World Discoverer fixes

I am curious as to what copyrights were in question on my current article on World Discoverer. It shows you made some changes and I was curious what those were. Also am curious if you re-rated the ship under discussion. Please let me know. Lukeduk1980 (talk) 04:26, 17 September 2009 (UTC)

Not sure what you mean by copyrights. I copyedited the article, and added a fact tag to two assertions that I found rather unbelievable. In fact, now that I've reread those two sentences, it's clear that they need to be dropped entirely:

1. "The double-hulled construction could withstand impact with glaciers while sustaining very little damage to the ship or crew." - No. A double hull does not render a ship nearly impervious toimpact with a glacier. To be fair, I presume 'iceberg' rather than 'glacier' was intended here, but still...see MS Explorer: a double hull is much safer from an impact point of view, but Very Bad Things can still happen.
2. "The World Discoverer had a 8,000-mile cruising range, allowing the ship to be the first ship to ever transit the Northwest Passage." - The World Discoverer was most certainly not the first ship to ever transit the Northwest Passage; I suspect Roald Amundsen would have something to say about that.

I assessed the article at C-class for WP:SHIPS, and Start-class for WP:SHIPWRECKS (the difference is a mere technicality, as the shipwrecks project does not use C-class). In my edit summary, I mentioned that the fact tags need resolution in order for me to up the assessment to B-class for both. I'd be happy to update it once those are resolved. Clearing the name from BEWA Discoverer to World Discoverer under ship characteristics, under ship propulsion, misspelled diesel as eiesel, lower cased many of the wording in ship characteristics, other things on there were correct like "Solomon Islands were undergoing civil war and was boarded with equipment taken from the ship." and other things, I will clean this up better. In response to the 4 changes you mentioned above:

• I did not "change the name from BEWA Discoverer to World Discoverer under ship characteristics";
• I did mistakenly spell diesel as eiesel;
• I did properly "lower case many of the wording in ship characteristics" as we do not randomly capitalize words like Passengers and Diesel Engines nor should Cabins be capitalized in the infobox parameter |Ship cabins=; and
• The sentence "Solomon Islands were undergoing civil war and was boarded with equipment taken from the ship" simply does not make any sense.

I'm sorry for making the typo on 'diesel', but...I have been a member of the Ships and Shipwrecks wikiprojects for over two years, and a copyeditor for featured articles for nearly that length of time. I really do know how to do this. Maralia (talk) 05:51, 17 September 2009 (UTC)

I apologize for any upset. If I may ask for learning purposes, why do we lowercase all the characteristics in the ship characteristics box? I figured words could be capitalized. Also, why do we move the shipwreck photo to the reference page from your last change. Also, im trying to find some of my sources my 3 months ago on this project. Needless to say, if I cannot fin them, I will delete them. I do not question your expertise on your editing, however, it would make things alittle easier for me to understand why some of the bigger changes have taken affect. Thank you. You should of course feel free to ask for the logic behind any of the changes I made; the wholesale reversion made me feel like I had wasted my time, but spending time explaining things is not time wasted :) Regarding capitalization: we use this sparingly on Wikipedia (see WP:MOSCAPS for more info). I moved the shipwreck photo to the References section to avoid sandwiching text between that image and the infobox (see WP:MOSIMAGE for more info). Maralia (talk) 16:37, 17 September 2009 (UTC)

Alright Maralia - I have cleaned up the World Discoverer article and made many of the corrections you installed on the page. In regards to the "sandwiching" of text, I really wanted to use the photo of the Discoverer while in port under the service history heading. I could not bring it to the bottom right or left of the page as it would create large gaps in the article. To get the better of both worlds, I have switched the photos and miminize the photo to pit in place between the text and the ship characteristics but made the photo small so it will not do too much sandwiching. I could not find the source of the first ship to travel the Northwest Passage but it did seem alittle odd to me as I read it now. I have reworded the saysing, "The World Discoverer also had a 8,000 mile cruising range allowing the ship travel the Northwest Passage." I figure this would be ok with you. Also, I have de-capitalized many things in ship characteristics but left Abbreviations, Company Names, Locations like Sandfly Passage since it is a noun because it is a place. I was wondering if you wanted to re-assess the article for a possible higher ranking for the WikiProject: ships assessment scale. I have taken a quick look. I'm sorry to say that the article still needs a lot of cleanup for typos, bad grammar, and punctuation errors. You have not implemented many of the prose corrections that I had made before you reverted my edit.

