who wrote the book, Short-Timers. When she read it, she said she immediately thought of me in the role of Joker. She also knew Kubrik and called him to tell him about me. We talked and he set up a video shoot for me to audition for him. Deprecated fields in infoboxes

When were "birth_name" and "other_names" deprecated? I noticed your removal of those items from Jimmy Lydon.

On a related topic, does Wikipedia have a page that lists deprecated fields or a means of notifying when a field is deprecated? How is an editor to keep up with changes like that? When I checked tonight, "birth_name" and "other_names" are still shown on the Template:Infobox person page, so I don't know how to monitor changes. Eddie Blick (talk) 00:36, 19 September 2020 (UTC)

Hello Eddie Blick you are correct so I'll add this longish explanation. Please note the documentation for the fields at {{Infobox person/doc}}. For birth name "Name at birth; only use if different from |name=" The field really is meant for people like Michael Caine or Kirk Douglas whose birth names are entirely different from the names they are known by. In this case Jimmy is the nickname for James so it is not different in any material way. I should also note that parents rarely use only an initial for their child's middle name. In fact as I look through the article there is no sourced info confirming that middle initial of "J". If you can find one that would be great. As to other names the guideline reads "Other notable names for the person, if different from |name= and |birth_name=" James Lydon is exactly the same name. Thus the removal is correct for both. If you look at the infobox before my edit you have the same info in it three times - three and a half if you count the caption for the pic :-) Now the edit summary comes from the fact that I am helping to clean out the Category:Infobox person using residence because the residence field is deprecated. The cat started at over 38,000 articles last November. In trying to get as many done as possible each day I use the drop down menu for the edit summary so I understand the concern and confusion on your part since I use the briefest one that comes up first. While these two name fields are still part of the infobox they are in a sense "deprecated" since they were used incorrectly. As to your other question - yes keeping up with changes is a hassle around here since they happen all the time. In this specific case you can look at the documentation for the template to see if the fields have been removed from it. Other places to ask include the talk page for the template as well as the WP:HD or the WP:VPT. I hope this is of some help. I also hope you have a pleasant weekend. Yes, we all come to Wikipedia with varied backgrounds and perspectives, so it's easy to view articles and editing in different ways. Additionally, Wikipedia has so many facets of guidelines, style, etc. I started here in 2014, and I still encounter things I didn't know about what to do or not do. I appreciate your work on the Category:Infobox person using residence. I have worked on Category:Unassessed biography articles, but sometimes I tire of it and take a break. I also try to watch for infoboxes that need tidying in areas such as removing non-notable parents' names and changing "children" from names to a number except for those who are notable. Apologies Theroadislong. I used the wrong edit summary. The way those refs are set up they do meet the criteria at WP:CITEFOOT. However if you want the refs in that article to be formatted with cite templates you will need to strip out everything but the url in the ref tags. For example you would need to change this <ref>Change Makers [https://startnetwork.org/change-makers Change Makers Call]. Start Network. Retrieved 6 October 2020.</ref> into this <ref>https://startnetwork.org/change-makers</ref>. Neither refill nor citer can fix a reference with anything other than the url within the tags. Hi Deb. Sadly - or maybe it is gladly since it gives me something to do :-) - there are a whole bunch of editors who create articles with bare urls and then let others format them. Some of them put the fix tag at the top of the article while others let someone else (like you) do it. You might try posting on their talk page with any suggestions that you have but I know that doesn't always work. From my end setting refill on its way to fixing the bare urls is so much easier when there is just one template at the top of the article. Anything you can do to help will be much appreciated. I just noticed you started working on infobox writer. I was expecting to get these done before you finished person :) I noticed you are leaving |nationality=. It is usually redundant per WP:INFOBOXNTLY - not sure if you are aware of this, it's relatively new. MB 04:00, 20 October 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for making me aware of that MB. Fri or Sat Primebot started removing the residence field and cut the number left from 7700 to just over 200. It stopped last night so I polished off the rest today. I was kinda glad about that as, after 11 months of chipping away at the category I did want the dubious honor of getting the last few manually. I know we need to start getting the hometown ones that are still out there in other infoboxes including the person one. I did get a chunk of them after the RFC but there are many still to zap. RIP Sean

On reading of Sean Connery's death this morning I reflected on the fact that it has been a sad year for Bond film fans. Honor Blackman from Goldfinger passed in April then Diana Rigg from On Her Majesty's Secret Service in September. Some of the films he made while trying to break away from Bond are among my favorites including The Red Tent where he played Roald Amundsen, Wind and the Lion as Mulai Ahmed er Raisuni and Robin and Marian as Robin Hood. Many other wonderful films could be in this list but I'll finish by mentioning that The Man Who Would Be King is, for me, one of the greatest adventure films ever made. Advice on cleaning up references?

