Wikipedia:WikiProject Malaysia/Cartography
The cartography department of the Malaysian WikiProject aims to assemble a collection of high-quality maps for use in Malaysia-related articles; both through obtaining existing public domain or free-license maps, and by creating new ones as needed. New maps can be created using the guidelines made ready by WikiProject Maps.
Participants
[edit]Please feel free to add your name to this list if you would like to help the project; you are also encouraged to participate in any of our taskforce or workgroup that might interest you.
Creating maps
[edit]The preferred image format according to WikiProject Maps is SVG as it retains the image quality when scaled. It is suggested that maps follow the formatting at WikiProject Maps/Conventions and uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. Wikipedia also has a help page to assist SVG users.

Geographical
[edit]Here are lists of geographical maps that are needed for the project.
Blank maps
[edit]Ideally blank maps should have borders for subdivisions in the state (ie: district or division borders)

State and Federal Territory locator maps
[edit]There is already available locator maps for all states and FT, however those maps have not conformed to the color scheme recommended below.

Locator maps
[edit]To have standardization of locator maps you may follow the suggestions below.
City locator
[edit]For major towns or cities it is better to use the whole Malaysia map image for the locator. To get locator image, you don't need to create each image for each city, but use Location map template. For Malaysia see: Module:Location map/data/Malaysia.
The format is:

Alternatively, if you want to add a map in the infobox, simply add the parameters below:

Examples:
- Kuching, lat=1.5544, long=110.3546, without caption.

- Kuala Lumpur, lat=3.1357, long=101.688, with caption (notice that frame is used if caption is defined).

Advanced usage
[edit]Images can be composed into layers, including text. These examples take advantage of , .
- Multiple cities on a map with wikilinks.

- Using different symbols for non-city locator:

Caveats
Location templates sometimes give inaccurate location of markers if the marker size is large and label may not properly aligned. The marker reference is at the top-left, not at the center. More advanced low-level image composition is given in m:Help:Composite images.
Tools and color standardization
[edit]From Wikipedia:WikiProject Maps. If your are using Microsoft Paint, on the navigation bar click on "colors" -> "edit colors" -> "define custom colors", then insert numbers under "RGB" below into respective "Red", "Green, and "Blue".
Color | Hex | RGB | Sample | Used for |
---|---|---|---|---|
Black | #000000 | 0, 0, 0 | Primary label color | |
Brown | #A08070 | 160, 128, 112 | Political borders. Country, state, and province borders should be brown. | |
Light brown | #D0C0A0 | 208, 192, 160 | Secondary political borders. | |
Light yellow | #FFFFD0 | 255, 255, 208 | Primary territory of interest, or one of four choices for four-color maps. | |
Pink | #FFD0D0 | 255, 208, 208 | Another color to be used for four-color maps. | |
Orange | #F8A20C | 248, 162, 12 | A third color to be used for four-color maps. | |
Green | #3CE67B | 60, 230, 123 | A fourth color to be used for four-color maps. | |
Light blue | #CEFEF2 | 206, 254, 242 | An alternate color to be used for four-color maps. | |
Orange | #F7D3AA | 247, 211, 170 | Alternative color for the above Tan (surrounding territories). | |