1. "The World Discoverer as she sits on July, 2007" - grammar and punctuation errors; should be "in July 2007"
2. "The ship carried of fleet of inflatable dinghies" - typo; should be "carried a fleet"
3. "the ship conducted cruises near the Southern Hemisphere and visited places like Antarctica, the Falkland Islands, Chile, Ushuaia, Argentina" - logical disconnect; cruises to these places arein the Southern Hemisphere, not near it.
4. "Between the months of June and August, the ship cruised around Alaskan region" - grammar; should be "around the Alaskan region"
5. "The World Discoverer was classified as a Swedish/Finnish 1A Ice class allowing the ship to withstand minor floe impacts" - logical disconnect; being classified as ice class does not allow the ship to withstand this.
6. "There are no reports of any oil, petroleum or other pollutant spills were reported as a result of the impact." - grammar errors; "There are no reports...were reported" makes no sense.
7. "when an annual maintenance work would have been completed" - grammar error; should be "when annual maintenance work"
8. "The Solomon Islands were undergoing civil war and was boarded my locals who took the equipment and other critical devices from the ship." - grammar error and typo; the sentence nonsensically says the "Solomon Islands...was boarded my locals".

These are just examples of prose issues—and there are other problems, such as MOS errors (wrong bolding in lead; improper capitalization in section headers; missing hyphens in compound measures; hyphens used instead of endashes in date ranges), wrong information in infobox fields (|Ship country= Expedition Cruise Liner), and a nonexistent category (yet Category:Shipwrecks in the Pacific Ocean exists).

I have spent an extraordinary amount of time defending the work I put into this article. I remain completely willing to answer any questions you may have about 'the rules', but it's frustrating to see that even basic grammar fixes I made haven't been implemented. I'm so sorry I didn't get to this sooner. I must admit that I do not qualify as "one not overly-familiar with video games". Not even a little bit :) Nonetheless, I've just copyedited the article. Only one issue that needs work: the first screenshot describes gameplay as third-person, but in the Reception section, another screenshot and a reviewer quote describe gameplay as first-person. My grammar skills aren't wonderful but I try my best on the other two aspects. Wrt this comment, in addition to explaining things a bit more, do you think it would be interesting to say more on worldwide differences due to culture, religion and practicalities? I should really rewrite that sentence; I've long since realized the futility of aiming for "adherence" to something as unstable and disputed as our formatting standards. I'm surprised to realize that this may be the first time we've run into each other directly—I copyedit a lot of medical articles (especially at FAC) and frequently come across your name on my watchlist. Nice to 'meet' you, in any case. I'm working on some comments for the PR now. I would be interested to see what variations result from cultural/logistical differences, if there is sufficient information available to flesh out such a section. Parkinson's Disease

Thanks for your feedback. I took your suggestion and started to develop an entry for the Parkinson's Disease Foundation.

While I agree that I may not have posted it using the proper guidelines, I do believe some of the information I posted on the Parkinson's Disease page was appropriate. I have seen other disease-related entries that reference organizations that fund research and advocate on behalf of the condition. Also, the information about finding clinical trials seemed to fit, considering the previous sections on treatment and research directions. Perhaps creating new sections the way I did was not the way to go. Do you have any suggestions for how some of this information could be included in a way that's appropriate?

It may be appropriate to include a small amount of information about PDF at the PD article. A good model would be the 'Support organizations' section of the Huntington's disease article. (If you are familiar with other PD groups, it would be great if you could provide some insight as to which should be included, too.)

