Meet-up: Editors from Malaysia

Hello! You might or might not have seen me around here as I've not been active in Wikipedia the past few months. Before leaving for NS, it was my intention to form a Malaysian user group. I'm still very much interested in forming the group. However, before forming the group, I would love to organize a meet-up between editors of the Malaysian editing community to test the waters and hear what you guys might have to say. To my knowledge, there has not been a Wikipedia meet-up in this country before. I don't mind organizing the meet-up but need to know if anyone is interested in joining the meet-up. So... please reply and let me know if you would be interested in joining a meet-up and your ideas/thoughts about a user group. Thank you.

Looking forward to hearing from you, Bejinhantalks 12:30, 15 December 2012 (UTC) (Message delivered by EdwardsBot (talk) 12:30, 15 December 2012 (UTC))

Quinming shanghe

Hello Mr. Emanuel, I was wondering if you could help me identify a scroll which I bought in an auction in London. It is Quinming shanghe made of silk with fabric borders and paper on the back. The scroll has two stamps at the beginning. One of the stamps is Oval shaped and the other is square. There is also a square stamp at the end of the scroll. I would be grateful to you if you could give me some indication as to how much, approximately, this scroll would be worth. Important request to translate article from eng-chin

Hello there, There is a very important article that is in English but not in Chinese. It's called Barefoot lawyers http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barefoot_lawyer. They are self-taught people who help protect the rights of citizens in China. This would be a very important article for chinese people to read in their native language not in one there not familiar with. Would you consider helping out to translate the article. I am also asking 8 other translators with near native english and native chinese to help out. So if you all agree you would have 8 helpers. What do you think? Assistance regarding a Singaporean news article

Hello Joshua, I'm writing an article about Gerry Saurer, an Austrian coach of the Kenya national football team. For some reason there is an article about him in Berita Harian about him resigning (if Google Translator is right). Part of the text of the news article can be found at newspapers.nl.sg (Jurulatih dipecat p. 15), but a few words a missing. The full text can be only viewed from the multimedia stations at NLB Libraries (according to this site). Would you be so kind to look up the missing part and/or translate that short article? I'd be very grateful. ElRaki (talk) 13:45, 20 December 2013 (UTC)

Hi ElRaki, I am sorry that I am away from Singapore at the moment. However, I can give you a rough translation of the short paragraph.

Coach fired [Bfp. ftr J] NAIROBI The Kenya Football Federation had fired coach Gerry Saurer, who is an Austrian, following the country's defeat in the African Cup of Nations in Senegal [-ttenan] ago. S Mohamed Heri, who [pinem] helped Kenya into the semifinals of the competition in 1990, had been appointed again as national coach

Hope this helps.--Joshua Say "hi" to me!What I've done? 16:34, 20 December 2013 (UTC)

British National (Overseas)

Joshua, with regrets, I have had to undo your revision of good faith. "British National (Overseas) are not treated by law as aliens to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland", with exact wordings, originates from the 1981 Nationality Act. So are holders of the British National (Overseas) passports eligible to join HM Civil Service. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pageswriter (talkcontribs) 23:18, 4 February 2015 (UTC)

Erm... I didn't make the edit in question. It was made by an IP user after me (see diff). I have made your intended change at that page. Next time, you may want to use the "show preview" and "show changes" buttons before saving. When undoing non-trivial edits, it is preferable to replace the default edit summary and explain what you are doing (like what I did on my edit to that page). Kudos for explaining here though; but please remember to sign your post on talk pages. --Joshua Say "hi" to me!What I've done? 00:59, 5 February 2015 (UTC)

Western Sahara in List of country calling codes

Hi,

I removed the Flag of Polisario from the List of country calling codes because the status of Western Sahara is not defined and the territory de jure does not belong neither to Polisario nor to Morocco. The neutral form is to put the name of the territory only. Wimmiden (talk) 11:26, 6 February 2015 (UTC)

I understand your concerns, but in that article everyone (sovereign states, states with limited recognition or dependencies) gets their flag. For Western Sahara, as it is a separate entity from Morocco and claimed by the Polisario as the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, we use the flag of the claimed state to distinguish it from Morocco. However, since the use of flag icons is not crucial to the article (and probably not in line with MOS:ICON), I think it is best to suggest the removal of all flags at the talk page of the article.--Joshua Say "hi" to me!What I've done? 11:58, 6 February 2015 (UTC)
There is no rule stating the use of the flag of the claimed state. Moreover it is impartial. A neutral name is more suitable. Wimmiden (talk) 16:15, 10 February 2015 (UTC)
There are other claimed states in the list (Abkhazia, Nagorno-Karabakh, Northern Cyprus etc) and they get their flags too. The Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic actually has more international recognition than the ones I just mentioned. Anyway, another editor also disagreed with your edit and had reverted your reversion twice already. I strongly suggest that you start a discussion at the talk page of the article before making the same change again. From your contributions, you seem very interested with this Western Sahara flag issue. The editor mentioned Template talk:Country data Western Sahara in his/her edit summary; that is a good page to check out for your case. Apparently this is a long-running issue on Wikipedia.--Joshua Talk to me What I've done? 17:09, 10 February 2015 (UTC)

You incorrectly reverted an edit I made to NANP

Hi Joshua, yesterday you incorrectly reverted an edit I made correcting an error in the article NANP. You should have contacted me first, because the rationale was included in the edit comments. Etiquette aside, let me direct you to regulation and Telecommunications_Act_of_1996. The wikipedia definition of 'regulation' are rules created to shape conduct that is a byproduct of imperfection. In 1996, the ILEC's controlled last mile service across the United States. The aim of Title I and the act as a whole was to create competition, but because the ILEC's controlled the last mile there was no way for this competition to take place - no new entrants would be able to enter the market, because they could not secure the capital required to build out a last mile network to homes that were already served by an ILEC. The TCA created a rule that forced ILEC to sell service to CLEC's at wholesale rates; this rule allowed for CLEC's to use ILEC lines to provide last mile service.

The section in the NANP article refers to the excess consumption of numbers due to a proliferation of entrants into the market. There *would be* no new entrants into the market without the new regulations forcing ILEC's to resell service. I am going to add my corrections back in. Please do not revert them again. Sahrin (talk) 19:39, 13 March 2015 (UTC)

Firstly, Wikipedia encourages us to be bold, so I boldly reverted your edits. A key word in the Telecommunications Act of 1996 is deregulation. If I understand correctly, it deregulates the market by regulating the existing carriers, to remove barriers to allow new entrants (so, to deregulate one has to regulate; yeah, figure that out). So it is deregulation for the new entrants at the expense of more regulations for the ILEC. I won't be reverting your edits again (3RR aside), but the current wording seems confusing. "Telecom regulation of local telephone service in the United States beginning in the early to mid-1990s" sounds like it was unregulated before that.--Joshua Talk to me What I've done? 03:19, 14 March 2015 (UTC)
