Adding Indic text
[edit]Hello Jon,
You might want to take a look at WP:INDIC for information on Indic texts. Under the section "Inputting Indic Text", it tells you how to go about adding texts for different languages (on different OSes). This is probably what you want to look at. Otherwise, you can go to the specific language page and look up the unicode values for the specific characters you wish to input. The latter method is more cumbersome, so you probably want to look at the information in WP:INDIC. Hope this helps you! If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to ask. And welcome to Wikipedia! --vi5in[talk] 19:35, 9 April 2007 (UTC)
- I'm not sure I understand your question exactly; do you mean the Hindi Wikipedia? That's a wikipedia that's written entire in Hindi. I guess I'm not sure what you meant by "load a particular language". --vi5in[talk] 19:26, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
- Jon, I believe the information you are seeking is further down the page that vi5in sent you. It depends what operating system you are using, Window 3.1 thru NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Macintosh; find your OS and follow those instructions to enable your computer to enter Devanāgarī script. [edit]- Hello Jon Ascton, do you need help with something? --KFP (talk | contribs) 14:56, 12 April 2007 (UTC)
- Hi. To put an image on your user page, you have to upload the image via Special:Upload and release it under a free license. If you own the rights to the image, you can select a free license of your choosing from the "Licensing" drop-down list. Wikipedia uses the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL), and there are some other compatible licenses. See Wikipedia:Uploading images for more info and if you have further questions, feel free to ask me on my talk page. --KFP (talk | contribs) 15:56, 6 May 2007 (UTC)
Battle at Princeton
[edit]Hello - I haven't found an image of the original work by John Trumbull, although there is a large collection of Trumbull's work at the Yale University Art Gallery. The image that is found everywhere appears to be in the New York Public Library and is an engraving of Trumbull's work by John Rogers. The title of the painting/engraving is "Battle at Princeton". Hope this helps. Rmasbury 13:57, 21 May 2007 (UTC)

hi
[edit]Hi, It is a well known fact that the Calcutta "riots" were started by "Direct Action" of Suharwardy. Concelling this fact, and 'secularising' this disaster by throwing the allegation at 'all' communities is something absurd and unjustifiable like Holocaust Denial. It is not going to help anyone (not even your muslim "brothers"). Hey Ram was an incrediblly daring and to-the-point thing, an extremly rare piece of work in our shamelessly secular society. The least we can do is to tell world what this movie meant. (Such films are not made everyday because of censor.)However if your POV is too dear to you you can keep it your way. You can even put 100% blame on the hindus, if you think that will bring communal harmony.
- Comment – Hey Jon Ascton talk the one thing I can say about Wikipedia is that a majority of the Editors are more than willing, as you put it to take that ; “..incredibly daring and to-the-point thing” article and improve upon it. However, the one thing that will not be tolerate, is an individual pushing her/his WP:POV point of view to the extent that it disallows other individuals, groups or other affected parties to express their thoughts. In the mean time, as an individual, with his or her own believes, “Happy Holidays". Shoessss | Chat 20:46, 24 December 2007 (UTC)

