You show me what rules require someone to use a non-existent county of birth and we'll move forward, until then as I'm tired of repeating the same official diplomatic records to you and others nothing will change. By the way, constituent country's DOES NOT necessarily constitute country of birth, open a dictionary for once in your life. Also, go around and change all the profile info for all of those non-Russian, former USSR athlete's as well while you're at it and stop acting like a kiss ass to pro-fascist Serbs. --Alem Hadzic (talk) 21:57, 18 April 2009 (UTC)

Just wondering why you decided to change his infobox. I just checked on the football wikiproject and saw the player template hadn't changed, so I'm a little curious as to why you have taken it upon yourself to change it. Not bitter or anything (I like your style more), just curious.

Flags
I get confused with which guidelines I'm quoting to people sometimes, so I've probably quoted the wrong one to you. Nevertheless, I do recall discussions at WP:FOOTY that stated that flags should not be included in football infoboxes as they cause row alignment issues. On top of that, they are totally unnecessary in the national team section of the infobox as the name of the country is right there, so the flag adds nothing to the understanding of the article. – PeeJay 22:48, 4 March 2009 (UTC)
- Actually, for youth national teams, you can can use {{fbu}}. – PeeJay 23:37, 4 March 2009 (UTC)

Taiwo Atieno
Noticed you added Taiwo Atieno's new club, and that the source said Puerto Rico Islanders had traded him to Charleston Battery during the off-season, who in turn had transferred him to Rochester Rhinos. Was wondering if it's common practice in US soccer for a player to change clubs more than once like that? And in particular, shouldn't Charleston Battery appear in the infobox? or is there a convention that if a player joins a club and then leaves again outside the regular season, it doesn't count? cheers, Struway2 (talk) 11:39, 8 March 2009 (UTC)

Missing details
Jon, it really doesn't look good if you leave "placeholder" information in articles (such as in Rhode Island Rays, Miami Revolution, Michigan Phoenix, Real Shore FC (WPSL), or Rush Salt Lake City). If you don't have the data to finish the sentence, don't include the sentence. And don't put in "XXXX". DS (talk) 19:49, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Infoboxes
Great work on the infoboxes, especially switching the way we list college teams in the youthclub section (a change I'd been thinking of proposing). How do you feel about a move to list more detailed positional info in the "position" category, as in many player articles from other countries? We currently seem to be limiting ourselves to "goalkeeper"/"defender"/"midfielder"/"forward", with no other indications whatsoever. Two other random questions:
- We have a consensus to list PDL clubs under "senior career", even if the participation was concurrent with college attendance, right?
- Do we also have a consensus to list "years" for an MLS player according to the seasons played, rather than the strict dates of the tenure with the team? That is, if a player plays 2006, 2007, and 2008 with (say) the Colorado Rapids, and is waived during January 2009, we list him as 2006-2008, right? This is the way I've always done it and seen it done, but I'm currently in a discussion with another editor on the subject. I've always figured that since MLS clubs are sketchy with announcing releases (often waiting ages to actually do it), and since the actual years of play are the most important data, we simply list by seasons.

Flag in football players' infoboxes.
Hi, by adding flags you are going against consensus here, see for example Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Football/Archive 20#Flags in club infoboxes (June 2008). Could you please back up your claim that the Template:Fb for national football teams was designed by members of WP:FOOTY for this very purpose? --Jaellee (talk) 18:13, 20 March 2009 (UTC)
Statistics
Hi,please stop deleting statistics sections in players pages. Example, I restored Chris Leitch's statistics. It is common to include statistics and does not violate any rules, it is unfair to delete the work that others have researched. That does not clean up the page it just reduces its informational content. Thanks,(talk) —Preceding undated comment added 17:27, 31 March 2009 (UTC).
the statistics will also include playoff stats etc, which are not on info box. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Elomen76 (talk • contribs) 16:14, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

