Mekong River map

Seeing there was no map for the Mekong page and thinking it a cool looking river/watershed, I made a map. But just as I uploaded to the Commons, I found I was about to overwrite your Mekong watershed map. Yours looked almost exactly like mine, but seeing it was last edited over a half year ago and wasn't on the Mekong page here, I went ahead, renamed mine, and added it to the Mekong page. I think yours looks fine. Sometimes my maps get pulled off pages and I'll re-add them if they weren't replaced by something better, but sometimes I don't notice. You can always check my gallery if you want to see if I've already done one or not, at one point I did the 20 or so longest rivers that didn't already have a map. Map

Hello Karl. I have seen your map of Aral Sea waters, including Amu Darya and Syr Darya and would like to ask, if you can draw clarification. Syr Darya is created in Uzbekistan by confluence of Naryn and Kara Darya rivers, hence it doesn't flow in Kyrgyzstan as your map shows. Thank you. - Darwinek 13:47, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

Western Sahara map request

Can you be more specific in what you are looking for in a Western Sahara map? There are already two maps based on the U.N. map in commons and I've noticed that insane edit wars erupt whenever someone tries to use one of them. I thank you for your answer to my request.

A NPOV map is a map which displays only factual features. I think there is a general consensus about that, and we don't need a particular consensus for a particular map.

These 2 maps display controled zones, though the 2 opposed sides have not concluded any treaty or agreement in order to delimit these zones. More, one of these maps don't specify any date or source. I think that these maps are unusuable in any NPOV article.

The MINURSO map displays interesting factual features like oueds, lakes, localities, roads, and the berm. But, I wish a general map for Western Sahara, and I don't want the extra informations regarding the MINURSO. So, I would be glad if you could make a new map of Western Sahara, based on the MINURSO map, since it is far most precise than the current maps of Western Sahara in Commons.

Main needed changes to the MINURSO map:

• to remove the special MINURSO informations in the caption
• to remove the UN warnings and references
• to replace the map icons for localities where the MINURSO was deployed (blue names, do not confuse with geographic features)
• to change the color of locality names from blue to black ("Staging Area" is not a locality and has to be removed)
• optionally, you can also resize the height near 20° and 30° parallels.

Class I Railroad EPS files

Is there a way to get the eps files you used on your Class I Railroad map? I don't have access to GIS

Suggestions

You mentioned suggestions on your page, so I thought I'd write my little list of pages I've thought of making maps for (but won't for a long time if ever -- currently trying to focus on a for-print map that might be of commercial value!). I don't know if any of these would be fun or worthwhile, but here are some of the pages: Cross Timbers, Transylvanian Plateau, Southwest Trail, Natchez Trace, Wilderness Road, Old Wire Road, Saskatchewan River, Red River of the North, Honey Lands, and something for the various headwater tributaries of the Tennessee River (like the Clinch River, Holston River, French Broad River, Hiwassee River, etc etc). This last one I may get to someday, perhaps in the style of the Monongahela tributaries. Pfly 21:12, 9 February 2007 (UTC)

Not too bad, I've actually been to some of the upper Tennessee area so was familiar with most of them. I skipped over the Transylvanian Plateau as I think that would be better served by one of the satellite image overlay maps and haven't had a chance to go digging for imagery.Kmusser 03:19, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

Red River basin

Thanks for putting up the images! I would suggest that the Devils Lake basin have a different shade, though. And Minot should probably be on the Souris River highlight version. --AlexWCovington (talk) 03:33, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

Devil's Lake basin does have a different shade, it's tan instead of yellow, or do you mean it should get a third color? Or maybe I should label it? Republic of Kurdistan - (Mahabad) Map‎

I added the first map request and created the map on the article, but the map is not accurate. I made it in Microsoft paint so it was a guess game, the article needs a more accurate map. Another one, and an error

Neversink River. Can you make sure to show the East Branch and West Branch in Ulster County?

Moodna Creek

Small tributary of the Hudson in Orange County (I just created the article). If the map could also show, and name, three tributaries — Otter Kill, Cromline Creek and Woodbury Creek — that would be great because it could be used for articles on all three as well. Done, though my source data really starts to break down at that scale so I'm not sure it's right. Otter Kill I think is ok. Cromline Creek GNIS and the topo maps don't agree on where it is - I went with the topo and drew at as far as a confluence with a bunch of unnamed streams just NE of Chester, but I'm not sure about any of the part past Tomahawk Lake. Woodbury I drew as far as Highland Mills - it may keep going, but there's a confluence there and none of the branches were named on the topo. Kmusser 19:00, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