Own picture
[edit]Hi Jon, uploading your own pic for use on your userpage is fine, as long as it is copyright-free and you're happy that other people can take or alter the image. It's an explicit exception to the general rule that images must be "encyclopedic"
Upload your pic at Commons, the central library for all Wikimedia projects, and put "[[Category:Wikipedians]]" at the bottom. You can call the pic into your userpage in exactly the same way as before, and it'll be good practice for any more encyclopedic pics you want to upload. The guidance at Commons is pretty good, but if you have any probs or queries, I'm happy to help. Best, JackyR | Talk 18:40, 26 December 2007 (UTC)
Reply to your query
[edit]Hi, this is in reply to your query about Nihang and Akali. The Akali word when used in the form of an adjective refers to somebody/something that is "pertaining to Akaal or the supreme power" or in simple words "Divine". In the form of a Noun it refers to somebody who is:-
- An admirer and follower of Akaal ie. the admirer and follower of Supreme Power.
- Khalsa of waheguru.
- this word is also used for Nihangs
Some of the qualities of an Akali human are that the person should be:-
- Admirer and follower of the "Supreme Power" and its laws.
- Though present in the material world, is unique and is not attached too much to that material world.
- Earns his/her bread by hard work and considers begging as "haraam" (highly illegitimate).
- Considers happiness/good-times and sorrow/bad-times as both the same under the divine law and part of day to day life. (Particularly, this is in reference to Guru Nanak's philosophy in AGGS where he mentions that "dukh" and "sukh" both have to be faced in this world and asking for only "sukhs" from the Supreme Power is a futile effort and is bound to be rejected.)
- A person who selflessly works for social cause and protects the Gurdwara's and is always conscious and ready for the struggle for the righteous cause.
- A person who does not perform the "pooja" of any other "devi" or "devs" but is only the follower and believer of "One Supreme" Akaal and abides by the tenth Sikh guru Gobind Singh
There is a subtle difference between the usage of the words Nihung and Akali. Nihung word in common day to day language has become synonymous with all the people who are born in the Nihung familes. However, the acts of such a person may disqualify him/her from being called an Akali. Similarly, in common day to day language the people of Punjab and neighboring states have begun to call the politicians of the "Akali Dal" political party as "Akali's", however in literary sense they should not be called so.
Hope the above helps, let me know if you have further questions. ---- A. S. AulakhTalk 20:12, 1 January 2008 (UTC)

Your question
[edit]If you want to upload a picture of a living person, than you are going to have trouble having a non-free image accepted, since the general policy is that only free pictures of living people are acceptable (on the rather ludicrous grounds that since the person is still alive it should be possible to get a non-copyrighted picture of them). You could try uploading it and make an argument for it, but almost certainly someone will come along and remove it, so it's generally not worth the trouble to try. You could look in Wikipedia Commons to see if there's a free picture there of your subject http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/ , or check Flickr and see if there's a picture there that's properly licensed.
If your subject is deceased, then you've got a better chance of having a non-free picture used, for instance in the infobox, or as an illustration of something discussed in the article. (Generally, the more connected to the text of the article, the less hassle you will get over a non-free image, but even with the most relevant images, there will be people -- those who disapprove of non-free images under any circumstances -- who will bend over backwards to find a reason to delete your image.)
My advice would be to step lightly, provide as much documentation (i.e. Fair-Use Rationale, source, description) as you possibly can, be quick to add more if an image is challenged, and try your best to keep an even temperment. The tools, and to some extent the rules, are in the favor of those who want to delete your image, so you have to be light on your feet and float like a butterfly. [edit]I see no huge problem in removing the references to religion in the above article. The person's religion seems relatively unimportant in this case, though the Sikh teachings on reincarnation may be what is contributing to her interest in the subject. [edit]Hi Jon Ascton. As per Wikipedia:Biographies of living people, articles much not seem critical or promotional of the subject. The article should relay what third party reliable sources have written about the subject. I've been involved in trying to ensure that critique is noteworthy and that it doesn't overwhelm the section, or unduly favour one perspective. This can be a tricky balance to maintain, so if you can suggest any improvements in that regard then that would be quite useful. Regards, ITAQALLAH 22:07, 13 February 2009 (UTC)

- Since I had my answer to your comment on my page finished already I'll post it here, as an explanation: When templates are changed, it takes MediaWiki a while to apply these changes to all pages where it is used. That job queue is behaving a bit strange lately, so it takes unusually long. Purging those pages helps, which I'd only done for Jim Tucker. I've purged them all now, so they should all work as expected.

