Backstage at the Smithsonian Libraries

Backstage at the Smithsonian Libraries is part of Wikipedia Loves Libraries 2012, the second annual continent-wide campaign to bring Wikipedia and libraries together with on-site events. Running this fall through October and November, libraries (and archives) will open their doors to help build a lasting relationship with their local Wikipedian community.

Organized by Wikimedia DC, this event will take place on October 12, 2012, and will include new editor training, a "backstage pass" tour of the National Museum of Natural History, and an edit-a-thon. Everyone is welcome to attend!

Ah, did you catch me dropping cites onto Washington? I've been working on HMT Bedfordshire, so I have a stack of Very Large Books about WWII. Felt like I should share instead of just working on my pet article, so I picked Washington at random and cited a few facts. Dunno what you're working on at the moment, but I have the bottom 3 books listedhere and am desperate for a break from Hubble Space Telescope willing to do lookups if you have a WWII ship article in the works. Yes I did! I'm (slowly) working on User:The ed17/Sandbox/Pennsylvania class battleship, but I'm also editing the Signpost now, so my writing time is limited. You may be interested in seeing South American dreadnought race, though. Is there anything from Rohwer about the actions of South American ships during the war? Rohwer is a bitch: the detail is amazing, but it's strictly chronological. It's best suited for finding actions on a specific date, or for a specific ship (via the ship index); there's really no way to look up actions across a theatre.

None of the 8 ships in your table is listed in the ship name index. I looked up South American ships I found in our WWII categories, and managed to find mentions of the following:

Brazilian survey ship Rio Branco, corvettes Carioca and Caravelas (p. 193)

Argentine destroyer Corrientes & Argentine cruiser Almirante Brown (p. 90)

Brazilian destroyers Marcilio Dias, Mariz e Barros and Greenhalgh (p. 278)

Brazilian transport Vital de Oliveira and sub-chaser Javari (p. 278)

Let me know if any of those are of interest. There may well be more, but I'll need ship names to find them.

Dromedary FAC

Hi Maralia! You left comments on the Dromedary FAC page, and you are right that who wrote it is not a native English speaker. But from these comments it seems the article should step down from FAC and receive a copyedit first, perhaps I could retry later. My advice, as someone who has been pretty heavily involved in FAC, is that it would be wise to withdraw the nomination and focus on getting a good copyedit or two. You want FAC reviewers to be able to focus on the content, sourcing, and presentation of the article; right now, the prose issues are a distraction. You can choose to leave the FAC open, but I don't think the reviews you get will be very helpful.

Thanks! I finally planted our front flowerbed this year, and it was lovely if I do say so myself, but I rather neglected it from July onwards after I found out the hard way that I am now allergic to bees, the little bastards. I went to a wiki event last month (couldn't resist the chance to get into a rare book library at the Smithsonian) and have been puttering around here ever since. Have been concentrating on expanding a pet article, cleaning up articles I worked on back in the day, reviewing some FACs, and handling some of the FAC maintenance stuff I used to do for you (finding incomplete noms, withdrawals, etc). I just spent a brief few hours scanning the horizon, find medical articles still getting badly hit by poor student editing futhered by Foundation Education Projects (trying to keep medical articles clean made my editing time here unbearable, along with the Merry Band of Socks who tried a power play at FAC), and after glancing at a few FACs, I can see that as always, our delegates could use some experienced reviewers like yourself on board ! I'm sure they appreciate the routine maintenance stuff-- there's never been more than a small handful of editors (like you, DaBomb87 for example) who saw the work needed, and dug in to help wherever they could, and didn't mind doing the tedious stuff. I chuckle when I realize that most current editors have no idea of what Gimme, you and I did on talk pages-- something they now take for granted. I may have to ignore the entire medicine realm if classes keep hitting medical articles with bad edits, which we are hardpressed to clean up because the students have staff backing. Priyanka Chopra FA

I don't understand something. You removed the nomination from the talk page but there still exist two articles: Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Priyanka Chopra/archive1 andWikipedia:Featured article candidates/Priyanka Chopra/archive2. Can you get rid of those also. I do not think it is ready for FA because: It just passed GA, it has some comments for improvements on the talk page, it is a target for vandalism, I need to find out more about the FA process first. Hi. I was trying to give Green Parakeet some time to respond to me and to talk with you and other significant contributors. As he hasn't responded, I tagged the /archive2 page for deletion just now. I will take care of the other one as well.

Regarding a future FAC for this article, I would not be concerned about vandalism as long as it's not the target of constant edit-warring. There are two things that I definitely recommend before FAC, though:

1. You should review the sources used and make sure you're confident they meet WP:RS. We don't have a lot of Indian actress FAs, so most reviewers are likely to be unfamiliar with the sources, and this will likely be brought up at FAC for confirmation.

I have been cleaning up the sources, and wikilinking them to show that they are notable and reliable. There are a few that I still need to replace. Anything else I can do on that front?BollyJeff | talk 05:46, 28 November 2012 (UTC)

I'm glad you are reviewing the sources. Wikilinking them only shows that they have a Wikipedia page, though, which at best means that they are notable; it doesn't speak to their reliability either way. I would suggest starting with a list of sources used, and reviewing them one by one to make sure no tabloids etc. have slipped in. (If you look at the FAC for Preity Zinta, for example, you will see what I am trying to avoid with proper preparation.) 2. You should have the article copyedited, perhaps through WP:GOCE. This is important for a couple of reasons: it's hard to catch errors in your own writing or in something you've read hundreds of times; and also there are some portions of the article that read as though they were written by a non-native speaker.

Hi Maralia,

Thank you for archiving the She Has a Name FAC for me. I nominated 2012 tour of She Has a Name for FAC today, and was informed by SandyGeorgia that I am not eligible to do so for another two weeks. If I have misunderstood the guidelines on this issue, would you be willing to withdraw my new nomination or tell me how to do so myself?

Oh, yes that does mean a two-week wait after an archived nomination. Sometimes the delegates waive that period; if you feel strongly about it you can ask at WT:FAC. I've taken care of stopping the FAC for now. Because no actual review happened this time, we don't need to keep a record of it, so I've removed the {{FAC}} template from the article talk page and it is okay to overwrite the same nomination page when the time comes to re-nominate the article. Wikimedia DC Holiday Party and Wiki Loves Monuments Exhibition

Please join Wikimedia DC and four other local media nonprofits—the National Press Club's Young Members Committee, 100Reporters, IRE and the Fund for Investigative Journalism—in winding down another year with a night of well-mannered frivolity.

The festivities will take place on Friday evening from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM in the Zenger Room on the 13th Floor of the National Press Club, located on 529 14th Street NW, near Metro Center. There will be meat and vegetarian appetizers as well as a cash bar with specially reduced drink prices all night long.
