Hi LF, can you review the sources I've added to Talk:One Laptop per Child and make updates as appropriate? I'm pretty sure the other numbers being used on the page are just confirmations of purchase quantities, not confirmations of deployment success (it's much harder to count children who have laptops than it is to count machines that have made it through customs) -- in which case the new work in Peru, Argentina, and Gaza are all good to include There are also a bunch of less high-profile projects in Latin America, but these were easiest to find reliable int'l news sources for.

Hi, you just closed Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Log/2010_December_12#Abid_Raza and i have some questions.

Afd's should run for at least 7 days. I think that time was not over yet. Why did you close the debate so early? Secondly could you please explain why you closed the debate as Keep. Given the arguments in the debate based on our policies the result should be Delete. So i would be interested to know how you came to your decision. I think many wrongs does not make a right. You may have another look - the debate was started on 13th December and a debate should run for at least 7 days.

I disagree with this the analysis of the arguments indicates a delete. Could you please name the arguments that you analysed?

Yes i am thinking of going to DRV as the debate was closed to early and so far i disagree so far with your closure based on the information you gave to me. I just want to clear some more question with you to possible avoid this.
So the answer to my question about the analysed arguments is that you think DGG's rational would support a keep. Correct me if i am wrong.

I am disapionted that you have not got back to me yet all though you where so hasty getting ride of the page that I set up under the name (Samuel Zealey). You litrally got ride of the page within an hour of me putting it up but have not yet responded to my question nor have you showed any attempted in helping me.

I would like you to respond to so I can sort out the matter in hand. I would like to be able to make this page apart of the wikipedia web site and understand now that the page was deleted because of having no links of the artists achievements, I have now list a few of Samuel Zealey's achievements below.

Its sourced, its not pinched off anyone, nor was it attacking anyone...please help + guide me to do what is required to keep that piece of information in the public domain. please tell me why it was deleted, and what it needs to have it done to it, to be un-deleted.

Deletion of Bill McGarry page

Hi,

I used to be "Bill McGarry (Internet Activist)" but now I am "Bill McGarry (Deleted)" or "Bill McGarry (NOT the football coach!)" or just plain old "Bill McGarry" <grin>.

I received emails (well, 2 emails) from Down-Syn (Down Syndrome) Listserv readers that my page in Wikipedia was no longer there. I followed up on this and saw that the page was removed due to no sources listed and due to no Google search references found.

I would like to get this page put back into Wikipedia if possible. I give the Wikipedia URL to readers who want to know my background and history. Also, there are researchers, students (including post-grads), etc who use the Down-Syn mailing list and the 17 years of archives for their thesis, project, research article, etc and use the Wikipedia URL as a reference.

I have had some magazine articles and newspaper articles written about my work which I can dig up and there are references on the Internet as well. Now, as far as the "no Google search references found" -- The problem here is the "Internet Activist" title which is not a good way to describe my work. If you search for "Bill McGarry" with disability or handicap, then I should pop up in various places. When I first started, the term "handicap" was the word used but over the years, the word "disability" or "disabled" are now considered the politically correct terms to use. Try Googling:

   "bill mcgarry" handicap OR disability OR disabled -wikipedia -advocate

Note that this rejects any findings with the word "advocate". Many sites use Wikipedia material but do NOT give credit to Wikipedia so the "-advocate" should eliminate every wikiscraper (and maybe some non-wiki finds but that's okay.) You should find material dating as far back as 20 years ago. Google reported about 700 hits with these search terms; of course, some of those are duplicates and some are of other people but a lot of these are me. Search engines do not have access to the Down-Syn current articles or the 17+ years of Down-Syn archives so those will not show up.

I have sent this to the Talk pages of the other people who looked into deleting this page. I hope that this is okay.

So is it possible to get this page restored or should someone re-create it?

As the closer of the debate, I was just reflecting the consensus at that time. Looking at the links you provided, there are a number of sites which reference you and your digest, so I don't doubt the veracity of that. However, the article probably still does not meet the notability requirements for people, and none of the sites I found would qualify as reliable sources. If possible please explain to me why the page was deleted, along with it's member teams:

While I'm aware that you may not have been involved in the deletion of all of the aforementioned pages, I know that you were involved in the deletion of the page mentioned in the Subject of this topic. I did read in the discussion for deletion that USER: Paul McDonald stated in the process that because it's AMATEUR in nature that it's unworthy of 'being listed in this encyclopedia'. I won't be as condescending as he was and spell out the definition of encyclopedia, I will however make the case as to why this league and it's member teams are documentable entities. The Mid-States Football League (MSFL) has been in existence for 13 years that has produced four (4) Minor League Football News (MLFN) National Championships. Eight of the fourteen teams have been in existence for the better part of a decade and have established themselves within the community. There have been numerous articles written about these member teams, however if we were made aware that external sources were needed to maintain the wiki pages...these external links would have been submitted. There have been numerous radio and webcast broadcasts for this league and in fact, this league established it's own radio show in 2010. Please let me know, what needs to be done to restore the aforementioned pages, as the MSFL and it's member teams are in fact known nationally as well as well entrenched in their local markets. Digger deletion

