Deletion of Le Pietre (yacht)
I was really very much upset when I saw your decision about deletion of the page Le Pietre (yacht). I think it is really unfair. The yacht maybe is not that notable at the moment but on Wikipedia you have other examples of same wooden gulets and even the whole companies advertising their businesses in building them as Cobra Yacht or Aegean Yacht. Believe me , it is really very exciting to have 35m wooden yachts being built in our days, and for those who understand it is pleasure to know about it. Can you please show me the way how the article can be further improved and upoladed again, otherwise it is a conflict of ineterest, as one of the companies mentioned above even advertises the not-launched-yet projects, without proof links. Natalia Spatar (talk) 11:17, 3 March 2011 (UTC)
- Sorry for the delayed response. I think the general sentiment at the AfD was that the article was in acceptable condition, but the ship itself didn't quite cut it in terms of notability. I understand completely that she's a special case, so I'll try to remember to keep an eye out for any additional independent articles that might be published on the yacht. Hey, just wanted to let you know I nominated P:HUDSON for featured portal. Do you want to co-nom, since you created it in the first place? I was hoping you could give some pointers/tips during the review.

- Awesome, glad to see it in such good condition, and thanks for the invitation to co-nom it. I've dreamed of someone taking the initiative to get the ball rolling again for the past few years. Unfortunately I'm quite short on time this week, but come Saturday I should be able to let you know if I have any thoughts or suggestions. Keep up the good work! Archiving
Can you tell me or show me where it shows you how to on how I archive some things on my user talk page? - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 00:07, 11 March 2011 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) See Help:Archiving a talk page. There are multiple ways you can archive a talk page; either by moving your talk page (to, say, User talk:Knowledgekid87/Archive 1), cutting and pasting old discussions into archive subpages (which MiszaBot III (talk · contribs) and ClueBot III (talk · contribs) do automatically; I personally use the former, see User:MiszaBot/config for how to use it), or saving a permanent link of a revision of your talk page and then posting the URL. For ease of navigation through your archives, you may wish to consider adding {{archives}} to your talk page and {{archive-nav}} to the top of each archive. --Dylan620 (t • c) 02:47, 11 March 2011 (UTC)

Admin Coaching
Hi Julian,
I attempted to contact you while you were on your sabbatical in regards to Admin Coaching, will you be accepting new coachees? Regards, —Ancient Apparition • Champagne? • 9:57am • 22:57, 20 March 2011 (UTC)
- Hi Ancapp. For the time being, I'd rather focus my work on content, as I intended when I returned to editing. I haven't really been all that involved in RfA-related matters for the past year, so chances are I'm a bit out of the proverbial loop. I'd be happy to work with you and answer any specific questions you may have, but I'm not prepared at the moment for formal coaching. Apologies, Juliancolton (talk) 10:53, 21 March 2011 (UTC)

pic for storm
Hi Julian, which is the best map for display at F and A? Tony (talk) 07:40, 21 March 2011 (UTC)
- Tony,
I think the lead image (File:December 26, 1969 nor'easter.jpg) is the most informative, if you know what you're looking at, but this one is more recognizable to the masses. I'd tend to go with the first map, simply because I feel it better represents the storm itself rather than its aftermath. It's difficult because there are no satellite images of the storm as there would be for modern cyclones, so the only option is to sort of improvise for illustrations... Juliancolton (talk) 10:51, 21 March 2011 (UTC)
- Julian, I've only just seen this. Had to make a fairly quick decision, and almost did put the lead one up. Oh well, I went for colour ... Tony (talk) 02:37, 23 March 2011 (UTC)
- Just as well. It was a tossup in any case, so no harm done. Thanks for all your work for the Signpost, it's always a pleasure to read. Juliancolton (talk) 18:51, 23 March 2011 (UTC)

WikiCup 2011 March newsletter
We are half way through round two of the WikiCup, which will end on 28 April. Of the 64 current contestants, 32 will make it through to the next round; the two highest in each pool, and the 16 next highest scorers. At the time of writing, our current overall leader is Hurricanehink (submissions) with 231 points, who leads Pool H. Piotrus (submissions) (Pool G) also has over 200 points, while 9 others (three of whom are in Pool D) have over 100 points. Remember that certain content (specifically, articles/portals included in at least 20 Wikipedias as of 31 December 2010 or articles which are considered "vital") is worth double points if promoted to good or featured status, or if it appears on the main page in the Did You Know column. There were some articles last round which were eligible for double points, but which were not claimed for. For more details, see Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring.
A running total of claims can be seen here. However, numerous competitors are yet to score at all- please remember to submit content soon after it is promoted, so that the judges are able to review entries. The number of points that will be needed to reach round three is not clear- everyone needs to get their entries in now to guarantee their places! If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, or by email. Good luck! You might want to check into User talk:Me ne frego's block
It's becoming a non-wikipedia like free for all, with people making value judgements about the user without addressing his points. Granted, I also don't agree with his views, but no one is seriously addressing his points either. Why would an encyclopedia, let alone this one, bar free speech during editing (sometimes with reference support apparently), especially considering this encyclopedia's content? Thegreatdr (talk) 01:16, 6 April 2011 (UTC)
- I haven't really looked into the merits of the block, but the post-block comments are out-of-line. I saw you said something about a discussion on an admin board, but I can't immediately find that... which board specifically is it on? Juliancolton (talk) 19:08, 7 April 2011 (UTC)
- My problems were primarily about the post-block response. So far, the comments say they are fine, which is shocking to me. It seems we can cast the wikipedia tennets aside with people that are clearly doing something very wrong. Look here. Thegreatdr (talk) 01:39, 8 April 2011 (UTC)
Thank you for your participation in the March 2011 GAN backlog elimination drive
On behalf of User:Wizardman and myself, we would like to take the time and thank you for your contributions made as part of the March 2011 Good articles backlog elimination drive. Awards and barnstars will go out shortly for those who have reviewed a certain number of articles.
During the backlog drive, in the month of March 2011,
- 522 GA nominations were undertaken.
- 423 GA nominations passed.
- 72 GA nominations failed.
- 27 GA nominations were on hold.
We started the GA backlog elimination drive with 378 GA nominations remaining, with 291 that were not reviewed at all. By 2:00, April 1, 2011, the backlog was at 171 GA nominations, with 100 that were left unreviewed.
At the start of the drive, the oldest unreviewed GA nomination was 101 days (Andrei Kirilenko (politician), at 20 November 2010, reviewed and passed 1 March 2011); at the end of the drive the oldest unreviewed GA nomination was 39 days (Gery Chico, at 24 February 2011, still yet to be reviewed as of this posting).
While we did not achieve the objective of getting the backlog of outstanding GA nominations down to below 50, we reduced the GA backlog by over half. The GA reviews also seemed to be of a higher quality and have consistently led, to say the least, to marginal improvements to those articles (although there were significant improvements to many, even on the some of the nominations that were failed).
If you would like to comment on the drive itself and maybe even make suggestions on how to improve the next one, please make a comment at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Good articles/GAN backlog elimination drives/March 2011#Feedback. Another GA backlog elimination drive is being planned for later this year, tentatively for September or October 2011. Also, if you have any comments or remarks on how to improve the Good article process in general, Wikipedia:WikiProject Good articles can always use some feedback at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Good articles.
Again, on behalf of User:Wizardman and myself, thank you for making the March 2011 GA backlog elimination drive a success.