Orphaned non-free media (File:Al Pacino Mugshot.JPG)
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:Al Pacino Mugshot.JPG. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Speedy deletion of Sahar Sarid
[edit]A tag has been placed on Sahar Sarid requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}}
to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. Replaceable fair use Image:KoenraadElst.JPG
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:KoenraadElst.JPG. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the media description page and edit it to add
{{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}
, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template. - On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. — neuro(talk)(review) 22:30, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

Rajneeshee-related booking photos
[edit]There's several debates over the use of "mugshots" in biographies on WP going on now, and one that you added is orphaned now. While I think there is a good case for including the photo, building consensus will be difficult.
However, from the discussion at WT:BLP#Mugshots_and_BLP ( search for "bioterror" ), the opposing editors may be OK with using it as a non-lead image in 1984 Rajneeshee bioterror attack. But remember there were several arrested, so the article shouldn't show the booking photo for only one person. Squidfryerchef (talk) 13:36, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

[edit]Hi, I saw Tarc erasing your comment on the Public Image of Barack Obama talk page. My experience has been that when a user is erased like this, he's lead to believe he's being censored so I thought I'd explain what Tarc hasn't said.
General statements about the overall tone or viewpoint of an article aren't usually useful to improving it and so they tend to get dismissed as WP:SOAPboxing. If you have a concern over a particular issue being missed (because it's unfavorable to Obama) or being needlessly included (because it's favorable to Obama), I'd admonish you to try that angle instead, showing sources that demonstrate the issue. Attacking the general tone of the page because it's written by Obama lovers only serves to put editors on the defensive and goes nowhere toward addressing constructive improvements.--Louiedog (talk) 17:30, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

AfD nomination of Jim Tucker
[edit]An editor has nominated one or more articles which you have created or worked on, for deletion. The nominated article is Jim Tucker. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also Wikipedia:Notability and "What Wikipedia is not").
Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion(s) by adding your comments to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Jim Tucker. Please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).
You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate.

I was actually wanting to get a mugshot of Osho and uploaded it but I'm trying to get a free license for it because that was one of the objections by Off2riorob. Osho has a significant arrest/controversy section and the mugshot should be there to go with that section. You seem to know a thing or two about Laser pointers. Please tell me can Green pointers blast baloons or burn paper etc. I read they do, but practicaly they don't seem to...kindly reply on my talk page
Jon Ascton (talk) 14:46, 4 December 2009 (UTC)
- I would be very surprised if a green laser[1] pointer that is rated "eye safe" (Class 2) could cause the effects on paper or balloons you mention. This report deals with the safety situation and notes that lasers over 0.5 W output (Class 4) do pose a burning hazard. Unfortunately I have no experience to answer your question better. I have only experienced being flashed once accidentally by a (red) pointer during a lecture, with no ill effect. Cuddlyable3 (talk) 15:45, 5 December 2009 (UTC)

- I really don't mind it that you replaced my infobox image of Will Cuppy's signature with an edited version of your own -- the quality is all right from a display standpoint -- but I think that the version I used is better in that the printed type in the background can be used to authenticate the signature as having appeared on a standard WWI-era U.S. draft registration form. (Sometimes "cleaning up" an image means the loss of useful information.) In any case, you need to deal with the "speedy delete" tag on your version. I had absolutely nothing to do with that. Thanks for letting me know about your edit. -- Cuppysfriend (talk) 19:40, 13 February 2010 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of Barbara Hannah
[edit]A tag has been placed on Barbara Hannah requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. You may also wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}}
to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Speedy deletion declined: Mangal Dhillon
[edit]Hello Jon Ascton. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Mangal Dhillon, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: The article makes a credible assertion of importance or significance, sufficient to pass A7. Thank you. (talk→ BWilkins ←track) 18:47, 14 February 2010 (UTC)
- I considered it, read the sources there, did a quick Google search, and determined that it met the qualifications. I would also ask in the future that you be a little more polite in your CSD-tagging. Accusations that it was self-written, and some of your WP:SOAP statements are a little contrary to WP:AGF. If you feel it should be deleted, then nominate it for WP:AFD. (talk→ BWilkins ←track) 19:01, 14 February 2010 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use File:Satwant.gif
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:Satwant.gif.
{{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}
, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
Thank you. Rettetast (talk) 21:48, 27 February 2010 (UTC)