Could you explain why the article wasn't merged rather than deleted? In general if there is an article where the material would fit, we merge to that article unless there is an UNDUE problem. Hi LFaraone, I echo Hobit's question. I was surprised not to see a simple merge and redirect result. I was about to start a WP:Deletion review but since that page starts with "Deletion Review is to be used where someone is unable to resolve the issue in discussion with the administrator" I realised I should bring it up with the closing admin first. Did I not have a merge proposal on Talk:Digger (webcomic) for a merge? There is my so far unchallenged proposal on Talk:Ursula_Vernon#merge. Wikimania 2012 bid, DC chapter & next meetup!

  1. At WikiXDC in January, User:Harej proposed that DC submit a bid to host Wikimania 2012. A bid and organizing committee is being formed and seeks additional volunteers to help. Please look at our bid page and sign up if you want to help out. You can also signup for the bid team's email list.
  2. To support the Wikimania bid, more events like WikiXDC, and outreach activities like collaborations with the Smithsonian (ongoing) and National Archives, there also has been discussion of forming Wikimedia DC, as an official Wikimedia chapter. You can express interest and contribute to chapter discussions on the Wikimedia DC Meta-Wiki pages.
  3. To discuss all this and meet up with special guest, Dutch Wikipedian User:Kim Bruning, there will be a meetup, Wikipedia:Meetup/DC 16 this Tuesday at 7pm, at Capitol City Brewery, Metro Center. There will be a pre-meetup Wikimania team meeting at 6pm at the same location.

DC Meetup: May 7 @ Tenleytown Library

Dear LFaraone, we assume that you deleted the article by mistake and ask wikipedia kindly to uppload it again ASAP! I could not identify any substantial reason for deleting the article. Especially after the article had been approved twice by NawlinWiki and User:Syrthiss. Dear LFarone, I do know IMP³rove and use it. IMP³rove is a program to "Improve the Innovation Management Performance of Small and Medium Entrerprises (SME) with sustaining impact". It's been developed by a consortium initiated and funded by the European Commission. As one part of the project a tool has been developed to allow SME to compare their innovation management capabilities to others on an anonymous base, allowing them to improve their innovation management capability. So it is directly related to article about Innovation_management, Peter Drucker, etc. Unfortunately are some of the people who could contribute to the article busy with working with this set of methods and tools. Re: WP:CORP That there is a notable organization in the background can be seen if you visit the [Innova Homepage of the European Commission].