Wow! But you got it about right: Cromline Creek is more or less the Tomahawk Lake outlet brook, and Woodbury Creek begins at a small pond closer to Central Valley. But that's OK. It's really tight and I'm not sure who would really notice. Thanks! Daniel Case 06:16, 30 June 2007 (UTC)

Sure, I'll do one for FLL. I'm not planning on updating these every time a destination is added, that's part of why I put the date on there fairly prominantly. My thought was to update them whenever there was a major change (like an airline adding or removing the airport as a hub), or maybe revisit it in a year or so and see what's changed. Ok no problem about XNA, but keep in mind when making FLL, that Spirit has confirmed all those new destinations except CCS, so you can add them all in except that one they haven't confirmed that way there won't be a major bunch of them missing in a month when they all start up, also, Delta to SDQ, same deal. I checked around and, It's listed here [1], which is kept very well up to date. I also see it listed on the board at the commuter terminal, but I don't remember how recent that was. Actually, I just noticed that the airport lists the commuter airlines on a separate list from regular airlines... [2], so it seems they are still operating. French India Map

Hello Kmusser,

I don't mean to dig up a previously discussed point, but I do agree with the previous contributor regarding the map on the French Empire and French India articles. Although you (I presume you compiled the aesthetically pleasing maps) accurately indicate French dominions and influence on the India map, the world map mistakenly portrays areas of French influence as part of the French Empire. I'm afraid that is not supported by the map or by historical fact. After all, Hyder Ali/Tipu, the Nizam, and the Marathas were all independent rulers until their defeat/treaties with the British. Although Dupleix was an effective and cunning imperialist, I think we give him a little more credit than he is due with that map. Moreover, due to this map, the French world empire article notes that half of India was under French rule, which of course isn't true. Please let me know what your thoughts are and if the changes can be made by you or someone else. Thanks for your understanding.

Las Vegas airport map

In your map detailing non-stop flights from Las Vegas, you included Tokyo-Narita. Since Japan Airlines stopped service to Las Vegas, I'm not certain there is a carrier that flys directly to Narita. I checked the Korean Air, Phillipines Air, United, NWA, and Delta sites, and didn't see any direct flights from Las Vegas. I might have missed something, but I don't think there is non-stop service to Tokyo. ― El Cid ∴∵ 03:35, 5 May 2007 (UTC)

I'll fix it as soon as I get a chance. I got that off of the airport website - their statistics for some reason include some airports that don't actually have any direct flights - I thought I had caught all of them and deleted them before making the map, but I guess not. As an aside, your map and note on the talk page lists a few extra towns. Do you have a concrete source for these? I would like to add these towns to the Geography section, it would really help it. My main sources list either 17(though THAT source only lists towns currently in Massachusetts) or 20 (but THAT source includes towns on the Nantucket and The Vineyard, which did not become part of Massachusetts until AFTER 1791; though some of my sources kinda/sorta indicate that Plymouth residents may have settled the Islands, it is clear these were New York posessions before the 1791 Phipps reorganization of the area.) Also, omitting those 3 towns from the list of 20, the other 17 exactly match the 17 I have listed now. Also, reviewing my sources indicates that Hull was NOT part of that list (my source indicates that Hull was added to Plymouth County in 1793; and it is clearly North of the Old Colony Line, as your map indicates... good catch). Thanks. The map was based mostly on the wikipedia pages of the individual towns - the Rhode Island towns in particular though I found confirmation on their respective official web pages. Kmusser, I'm a GIS Associate from Pittsburgh, PA interested in helping make maps for Wikipedia. I like the idea of using the maps standards you have in place and I think your maps look very nice. I uploaded a couple of examples: Delaware Valley, Delaware River. Those won't do you much good without data layers though - see my sources page on where to download data, almost everything I use comes from the National Atlas layers. That river map did make use of the NHD, but that's not necessary for most rivers. Kmusser 15:12, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

Could you make a map of all the non-stop destinations from the Region of Waterloo International Airport? It's a small airport so it shouldn't be that hard to make a map of. Meramac, Maramec, Meramec, Marrimack, ...

Thanks for the much improved map of Missouri rivers! You might want to upload a newer version, though. Just this weekend I was having a conversation about the many spellings of "Meramec" in various locales around the country. In Missouri the river is named Meramec, not "Meramac" as you have it. The confusion is certainly understandable. The largest spring to feed the river is even spelled differently: Maramec. --Kbh3^rdtalk 18:52, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

Fort Lauderdale Airport map

Hello. Georgia (U.S.) County maps

Howdy, Kmusser! Astrokey 44 referred me to you. Here's the question I laid out for him:

As for US County maps, all I'm really looking for is an outline map, preferably with rivers, and maybe with the county seat and/or largest city (just for orientation purposes). I'm putting together a page on the waterfalls of northern Georgia; I have the waterfalls grouped by county, and for each group thought I could number the entries and then place corresponding numbers on a county map. I've found map generation websites, and I could probably make maps with Adobe Illustrator, but I would prefer that they be stylistically similar to other maps at Wikipedia. Thanks for any advice.

