November copy edit drive

 The Wikipedia Guild of Copy-Editors invites you to participate in the November 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive, a month-long effort to reduce the backlog of articles that require copy-editing. The drive will begin on 1 November at 00:00 (UTC) and will end on 30 November at 23:59 (UTC). The goal for this drive is to reduce the backlog by 10% (approximately 500 articles). Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive!
We have reached the midway point in our backlog elimination drive, so here is an update. Participation report — The November drive has 53 participants at this point. We had 77 participants in the September drive. In July, 95 people signed up for the drive, and in May we had 36. If you are not participating, it is not too late to join! Progress report — The drive is quite successful so far, as we have already almost reached our target of a 10% reduction in the number of articles in the backlog. We are doing very well at keeping our Requests page clear, as those articles count double for word count for this drive. Please keep in mind the possibility of removing other tags when you are finished with an article. If the article no longer needs {{cleanup}}, {{wikify}}, or other similar maintenance tags, please remove them, as this will make the tasks of other WikiProjects easier to complete. The last time I hit preview, the AfD was still open, then I hit save and... well it was closed for redirect. I rewrote the article and included references, I did not mean to undo the nom, but at this point would like to see what you think of the information I added. - I can correct the touring information, it may be extraneous. The fact that they tour locally is of no importance, we cannot gage their notability based on where they tour, but let me try to find a source that says they play locally. I understand the Ramones/Misfits garner a lot of comparison with any modern punk act, but someone has said it and I'm not going to delegate whether or not that is a substantial or meaningful claim. It's not our job to decide whether or not the band is relying on a gimmick or their level of musicianship. To be blunt, they have received coverage in reliable sources and that's all we can know. We can't make any judgement or assertions on why the band is getting press, simply that they are. They have been covered in multiple, independent, reliable sources, and therefore meet our notability criteria. - Theornamentalist (talk) 12:58, 15 November 2010 (UTC)
- I understand where you're coming from, but it is coverage, and I don't think we're supposed to (ourselves) determine just why something is notable, as in the idea that it is only so because of inheritance. We just basically copy what is already out there as long as it meets our criteria for inclusion. Ha yeah, I thought Shane Morton was some big popular dude, cos virtually every source says so and I even considered making an article for him in order to support the idea of two notable persons (although Dumas isn't for being a musician), but everything about him stops after a sentence or two. I did find that the current drummer Racci Shay has played in Dope among other bands, which helps.
- Regarding taking Dumas out of the equation, I was going to suggest the same thing. If I found all these sources for the band, I believe it would meet the requirements for an article, but since you've suggested that, I doubt I'll be proving a point with that now. - Theornamentalist (talk) 22:22, 15 November 2010 (UTC)
- I think that if she was not in the band, and it wasn't assumed that we were only keeping the article in Wikipedia because she is in it as some form of inheritance, yet it received the same amount of coverage, I would certainly keep it. Change her name to Jane Doe in the album article, remove any mentions of wrestling (which is minimal) and what are you left with? (if I might say so myself ha) A well sourced article that fully meets our criteria for inclusion.

Looking for Wikipedia Ambassadors
[edit]Hi! I'm leaving you this message because you are listed as a Wikipedian associated with Harvard. The Wikipedia Ambassador Program is currently looking for Campus Ambassadors to help with Wikipedia assignments at schools in Boston and Cambridge (including Harvard), which will be participating in the Public Policy Initiative for the Spring 2011 semester. The role of Campus Ambassadors will be to provide face-to-face training and support for students on Wikipedia-related skills (how to edit articles, how to add references, etc.). This includes doing in-class presentations, running workshops and labs, possibly holding office hours, and in general providing in-person mentorship for students.
Prior Wikipedia skills are not required for the role, as training will be provided for all Campus Ambassadors (although, of course, being an experienced editor is a plus).
If you live near Boston and you are interested in being a Wikipedia Campus Ambassador, or know someone else from the area who might be, please email me or leave a message on my talk page.
If you're an experienced and active Wikipedian, you might be interested alternatively in becoming an Online Ambassador. The role of Online Ambassadors is to serve as mentors for students; it doesn't require any in-person outreach. Take a look at the Online Ambassador guidelines; the "mentorship process" describes roughly what will be expected of mentors in the coming term. If that's something you want to do, please apply!
You can find instructions for applying at WP:ONLINE. The main things we're looking for in Online Ambassadors are friendliness, regular activity (since mentorship is a commitment that spans several months), and the ability to give detailed, substantive feedback on articles (both short new articles, and longer, more mature ones).