Barnstar, clubyears, etc.
Just following in your footsteps, haha. Thanks for the barnstar, by the way! And what resources are you using for the USL all-time rosters? - I'd be happy to help.
Here's a question: we previously discussed the "clubyears" infobox category for MLS players, and agreed that the clubyears listed should correspond with years played. I'm going through various Chivas USA players right now, as you saw — finishing up the all-time roster for that club — and noticing how much confusion there has been on this issue over the years at Wikipedia.
I guess I'd propose a uniform standard, based on the way that MLSnet lists player stats (and based on the nature of the league): any season for which a player is rostered with a team is counted into the clubyears section. For instance, if a guy plays for Colorado in the 2006 season and is traded to Columbus before the 2007 season begins, only 2006 is listed. But if a guy plays for Colorado in the 2006 season and is traded to Columbus during the 2007 season (June, say), both 2006 and 2007 are listed as years for his Colorado tenure even if he didn't play a match for Colorado during 2007. I think this is the best way to record years — and, happily, it conforms with the way the league's official site records stats.
I have been thinking that we US-soccer editors might want to have some sort of official "summit" (or meeting, or whatever) on the talk page of the US/Canada WP:FOOTY taskforce...we could nail down guidelines on a number of tricky issues which are particular to American soccer, or at least somewhat unusual...like the exact way to list colleges, the way to list years, when to use accents in names, how to properly disambiguate American players, all kinds of things. Then we could write these guidelines out and put them up so that newer editors understand how to do things. Mr. IP 《Defender of Open Editing》 05:04, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

Despite what may be the norm with MLS players, we do not list the place of birth next to the date of birth in the lead. We also include personal details about people (i.e. their parents) since they are people, and not just athletes. Aboutmovies (talk) 08:41, 6 April 2009 (UTC)
While it's fairly obvious the "SD" in SD United stands for San Diego, it is listed on both the league website and the team website as SD United. The wikipedia name should reflect this obvious branding/naming of the team. GauchoDude (talk) 04:30, 7 April 2009 (UTC)

Celades
Hi there JON, VASCO from Portugal here,
I want to discuss with you several issues in Albert Celades' article: First, i see there is an ongoing "feud" between you and user Bruninho...Well, let me tell you man, he writes no edit summaries and does not engage in any conversations. Beats me why he answered me one time (i admit i did write to him in Portuguese, his (Brazil) and mine (Portugal) mothertongue), but he has the custom of reverting stuff on sight (he "quarreled" that way with me before the message, reverting stuff sometimes 5, 6 times, without a word, and with a neverending supply of anonymous IP - still, he assured me, in the message in Portuguese, he was no vandal, just a newbie learning his way around).
Secondly, after your cleanup in Celades' bit, some stuff was wrongly removed, i reckon...Why, in introduction, remove good ref where the player finally settles the score about his birthplace (for years, people were not sure if it was ANDORRA LA VELLA or BARCELONA)? Why, also in intro, remove player position (defensive midfielder) and player's fullname? Not quite sure why you did that...Player full names appear in INTRO and INFOBOX and, in some cases, provinces of birthplace also (i.e. BARCELONA, CATALONIA, nothing wrong with that extra info).
Back to the edit war, regarding the FC in clubs, i once "taught" BRUNINHO about FA (featured articles) and GA (good), and told him that in some cases, articles had to be in a way that could not be altered (for instance, in footballers, Thierry Henry and Francesc Fábregas were to cases of top level items), and he told me he would respect and not alter more there (not sure if he has kept his word). However, in an approach which i found not very ethical, he told me if ANYONE altered stuff in other FC Barcelona articles (99,99999999% of his contributions are related to this ball club), he would not hesitate to revert everything on sight, of which Celades is a good example (you revert, he re-reverts, and so on...). I have seen tons of articles with FC BARCELONA and the same amount (ok, slightly less) with only BARCELONA, so am not quite clear about the patterns...
Cheers, keep up the good work (by the way my 2 edits in Celades were anonymous, forgot to log in),

