Managing a conflict of interest

[edit]

Information icon Hello, Kittymccaffery. We welcome your contributions to Wikipedia, but if you are affiliated with some of the people, places or things you have written about in the article Gary Wales (actor), you may have a conflict of interest.

All editors are required to comply with Wikipedia's neutral point of view content policy. People who are very close to a subject often have a distorted view of it, which may cause them to inadvertently edit in ways that make the article either too flattering or too disparaging. People with a close connection to a subject are not absolutely prohibited from editing about that subject, but they need to be especially careful about ensuring their edits are verified by reliable sources and writing with as little bias as possible.

If you are very close to a subject, here are some ways you can reduce the risk of problems:

  • Avoid or exercise great caution when editing or creating articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with.
  • Avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam).
  • Exercise great caution so that you do not accidentally breach Wikipedia's content policies.

Please familiarize yourself with relevant content policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, verifiability of information, and autobiographies.

For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have a conflict of interest, please see our frequently asked questions for organizations.
* Note that I have moved the page from GaryWales to a more appropriate title at Gary Wales (actor). I can see why you couldn't use the title Gary Wales, as he's a soccer player. At least he's also Scottish! ;-) .
220 of Borg 02:54, 1 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a way someone can email me at kittymccaffery@yahoo.com so we can fix these issues? TY

I'll just go ahead and write about it here. It just seems more transparent that way. Wikipedians like transparency.
Wikipedia wants all information that's relevant for people who have articles, even information that might be interpreted as negative. You, on the other hand, have a motivation, admitted or not, to keep that potentially negative information out of the articles you write for clients. That's where your conflict of interest comes in. If you understand about how Wikipedia works, and a surprising number of people don't, you would realize that there's simply no way to guarantee that reliably sourced, negative information will appear, and stay, in the articles you help write, anyways. Heck, there's no way to guarantee that unsourced, negative information will appear, but we try our best to take such information down, particularly of living people. If this information appears, for any length of time, are you going to get the blame for it, even if you're not at fault? Maybe, if somebody doesn't realize how Wikipedia works.
Unfortunately, the best way to go about this is to not write for clients, or other people you are close to personally, or professionally, at all. So, you probably shouldn't, for example, write about your family, either.
The second best way to deal with it is actually the way you dealt with it. Dealing with it transparently, making it very clear that you are being paid as part of your job to do this. In fact, since you are a "paid editor" you are now required to do this, per the terms of use. Traditionally, however, we looks for such disclosures on the articles talk page, but the edit summary should suffice.
If you want more information, you can look here, or look at a more simplistic version here.I dream of horses If you reply here, please leave me a {{Talkback}} message on my talk page. @ 01:47, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Ways to improve Gary Wales (actor) pt. 2

Hi, I'm 220 of Borg. Kittymccaffery, thanks for creating Gary Wales (actor)!

I've just tagged the page, using our page curation tools, as having some issues to fix. Your edit summary: "created page for my client Gary Alexander Wales with his help" Raises some concerns about Wales' notability, but at least you are being open about it. :-) (The connection that is. :-\ )

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, you can leave a comment on my talk page. Or, for more editing help, talk to the volunteers at the Teahouse. 220 of Borg 04:03, 1 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The article Gary Wales (actor) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Not notable, imdb lists most roles as "uncredited" or "extra"

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, your addition of one or more external links to the page Gary Wales (actor) has been reverted.
Your edit here to Gary Wales (actor) was reverted by an automated bot that attempts to remove links which are discouraged per our external links guideline. The external link(s) you added or changed (http://www.twitter.com/OfficialGwales) is/are on my list of links to remove and probably shouldn't be included in Wikipedia. If the external link you inserted or changed was to a blog, forum, free web hosting service, fansite, or similar site (see 'Links to avoid', #11), then please check the information on the external site thoroughly. Note that such sites should probably not be linked to if they contain information that is in violation of the creator's copyright (see Linking to copyrighted works), or they are not written by a recognised, reliable source. Linking to sites that you are involved with is also strongly discouraged (see conflict of interest).
If you were trying to insert an external link that does comply with our policies and guidelines, then please accept my creator's apologies and feel free to undo the bot's revert. However, if the link does not comply with our policies and guidelines, but your edit included other, constructive, changes to the article, feel free to make those changes again without re-adding the link. Please read Wikipedia's external links guideline for more information, and consult my list of frequently-reverted sites. For more information about me, see my FAQ page. Nomination of Gary Wales (actor) for deletion

[edit]

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Gary Wales (actor) is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Gary Wales (actor) until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article. Shawn in Montreal (talk) 17:51, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

You have been tagged as a vandal. Please discuss. Bearian (talk) 20:43, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

That's actually misleading: you haven't been "tagged as a vandal." I believe yours is a promotion-only account and stated as much as the link above, but my request is in process of being turned down, because this is a "noticeboard is for obvious vandals and spammers only." I was told to take my concerns elsewhere, to a different noticeboard, which I don't intend to do. Anyway, I'm sure this is all a bit confusing to you, but you have not been "tagged as a vandal" in any official sense. Shawn in Montreal (talk) 20:51, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks to everyone who has helped with these. Yes, this has all been confusing. I am just given information either directly by celebs, their agents, or managers and I update their pages accordingly. I always try to provide as much proof as possible. I just recently realized I cannot write personal opinions or what the celebs "want" their wiki to say. I realize everything has to be strictly factual with proof and that is what I plan to provide on the accounts I have been asked to update. Thank you.

Policy requires that you be open about this kind of editing, and what you've done easily satisfies that requirement. Please continue to be careful not to add anything that's in an independent reliable source. You have a narrow path to tread, but it looks like you know how to follow it; please be careful to continue following it properly. Nyttend (talk) 00:56, 3 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Gary Wales

[edit]

Hi. i noticed a request on game of thrones page asking if anyone knew anything about Gary Wales. It would appear that the article you started incorrectly implies he had a starring part in the series, and this has not been corrected despite the problem being pointed out. I would suggest that if you are starting a new article you try to vet it first so that the facts are correct, even if they arent terribly impressive or substantial. If there isnt enough to sound interesting to the general public, then maybe it really isnt enough to justify having a wiki article. Having a striking error is more likely to motivate people here to do something about it than to give it a head start. If you are writing about someone few have ever heard of, then perhaps there is no hurry in posting something containing errors? If you end up in this situation again, then the best thing to do would be urgent action to edit the article in question into a respectable form, addressing objections people have raised, if that is possible. (But I do wish you every success in getting articles started if you can find some respectable facts to pin one around) Sandpiper (talk) 20:17, 9 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Ways to improve Kevin Healey (autism campaigner)

[edit]

Hi, I'm Salimfadhley. Kittymccaffery, thanks for creating Kevin Healey (autism campaigner)!

I've just tagged the page, using our page curation tools, as having some issues to fix. Please include coverage from mainstream, reliable sources to help users verify the content of the article.

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, you can leave a comment on my talk page. Or, for more editing help, talk to the volunteers at the Teahouse. Salimfadhley (talk) 20:25, 21 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Brandy Gillmore, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Kevin Healey (autism activist) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person, a group of people, an individual animal, an organization (band, club, company, etc.), web content, or an organized event, but it does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Hello, Kittymccaffery. It has been over six months since you last edited your Articles for Creation draft article submission, "Stephen Hart".

In accordance with our policy that Articles for Creation is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}} or {{db-g13}} code.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Thanks for your submission to Wikipedia, and happy editing. Donnie Park (talk) 20:01, 13 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