- Also Sleep paralysis and Night terror. From "sleep paralysis" article:
In addition, the paralysis state may be accompanied by terrifying hallucinations (hypnopompic or hypnagogic) and an acute sense of danger.[8] Sleep paralysis is particularly frightening to the individual because of the vividness of such hallucinations.[7] The hallucinatory element to sleep paralysis makes it even more likely that someone will interpret the experience as a dream, since completely fanciful, or dream-like, objects (often described as looking distinctly demonic by those who experience the paralysis)[citation needed] may appear in the room alongside one's normal vision. Some scientists have proposed this condition as an explanation for alien abductions and ghostly encounters. This description seems to match your situation.
Do you actually see it? Can you describe it? Maybe you should try to find a way to get a picture/video of it. Does this happens regularly?--151.51.45.45 (talk) 20:13, 25 March 2010 (UTC)

I find my hypnogogic entities (usually ghosts, people or spiders) act nicer if I talk to them, and often go away if I ask them if they're real. --203.202.43.54 (talk) 06:48, 26 March 2010 (UTC)
- The good folks at the Reference Desk are not permitted to provide any medical advice at all. Advice and commentary from random people on the internet is not a substitute for medical/psychological/psychiatric help if something is happening which troubles you. Your primary physician would be the first person to see if such experiences trouble you. (Original research) It is certainly alarming if one has the sensation that there is some intruder and one is unable to get up and respond appropriately. This may occur (very rarely) in the sleep of anyone. There is motor inhibition which normally prevents people from running around responding to dream experiences, for obvious reasons. This system can sometimes get a bit out of order, so that one is aware of the inability to move. Another out of order condition can lead to sleepwalking. Edison (talk) 05:23, 26 March 2010 (UTC)
- once when I was 14 or so I had a very convincing moment where I could have sworn that a coven of witches were surrounding my bed chanting something, while I was completely unable to move. snapped out of it in a bit, but it gave me the complete and total willies for a day or two. This happens (as best I understand the psychology) when you wake up quickly but incompletely: body movement is still suppressed as in sleep, the semi-awake mind tries to move, can't, and quickly confabulates a dream-like sequence to explain your inability to move. what it dreams up (like any dream) is a codified representation of your current anxieties, but without a much longer discussion of the experience I couldn't say what those are. Suffice it to say it's not abnormal unless it's consistent and recurring over a fairly long period of time (in which case you should consult a therapist).
- incidentally, deep breathing will usually dispel it quickly, if you're present enough to remember. the extra oxygen wakes up both the body and mind. --Ludwigs2 04:34, 27 March 2010 (UTC)