What does Mr. Broxton think about this statement?
Much of Hagakure was influenced by or written about Yamamoto's lord's father--Nabeshima Naoshige and lessons or sayings handed down by him. Nabeshima Naoshige was a true Sengoku Daimyo who had killed hundreds of men in battle and therefore learned his lessons of warfare firsthand. He was a wise and experienced leader who saved the clan from destruction more than once. Hagakure can be considered a fair picture of the Bushido ethic.
How do you do? Thank you! Relly Komaruzaman Talk 04:27, 8 April 2009 (UTC)

Hello, Jon. You created an article for Lehigh Valley Jazz quite some time ago. From the looks of it, nothing ever came to fruition with this team. WP:FOOTY manual of style
Hi, concerning your reversion of my disambiguating edit, I thought I'd look through the Football Wikiproject's manual of style. Unfortunately, I can't see that proscription on that page or the seemingly-most-relevant MOS pages I checked. Can you point me in the right direction? I'm not going to argue to the toss on this (I was just passing through), but I will point out that most sports coverage (in the UK at least) refers to these teams most commonly as Inter Milan and A.C. Milan. While I can see the logic of not including the FC or AC every time a team's name is presented, some should surely be treated as an occasional exception; we shouldn't have to force readers who know the teams by the aforementioned names to have to click through to another article, or at least hover over the link, to see which Milan we're referring to. Perhaps the guideline could be clarified to this effect. All the best, Steve T • C 21:34, 2 May 2009 (UTC)
Jon, I question the decision to change Kupono Low's nationality to PUR. Kupono told me that he is no longer eligible to play for PUR because he does not live on the island (not sure if this is a FIFA mandate or a PUR federation mandate) but regardless, he can't play for them again. He was born in Hawaii and doesn't count as an "international" player according to the USL-1 foreign player rules so I think he should be listed as USA. Just my opinion. Proposed deletion of Mark Draycott
A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Mark Draycott, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process because of the following concern:
- Player fails WP:ATHLETE as has never played in a fully-pro league
All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}}
notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because, even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. GiantSnowman 16:44, 28 May 2009 (UTC)
- I see you've removed the PROD on this article. Do you have a source that Draycott actually played for either Portland Timbers or Wilmington Hammerheads; if not I'm taking it to AfD. Regards, GiantSnowman 16:48, 28 May 2009 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, a player saying he played at a fully-pro level won't cut the mustard. I'm going to nominate for AfD, and hopefully someone will be able to find a source proving he played in the USL at pro-level; if that's the case, then I have no problem in withdrawing my nomination. Cheers, GiantSnowman 16:59, 28 May 2009 (UTC)

Opinion given (PDL bio links)
Jon, I really think that's a great idea. Of course, you'll have to keep tabs on it so that if the links change or a player Wiki page is added, it will need to be modified. On the other hand, once they do qualify for a Wiki page, voila! You immediately have some background info on the player right there in front of you. Otav347 (talk) 21:55, 22 June 2009 (UTC)
- I like it too, though that's going to be quite a bit of work getting them for all the teams (I'm still stuck on some of the older W-League season pages, so that's kind of my first priority with the WL pages). It does make it more personable than just having a bunch of red links on the rosters. Mtndrums (talk) 04:55, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
- Jon, I like the idea. I don't thinks it's overkill. It's just a shame there is not a central database like SoccerBase for college/amateur players. I also agree with Otav347 in that once the do qualify for a Wiki page the research is linked right there. Thanks for the note. --Coppercanuck (talk) 16:32, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

I see there are some editors "in your case". My god, these fellows are pushy, everything has to be their way. It looks as if it's some kind of "society", where everything is pre-arranged and you can't get in and change stuff.
Honestly, i have given up arguing about the FC/no FC discussion. It will stay that way, some players with FC, some without. Everything will be a mess, but since it's what they want...
Another thing: i am not User:Mauricy nor somebody else. So tell them to stop the investigations and everything else. I am minding my business now, have been editing very little this last days (as opposed to them, i have a social life: work, girl, friends, etc...). Therefore, it article changes come about, it will not be me...
Please note well, i am ASSURING i will not change it more. I don't want any trouble, only for them to stop threatening and harassing me. If they leave me be, i won't disturb anyone.
I would like for you to write all that for them (preferably the entire text). And sorry again for putting you in the mix.