Map for a Featured Article Candidate needed

Given your excellent work on the Plymouth Colony map, your name popped into my head as being able to help with an otherwise great article that just needs a map. The article is Jersey Shore shark attacks of 1916 and the article is up for Featured Article status at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Jersey Shore shark attacks of 1916. In a nutshell the article contains a map which dates from a 1916 newspaper article; the map and data obtained from scholarly source do NOT jive, and the article could really benefit from a well done computer generated map. Take a look if you have the time. If you want to do this, you may want to check the article talk page or drop a note to User:Dmoon1, who appears to be the main custodian of this article. Jayron32 beat me to your talk page. I would greatly appreciate any help you might be able to offer. I don't think the article needs anything too technical, just an updated version of the current map in use: a map of the coast of New Jersey that contains key locations mentioned in the article (sites of the attacks), and maybe the locations of these attacks to places like New York City and Philadelphia. Recommendation

Jayron32, of Plymouth Colony fame, recommend your map-making skills to me. I am currently working on an article on Mary Wollstonecraft's Letters Written in Sweden, Norway and Denmark, a travel book she wrote about her tour of Scandinavia. I was just going to scan a map from a book I have, but a non-scanned image would be easier for users to read, I think. The map would need some basic outlines of the countries she visited and dots for the towns she visited, along with a little line detailing her travel route. There is a verbal description of her route in the article already and two of the sources I used have maps in them, which could provide you with a starting point (I could upload the clearest one somewhere for you). It depends, if the copyright has expired (British maps more than 50 years old) you can do so directly, for more modern maps you can not - but you can't copyright geographic facts, just a particular portrayal or expression of them, so you can use modern maps as a source to make a new map showing the same features as long as you don't copy their specific map design. Looks like those are old enough that the copyright would've expired though. At any rate, sure, I'd be glad to work on more India maps. Kmusser 00:16, 4 September 2007 (UTC)

Good historical maps are difficult to find, your best bet is visiting the library and finding a book that covers that period, though even then you can't usually use the maps directly due to copyright, you can draw maps based on them though and cite the book as a reference. SVG and Inkscape

River length question

Hi Karl, when Larrys Creek was on the Main Page an IP editor changed the creek's length diff with the comment "added accuracy to creek length based on NGS report". The changes (22.9 miles to 22.86 miles and 36.9 km to 36.91 km) seemed reasonable, so I left them in, but I am unable to check this or find the report and wondered if you knew what it might be.

I left a message on the IP address talk page, but there has been no response. I tried contacting the U.S. National Geodetic Survey but they do not have this information. I have looked at the National Geographic Society's website but cannot find any such reports. Since you are a professional cartographer, I thought I would see if you knew of any other possible sources of NGS reports (whatever NGS may be).

I was hoping this was real, as I would love to get more river length sources. However, I finally checked the conversion and the numbers are a bit off (22.86 miles is really 36.79 km, not 36.91), so I am starting to think this is a very sneaky vandalism. I'd go ahead and revert it. I don't know of any other likely NGS's and those two don't normally report river lengths - it's also suspicious because even when river lengths are available they aren't usually that precise. Kmusser 00:10, 1 November 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for adding those towns. There are more maps like this than can be made for existing articles, if you're interested. For example, one map could be used in these two articles about proposed colonies: Mississippi Land Company and Charlotina. You can view a map of these two colonies here. It may be hard to read, since the original had colored boundaries. I have the original if you're interested and need more details. I noticed the great maps you created at Kevin's request and then noticed this, which was something that had puzzled me. See Image:British colonies 1763-76 shepherd1923.PNG for another public domain map, this one showing an area that seems to be labeled as Charlotiana. Both spellings seem to come up about evenly on Google books.

Need advice

Karl, I am in a quandary. I was starting work on a request (on the requested maps page) for a replacement of a Muslim history gif map. I've since been collecting similar maps, blank maps, and other data in preparation. I was/am planning on creating a couple of maps to provide a consistent look to the article (etc etc).

Well, come to find out that User Javierfv1212 has just now added two maps to that article (Muslim history). The bad news is that the maps, um, well, leave something to be desired. In fact, he has uploaded a lot of maps that leave something to be desired (see these maps here).

So, what do you think I should do? I haven't started creating the map(s). Should I go ahead with my plans to create a series of maps on early Muslim history, replacing his? Or should I just mark this request closed and carry on with other requests?? And, should I give my thoughts on creating better maps??