Color (Laser Printer)
[edit]Are the color printers like this any good ? How are their results ? Are they economical enough to use ? Is the quality like standard color magazines we see or inferior ? Jon Ascton (talk) 20:44, 16 June 2010 (UTC)
The specs for the indicated printer don't seem that great. If you want a printer which produces magazine-quality color prints yet is pretty economical, you should be looking at certain inkjet printers rather than laser printers. I would personally recommend the Hewlett-Packard Officejet Pro 8500 All-in-One A909b Printer (CB862A). I bought mine for less than US$400.Rocketshiporion (talk) 02:44, 17 June 2010 (UTC)
- Magazines use offset printing. Offset printing is a wonderful technology -- both cheap per copy and high quality. But, as you can see from the picture in the entry I linked to, offset printing presses aren't available to you and me.
- The best color prints you and I can get are printed by inkjet printers. The dye-based inks that come with most inkjets blend colors well, but they aren't as great at producing sharp, clear text. Laser printers excel at printing precise shapes (e.g., text). The best tradeoff I've found is the Canon Pixma iP4700. It has five ink cartridges inside:
- cyan (dye based),
- magenta (dye based),
- yellow (dye based),
- black (dye based), and
- black (pigment based).
- So, not only do the photos look great, but it also prints very sharp text, because it uses a pigment-based ink for text. You can buy one for only $50 online. Plus, the ink isn't very expensive, because the printheads are separate from the ink cartridges in the Pixma. As you may have guessed, it's what I use. But no matter what printer you use, don't try to save money on paper. You won't get good results unless you use high-quality paper.
- On another note, I'm not a big fan of HP printers, because they have a tendency to jam. I'm a computer repairman, so I've actually had some calls to remove jams from the HP OfficeJet 8500 mentioned above. Laser printers are also high maintenance. You have to clean out a laser printer each time you replace the toner, or the rollers will start to foul your paper.--Best Dog Ever (talk) 03:25, 17 June 2010 (UTC)
Digital Camera
[edit]If one wants to buy a digital camera, how much mega-pixel is ideal ? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jon Ascton (talk • contribs)
- If you just want to view images on your computer, 2 or 3 megapixels is fine. If you want to generate large images for printing or reproduction in magazines, then you need as high as possible. ~Amatulić (talk) 04:55, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
- The chances are that any camera currently on the market will have more pixels than you need. See The Megapixel Myth (compare megahertz myth). There are a lot of other features that differentiate point-and-shoot cameras. For example, some do better in low-light conditions than others; some have better flash illumination; some have optical viewfinders while others don't; some let you control the exposure time and aperture, while others don't; some can take wider angle photos than others; some have tiltable LCD screens; some have better lenses, and some just plain take better looking pictures. Sites like dpreview.com can help you compare picture quality and features of different models. -- BenRG (talk) 05:17, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
- Agree with the others, megapixels are largely irrelevant over 8-10MP unless you're wanting to make large scale prints of your photographs (I'm talking exhibition-size prints). Most cameras on the market offer this amount of megapixels because it sounds impressive even if you just want to do some photos at a friend's wedding. There are many other factors that are more important, especially with single lens reflex (SLR) cameras, most importantly of which are the speed of the lenses/apertures, ISO, noise reduction etc. Regards, --—Cyclonenim | Chat 10:01, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
- I'll second the above, except I'll suggest that the "largely irrelevant" threshold is even lower. 5-6 MP, on a camera with a good lens, is more than sufficient for general use. I've blown up pictures from my 6 MP camera to 30"x20" with excellent results. If you're not going to print stuff larger than 8"x10", you can go even lower -- 3-4 MP would be fine. And as Cyclonenim noted, at this point, every new camera with a decent lens will be at this point or higher. You might want to check various consumer magazines; I'd expect that Consumer Reports (among others) has done several digital camera evaluations. — Lomn 13:10, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
- You want to leave some room for people to crop and use the so called "Digital zoom". APL (talk) 14:21, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
- However, CCD chips come in limited sizes. Within a given class of cameras, more pixels usually means smaller pixels, which means more thermal noise. So you may get a higher nominal resolution, but more details will be lost in the noise, and the image will look washed-out. 5 megapixels used to be the sweet spot when I looked a while back. --Stephan Schulz (talk) 14:58, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

- Nobody has mentioned battery life! This is one of the the most differentiating parameters left between otherwise "equivalent" performance cameras. If this factor is important, consider the negative impact of a larger sensor, LCD screen, and more powerful processor that often go along with "high-end" cameras. This is a parameter which can vary widely between different vendors. Nimur (talk) 14:58, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

Cyclopedia of Magic
[edit]Nope, I'm afraid not.
Specifically, I've got the "Cyclopedia of Magic, edited by Henry Hay". It's a handy resource for looking up things to do with stage magic, however, it makes me remember how difficult print references can be to use. Wikipedia has spoiled me! Sometimes it's tough to look up a trick if you don't know the name that magicians refer to it by.
Anyway, I'm not a magician, so take my recommendation with a grain of salt. I picked it up used at Abe Books, after I noticed it was used as a reference in several of Wikipedia's magic articles. APL (talk) 20:39, 10 July 2010 (UTC)

Re: Michael Segedy
[edit]I looked over Wikipedia:Notability (books) and I don't see how Segedy's book, Hampton Road, is notable per our guidelines. I'll go through those criteria here:
- I can't find any third party published works through either Google News or Google Books. The only result under Google Books is the book itself.
- If the book had won even a minor literary award, I would expect the author to have put it in his own article but he didn't. And again, I can find no mention of any award for this book.
- It hasn't been made into a film, etc.
- Without any awards or anything of note, it's unlikely that it's taught anywhere.
- The AFD for the author isn't going well for him, so without the author being notable, the book fails here.
So, in the end, I'd have to say that the book isn't notable either. Dismas|(talk) 02:59, 12 July 2010 (UTC)
- After a quick search, it seems like it should be notable enough for an article. Just a few links for you: This article from The Hindu uses it as the basis for an article. And then there's this from Time. Additionally, it's part of the University of Michigan Press. So, it would seem that they use it for their curriculum. It's up to you whether you want to write the article but I'd say it's probably notable. That said, books or Indian culture aren't really my specialty. Dismas|(talk) 09:16, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