USL all-time rosters
Great work on the collaboration of all of the rosters. I believe that naming conventions determine that all of the roster should be titled "List of team name players". See: List of Pittsburgh Penguins players, List of Manchester United F.C. players, List of Pittsburgh Steelers players, Category:Lists of footballers by club, etc. Would you like to rename them or should I? I was going to update the templates, {{USL-1 all-time rosters}} and {{USL-2 all-time rosters}}, to the {{Navbox}} format, but I didn't want to do it until the pages were moved to a proper name format. PDL Post-season
Yeah, Jon, this season was tough all around. They lost when it counted. They lost at Fort Wayne early which cost them a fourth straight US Open Cup bid. Late in the year, they lost at home against London (ref decided to steal the show late in the match, so to speak), and both games against Chicago, all of which were crucial to playoff positioning. A few of us went to the game in London to witness their last chance at a playoff bid (they needed a win, a draw was as good as a loss). They had their chances, but just couldn't finish, as the game ended 0-0. Quite a disappointing end to the season. Very frustrating. Good luck to you and HUFC in the playoffs! Anton Peterlin
Jon, Anton Peterlin the footballer is the grandson of Anton Peterlin the physicist (I happen to know the family). If you go to Anton Peterlin (physicist), you can read that "his son, Boris Matija Peterlin is a distinguished biomedical researcher at the University of California, San Francisco." Then if you go to his brother's bio at the Standford web site you can see that his brother's father's name is Matija Peterlin. I know that the one is the other's grandson because of my personal connection to the family, and I think the evidence above shows it, although I can't find a single source. Cheers. Reading Rage
This player has never been capped by NI so the flag is being used to represent his birthplace as you are aware being a football supporter he could also play for Republic of Ireland so being uncapped the flag is wrong. BigDunc 20:18, 7 August 2009 (UTC)
(moved from BigDunc talk) That's correct, the player has never played internationally. However, WP:MOSFLAG states, in relation to sportspeople:
"Flags should never indicate the player's nationality in a non-sporting sense; flags should only indicate the sportsperson's national squad/team or sporting nationality... If a sportsperson has not competed at the international level, then the eligibility rules of the international sport governing body (such as IRB, FIFA, IAAF, etc.) should be used. If these rules allow a player to represent two or more nations, then the eligibility rule that is most apt should be applied; most often it is the place of birth."
The link I posted earlier clearly shows that the player is from Northern Ireland. FIFA uses the Ulster banner to represent Northern Ireland in a footballing sense (irrespective of any other national or sociopolitical undertones); as the player on the Reading Rage article is clearly related to football, then this flag is the one we use. --JonBroxton (talk) 20:23, 7 August 2009 (UTC)

Hey, if Funicello had played for Aldershot in the Conference, it would have been listed on Soccerbase or another stats website. That source is very vague and gives no appearance details, it could well mean that he has been playing on trial. I don't know how big the Conference National is in Norfolk, Virginia but that seems to be one of the only source to say he played in that league. It would definately been reported on in an English source, even just a name-check in a match report. On Funicello's official site he has not listed Aldershot Town. Place of birth entagled with date of birth
Not the first time guidelines have changed without my noticing it, however it used to read "Locations of birth and death are given subsequently rather than being entangled with the dates". After a bit of digging, there was a discussion here, recently in which no clear consensus was met. Cheers, --Jimbo[online] 11:45, 5 October 2009 (UTC)
Date & place of birth in brackets
A stalemate indeed my friend! My understanding has always been that an article should read "GiantSnowman (born 30 July 1988) is a British Wikipedian. He was born in Canada." as opposed to "GiantSnowman (born 30 July 1988 in Canada) is a British Wikipedian." It seems our colleague Jimbo above is of a similar opinion; but perhaps we should get consensus at WP:FOOTY one way or the other if we can't agree? GiantSnowman 20:04, 11 October 2009 (UTC)
Hey..
First off, thanks for the update on the article, I'm not as good with Wiki code as I would like, so thanks for improving it :). Now, the other side, I have a question, I brought up on the talk page. We have indications of what is believed to be the injuries that Davies suffered in the crash, from a reliable source (Steven Goff of the Washington Post). However, it's via his twitter feed, not in a column yet. Wait and see till we have more info? SirFozzie (talk) 21:34, 13 October 2009 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of List of Vancouver Whitecaps transfers 2008-09
The article List of Vancouver Whitecaps transfers 2008-09 has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- It is consensus at WikiProject Football not to have team-only transfer lists. Appropriate content should be merged to Vancouver Whitecaps 2008 season and Vacouver Whitecaps 2009 season.
While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}}
will stop the Proposed Deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The Speedy Deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and Articles for Deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Soccer-holicI hear voices in my head... 16:59, 16 October 2009 (UTC)