Richard Tyson
[edit]Sir; Why did you say 'not good enough' to my citation for Richard Tyson on List of Freemasons from earlier today? It's a VIDEO on a publically accessable web page in which the person in question says "I'm a Shriner" and goes on to be a host of sorts of the video. A man MUST be a Freemason prior to joining the Shriners. I challenge you to find a better citiation for Richard Tyson being a Freemason. In the meantime I will look for more. - On my talk page you said "A video is not a good source because, as you noted, one must go through the video (and be able to recognize the individual), so it isn't a matter of simply looking at the reference and having the answer immediately."
- I disagree. If the cite includes at what time point in the video the person in question appears you don't have to "go through the video" and if at that point the person's name appears right under their face you don't have to "be able to recognize the individual." I would also argue that an online video is a better cite than a cite to a book, especially one that is out of print, since you can't "simply look(ing) at the reference and having the answer immediately-- Eric Cable | Talk 14:55, 25 January 2011 (UTC)

GOCE drive news

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 Backlog elimination drive! The drive is halfway over, so here are some mid-drive stats. 
 So far, 43 people have signed up for this drive. Of these, 25 have participated. If you signed up for the drive but haven't participated yet, it's not too late! Try to copy edit at least a few articles. Remember, if you have rollover words from the last drive, you will lose them if you do not participate in this drive. If you haven't signed up for the drive yet, you can sign up now.
We have eliminated two months from the backlog – January and February 2009. One of our goals is to eliminate as many months as possible from the 2009 backlog. Please help us reduce the size of this part of the backlog if you haven't already. Another goal is to reduce the entire backlog by 10%, or by 515 articles. Currently, we have eliminated 375 articles from the queue, so if each participant copy edits four more articles, we will reach that goal. Thank you for participating in the January 2011 drive. Prod of Skin (Japanese band)
[edit]Hi MSJapan,
I removed the prod tag you placed on Skin (Japanese band). The guidelines at Wikipedia:Notability (music) suggest that musical ensembles containing multiple notable members are usually notable. Furthermore, the article implies that interest in the group has continued since their one performance, with the group members still being asked about the project in more recent interviews, which to me suggests that the group is notable. While the group only preformed once, I don't think having only one performance matters as far as Wikipedia notability guidelines are concerned. [edit]Hi MSJapan. A disability is something that can affect your day-to-day life. As someone who has Crohns (and missing a large part of my intestine), I can say that having CD is a disability, as it can affect what you do, each day to the next. [edit]Yes, I know where the 1733 number comes from. My understanding is that the dates given in the list are the year of formation as an independent Grand Lodge. So the list does not count colonial era predecessors, which were subservient to the various Grand Lodges back in the UK. This is true for all the Provincial Grand Lodges not just MA. - Doing some research, all that I can find about this band is from the record company, with a couple secondary sources (enough for a sourced article, but not a very large one). Also, I mis-labeled my undeletion request, rather than a major label, Prosthetic is a indie label. Since this is their only claim to notability, should the matter of Prosthetic being a "more important indie label (i.e. an independent label with a history of more than a few years, and with a roster of performers, many of whom are notable)" go to a project page for others to discuss? GOCE drive invitation

The latest GOCE backlog elimination drive is under way! It began on 1 July and so far 18 people have signed up to help us reduce the number of articles in need of copyediting. The first is about Serbians and the second about non-Serbians. Failing to allow nominations for delete to go through the process
[edit]On July 30 I went through the entire category of 'Persons who have made a Contribution to Freemasonry' [[1]] and found a handful of them lacking notability and references reliable sources. You thinking it was retalitory on my part for whatever reason then prejudicially undid each of my edits; thereby failing to let them go through the process of allowing other editors to check them for their merit. Mark Hatfield
[edit]The PoliticalGraveyard website, despite its name, does not just do bios of living people. For example, I am personally acquainted with a congressional candidate listed on the site who is very much alive.
As far as the lodge reference, I give a mea culpa (just trying to be bold), since I know the lodge only because it is generally known among freemasons in the area.
I have been trying to find more references, but it seems that it is becoming more difficult to find references to a person's membership. For example, Hatfield's autobiography menetions his DeMolay membership, but nothing about his Lodge membership. I believe he is a Shriner as well, by the way, having seen his photo in a fez at the Oregon Shrine center in Wilsonville.
Any help with citations would be appreciated. I believe he is notable enough to be included in this list.PhilD86 (talk) 00:35, 10 August 2011 (UTC)