I took a quick glance at Parkinson's Disease Foundation. A few comments:

• Link to the PD article in the intro sentence.
• Add some categories (see Huntington's Disease Society of America for some ideas)
• Add an infobox (see American Cancer Society for an example)

Thank you again for your feedback and direction. I incorporated your suggestions into the Parkinson's Disease Foundation page, and they certainly improved it. I also just made another attempt at editing Parkinson's Disease. As you suggested, I followed the Huntington's Disease model and created a section about Research and Support Organizations, which provides historical background and cites a number of references. I also moved information about other organizations that resided elsewhere on the page to that section.

Thanks; glad to see that he is taking the issue seriously. As regards User talk:Marskell#FAR and far away, I need to get back into the habit of doing more FAR reviews. Since it seems that you and I are the only ones doing MOS reviews with any regularity there, I wonder if we could coordinate our FAR reviews somehow. This would help me avoid my biggest timesink/distraction at FAR (poring over individual FARs to look for any MOS reviews before reading the actual articles), and might save you the same effort. But I don't do a MOS check until I see editors working on the article, trying to save it ... otherwise, they usually have bigger problems. How would we divvy that? True enough, and to be honest, I hadn't noticed that the list had gotten so short, so maybe it's no big deal nowadays. When the list and/or individual FARs get lengthy, I tend to either (a) get overwhelmed and run away to hide or (b) get so distracted reading FAR comments that I never make it to the article. In fact, those are pretty accurate descriptions of why I don't get as much done as I'd like to anywhere; time to downsize my watchlist :)

On an unrelated note: I've just discovered that a new MilHist contest, which I've known about for some time, now offers points for 'substantially' reviewing articles at FAC. And thank you very much for trying! In fact, efforts of that kind are exactly what we've had to go by, since none of us are able to view the full text. That one is particularly frustrating. :/ Usually, what I've done in working that clean up is just verify that there are enough such fragments to leave no doubt that substantial text is duplicated. (See my notes at Talk:Battle_of_Glentaisie for example). When I've done that, I've blanked the article with the {{copyvio}} in this way to give contributors a chance to rewrite. If they do, great. If not, well, the admins who close CP listings (of which I am one) have typically had to do it. :)

Zelda the writer/ Zelda the Turkey

Dear Maralia, I do not know how you can write off the bird as trivia when it has its own wikipage. Both the page and the sources (if you follow them) mention Zelda whom you call only "Fizgerald" (in the notes to your edit).

Perhaps I agree that the bird does not belong in legacy and should be placed in a new category of pop culture.

Think of how many tourists who come to NYC and pass Battery Park and are told the story of Zelda Fitzgerald in tandem with the mention of this bird. This is part of how knowledge grows through instances where correlations are made--- a wild turkey winds up lost in this park like Zelda once did or like wikipedians wind up at wikipedia and sometimes we go and sometimes we never leave. Sure, people may learn about the turkey and consequently read about ZF—this sort of learning by association is delightful. However, the same magnitude connection doesn't exist in both directions: in the context of ZF's life and works, the fact that someone might have named a bird after her some 60 years after she died, due to a coincidence in location, is IMO trivial.

Other issues contributed to my decision to revert: the source you cited (which I read in its entirety at the time) does not support your assertion because it does not mention ZF at all; a similar edit by you had been reverted by someone else as 'unsourced and dubious trivia'; the article on the turkey has been tagged for unclear notability for 6 months; this article is a featured article and has been carefully vetted for content; and your edit overwrote this article's featured article star (which is how it came to my attention in the first place).

It's a little hard to answer points raised as in-line notes, but can I assure you that "hard core" (not "hardcore" which is building rubble) is fully idiomatic in BritEng. JFK Assisnation as a Featured Article

The reason I added it as a FA is because it is a good article and has well descripted infromation, that makes it enough to become one. No, I'm afraid that isn't "enough to become one." It's unfortunate that you deleted my query at your talk page back on 13 November instead of responding at the time, because it appears from the above and this that you are still confused about how articles become featured on Wikipedia. Articles aren't simply designated as FA by any editor that feels they should be one; as noted at the top ofWP:Featured articles (the page at which you added JFK), an article must go through our Featured article candidate process, in which multiple editors review it against thefeatured article criteria. ...but another question. When is a hyphen needed in class names? Something like "Gorgon class monitors" needs one, right? No worries ... I am an English Nazi who tested out of most of his college-level English classes, and I even get it mixed up sometimes! Here are some examples:

• noun: "The seventh USS Enterprise was Yorktown class."
• adjective: "ARA General Belgrano was built just before the start of WWII as a Brooklyn-class light cruiser."