Re: Browser preferences
[edit]I use Safari partly because my own computers are Apples and partly because I generally dislike Microsoft products. I've never liked anything that Microsoft has put out. At work, where I have to use Windows, I use Firefox. I haven't really used Safari on a Windows machine, so I can't say whether I like it or not. I've used Firefox on Windows because it is the most advanced browser for Windows that isn't IE. Additionally, there are a few work related reasons why we need to use Firefox, so Safari isn't an option. The things that we do at work that require Firefox simply don't work under IE.
Another reason that I don't like IE/Microsoft is that they seem to be under the impression that they can decide the way things should be done and everyone else should just follow along with that. One loose example of this is IE's use of the term "Favorites". Everyone else calls the Bookmarks but for some reason IE is different. There's no point. Why not just call them what everyone else calls them, Bookmarks! Then there are tabs. Firefox and the rest have had tabs for years before IE ever did. Why?! I can't count the number of people who I've had to teach about tabs here at work simply because they use IE at home and had never heard of tabs.
I could go on but I'm starting to ranting. Does this answer your question? Dismas|(talk) 02:17, 4 August 2010 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use File:Bookcoverofcarrnovel.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:Bookcoverofcarrnovel.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the media description page and edit it to add
{{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}
, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
Thank you. Eeekster (talk) 02:13, 7 August 2010 (UTC)
Agatha Awards
[edit]Although mentioning her history of anti-Semitism would be appropriate in the article on Ms Christie herself, it is not necessary in the article on the Awards.

What do you think of this article now. I have completely re-written it starting from August of this year. I especially find it interesting the list of ingredients that can be put into a pomander. I can e-mail you with further details IF you feel you need additional on this or you can e-mail me with questions pertaining to whatever you might be curious about. I have written several articles lately pertaining to perfume and aromatic spirits. I find it totally fasinating, especially that of how pomander got its name pertaining to ambergris. --Doug Coldwell talk 23:13, 4 September 2010 (UTC)
- Ambergris means Amber Gray and is French. Many pomanders made in medieval times used this ingredient. It was very expensive. They have since switched to a synthetic in modern times. Fascinating, don't you agree.--Doug Coldwell talk 12:35, 5 September 2010 (UTC)
- FYI, my article on toilet water came up today as a DYK. The article I followed up next on perfume cushion I am even more proud of. I have submitted it for a possible DYK.--Doug Coldwell talk 12:55, 5 September 2010 (UTC)
- In a book I have here on my desk hints & pinches by John T. Walter (Hill Steet Press, 2002, ISBN 1892514982) it says: The English name "pomander" is a transliteration of the French name for them, "pomme de ambre" (amber apple), since the most common pomander on the continent (I assume Europe), in ancient times, was an apple stuck with spices and rolled in powered ambergris as a preservative. In the Middle Ages pomanders went in every linen or clothes cupboard, were as common as aspirin tablets today. That's what it says, word for word.--Doug Coldwell talk 14:16, 5 September 2010 (UTC)
- Here is a website that explains how to make a pomander. It also says that originally, cloves were stuck into an apple and it was rolled in ambergris to preserve the scent. I believe the apple (or orange) was let to dry first.