Hello RJFJR. You seem to be using refill okay. There is one thing to be aware of (if you aren't already) a reference has to be completely bare for refill to work - like this https://www.rte.ie/entertainment/book-reviews/2001/0315/445335-outofme/ - If there is anything else - dates - author name - even a period at the end of the url https://www.rte.ie/entertainment/book-reviews/2001/0315/445335-outofme/. refill will skip the link. As to manual fixes the first thing I do is run the url at Citer. It fixes a fair amount but you do need to look at the whole ref that it creates to make sure it is okay. For instance it will format a url from Amazon but it won't give it a proper title. Now the ones that are still left bare need to be fixed completely by hand. What I do then is have two or more windows open on my computer. I'll have the editing field for the article in one window. I find the bare url - copy/paste it into a second windows browser and hit enter to see what comes up. Quite often you will find the link is dead so you can slap a {{dead link|date=November 2020}} template on the reference in the article. If something does come up then I have a blank cite web template in my sandbox (which is in a third window) {{cite web |url= |title= |last= |first= |date= |website= |format=PDF|access-date=2020-11-01}} that I copy paste it into the article. I then start to fill the fields with the info available by more copy pasting. Please note my blank template has the "|format=PDF" That is because PDFs will make up the majority of the bare urls that refill and citer won't fix. It is a field I have to remember to remove for those urls that aren't PDFs. Also, there are many sources that don't have enough info to fill all the fields so you can skip or remove them. After you hit "show preview" or "save" it is worth going to the reference section and taking a look at things. Sometimes you will make an error in the formatting. Sometimes a bare url will slip through. Also there might be red messages pointing out that there are things other than formatting that need looking at - for example the "|website=" field doesn't like it if you include the whole url |website=https://www.rte.ie is wrong while |website=www.rte.ie will make the red warning go away. I know this is a brief recap (probably too brief) of some of the ins and outs of formatting bare urls manually. I've been working on them for several years and have gotten used to some of their quirks. I still make mistakes but things can always be fixed with further edits. You will, naturally, get more adept at dealing with them as your editing continues. Best regards. MarnetteD|Talk 04:26, 1 November 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for the advice. I go back and look at some of the recent changes I made to see if people have changed them to know if I'm making mistakes and what I see is sometimes I run refill and then you run refill and fix more references but I haven't figured out why it works better for you. I've noticed our double runs of refill as well RJFJR and I have no idea why that happens. As to the wayback I think I've seen refill format some of them but if it doesn't they have to be done manually as I've never seen citer fix one. Cheers. MarnetteD|Talk 17:32, 1 November 2020 (UTC)

Question re: Bare URLs

Greetings MarnetteD, I have a question re: Bare URLs. I noticed that you removed the maintence tag I added for bare URLs on Ellen Rothenberg, an article I created. I realize I must not understand what bareURLs are. I tagged the article because several of the items that had been added to the Performance and Exhibition sections have links that go directly to URLs for external websites, rather than being added with properly formatted citations. Is there a name for this type of reference type, and is that manner of referencing OK per WP guidelines? Hello Netherzone. I call them external links that are in the body of the article - though there may be other ways to refer to them. They are frowned on but per IAR and the fact that there were so many of them I left them on that page. One solution is that you put them inside ref tags <ref></ref> and then refill2 can be run on them. That will get them into cite templates. Quick note on Wipeout (2008 American game show)

Hello Aasim. I think it okay. I reworded the lede at the top of the page a bit. Then the IP removed the "See also" section which makes senses since all pf those shows are in the navbox at the bottom of the article. They then made this edit which was also useful - section headers should only have the first word capitalized - the removal of the link to the other article was good as it was already linked with the use of the {{Main|Wipeout (2021 game show)}} template just above it.