I want to be collegial but I also want to have high-quality maps in our important articles (in fact, all articles). Help! MapMaster 23:08, 8 November 2007 (UTC)

That is a quandary. I actually kind of like his world maps, but that muslim conquest map is awful. I think I'd try talking to him first, say that you were planning on making a series on muslim history, see if he was planning on doing more along those lines and whether or not he'd be interested in collaborating on future maps. Route maps

Hi Kmusser. I am interested in making maps and have made some myself. Im not sure about the quality of my maps cos im still quite new. I have a few question on mapmaking if u dont mind. First, i plan to make route maps for airports in Malaysia. I actually created 1 for Kota Kinabalu International Airport, and based in on your map style. But it was quite ugly. I used this online map creator: [4]. Can u tell what software(s) u used to create your maps? Or do u prefer i request u to do it? I have also created route maps for airlines (Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, MASwings), but im not sure if those maps are wikipedic. U can see these maps in the link below.

For other maps, i have used available maps in commons and edited using Microsoft Paint. Some of my works can be found in Wikipedia:WikiProject Malaysia/Cartography, and in my commons gallery. Hi. I use GIS software for my maps. Fortunately my work provides ESRI software, which is expensive, but there are open source versions out there. I have a little bit more on how I make them here. You probably could do the same thing using regular graphics software if you're willing to place the destinations by hand. If you do try using GIS software you can use the digital chart of the world as a data source (includes boundaries, rivers, lakes, major cities, and more). Otherwise you are stuck with the various online mapping tools. I think the one at http://www.aquarius.geomar.de/omc/omc_intro.html might have a few more options than the one you are using. It uses ugly colors, but once the map is made you can change the colors using any graphics program. I don't know of any source for the Malaysian State boundaries other than the maps on commons so that may be a problem if you want to show them. I think the airline route maps you've already done look pretty good. If you have a bunch of maps planned that would use the same basemap, I could probably make you a blank base with just the national boundaries on it. Kmusser (talk) 15:55, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

Actually that looks pretty good. I think the only big difference in the quality is I upload mine at a higher resolution. I usually do at least 1000x1000 pixels for the route maps. River Biss

Hi there, I've been recommended to ask your advice; I am looking for a mapping tool for a smallish part of Wiltshire, England. I'm trying to generate a map showing the source and outflow of this river but all map sources seem to be copyrighted. Do you know of a free tool with this level of detail which generates free-content maps? I'd draw it myself but my artistic skills are, er, limited. Thanks for any assistance you can give. Sadly no, for bigger UK rivers I could use Digital Chart of the World data, but it's not detailed enough, and as you've found any detailed data in the UK is indeed copyrighted. Request for Locator Map of New York City

I am always impressed with your maps. I love your maps. Would it be possible to generate a map of New York City (and the associated georeferenced locator template to make it work? There's already a map on the New York City article showing the boroughs but it has bold colors and the Bronx is in red making it impossible to use it for red dots. Ottawa-Bonnechere Graben

Sorry I haven't been replying back to you. I don't know the area that well, but I do know Lake Timiskaming lies in a rift valley. The northeast arm (or most) of Lake Temagami was formed by faulting as well. Maybe the Lake Timiskaming Graben is usually merged with the Ottawa-Bonnechere Graben or is a northern extension. The southern boundary of the Ottawa-Bonnechere Graben is called the Petawawa fault on the site here, which also includes the Y branch through the Ottawa River. The site here says:The Ottawa graben, although deeply eroded, displays unmistakable rift valley morphology along a 200 km segment west of Ottawa. This segment was the first to be recognized as a graben - the Ottawa-Bonnechere graben. Since then, the graben has been traced northwestwards to Lake Nipissing and Lake Timiskaming areas where the graben bifurcates and its main faults split into divergent smaller faults. I agree with this because in the year 2000 there was an earthquake that occurred in the Lake Timiskaming, Lake Nipissing and Lake Temagami areas (most likely related to fault movement). Hi Kmusser. Could you make another map that includes the geological features inside the rift valley? There are a number of relic volcanic pipes in the Lake Nipissing area on the map here which includes the Manitou Islands, Callander Bay, the Brent impact crater etc. The Ilgachuz, Itcha and Rainbow ranges need maps as well. Sources vary, I believe it starts to lose definition east of Ottawa - it looks like the Metawawa fault continues to Montreal, but the Petawawa one stops SW of Ottawa, so the fault system does continue but not as well organized and it ceases to be a prominent landscape feature. I did extend the OBG on the map a bit, but don't want to zoom out enough to include Montreal because then I start losing detail on the Ottawa-Nipissing section which should be the focus.