D.C. United and former player list
Notable former player list have repeatedly come under criticism over at WikiProject Football. I'd just assume that we avoid the problems of this uncitable section which has no rules for inclusion. You won't find this list on any of the FA level team pages. We have instead the Best XI list, which includes over half of the "notable former players", and is both citable and has a distinct rule for inclusion. The former players section has been commented out most of this year, and the article was promoted to GA status without it, so I'm very weary of returning it to the page. I deleted it outright because I hear that Seattle is trying to be the first MLS featured article, and I'd like to get the article ready for that too.-- Patrick {oѺ∞} 17:18, 22 October 2009 (UTC)
- Alternatively, several of the team FAs use the team's pick for MVP during recent years. Maybe we could put a list of who's won that that up in place of "notable former players" or "MLS Best XI".-- Patrick {oѺ∞} 22:14, 22 October 2009 (UTC)

Just because assists are not tracked by stats databases doesnt mean you cant have it in the wiki article & if you want to verify assists then bloody watch matches instead hiding behind website stats technicalities which are even sometimes incorrect. template nft
Template nft does not go directly to the United States men's page it would just confuse wikipedia and go directly to here → United States. So the nft template for the United States is not necessary and I don't know any other templates but we can't use that one. Wikipedia has 2 US Soccer pages, the men's page and the women's page. You should've known that by now since it was discussed about 2-3 months ago on WT:FOOTY. – Michael (talk) 23:39, 5 November 2009 (UTC)

Hello. If you have a look at MOS:BIO#Names, you'll see that the full name is actually required in the opening. Just commenting because it sounds a little misleading, but shouldn't the statistics for the years prior to 2009 be attributed towards Washington Freedom? I understand we had the should we break it up or should we not, but I was under the assumption that the Washington Freedom main team was run continuously from WUSA in 2001 through the end in 2003, then jumped to exhibitions, then did the W-League from 2006 to 2008, and is now from 2009 onwards in WPS. If this is the case, the statistics should be reflected from 2006 through 2008 on the main page, not the Reserves page. The Reserves were created to have a w-league presence since the main club was leaving, hence it was created in 2008. Just my two cents, because I worked on the Ella Masar page, who played for the Freedom in 2008 and I ultimately decided to direct it to say that she played for Washington Freedom instead of Washington Freedom Reserves. Gold Cup
You recently wrote that "The CONCACAF Gold Cup is the North/Central American equivalent of the European Championship, so it's definitely a major competition." Unfortunately, they tarnish the reputation of the tournament by having every two years, which means that in half of the tournaments the top players can't be with their national teams because their clubs don't have to let them go. Maybe they should call those kinds of tournaments the "Silver Cup" and allow smaller nations such as Costa Rica, Trinidad & Tobago, etc. to host them. </vent> JohnnyPolo24 (talk) 15:11, 13 November 2009 (UTC)
- That's very true; I entirely agree. The Gold Cup is really another one of Jack Warner's schemes to line his pockets with as many ill-gotten gains as possible. I think they should do it every 4 years too, and align it with the Euro Champs, so that you have a nice cycle of World Cup/CONCAFAF/Year Off/Confed. Cup... but I doubt that will ever happen. --JonBroxton (talk) 16:39, 13 November 2009 (UTC)