You posted a comment about the bridge in the article. According to Hyde, "This is the oldest example of a concrete girder bridge designed by the Michigan State Highway Department." According to MDOT, it is the "oldest known surviving example". As for the service flags, that was a national phenomenon, not just a Michigan thing, during WWI that gets revived during every major war. Thanks for you efforts and keep up the good work. WikiCup 2011 April newsletter
Round 2 of the 2011 WikiCup is over, and the new round will begin on 1 May. Note that any points scored in the interim (that is, for content promoted or reviews completed on 29-30 April) can be claimed in the next round, but please do not start updating your submissions' pages until the next round has begun. Fewer than a quarter of our original contestants remain; 32 enter round 3, and, in two months' time, only 16 will progress to our penultimate round. Casliber (submissions), who led Pool F, was our round champion, with 411 points, while 7 contestants scored between 200 and 300 points. At the other end of the scale, a score of 41 was high enough to reach round 3; more than five times the score required to reach round 2, and competition will no doubt become tighter now we're approaching the later rounds. Those progressing to round 3 were spread fairly evenly across the pools; 4 progressed from each of pools A, B, E and H, while 3 progressed from both pools C and F. Pools D and G were the most successful; each had 5 contestants advancing.
This round saw our first good topic points this year; congratulations to Hurricanehink (submissions) and Nergaal (submissions) who also led pool H and pool B respectively. However, there remain content types for which no points have yet been scored; featured sounds, featured portals and featured topics. In addition to prizes for leaderboard positions, the WikiCup awards other prizes; for instance, last year, a prize was awarded to Candlewicke (submissions) (who has been eliminated) for his work on In The News. For this reason, working on more unusual content could be even more rewarding than usual!
Sorry this newsletter is going out a little earlier than expected- there is a busy weekend coming up! A running total of claims can be seen here. DELETION OF NICK ALLAN
Hi Julian,
On 18 May 2009 you deleted the entry for a British diplomat called "Nick Allan". http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Nick_Allan&action=edit&redlink=1
I was wondering what I could do to have it restored.
Nick was a senior member of the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office for over 20 years. The cited reason for the deletion was: "As a press secretary, Nick will sometimes be cited in the press. However, I have found no articles or indepth reliable independent sources about him, only quoting him".
I have a few courses which I am hoping might help to clear this up:
Interview with MSNBC whilst Press Secretary at the British Embassy in Washington [1]
Newsnight Interview [2]
BBC News article [3]
Media Week article [4]
FCO Press Release referring to Nick as a Press Officer [5]
FCO Press Release referring to Nick as a Press Officer [6]
Nick listed as Private Secretary to Baroness Symons [7]
Indie article mentioning Nick as Press Secretary at the British Embassy in Paris [8]
I look forward to hearing from you.

FAC of Hurricane Michael (2000)
Hello Julian Colton, I am strongly considering re-nominating Hurricane Michael (2000) for FAC. I am notifying you about this because you are one of the "major contributors" of the article. Regards,--12george1 (talk) 03:11, 26 May 2011 (UTC)
- Works for me. I would suggest completely cutting out the last paragraph of the lead, which seems like a random collection of trivial facts, and the firs sentence of the lead seems a little odd. Other than that, I think it's a very decent article for all the polishing you've done to it. Juliancolton (talk) 10:41, 26 May 2011 (UTC)

RFC for user TreasuryTag
Hello! I was upset by the way that TreasuryTag had behaved on a recent AFD (Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Terry (Fawlty Towers)). TreasuryTag really made the AFD environment hostile, and for that reason I'm going to try to raise an RFC. The RfC process is geared towards a single dispute, and requires that two people attest to having tried to bring the dispute to the user's attention on their talk page, and that this intervention failed. I am putting myself forward as one of these editors, and I have described you as the other (for commenting on TreasuryTag’s placement of a ‘Welcome to wikipedia’ note on. If you agree with my RFC request then could you please sign it at the 'Attempts by certifier C2' section? It is temporarily here (here) while I get some feedback on it from here ( here).
My interest in this is that I'm a fairly new user, and have never been involved in a dispute with TreasuryTag, however was put off voting on the AFD process in question. All best, Chris (aka) TehGrauniad (talk) 15:59, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

WikiCup 2011 May newsletter
We're half way through round 3 of the 2011 WikiCup. There are currently 32 remaining in the competition, but only 16 will progress to our penultimate round. Casliber (submissions), of pool D, is our overall leader with nearly 200 points, while pools A, B and C are led by Racepacket (submissions), Hurricanehink (submissions) and Canada Hky (submissions) respectively. The score required to reach the next round is 35, though this will no doubt go up significantly as the round progresses. We have a good number of high scorers, but also a considerable number who are yet to score. Please remember to submit content soon after it is promoted, so that the judges are able to review entries. Also, an important note concerning nominations at featured article candidates: if you are nominating content for which you intend to claim WikiCup points, please make this clear in the nomination statement so that the FAC director and his delegates are aware of the fact.
A running total of claims can be seen here. Good luck! On 30 May 2009, you deleted the article on Odaxelagnia. Currently, its reincarnation is not substantiated by reliable research databases, and I'm worried that it's not a valid paraphilia, as recognised by the academic community. Knowing the rationale behind the original deletion might help. Thanks Julian. Best, Mephtalk 08:37, 6 June 2011 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of File:Varsity Scout emblem.svg
A tag has been placed on File:Varsity Scout emblem.svg, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:
Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion," which appears inside of the speedy deletion ({{db-...}}
) tag (if no such tag exists, the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate). Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 09:28, 10 June 2011 (UTC)

Gamma Sigma Fraternity
Julian, I would like to discuss with you the deletion of the Gamma Sigma Fraternity page. I am a novice when it come to Wiki, but am concerned with our 150th Bash coming up that some alums will be at a lost. Can you tell me why it was deleted. I was on a page of one of our most famous alum's (AC Gilbert) and when I clicked on a link, I realized you had deleted the page. As a former president 1990-1991, I can give you access to whatever information you will need to verify us as a Fraternal organization. Neil E. Conlon
- Neil,
Unfortunately, I'm unable to locate the page in question. I deleted several thousand articles when I was active as an administrator a few years back, so I don't remember most of the specific cases I dealt with. However, very seldom did I make the unilateral decision to delete an article, so in all probability, I was simply acting on an existing consensus formed by other project editors. That said, if you can supply a link to the article you're affiliated with, I'd be more than happy to reevaluate it and see what I can do to help. Regards, Juliancolton (talk) 14:35, 24 June 2011 (UTC)