Lenter
[edit]Jon, I've not yet tracked down the etymology of lenter, but I wanted to be sure that I'm on the right track. Is this a word that appears frequently in Indian English discourse, or is it regarded as not an English word at all? I ask because I haven't been able to find its spelling in Hindi, Urdu, or Punjabi. I think that would be the first step to finding an etymology. LANTZYTALK 03:53, 7 September 2010 (UTC)
- Lantzy, I can't thank you enough if you can track this word for me. It is almost a mystery ! It is liberally used in Punjabi speech only but I have never seen it written in punjabi or any other language. Jon Ascton (talk) 06:26, 8 September 2010 (UTC)
- I'm no expert on Punjabi orthography, but I tried every possible spelling and came up with nothing on Google. I even got clever and looked through some Sindhi and Balochi dictionaries, but without results. I'm beginning to favor the idea that it comes from the English "linter", a dialectical variation of "lean-to" (in fact, "linter" is probably the older word, with "lean-to" being a later reanalysis). "Linter" is itself a probable cognate of the English "lintel", from Old French, ultimately from the Latin "limitaris". There's also the distinct possibility that Punjabi "lenter" comes directly from the English "lintel". It's not difficult to imagine the conceptual leap from a horizontal beam over a door or window to a horizontal span across a ceiling. Desi "Lenter" seems to be used in the sense of "roof", not simply "beam", but such a semantic drift would not be remarkable. I have no hard evidence for this etymology, of course, but it's the only hypothesis I've come up with. If I happen across a big Punjabi or Urdu dictionary, I'll take a look. It seems odd that such a mundane word, related to a commonplace concept in no way obscene or obscure, would entirely escape the notice of lexicographers. I think it's the fact that it's so mundane, and yet so elusive, that has me fascinated. I'm not generally enthralled by ceilings. LANTZYTALK 07:43, 9 September 2010 (UTC)

File source problem with File:Savarkar3xt 2.jpg
[edit]Thank you for uploading File:Savarkar3xt 2.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. Please add this information by editing the image description page.
If the necessary information is not added within the next days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.
Please refer to the image use policy to learn what images you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. Please also check any other files you have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Here is a list of your uploads. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Replaceable fair use File:Satwantbh.PNG
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:Satwantbh.PNG. I noticed the description page specifies that this media item is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails the first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media item could be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media item is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the file description page and edit it to add

, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template. - On the file discussion page, write the reason why this media item is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Ghat.jpg
[edit]Thank you for uploading File:Ghat.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.
If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. SuperMarioMan 09:27, 10 April 2013 (UTC)

File permission problem with File:Maisarkhana.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:Maisarkhana.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.
If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either
- make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
- Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.
If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.
If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Sitush (talk) 18:16, 30 November 2014 (UTC)

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Kelly hi! 22:27, 12 December 2015 (UTC)

Is this song in Panjabi?
[edit]Greetings: I've run into this song in a YouTube video about the IVC (if the time in the link doesn't work and you land at the beginning of the video, it's happened to some people, it's 22 minutes and 15 seconds into the video (22:15), so you can get to it manually). Unfortunately no one has ever been able to tell me anything about it or even tell me what language it was in. Some people have suggested it was possibly Panjabi or Sindhi. Can you tell at least if it is Panjabi? The song is apparently about the Ghaggar-Hakra River, an intermittent river flowing only during monsoon, whose bed is believed to be that of the ancient Sarasvati. Thank you for any help. Cheers, Basemetal 14:57, 21 February 2018 (UTC) PS: Do you know anyone here who may know Sindhi or Punjabi or any of the other languages in that area?
I got your name from the local embassy under Panjabi, so I assumed you spoke Panjabi. Apologies if that's not the case. Basemetal 15:08, 21 February 2018 (UTC)
Yes. The song is in Punjabi. It is a folk-song, probably being sung by a Pakistani singer. Thanks Jon Ascton (talk) 01:21, 25 February 2018 (UTC)
Disambiguation link notification for May 30
[edit]Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Caste system in India, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Ambedkar (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)
It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, DPL bot (talk) 09:21, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Pathakbookcover.jpg
[edit]Thank you for uploading File:Pathakbookcover.jpg.
If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator seven days after the file was tagged in accordance with section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.

The article Shaminder Singh has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
This is utterly unencyclopedic. An entire section uncited for more than a decade. "Wildly popular during the militancy days, he was known for his independent spirit and boldly kept a respectable distance", etc. etc., a tone completely unsuited to Wikipedia.
