Philosophy question at RD/H

[edit]

You are of course correct that the answer is Hegel. Such ideas are omnipresent in his work one of the most major themes - so much so that anyone who doesn't realize this can't be said to understand Hegel at all. (So you clearly understand him better than Clio etc.) Look in a myriad of places in his History of Philosophy. Many of his most famous sentences are relevant - Just from memory - Phenomenology of Spirit - preface - No philosophy that deserves the name can be or ever has been refuted, one can just as well say that a flower refutes the bud. Philosophy of History, introduction - When philosophy begins to paint its grey on grey, some form of life must have grown old. The Owl of Minerva flies at dusk. The whole of his philosophy is devoted to the notion (IMHO quite true) that Philosophy is identical to the History of Philosophy - that each philosophy describes the world as well as the human race can describe its understanding at the time and that the history of philosophy shows mankind pulling himself up by his own bootstraps, building an endless philosophical system as he as discovers conceptual building blocks that help him understand the world as best he can at any given time. Hegel of course felt he was the last word at the time, but was not under the impression that history would stop in 1831. His self assessment in the Phenomenology is that no one knows better than him the defects of his work, but that he knows he was on the right road. He was. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 4.234.15.152 (talk) 05:30, 2 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hyperbole

[edit]

You made this edit in response to my objection to your statement that 99% of films are about how white men see themselves. Presumably, therefore, you're now saying that you didn't mean the 99% figure to be taken literally. So, what percentage of films do you think are about how white men see themselves? My point is that such films are no more common than any other type of film. --Richardrj talk email 13:01, 6 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, but that's exactly the point I was trying to make in my last sentence above. It's simply not true to say that white males continue to exert a disproportionate influence in Hollywood. Look at the Hollywood films on general release at any given time. They're about all kinds of experiences; those of women, ethnic minorities, children, immigrants, the elderly, gays... you name it, there's a film about it. I'd be interested if you could tell me where you perceive this disproportionate influence to be present, because it just doesn't accord with my own perception of the American film industry. --Richardrj talk email 18:28, 6 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You're dealing in academic generalities, not in grounded specifics. I've served my time in academia, and I have no wish to return there or to engage in academic discourse, which with rare exceptions serves no useful purpose whatsoever. Have a look, instead, at the top ten grossing films for 2008, as listed in 2008 in film. There, we have The Dark Knight, Indiana Jones, Iron Man, Hancock and James Bond, all of which are about male superheroes, one of whom is black. The others are white, but do those films depict either lived white experience, or lived male experience? No, they do not. (To take the most obvious example: do the James Bond films support a white male-centric view of the world? No, not at all.) Then we have Kung Fu Panda, Madagascar 2, Wall-E and Narnia, all of which are for children and depict experience as it is lived - or as we fondly imagine it is lived - by kids, animals and robots. Lastly, there is Mamma Mia, a chick flick par excellence. If I cared to, I could continue down the list of films released in 2008. How many of them support your argument that women and minorities are marginalised in Hollywood? Very few. --Richardrj talk email 20:54, 6 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! It seems you recently created an unreferenced biography of a living person: Justo Jorge Padrón. The community has decided that all new biographies of living persons must contain a reliable source that supports at least one statement made about the person in the article as per our verifiability policy. Please add references as soon as possible. Thanks! --LaraBot (talk) 00:10, 10 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The article Justo Jorge Padrón has been proposed for deletion because under Wikipedia policy, all biographies of living persons created after March 18, 2010, must have at least one source that directly supports material in the article.

If you created the article, please don't take offense. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners or ask at Wikipedia:Help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the {{prod blp}} tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. If you cannot provide such a source within ten days, the article may be deleted, but you can request that it be undeleted when you are ready to add one. Thank you for uploading File:Mystery_melody.ogg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the file. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 21:23, 4 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

New Rational Skepticism WikiProject member asking for look at Theosophy entry

[edit]

Since you are an active participant in the Rational Skepticism WikiProject, would you mind looking over the Wikipedia entry on Theosophy to see if you find any concerns?

I've been ordered to fix the page so that it accords with my understanding of the NPOV policy. I'm happy to do that but I have a lot of work at my job.

Now I've been told that I must make the changes by April 30th or the NPOV tag will be removed. I simply can't learn how to use Wikipedia as a newcomer, become familiar with all the sources, and make the edits if I must do it all by April 30th.

Would you look over the Theosophy page? Also, can you recommend anything? Thanks much,Factseducado (talk) 15:28, 27 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The article Futility Closet Podcast has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-notable podcast lacking in-depth, non-trivial support.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. Nomination of Futility Closet Podcast for deletion

[edit]

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Futility Closet Podcast is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Futility Closet Podcast until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article. reddogsix (talk) 17:48, 27 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Lantzy. I have changed the name and begun making major revisions to Futility Closet. For the moment I have taken out the infobox. We can put it all back once we get the balance between the blog and the podcast straightened out. Please have a go at expanding and revising the page. More needs to be said about the blog and, perhaps, a little bit less about the podcast. (It is IMHO just a tiny bit bloated.) But use your judgement. We also want to save your truly excellent List of Futility Closet Podcast episodes. Time is of the essence. I will be watching and helping as much as I can. But I regard this page as your baby and will defer to your choices. Just in case, I have saved both your original pages in my private workspace HERE.--Toploftical (talk) 10:35, 1 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to alert you to the large number of mentions of Futility Closet podcasts on Wikipedia. These contravene WP:REFSPAM. Please would you take a look at the Wikipedia protocol on this subject. May I ask that you desist in making edits of this type, which will all have to be reverted. (You are quite welcome to assist with these reverts if you so wish.)

I note, also, that Futility Closet has extensively plagiarised at least one Wikipedia article, and a brief study suggests that this is not the only instance. In fact, your exercise in providing publicity to this podcast is the reason why this plagiarism has been brought to light. The plagiarism issue will be dealt with separately elsewhere and in due course, but it seems relevant to mention it here.

Thanks,