WikiCup 2011 June newsletter
We are half way through 2011, and entering the penultimate round of this year's WikiCup; the semi-finals are upon us! Points scored in the interim (29/30 June) may be counted towards next round, but please do not update your submissions' pages until the next round has begun. 16 contestants remain, and all have shown dedication to the project to reach this far. Our round leader was Casliber (submissions) who, among other things, successfully passed three articles through featured article candidates and claimed an impressive 29 articles at Did You Know, scoring 555 points. Casliber led pool D. Pool A was led by Wizardman (submissions), claiming points for a featured article, a featured list and seven good article reviews, while pool C was led by Eisfbnore (submissions), who claimed for two good articles, ten articles at Did You Know and four good article reviews. They scored 154 and 118 respectively. Pool B was by far our most competitive pool; six of the eight competitors made it through to round 4, with all of them scoring over 100 points. The pool was led by Hurricanehink (submissions), who claimed for, among other things, three featured articles and five good articles. In addition to the four pool leaders, 12 others (the four second places, and the 8 next highest overall) make up our final 16. The lowest scorer who reached round 4 scored 76 points; a significant increase on the 41 needed to reach round 3. Eight of our semi-finalists scored at least twice as much as this.
No points were awarded this round for featured pictures, good topics or In the News, and no points have been awarded in the whole competition for featured topics, featured portals or featured sounds. Instead, the highest percentage of points has come from good articles. Featured articles, despite their high point cost, are low in number, and so, overall, share a comparable number of points with Did You Know, which are high in number but low in cost. A comparatively small but still considerable number of points come from featured lists and good article reviews, rounding out this round's overall scores.
We would again like to thank Jarry1250 (submissions) and Stone (submissions) for invaluable background work, as well as all of those helping to provide reviews for the articles listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Please do keep using it, and please do help by providing reviews for the articles listed there. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews generally at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup.
Two final notes: Firstly, please remember to state your participation in the WikiCup when nominating articles at FAC. Finally, some WikiCup-related statistics can be seen here and here, for those interested, though it appears that neither are completely accurate at this time. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, or by email. Good luck! GOCE drive invitation
Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors
The latest GOCE backlog elimination drive is under way! It began on 1 July and so far 18 people have signed up to help us reduce the number of articles in need of copyediting. This drive will give a 50% bonus for articles edited from the GOCE requests page. Although we have cleared the backlog of 2009 articles there are still 3,935 articles needing copyediting and any help, no matter how small, would be appreciated. We are appealing to all GOCE members, and any other editors who wish to participate, to come and help us reduce the number of articles needing copyediting, as well as the backlog of requests. If you have not signed up yet, why not take a look at the current signatories and help us by adding your name and copyediting a few articles. Barnstars will be given to anyone who edits more than 4,000 words, with special awards for the top 5 in the categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", and "Number of articles of over 5,000 words". |

Recovery of old landphoon article content
Even though the article was initially deleted 2-3 years ago, is there any way that content can be recovered? Or is this one of those rare cases on wikipedia that once it is gone, it is gone? I'd rather not recreate that content from scratch. Curious. Thegreatdr (talk) 20:29, 16 July 2011 (UTC)

Hurricane Danny intro
Thanks for patching up the main page blurb for Hurricane Danny. I was just fixing up the introduction of the article itself to go along with the main page somewhat and I was wondering if you could double check it for me. I managed to get rid of all the "deaths" repeat, but occurred seems to be the recurring problem now. If I were to remove them completely, it may sound somewhat informal/unencyclopedic. Thanks again, hopefully my bad grammar from years ago can be purged. Hello32020 (talk) 19:04, 17 July 2011 (UTC)
- Glad to help. The lead of the article doesn't have to correspond to the main page paragraph, and indeed I'm starting to think they should be written with different audiences in mind (the TFA blurb made more general and the article intro made more specific and detailed). I think you might want to check the lead for overlinking though... for example, "warm waters" and "wind" are all but obvious, so you don't need to link those. Congrats on the TFA in any event! Re: bureaucracy
I strongly agree with what you said about bureaucracy over on ANI. In the past, I even joked with tbsdu in saying that we should send the noticeboards he created to MfD. The thing of it is, if you take a step back, and take the big picture view, the problem becomes clear. We can't just blame the target demographic for the evolving/emerging bureaucracy; the problem can be directly traced to an inability to address and solve persistent problems (vandalism, plagiarism, COI, tribal conflicts, culture wars, one user one account, etc.) with an emphasis on command and control rather than problem solving and prevention. All of our efforts as Wikipedians should be spent on research, interfacing with experts on an interdisciplinary level and bridging the false divide between disciplines, and improving our coverage of topics and refining the composition and interaction between editor and reader, such that there is more input from readers feeding into the editorial process. We are getting there, but where we are now and the potential of what we could be in the future is limited by the lack of vision. Seriously, think about how much precious time is wasted talking about utter nonsense, fighting vandals, and trying to figure out if Mr. T is really Mrs. D in disguise. The administration of this site takes up too much overhead, and needs to be streamlined for efficiency and results, with more energy spent on writing projects, attracting and retaining experts, and appealing to the needs of our readers. Viriditas (talk) 07:38, 17 July 2011 (UTC)
- Viriditas,
Your comments are a perfect extrapolation of my brief train of thought associated with my comments at ANI. Since returning to editing after about a year of absence from the project, I've really come to believe that we're doing ourselves little good by exerting so much of our shrinking editor resources on making sure everybody's obeying the list of ALLCAPSANCRONYMS. In many ways, I believe the enwiki community has come to resemble the storyline of Lord of the Flies... we've abandoned productivity in favor of dividing ourselves into tribes and trying to prevent each other from going forward. I admit to not being entirely familiar with the situation related to the ANI thread in question, but even so I believe our efforts are misguided in those sorts of cases. Juliancolton (talk) 16:43, 17 July 2011 (UTC)
- I would like to hear more about your fresh perspective on the situation. There are continuing behavioral problems due to different maturity levels and other factors, but the problem I see occurring again and again is the MMORPG factor. Many users think of this site as just another game to be played, and AN/ANI only encourages that attitude. One way to "go forward" as you say, is to take that game-playing impetus and focus it solely on research and development. For example, just the other day, I was reading an article I was working on and I began to think to myself, "this page would be far more effective if users could choose to hear the material and watch it in a presentation mode, such that video and images would be presented in a full screen, ideal for classrooms and education. We need to take this to the next level. Text is good, and will always be the backbone of the site, but we need to start visualizing topics and begin to allow users to interact with the data. Viriditas (talk) 11:07, 20 July 2011 (UTC)
- I know it's unenforceable, impractical, and not ever likely to happen, but I truly think it would be a huge benefit to the project to at the very least strongly encourage the use of real names when editing—or at least relating your username to your real-life identity in some way. It's widely accepted that internet users will be more courteous and respectful to each other when they have some grasp of their colleagues' real-life name, persona, identity, what have you. Even I've found that after seeing so much as a picture of a user I'm in disagreement with, it's more likely to occur to me that the other party is indeed a living person, and I often find myself revising my attitude toward them. In its early stages, Wikipedia was largely a social experiment to see what a bunch of non-experts with a computer could cook up given enough time. Now that the project is maturing, and it's far too late to turn back now, I maintain that we need to focus on figuring out how to best educate our readers, as you mentioned.
The open-editing, assume-good-faith model has both its perks and drawbacks, but I'm of the opinion that we need to start emphasizing the importance of expert peer reviewing and editing and giving verified and credentialed users more leverage in content-related debates pertinent to their fields of work. Wikipedia is decreasing in editorship according to many studies, but our base of readers remains vast, and I'd say a good chunk of internet users rely on WP for every-day curiosities. And it would be irresponsible for us as editors and members of the project community to continue to allow inaccurate, misleading, uncited and unreviewed content to lay around by the hundreds of thousands of pages.
Another tool we need in my opinion is a governing body for content. Nothing like ArbCom, of course, but a body of credentialed and experienced users, both in real-life and on wiki, to step in when content disputes arise, and to make sure we're following our basic policies. This would also in many ways eliminate the need for users to "play the game" and try to out-diff or out-ALLCAPS other users in long, drawn-out ANI threads. Obviously we can never make everybody get along, but setting more specific parameters for contributing content would be a huge step in the right direction as far as I'm concerned. Just my thoughts... Juliancolton (talk) 18:03, 21 July 2011 (UTC)
- Have you had a chance to look at the The Conversation? As only one example, this is a group of vetted experts who we could draw upon for non-binding content peer review. Take a look at the site and let me know what you think. Viriditas (talk) 08:43, 22 July 2011 (UTC)
WikiCup 2011 July newsletter
We are half way through the penultimate round of this year's WikiCup; there is less than a month to go before we have our final 8. Our pool leaders are Adabow (submissions) (Pool A, 189 points) and PresN (submissions) (Pool B, 165 points). The number of points required to reach the next round is not clear at this time; there are some users who still do not have any recorded points. Please remember to update your submissions' pages promptly. In addition, congratulations to PresN, who scored the first featured topic points in the competition for his work on Thatgamecompany related articles. Most points this round generally have, so far, come from good articles, with only one featured article (White-bellied Sea Eagle, from Casliber (submissions)) and two featured lists (Hugo Award for Best Graphic Story, from PresN and Grammy Award for Best Native American Music Album, from Another Believer (submissions)). Points for Did You Know and good article reviews round out the scoring. No points have been awarded for In the News, good topics or featured pictures this round, and no points for featured sounds or portals have been awarded in the entire competition. On an unrelated note, preparation will be beginning soon for next year's WikiCup- watch this space!
There is little else to be said beyond the usual. Please list anything you need reviewing on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, so others following the WikiCup can help, and please do help if you can by providing reviews for the articles listed there. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews generally at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup- points are, of course, offered for reviews at GAC. Two final notes: Firstly, please remember to state your participation in the WikiCup when nominating articles at FAC. Finally, some WikiCup-related statistics can be seen here and here. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, or by email. Good luck! DYK for 1861 Atlantic hurricane season
On 2 August 2011, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article 1861 Atlantic hurricane season, which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that during a hurricane in November 1861, a man charged two cents per ride to transport passengers by boat to and from a popular New York City bar surrounded by floodwaters? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template talk:Did you know/1861 Atlantic hurricane season. You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |

Query about Simple and Michigan Highways
Once we get the template situation sorted out, I'm looking at starting to rewrite the content of the Michigan FAs on Simple. The question I have is what is the best way to transfer the content. Should I transwiki the article, or just c/p with a note in the edit summary or a template on the talk page? Should I c/p each section one at a time over and immediately rewrite it that section? I figure that I'll start with the FAs because the content there is fairly stable and high-quality to start, but I want to get the initial content moved over properly while I work on rewriting it. I have a conundrum
User:Ali Historian and I have attempted to communicate on the Samanid talk page and each other's talk pages. I am unsure whether or not he/she understands what I have posted, since his/her posts on my talk page are clearly of someone that is not sufficiently fluent in English to clearly understand someone else. Essentially, what are my options? I have two university sources that state the Samanids were Tajik, however there are some sources that call them Persian/Iranian(which I have said can be included as long as Tajik and associated sources are not removed). However, I am not sure Ali understands this. How can I reach a consensus/compromise with someone that can not understand English that well? --Kansas Bear (talk) 00:02, 10 August 2011 (UTC)

During the 1911 Atlantic hurricane season, a below-average number of six known tropical cyclones formed in the Atlantic during the summer and fall months. Additionally, three non-developing tropical depressions are thought to have existed, including one that began the season in February and one that ended the season when it dissipated in December. Half of the officially recognized storms intensified into hurricanes, of which two attained Category 2 status on the modern-day Saffir–Simpson Hurricane Scale. Most of the cyclones directly impacted land. A westward-moving hurricane made landfall south of Savannah, Georgia, on August 28, killing 17 people and leaving severe damage in and around Charleston, South Carolina. A couple of weeks earlier, the Pensacola, Florida, area suffered from a storm in the Gulf of Mexico that produced winds of 80 mph (130 km/h) over land. The fourth storm of the season struck the coast of Nicaragua; it killed 10 and inflicted extensive damage. Given the relative lack of real-time observations at the time, storm data is largely based on an ongoing reanalysis of the Atlantic hurricane database. (more...)