No; that would run afoul of WP:COMMONNAMES. The articles are correctly titled without a hyphen. However, almost any time you would use 'x-class shiptype' in text on Wikipedia, it should be hyphenated, per Kralizec's explanation above (as this is 'adjective-adjective noun'). Milhist task force reorganisation

I've now completed the merger of the Lebanese military history task force into the Middle Eastern military history task force. As you are listed as a coordinator of both task forces, there's little (or nothing!) you need do, other than be aware that the merger has taken place :) It's possible former Lebanese TF members may wish to create a working group under their new task force's umbrella, but this can be addressed if the situation arises. Translation project

Outfitting

How do you feel about "outfitting" vs. "fitting-out"? Both are mentioned at fitting-out; fitting-out seems more common in naval books, but sounds a little more "jargony" to my ear. Jargony, yes, but there's no substitute that would convey it precisely IMO. 'Outfitting' to me is preparation (replenishing stores, minor configuration changes to suit a particular mission, etc.), not the completion inherent in fitting out. Maralia (talk) 21:24, 30 January 2010 (UTC)

Just in case you were looking for some copyeditting to do, we seem to have wrested alcoholism from the jaws of pro-alcohol - it's in a GA review, but I'm not completely convinced yet. LiteratureGeek has put a lot of effort in recently, Arcadian also and not forgetting to mention numerous other editors inputs. I've been mostly moving sections around but whilst doing so, and with my mediocre language skills, have been fixing bits here and there. I think there are a lot of grammar / flow of sentences issues that can easily be improved upon ( with the right skills that is ;) ) that might be your thing. Hey - that's cool ... breaks and maintenance modes are part of healthy editing :) I was working on some other stuff when this turned up myself - I was appaled at the alcohol related articles a while back and this article seemed the best bet to make a dent in getting them up to scratch. I am fairly happy with the structure now - the only bits I have earmarked to move are anything to do with prognosis/epidemiology into their appropriate sections ( there's an occoasional sentence here and there). Don't know if you missed it but the HD article made it to the main page featured article in Feb, this caused some excitement in the HD support community - who were quite pleased with it! - I am currently working through a couple of books I was sent to expand the history section... so thanks on everyones behalf for your help getting it where it is :) --Lee∴V (talk •contribs) 22:11, 25 April 2010 (UTC)

With regard to Robert Halpin Captaining the Great Eastern

I believe that the article on Robert Halpin needs to be corrected. He took the captaincy of the Great Eastern in 1869, after the Atlantic Cables were laid. Several articles on web sites around confirm that he went on to lay many cables internationally, which in itself is a great achievement. My interest in this is spurred by the fact that James Anderson is a distant relative, and it is a point of family pride that he captained the Great Eastern during the Atlantic cable-laying endeavours.

At the time the Atlantic cables were laid, James Anderson was the captain, and Halpin was his first officer. It is even reported that Halpin's navigational abilities were integral to the success of these ventures, particularly when, having laid the successful 1866 cable, they returned to the site where the 1865 attempt had been severed, and grappled it up to the surface, thus providing the second functioning link.

Regrettably, it seems that the external links on the Robert Halpin page seem to have expired, and the home site that they link to seems to have no content relating to him.