Also about your other subjective edit - If you were to take the time to search for "Honorary Alumni Humane Letters" this is the type of link you would find (https://www.vts.edu/ftpimages/95/misc/misc_95974.pdf) and there are hundreds of them. People who went to unversities who gave away these degrees know that honorary alumni are treated by the university the same as actual alumni and this wiki category has no distinction between.--Yosesphdaviyd (talk) 00:51, 20 August 2011 (UTC)

Request for translation
[edit]Hi MSJ, I saw your name on the list of translators from Japanese to English and I have a request to make of you. It could be quite challenging. Could you possibly translate the text from Hokusai's 1820 erotic woodcut The Dream of the Fisherman's Wife, at File:Tako to ama retouched.jpg? It is already transcribed, but the transcription may need a double check. It may feature old slang and terms with different connotations than modern Japanese. Thanks in advance. Extermination of Evil has five images that have text that could theoretically be translated, but the paintings are from the 12th century so I doubt many people can understand them. However, please read the speedy criterion: it only permits the deletion of pages that don't explain why their subjects are important. Importance and notability are very different things, and it's quite possible for an article to make a reasonable claim that its subject is important without being able to prove notability. Translation request of interview of Yuji Horii
[edit]I've tried asking around several people to no avail so far. I found you from the list of Japanese-English translators.
If/when possible, could you translateInterview by Japan's Media Arts Festival. Unfortunatly, their English page does not contain a translation. :( This appears to be one of the better resources out their too.
I got the jist of the first 2 sections being background info on Horii, but the kanji is beyond me for most of that article. I'd like to use this to improve his article, and bring Dragon Warrior and Dragon Quest to FA level. If it's too much for to translate the whole article, concentrate on the stuff about Dragon Quest. Take a look at the above list article and its talk page. Several issues... WP:NOTDIRECTORY comes immediately to mind. Your edits preserve copy that is irrelevant and poorly worded. The whole article is confused and garbled. The first sentence alone "The fraternity of Freemasonry, also known as "Free and Accepted Masons," is organized by private groups of members variously known in English as lodges, chapters, councils, commanderies, consistories, etc., which can be collectively referred to as Masonic bodies." Logically creates the idea that some Freemasons meet in lodges, some in chapters, some in councils, and some in commanderies, etc. But these named entities are not equivalnet. It is not the case that some Master Masons meet in a lodge while other Master Masons meet in a consistory. This kind of confusion is continued throughout the article.
I corrected those problems. I did get rid of references to subjects that had nothing to do with the subject of the article. The account of the origin of the Royal Arch degree is completely out of place here. That has the most marginal connection to what "Masonic Bodies" are. Then the paragraph launches into a *subjective* apology for why the master mason degree is really the highest, even though it's degree number 3 and there are systems that go to 92. You may think there's an explanation for this, but the article is garbage. And certainly a discussion of the relative merits of degrees has nothing to do with what a Masonic appendant body is.
But I'm not going to fight you on this. You can keep things vague, confused, a morass of ideas that are inexplicable. I don't care if the article is crap. I also know that you're already planning to have me blocked and run to an admin.
But I win. You have an article that is awful. It's gibberish. And I can have the satisfaction of knowing that lunk-headed Freemasons have crappy wikipedia pages because they play wikipedia power games rather than write well. And I have other things to do. The old article intro is vaguely about the nature of degrees in Freemasonry. That's not what the article is supposed to be about. The article claims to describe what Masonic bodies are. That's a different subject. The intro is it stands is not about masonic bodies, it's a badly written description of degrees.

REGARDLESS, why did you violate wikipedia policy and revert edit instead of making corrections? Why are you above wikipedia policy? Why are you allowed an overbearing hand? Shouldn't I report you for being a hostile wikipedia editor?

I am one of those annoying...

I am a PM from Australia and just created this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Melbournemason/sandbox with the view of putting it on wikipedia... I can write other such articles... but thought I would make a start with the building I was initiated in...
I was tempted to post a request for help/review in the Freemasonry talk page, but it seems that is not the go.. . but thought I would give you a shot.. I have no idea why the contents box is at the top.. annoying.. but I have been working on learning a bit but cant work that element of the page out.