WikiCup 2011 July newsletter
The finals are upon us; we're down to the last few. One of the eight remaining contestants will be this year's WikiCup champion! 150 was the score needed to progress to the final; just under double the 76 required to reach round 4, and more than triple the 41 required to reach round 3. Our eight finalists are:
- Casliber (submissions), Pool A's winner. Casliber has the highest total score in the competition, with 1528, the bulk of which is made up of 8 featured articles. He has the highest number of total featured articles (8, 1 of which was eligible for double points) and total did you knows (72) of any finalist. Casliber writes mostly on biology, including ornithology, botany and mycology.
- PresN (submissions), Pool B's winner and the highest scorer this round. PresN is the only finalist who has scored featured topic points, and he has gathered an impressive 330, but most of his points come from his 4 featured articles, one of which scored double. PresN writes mostly on video games and the Hugo Awards.
- Hurricanehink (submissions), Pool A's runner-up. Hurricanehink's points are mostly from his 30 good articles, more than any other finalist, and he is also the only finalist to score good topic points. Hurricanehink, as his name suggests, writes mostly on meteorology.
- Wizardman (submissions), Pool B's runner-up. Wizardman has completed 86 good article reviews, more than any other finalist, but most of his points come from his 2 featured articles. Wizardman writes mostly on American sport, especially baseball.
- Miyagawa (submissions), the "fastest loser" (Pool A). Miyagawa has written 3 featured lists, one of which was awarded double points, more than any other finalist, but he was awarded points mostly for his 68 did you knows. Miyagawa writes on a variety of topics, including dogs, military history and sport.
- Resolute (submissions), the second "fastest loser" (Pool B). Most of Resolute's points come from his 9 good articles. He writes mostly on Canadian topics, including ice hockey.
- Yellow Evan (submissions), who was joint third "fastest loser" (Pool A). Most of Evan's points come from his 10 good articles, and he writes mostly on meteorology.
- Sp33dyphil (submissions), who was joint third "fastest loser" (Pool B). Most of Phil's points come from his 9 good articles, 4 of which (more than any other finalist) were eligible for double points. He writes mostly on aeronautics.
We say goodbye to our seven other semi-finalists, Another Believer (submissions), Piotrus (submissions), Grandiose (submissions), Stone (submissions), Eisfbnore (submissions), Canada Hky (submissions) and MuZemike (submissions). Everyone still in the competition at this stage has done fantastically well, and contributed greatly to Wikipedia. We're on the home straight now, and we will know our winner in two months.
In other news, preparations for next year's competition have begun with a brainstorming thread. Please, feel free to drop by and share any thoughts you have about how the competition should work next year. Sign ups are not yet open, but will be opened in due course. Watch this space. Further, there has been a discussion about the rule whereby those in the WikiCup must delcare their participation when nominating articles at featured article candidates. This has resulted in a bot being created by new featured article delegate Ucucha (talk · contribs). The bot will leave a message on FAC pages if the nominator is a participant in the WikiCup.
A reminder of the rules: any points scored after August 29 may be claimed for the final round, and please remember to update submission pages promptly. If you are concerned that your nomination, be it at good article candidates, a featured process or anywhere else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. User:Ks0stm's RfA
I had a question for you about this user. While I have gone through his contributions and I see things that were troubling enough for me to oppose, I'm sure that you have done a lot more research into this editor's background than I have. I'm curious what your thoughts are about the concerns I listed in my oppose argument. The only thing that has given me pause is that you nominated him, and I doubt for a second that you would nominate someone you were in any way unsure of. I'm overall extremely impressed with their abilities, and want to believe they would be a good administrator, as you seem to believe. Trusilver 23:08, 8 September 2011 (UTC)
- As I understand it, your main concern is that Ks0stm still shows signs of residual maturity and judgement issues, and another six months would do him good. If I'm perfectly honest, I do think there is merit to that, and overall the objections are, to an extent, more persuasive than some of my other experiences with nominating users. I'm not going to try to deny that the whole "Q3" thing represents a not insignificant lapse in judgement, but to me it becomes an issue of whether it's actually representative of a lack of judgement rather than a lapse in judgement. I don't think it is. I have to admit that I was not aware of this particular incident prior to nominating him; I nominated him largely, if not mainly on the basis of my previous experiences with him. Through talking to him and viewing his work, I felt comfortable that he had a thorough understanding of the project's principles and fundamentals. I think there are additional benefits of promoting college students to the position of sysop, and while of course I'm not saying we should blindly nominate them, this was an added factor in my considerations. However, even after reviewing the mounting concerns, I'm still convinced that the candidate would make an excellent administrator. I believe it's entirely possible to perform exceptionally well 99.7% of the time, with the occasional quarrel or a tendency to get a little frustrated. In that case, if the admin has a comprehensive basic understanding of how the project works, and has the knowledge and resources to make a difference, the benefits outweigh the small issues that may crop up. Also, I think it's increasingly likely after this RfA concludes (successful or otherwise) that Ks0stm will be more transparent about his mistakes and willing to admit to them. I know it's not especially reassuring, but I do believe that users can change fundamentally over the course of a week (or even a day). In any case, I really appreciate you taking the initiative to delve deeper and consider all sides of the spectrum. Juliancolton (talk) 23:55, 8 September 2011 (UTC)

RfA
Hello, I am hoping to eventually request adminship again and was wondering if you have any advice for candidates. I don't want to rush it, as I know that's what caused my first attempt's closure. I would use the tools mainly for work in CSD and AIV. I appreciate any criticism you may have. Thank you, Tarheel95 (talk) 01:23, 10 September 2011 (UTC)
- Honestly, I think you should probably work on your userpage; it comes off as a little childish. I don't know if you're actually a kid, but there is an apprehensiveness at RfA to promote someone who looks (as far as that goes on WP) like a high school student. That's not to say we don't promote high school students... you just have to not look like one. The school notice should probably be replaced with a simple, professional banner that says your time is limited. You should probably remove the over 9,000 thing. That said, if you're willing to make your userpage a little less flamboyant, I'd be happy to give you a more in-depth review, but for now I think that's the biggest issue. Good luck! Juliancolton (talk) 01:46, 10 September 2011 (UTC)
- Hope Julian doesn't mind me chiming in here a little, but I agree with him on the userpage. If you have been around RfA for a reasonable amount of time, you will come to notice that there are people who will oppose you for EVERY reason under the sun. I have seen opposes for userboxes proclaiming Christianity, for userboxes announcing a political affiliation, for userboxes proclaiming edit count... for userboxes period. Basically, the more professional your userpage looks, the less there is to take offense with. Trusilver 03:33, 10 September 2011 (UTC)
- I have implemented all suggestions and appreciate the feedback. If you have any additional suggestions, please do not hesitate to share them. Thank you both, Tarheel95 (talk) 19:24, 10 September 2011 (UTC)
- If I may chime in with one: Use edit summaries. Admins are expected to be good communicators and people who don't even take a second to explain their edits are likely to be opposed on that ground. I for example almost never support any candidate who does not use edit summaries and a couple of people feel the same or at least see it as a reason to doubt the candidate's communication skills. Archive protection
As you have previously protected my previous talk page archives with no question, could you please protect User talk:Osarius/Archive_4 for me? Thank you in advance. Osarius : T : C : Been CSD'd? 16:23, 12 September 2011 (UTC)
- Looks like somebody else semi-protected it. Is that what you needed? Juliancolton (talk) 18:49, 12 September 2011 (UTC)
- No, I asked for full. Sorry about bothering you about it. Osarius : T : C : Been CSD'd? 19:32, 12 September 2011 (UTC)
Julian do you not think it was a silly thing to do to protect these archives fully, meaning he can't even edit them himself? Even more so considering another admin rejected his request for protection as needless [2]--Jac16888 Talk 00:23, 13 September 2011 (UTC)
- He asked for it, and it's in his userspace. I always full-protect my archives, and have followed a policy of fulfilling any other users' requests to do so with their own. I didn't know about the RFPP request, but it's not against policy. Juliancolton (talk) 00:40, 13 September 2011 (UTC)
- Thank you Julian. As for Jac16888, as it is an archive it has no need to be edited, hence the archive template on the page which states "Do not edit the contents of this page." Protecting the page prevents editing, re-enforcing the message. I would prefer my archives to be fully protected, and as it is a request within my own userspace there really isn't a reason why it should be declined, whether or not it had been vandalised. You wouldn't decline an author page-blank within their own userspace, so why decline a page protection? Osarius : T : C : Been CSD'd? 12:31, 13 September 2011 (UTC)
- I would have declined it too, userpage protection is up to the admins discretion. I see no point in protecting subpages and archives needlessly, and you've given no reason why its at all necessary, as far as I can see its nothing but hat collecting--Jac16888 Talk 12:50, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

Interview with Wikimedia Foundation
Hi Julian, I hope you are well. My name is Matthew and I work on the fundraising team at the Wikimedia Foundation in San Francisco. We're busy preparing for this year's fundraiser, which starts in November, and we're looking to increase the number and diversity of the voices who participate. In the past, Jimmy's banner has been the driving force for raising money, and with great success. He alone, however, doesn't represent the diverse community that makes the WP projects so important, so we'd like to interview more Wikipedians like you. I wonder if you'd like to participate? Please let me know by emailing mroth@wikimedia.org. Thanks and have an excellent day! Matthew (WMF) 20:52, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