March 2011 GAN backlog elimination drive a week away

WikiProject Good Articles will be running a GAN backlog elimination drive for the entire month of March. The goal of this drive is to bring the number of outstanding Good Article nominations down to below 50. This will help editors in restoring confidence to the GAN process as well as actively improving, polishing, and rewarding good content. Special requests: This section includes special requests from the NARA staff: Archival Recovery Team The National Archives' Archival Recovery Team (ART) is a team of law enforcement agents and archivists who investigate NARA's lost and stolen documents. It is hoped that making more information about the group available on Wikipedia will increase public awareness of the documents they are seeking to recover. Ongoing Today's Document challenge The Today's Document challenge is an opportunity for Wikipedians to get their work related to National Archives holdings spotlighted on Archives.gov and the National Archives' tumblr. Each day the National Archives selects a document related to the day's date to showcase. The goal is to get articles related to the selected documents on the main page in ""Did You Know...?" the same day that the National Archives features the document. Alternatively, other appropriate articles related to National Archives holdings not already selected will be used for new documents of the day by NARA staff and posted to their tumblr. Wikisource WP:NARA has a sister WikiProject on Wikisource, WS:NARA. On Wikisource, editors transcribe, proofread, and arrange documents. Inclusion in the online catalog We are currently working on a system for including links to pages on Wikimedia projects in the National Archives online catalog. The Wikimedia projects are hosting an increasing number of transcriptions of National Archives documents and high-quality image and video files that are not available through NARA's own site. Links to these Wikimedia pages in the documents' actual catalog records will benefit the end user by providing them access to further resources about the documents, and they will also demonstrate the National Archives commitment to supporting Wikimedians' efforts. National Archives ExtravaSCANza

You are invited to the National Archives ExtravaSCANza, taking place every day next week from January 4–7, Wednesday to Saturday, in College Park, Maryland (Washington, DC metro area). Come help me cap off my stint as Wikipedian in Residence at the National Archives with one last success! This will be a casual working event in which Wikipedians are getting together to scan interesting documents at the National Archives related to a different theme each day—currently: spaceflight, women's suffrage, Chile, and battleships—for use on Wikipedia/Wikimedia Commons. The event is being held on multiple days, and in the evenings and weekend, so that as many locals and out-of-towners from nearby regions1 as possible can come. Please join us! You've been cited

The Spurgeon Series 1855 & 1856: Unabridged Sermons In Modern Language cites a userspace page you started, http://en.wikipedia.org/User:Maralia/SS_Arctic ,rather than the article space article on theSS Arctic. I discovered this when I was reviewing the deletion of the article on the SS Vesta.

Incidentally, I requested a deletion review on the SS Vesta.

I saw the ships userbox on your user page. Perhaps you have an opinion on how much weight should be given to the essay WP:Notability (vehicles) in discussions over deleting articles on ships?

The essay argues we should only have articles on exceptional individual "vehicles", and that, usually, anything meaningful should go in the article on the vehicle's class.

I can see some sense behind applying the advice in this essay to cars, trucks, bicycles, carts, trains -- even airplanes. But it seems to me bo be both contrary to our usual practice with ship, and contrary to what makes sense.

Fighter aircraft and airliners can be as expensive as ships, or even more expensive. But they are also more standardized than ships, and they undertake different kinds of missions. Fighters almost always fly in squadrons with identical fighters. Airliners share routes with identical airliners. Whereas naval vessels, coast guard vessels, fishery and environmental patrol vessels, tramp freighters, and many other kinds of ships normally proceed alone, on open ended voyages, that may not be repeated.

Do you think it would make sense to change that essay so it explicitly excludes ships from its advice?

Good grief! It's bad enough to cite Wikipedia in the first place, but citing a subpage in my userspace?! Astonishing.

I would not choose to argue the deletion of SS Vesta; if I recall correctly, it was a nondescript merchant ship routinely used to carry men and supplies to a far-flung fishing station. While it did gain a certain notoriety as a result of the Arctic incident, a redirect is surely sufficient.

As to the question of ship notability in general, I'm afraid I have been out of the loop, wiki-wise, for too long to have much to contribute to the conversation. For what it's worth, in 2007–2008 I revamped the WP:SHIPS project page and created Wikipedia:WikiProject Ships/sidebar, which was intended to list all relevant guidance. The notability essay you mention is not listed therein, nor do I recall ever being aware of its existence. That being said, however, I find the requirements listed in Wikipedia:Notability (vehicles)#"Individual vehicles" to be quite reasonable. (The scare quotes in that essay, though, are inexcusable.)

Thanks for letting me know about Vesta, and about the cite. I really must get off my duff and rewrite Arctic someday. It's a sensational story.