That's nice. I use it isn't really an argument that's useful in a deletion discussion. The article was deleted as a result of a deletion discussion; among other thigns it lacked third party sources independent from the organisation which created it, thus not meeting the general notability guideline or the product notability guidelines. No. The consensus is that the consensus reached at AfD is safe until it changes. And how do we determine when it changes? Another AfD. There is no set duration for how long the consensus lasts. This is why we have idiocy like {{GNAA History}}.
I'm surprised nobody has taken this to DRV already. It's a good, uncontroversial close, and hopefully OTRS will no longer be deluged with spam. The change.org petition led to an e-mail being sent to OTRS with every signature, and that led to us developing a pre-canned response. Tom, let me start from the beginning to clarify on the Change.org petition. I'll try to make it as brief as possible- I looked up Ben Breedlove after seeing his video via a link from yahoo news. I came to Wikipedia because it was listed when I searched Ben. I saw the deletion warning and couldn't understand why it was there. I searched through the Wikipedia sight for hours, looking up deletion process and for a way to contact Wikipedia, to even send an email to anyone. The only place that had an email address was in job openings. I was strongly compelled to voice an opinion that this page needed to stay.
I went to Change.org and started a petition, my first to ever start. Throughout that petition, I was careful to state these facts-- 1. Sign if you agree that the Article falls within Wikipedia's guidelines; 2. Go to Wikipedia to see the discussion page if any questions; and 3. All places that I asked for help, I did state that the petition would not directly affect the decision- I said that it would help to show how relevant Ben is.
I stumbled across the deletion discussion page, but had no idea how to enter it or what to do. I figured out how to put an opinion there, and it did say that public opinion was welcome but would have no direct impact on the decision. After seeing what I thought were bad reasons for deletion, I created an account...I did not want to be anonymous. The hours and days of looking up Policy (When you are on one page, there are tens of links to other pages) made me learn more about Wikipedia itself and what it was. I interpreted policies the best that I could. When it was brought up on the discussion page that my petition was thought to be skewing things, I immediately stopped seeking out support for it. I also claimed on the discussion page that I had started the petition, was open and honest about it.
Wikipedia has been one of the most difficult things in my life to learn about. I don't believe that anyone can be proficient here in only a few days. While here I realized I wanted to be involved in this, really liked the thought of contributing and helping in some small way if I could learn HOW.
As far as the emails sent to Wikipedia of every signature, I did not realize that. I had tried to turn in the petition as a whole thing on Friday by guessing at email addresses to contact, and got lucky on one. I received a form response, and guessed at another address where I did recieve a reply saying that they were aware of the petition and did not need me to hand it in. Really, if you think about it, it could just as easily have been emails sent by individuals (outside of a petition) voicing their opinion on the article being deleted, and I bet there were many of those.
To sum it up- I, as one individual, did all that I could to try and stop an article from being deleted. I felt that strongly. And I believe that the correct thing was done in keeping it. Every day there are hundreds of thousands uploading his final video (9,816,530 to date) and every hour there are still thousands of messages being left in hundreds of places that he has changed their life. There are still 1,700,000 plus results when doing a search. Yes, many messages being left are from teenagers. But today's teenager is the next generation of Wikipedia Editor. And today's teenager needs all the inspiration they can get in a world full of immediate, ongoing, horrific and frightening news as well as online incivility. I respect that you think it is a fad, but I personally don't see it as that right now and I don't believe the extent of the media coverage, both then and still, would have happened if it was a fad. I also hope it isn't looked back on as one. But time will tell, and I'm grateful that this article has been given time. Sometimes, an event really does have an ongoing significant impact on society.
So that is my story of how I got here and the petition. I hope I am able to stay here and contribute to Wikipedia, as I find the concept amazing and feel I have something to give.Petersontinam (talk) 23:24, 8 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I have come on the same errand. Please reconsider your close of this AfD.
  • The only person arguing for keep was the article author. At different times he used the signatures (unsigned) "Aliberti", "Frankie" and "Frank", but if you click on those you will see that they are all user Aliberti (talk). He was tinkering with his signature - not with intent to deceive, I'm sure, but it does give a misleading impression of multiple support.
  • His keep arguments are really no more than ILIKEIT and OTHERSTUFF, plus a wish that WP should be "a detailed database of published books", whereas Blanchardb and I both cited the relevant notability guideline, WP:NBOOK, and Blanchardb explained it at some length.
I think the AfD should have been closed as delete; alternatively, please re-list it, when I will add a note for the next closer to point out that all the keep voices are the same person. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 22:49, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Inre AfD John Kerry VVAW Controversy

First, thank you for your recent attention to the AfD petition. It is a contentious subject and likely to remain so for the foreseeable future. As to your determination...

I believe I may have personally made a good faith error of fact as to the genesis of the original article. After a review of the talk page archives, while, IMHO, content that might be perceived as critical of Kerry and exculpatory or positive for the Swiftvets was always met with considerable opposition, I don't believe that the introduction of controversial Kerry/VVAW content may have ever reached a level of incorporation that might have inspired a fork to John Kerry VVAW controversy. Instead, that content had apparently been (though I haven't personally confirmed this) introduced and debated within the John Kerry article and the VVAW article. In light of that, I was about to strike my expressed preference of a merge specifically to Swift Boat Veterans for Truth to a simple Keep vote when I noted that you had closed the AfD.

In light of my position change and because my position was cited by other editors, I'm wondering if the AfD might be re-opened for a short period so as to accommodate my change in position...which may be influential in your AfD result determination? I simply want this all to be above board and am not very experienced in the AfD process.

So, how come when I went to "Physics major" it redirected me to "Physics education", but when I actually clicked on http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Physics_major&redirect=no it showed "Physics major ↳ Engineer"? Especially given that the history of the page shows no revision where it ever was "Physics major ↳ Engineer", and that's definitely not what the page source says either? Backstage at the Smithsonian Libraries is part of Wikipedia Loves Libraries 2012, the second annual continent-wide campaign to bring Wikipedia and libraries together with on-site events. Running this fall through October and November, libraries (and archives) will open their doors to help build a lasting relationship with their local Wikipedian community.

Wikimedia DC Holiday Party and Wiki Loves Monuments Exhibition

Please join Wikimedia DC and four other local media nonprofits—the National Press Club's Young Members Committee, 100Reporters, IRE and the Fund for Investigative Journalism—in winding down another year with a night of well-mannered frivolity.

The festivities will take place on Friday evening from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM in the Zenger Room on the 13th Floor of the National Press Club, located on 529 14th Street NW, near Metro Center. There will be meat and vegetarian appetizers as well as a cash bar with specially reduced drink prices all night long.