News and progress from RfA reform 2011
RfA reform: ...and what you can do now.
|
---|
(You are receiving this message because you are either a task force member, or you have contributed to recent discussions on any of these pages.) The number of nominations continues to nosedive seriously, according to these monthly figures. We know why this is, and if the trend continues our reserve of active admins will soon be underwater. Wikipedia now needs suitable editors to come forward. This can only be achieved either through changes to the current system, a radical alternative, or by fiat from elsewhere. A lot of work is constantly being done behind the scenes by the coordinators and task force members, such as monitoring the talk pages, discussing new ideas, organising the project pages, researching statistics and keeping them up to date. You'll also see for example that we have recently made tables to compare how other Wikipedias choose their sysops, and some tools have been developed to more closely examine !voters' habits. The purpose of WP:RFA2011 is to focus attention on specific issues of our admin selection process and to develop RfC proposals for solutions to improve them. For this, we have organised the project into dedicated sections each with their own discussion pages. It is important to understand that all Wikipedia policy changes take a long time to implement whether or not the discussions appear to be active - getting the proposals right before offering them for discussion by the broader community is crucial to the success of any RfC. Consider keeping the pages and their talk pages on your watchlist; do check out older threads before starting a new one on topics that have been discussed already, and if you start a new thread, please revisit it regularly to follow up on new comments. The object of WP:RFA2011 is not to make it either easier or harder to become an admin - those criteria are set by those who !vote at each RfA. By providing a unique venue for developing ideas for change independent of the general discussion at WT:RFA, the project has two clearly defined goals:
The fastest way is through improvement to the current system. Workspace is however also available within the project pages to suggest and discuss ideas that are not strictly within the remit of this project. Users are invited to make use of these pages where they will offer maximum exposure to the broader community, rather than individual projects in user space. We already know what's wrong with RfA - let's not clutter the project with perennial chat. RFA2011 is now ready to propose some of the elements of reform, and all the task force needs to do now is to pre-draft those proposals in the project's workspace, agree on the wording, and then offer them for central discussion where the entire Wikipedia community will be more than welcome to express their opinions in order to build consensus. New tool Check your RfA !voting history! Since the editors' RfA !vote counter at X!-Tools has been down for a long while, we now have a new RfA Vote Counter to replace it. A significant improvement on the former tool, it provides a a complete breakdown of an editor's RfA votes, together with an analysis of the participant's voting pattern. Are you ready to help? Although the main engine of RFA2011 is its task force, constructive comments from any editors are always welcome on the project's various talk pages. The main reasons why WT:RfA was never successful in getting anything done are that threads on different aspects of RfA are all mixed together, and are then archived where nobody remembers them and where they are hard to find - the same is true of ad hoc threads on the founder's talk page. |

Main page appearance: 1941 Florida hurricane
This is a note to let the main editors of 1941 Florida hurricane know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on October 3, 2011. You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/October 3, 2011. If you prefer that the article appear as TFA on a different date, or not at all, please ask featured article director Raul654 (talk · contribs) or his delegate Dabomb87 (talk · contribs), or start a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Today's featured article/requests. If the previous blurb needs tweaking, you might change it—following the instructions at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. The blurb as it stands now is below:
The 1941 Florida hurricane was a strong tropical cyclone that affected the Bahamas, Florida, and the southeastern United States in October 1941. The fifth known storm of the 1941 Atlantic hurricane season, it was first observed to the north of the Virgin Islands on October 3. The storm tracked generally westward through the Bahamas, reaching peak winds of 120 miles per hour (190 km/h). After moving across southern Florida the hurricane emerged into the Gulf of Mexico and made another landfall along the Florida Panhandle. Turning northeast, it crossed Georgia and South Carolina, and entered the Atlantic Ocean on October 8. In the Bahamas, where winds reached 104 miles per hour (167 km/h), the storm killed three people. The city of Nassau was struck particularly hard. In Florida, damage was relatively severe, and included the deaths of several people. High winds brought down trees and powerlines, though the storm was characterized by highly unusual rainfall patterns. Storm surge in the Everglades region flooded local streets. As the storm progressed northward, the city of Tallahassee suffered widespread power outages and damage to numerous vehicles. Throughout the state, the hurricane inflicted $675,000 (1941 USD) in damages. The cyclone later killed one person in Georgia. (more...)

WikiCup 2011 September newsletter
We are on this year's home straight, with less than a month to go until the winner of the 2011 WikiCup will be decided. The fight for first place is currently being contested by Miyagawa (submissions), Hurricanehink (submissions) and Sp33dyphil (submissions), all of whom have over 200 points. This round has already seen multiple featured articles (1991 Atlantic hurricane season from Hurricanehink and Northrop YF-23 from Sp33dyphil) and a double-scoring featured list (Miyagawa's 1948 Summer Olympics medal table). The scores will likely increase far further before the end of the round on October 31 as everyone ups their pace. There is not much more to say- thoughts about next year's competition are welcome on the WikiCup talk page or the scoring talk page, and signups will open once a few things have been sorted out.
As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, or by email. Good luck! Mentor Help Needed
Hi Julian, I am doing my first GA review at David Mirkin. The article is very well sourced but in my opinion it is a clear fail based on serious prose and MOS issues. However, since it is my first time doing a review, I would greatly appreciate it if you could glance at the article and my GA review comments and give me some feedback. Am I being too hard on these wonderful editors who have worked so hard to expand and cite this BLP? Or am I on the right track? Your feedback is appreciated. Many thanks in advance. Deletion of California Dream Week
Hello, you have deleted a page California Dream Week. Please give me advise for keeping this page alive. Thanks.
Ludmila cdw (talk) 17:32, 2 November 2011 (UTC)
- Hi Julian and Ludmila. Ludmila has asked me for advice on my talk page regarding the above deleted article, as I had responded to a helpme request of hers. Having looked at your deletion, you used G4 but I only see prior speedy deletions, and if there was no prior deletion discussions at XfD, G4 did not apply. However, this page reads to me as blatant advertising, eligible for speedy deletion under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, and so I see little purpose in undeletion, except to just turn around and delete it immediately again on a more applicable basis. So my advice, Ludmila, is to go to WP:REFUND and ask for userfication (not undeletion). Then work hard on writing the article neutrally, taking out the promotional material such as the peacock language. Then, when you are ready to go live, you can move it to the main part of the encyclopedia.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 19:21, 2 November 2011 (UTC)
"Fractures" in short-wave troughs
Hink recommended I ask you this question, as I have no clue what it means ;)
In the Monthly Weather Review's article for the hurricane season of 1959, see page 444, "Hurricane Cindy". There, it says "With the fracture in the short-wave trough" — the first problem is, a shortwave isn't mentioned earlier in the part about Cindy. The second problem is that I dunno what a "fracture" in a short-wave trough is. If you could answer my questions, that would be great. Thanks, HurricaneFan25 16:37, 4 November 2011 (UTC)
- The shortwave can probably be interpreted as a product of the dominant cold front that moved SE with the northern low pressure area (and a shortwave is simply an upper-level frontal boundary on a smaller scale tan surface fronts). It's evident in this 500 mb chart from July 3, 1959. A trough fracture is a really obscure term for when one region of vorticity splits into two. My guess is that when the shortwave split, the southern segment transferred to the surface and spun up a hurricane. But this all seems too technical for the average reader, so I wouldn't worry too much about putting this in the article. Juliancolton (talk) 18:52, 4 November 2011 (UTC)

Increasingly the concept of exposomes is being discussed in my field (environmental epidemiology), and I felt that it would be worth starting a page on this. Many thanks in advance.Jimjamjak (talk) 08:37, 9 November 2011 (UTC)

Could you please take a look at Bulgaria ? It is currently undergoing a peer review and I think of proposing it for Featured Article status in a month or so. There are some language issues, and it hasn't been standartised to any version of English yet. Any help is appreciated. Regards, - ☣Tourbillon A ? 12:59, 12 November 2011 (UTC)

Considering an RfA, Mind taking a look?
Hey Julian. Mind taking a look at my contributions and giving me your thoughts on a possible RfA? I'm just feeling it out right now, and I'd like to get some input before I actually try for it. You'll notice that I don't have nearly the volume of edits as many others (only around 1600 globally), however I have been a part of the community for a long while now (my first edit being on February 23, 2006). Now there have been time periods in this where I've edited more and edited less as time allows, however I am getting back into the swing of things now! Thanks, and no hard feelings if you don't think I'm quite ready for it. Any input is greatly appreciated! nf utvol (talk) 19:34, 23 November 2011 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker). I'm sorry to say but you'd not stand a chance at RFA - and that's not your fault I might add. However this level of activity is just not up to the current "standards" at RFA. I'd recommend a flick through Wikipedia:Unsuccessful adminship candidacies (Chronological)/2011 to see how tough it's got. As a rough guide, 5,000 edits and 8-12 months active (300+) edits a month is now almost mandated as a minimum. I for one wish it was otherwise, but it is what it is..... :( Pedro : Chat 22:16, 23 November 2011 (UTC)

Main page appearance: Tropical Storm Barry (2001)
This is a note to let the main editors of Tropical Storm Barry (2001) know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on December 3, 2011. You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/December 3, 2011.
Tropical Storm Barry was a strong tropical storm that made landfall on the Florida Panhandle during August 2001. The third tropical cyclone and second named storm of the 2001 Atlantic hurricane season, Barry developed from a tropical wave that moved off the coast of Africa on July 24 and tracked westward. The wave entered the Caribbean on July 29 and spawned a low pressure area that organized into Tropical Storm Barry on August 3. After fluctuating in intensity and track, the system attained peak winds of 70 mph (110 km/h) over the Gulf of Mexico, and headed northward before moving ashore on the Gulf Coast. Unlike the devastating Tropical Storm Allison earlier in the season, Barry's effects were moderate. Nine deaths occurred, six in Cuba and three in Florida. As a tropical cyclone, rainfall peaked at 8.9 in (230 mm) at Tallahassee, and winds gusts topped out at 79 mph (127 km/h). The wave that would become Barry dropped large amounts of rain across southern Florida, leading to significant flooding and structural damage. Moderate flooding occurred throughout the Panhandle, where damage as a result of high wind gusts was also reported. Barry is estimated to have caused $30 million (2001 USD, $36.5 million 2008 USD) in damage. (more...)

This is a note to let the main editors of Typhoon Tip know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on December 31, 2011. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. The blurb as it stands now is below:
Typhoon Tip was the largest and most intense tropical cyclone on record. The nineteenth tropical storm and twelfth typhoon of the 1979 Pacific typhoon season, Tip developed out of a disturbance in the monsoon trough on October 4 near Pohnpei. Initially, a tropical storm to its northwest hindered the development and motion of Tip, though after it tracked further north Tip was able to intensify. After passing Guam, it rapidly intensified and reached peak winds of 305 km/h (190 mph) and a worldwide record low sea-level pressure of 870 mbar (hPa, 25.69 inHg) on October 12. At its peak strength, it was also the largest tropical cyclone on record with a diameter of 2,220 km (1,380 mi). It slowly weakened as it continued west-northwestward, and later turned to the northeast under the influence of an approaching trough. Tip made landfall on southern Japan on October 19, and became an extratropical cyclone shortly thereafter. U.S. Air Force Reconnaissance flew into the typhoon for 60 missions, making Tip one of the most closely observed tropical cyclones. Rainfall from the typhoon breached a flood-retaining wall at a United States Marine Corps training camp in the Kanagawa Prefecture of Japan, leading to a fire which killed 13 Marines and injured 68. Elsewhere in the country, the typhoon led to widespread flooding and 42 deaths, and offshore shipwrecks left 44 killed or missing. (more...)

Welcome to the 2012 WikiCup
Hello, and welcome to the 2012 WikiCup! The competition officially begins at the start of 2012 (UTC) after which time you may begin to claim points. Your submission page, where you must note any content for which you wish to claim points, can be found here, and formatting instructions can be found in hidden comments on the page. A bot will then update the main table, which can be seen on the WikiCup page. The full rules for what will and will not be awarded points can be found at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring. There's also a section on that page listing the changes that have been made to the rules this year, so that experienced participants can get up-to-date in a few seconds. One point of which we must remind everyone; you may only claim points for content upon which you have done significant work, and which you have nominated, in 2012. For instance, articles written or good article reviews started in 2011 are not eligible for points.
This round will last until late February, and signups will remain open until the middle of February. If you know of anyone who may like to take part, please let them know about the comeptition; the more the merrier! At the end of this round, the top 64 scorers will progress to the next round, where their scores will reset, and they will be split into pools. Note that, by default, you have been added to our newsletter list; we will be in contact at the end of every month with news. You're welcome to remove yourself from this list if you do not wish to hear from us. Conversely, those interested in following the competition are more than welcome to add themselves to the list. Please direct any questions towards the judges, or on the WikiCup talk page. Good luck! J Milburn (talk) and The ed17 (talk) 17:54, 31 December 2011 (UTC)

WikiCup 2012 January newsletter
WikiCup 2012 is off to a flying start. At the time of writing, we have 112 contestants; comparable to last year, but slightly fewer than 2010. Signups will remain open for another week, after which time they will be closed for this year. Our currrent far-away leader is Grapple X (submissions), due mostly to his work on a slew of good articles about The X-Files; there remain many such articles waiting to be reviewed at good article candidates. Second place is currently held by Ruby2010 (submissions), whose points come mostly from good articles about television episodes, although good article reviews, did you knows and an article about a baroness round out the score. In third place is Jivesh boodhun (submissions), who has scored 200 points for his work on a single featured article, as well as points for work on others, mostly in the area of pop music. In all, nine users have 100 or more points. However, at the other end of the scale, there are still dozens of participants who are yet to score. Please remember to update your submission pages promptly!
The 64 highest scoring participants will advance to round 2 in a month's time. There, they will be split into eight random groups of eight. The score needed to reach the next round is not at all clear; last year, 8 points guaranteed a place. The year before, 20.
A few participants and their work warrant a mention for achieving "firsts" in this competition.
- 12george1 (submissions) was the first to score, with his good article review of Illinois v. McArthur.
- 12george1 (submissions) was also the first to score points for an article, thanks to his work on Hurricane Debby (1982)- now a good article. Tropical storms have featured heavily in the Cup, and good articles currently have a relatively fast turnaround time for reviews.
- Sp33dyphil (submissions) was the first to score points for a did you know, with Russian submarine K-114 Tula. Military history is another subject which has seen a lot of Cup activity.
- Sp33dyphil (submissions) is also the first person to successfully claim bonus points. Terminator 2: Judgment Day is now a good article, and was eligible for bonus points because the subject was covered on more than 20 other Wikipedias at the start of the competition. It is fantastic to see bonus points being claimed so early!
- Speciate (submissions) was the first to score points for an In the News entry, with Paedophryne amauensis. The lead image from the article was also used on the main page for a time, and it's certainly eye-catching!
- Jivesh boodhun (submissions) was the first to score points for a featured article, and is, at the moment, the only competitor to claim for one. The article, "Halo" (Beyoncé Knowles song), was also worth double points because of its wide coverage. While this is an article that Jivesh and others have worked on for some time, it is undeniable that he has put considerable work into it this year, pushing it over the edge.
We are yet to see any featured lists, featured topics or good topics, but this is unsurprising; firstly, the nomination processes with each of these can take some time, and, secondly, it can take a considerable amount of time to work content to this level. In a similar vein, we have seen only one featured article. The requirement that content must have been worked on this year to be eligible means that we did not expect to see these at the start of the competition. No points have been claimed for featured portals or pictures, but these are not content types which are often claimed; the former has never made a big impact on the WikiCup, while the latter has not done so since 2009's competition.
A quick rules clarification before the regular notices: If you are concerned that another user is claiming points inappropriately, please contact a judge to take a look at the article. Competitors policing one another can create a bad atmosphere, and may lead to inconsistencies and mistakes. Rest assured that we, the judges, are making an effort to check submissions, but it is possible that we will miss something. On a loosely related note: If you are concerned that your nomination, be it at good article candidates, a featured process or anywhere else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Good luck! Main page appearance: New York State Route 28
This is a note to let the main editors of New York State Route 28 know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on February 19, 2012. You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/February 19, 2012.
New York State Route 28 is a state highway extending for 281.69 miles (453.34 km) in the shape of a "C" between the Hudson Valley city of Kingston and southern Warren County in the U.S. state of New York. Along the way, it intersects several major routes, including Interstate 88 (I-88), U.S. Route 20 (US 20), and the New York State Thruway twice. The southern terminus of NY 28 is at NY 32 in Kingston and the northern terminus is US 9 in Warrensburg. NY 28 was originally assigned in 1924 to an alignment extending from Colliersville in the south to Utica in the north via Ilion. From Colliersville to Cooperstown, the highway followed its current routing (excluding minor realignments); north of Cooperstown, NY 28 was routed along several state highways that now have other designations. The route was extended south to Kingston and north to Warrensburg as part of the 1930 renumbering of state highways in New York. At the same time, Route 28 was realigned between Cooperstown and Mohawk to follow its modern routing. (more...)

AfD and PROD notifications
Hi Juliancolton,
Back in November, you got either an AfD or PROD notification, which was part of the template testing project's experiments. If you could go here and leave us some feedback about what you think about the new versions of the templates we tested (there are links to the templates), that would be very useful. (You can also email me at mpinchukwikimedia.org if you want.) Thanks! Maryana (WMF) (talk) 22:25, 17 February 2012 (UTC)
GOCE March copy edit drive
Invitation from the Guild of Copy Editors
The Guild of Copy Editors invites you to participate in their March 2012 Backlog elimination drive, a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy edit backlog. The drive begins on March 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and ends on March 31 at 23:59 (UTC). Our goal for the drive will be to eliminate the remaining 2010 articles from the queue. Barnstars will be awarded to anyone who copy edits more than 4,000 words, and special awards will be given to the top 5 in the following categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", and "Number of articles of over 5,000 words". We hope to see you there! – Your drive coordinators: Dank, Diannaa, Stfg, and Coordinator emeritus SMasters. 19:41, 20 February 2012 (UTC) >>> Sign up now <<<

WikiCup 2012 February newsletter
Round 1 is already over! The 64 highest scorers have progressed to round 2. Our highest scorer was Grapple X (submissions), again thanks mostly to a swathe of good articles on The X-Files. In second place was Tigerboy1966 (submissions), thanks an impressive list of did you knows about racehorses. Both scored over 400 points. Following behind with over 300 points were Ruby2010 (submissions), Cwmhiraeth (submissions), Miyagawa (submissions) and Casliber (submissions). February also saw the competition's first featured list: List of colleges and universities in North Dakota, from Ruby2010 (submissions). At the other end of the scale, 11 points was enough to secure a place in this round, and some contestants with 10 points made it into the round on a tiebreaker. This is higher than the 8 points that were needed last year, but lower than the 20 points required the year before. The number of points required to progress to round 3 will be significantly higher.
The remaining contestants have been split into 8 pools of 8, named A through H. Round two will finish in two months time on 28 April, when the two highest scorers in each pool, as well as the next 16 highest scorers, will progress to round 3. The pools were entirely random, so while some pools may end up being more competitive than others, this is by chance rather than design.
The judges would like to point out two quick rules reminders. First, any content promoted during the interim period (that is, on or after 27 February) is eligible for points in round 2. Second, any content worked on significantly this year is eligible for points if promoted in this round. On a related note, if you are concerned that your nomination, be it at good article candidates, a featured process or anywhere else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which would otherwise be caused by the Cup. Hi Julian, I hope all is okay. You may have noticed over the past few days (5–7 March) that the MOTD that you link to on your user page has simply displayed a red link. This is due to the fact that not enough people are reviewing pending MOTDs here. Any help would be appreciated! –pjoef (talk • contribs) 11:05, 7 March 2012 (UTC)

- Thanks, but I found it on google pretty easily; it provided a lot of interesting info on the topic, so it wasn't a huge setback. :) Thanks again for the response and help, and I certainly will! Juliancolton (talk) 00:48, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
Administator
Could you nominate me on Wikipedia:Requests for Adminship, please. I have made some edits, have been on here a while and I want to help vandalism myself. ~ ⇒TomTomN00 @ 19:35, 11 March 2012 (UTC)
- While Julian is free to nominate you, I would strongly counsel you to withdraw this request of him. Even if he were to nominate you, an RFA would fail as you are too inexperienced and your recent edits show a high degree of immaturity and desire to obtain offices. You are free to ignore this advice, but you must slow down, contribute content, learn the policies of the project and how it operates, and stop requesting new userrights and offices so quickly, in order to mature as an editor. Page move
Hey Juliancolton, I need you to move User:12george1/Tropical Storm Fran (1984) to Tropical Storm Fran (1984). After that, can you delete Tropical Storm Fran (1983) because the storm did not happen in 1983 (it was a copy and paste move by JG). Thank you!--12george1 (talk) 01:03, 12 March 2012 (UTC)