Charlie Davies
While I disagree with your reverting the edit, I won't revert yours. My issue is that by making the lead now 4 paragraphs, we have essentially doubled the length of the article, and now there's literally no point in reading past the lead, as you're just re-reading the same information. The Fabio Cannavaro page, a player worlds and worlds ahead of Davies in terms of professional accomplishment and accolades, SHOULD, by your reasoning, have a lead of 10-12 paragraphs. It is one paragraph, which presents who the person is and what he is notable for, then the body of the article goes into detail on those points. There's no need in the Davies article to put his caps and goal scoring record, as it's contained in the information box. His accident is covered in great detail in the article as well, you yourself stated that once it is no longer a "current" event, it would be subsumed into the article. Now you're editing against your previous edit. Again, I'm not going to revert it, but there is literally no logical or justifiable reason why the article on a 23 year old soccer player, who has achieved little to nothing of real note, needs to be 4 paragraphs, and needs to double the length of his article. 99.169.250.133 (talk) 02:53, 15 November 2009 (UTC)

Consensus please
Please stop reverting the removal of the flags from the infobox on Seattle Sounders FC. One more revert of that by you in the next 24 hours will be a WP:3RR violation. On top of that, I regard your actions as exceptionally rude given that we're in the middle of an FA review of the article. I can't think of a worse time for somebody to come pick an edit war fight than right now. Please, please, please talk about things you disagree with before reverting them while the FA review is going on (and talking in the edit summaries doesn't count). --SkotyWATalk|Contribs 09:20, 14 November 2009 (UTC)
- As and FYI (I don't know if you're watching the FA review discussion or not) consensus has been reached to remove the flags from the infobox (for owners and the coach), but keep them in the player roster. There are examples of many soccer/football club articles that do not have flags in the infobox (and many that do as you've pointed out). There are no examples of player rosters that do not have flags. This indeed is a "standard" across all of Wikipedia. The flags in the infobox however, are not and consensus is that they be removed from the Seattle Sounders FC article. In order to avoid you trying to start an edit war again, I'm courtiously notifying you of the coming deletion. Please if you disagree, make your points in the FA review discussion (and please don't belabor the discussion by repeating the same points over and over again). Thanks! --SkotyWATalk|Contribs 21:31, 21 November 2009 (UTC)

TOA League page
Oh, whoops.... "(Undid revision # by CyMoahk (talk) the league doesn't have a name yet - lets wait until it does before we create an article)" I put those "red" links in b/c I was already working on the page so the links wouldn't be red a moment later.... Anyway, I already created the page; I don't think not having an official name yet is a reason to not have the page, we just move it when the name is announced. There's enough press going around (though I haven't put references in the article yet.... >.> <.<) that I thought it was high time the article was created.... =-/ CyMoahk (talk) 04:29, 21 November 2009 (UTC)
- Oh, here's the article I made; probably should have linked you to that in the above statement. ^.^' btw I must say I'm highly impressed at how quickly you responded to my changes on the USL1 and SLSU pages - that was fast, man! nice. CyMoahk (talk) 04:32, 21 November 2009 (UTC)
- Nah, no toe-stepping at all (though I was surprised how quickly you deleted the links). And I actually hadn't caught wind that a name was coming soon (college is a bubble), though I still think "not having a name" isn't a good reason to not have the article; it certainly hasn't stopped other articles from being made in the past (Vancouver MLS, and both Atlanta WPS and Philadelphia WPS before they had names, for example). CyMoahk (talk) 05:19, 21 November 2009 (UTC)
We should probably do a requested move of the current North American Soccer League (2010) page to simply North American Soccer League since it is the active league with that name which seems to be the precedent with teams and leagues that share names. I already moved the old NASL out of the way and added redirects to both pages for us. Gateman1997 (talk) 22:03, 23 November 2009 (UTC)
Subnational flag icons
I'm not sure why you think they are necessary on those articles. The clubs do not represent their associated state or province; they are simply decorations to identify their home location. In other words, is being used to identify (obliquely) that a club is located in Sacramento, Fresno, etc. That is why I assert they are superfluous to the topic of those articles. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 01:28, 26 November 2009 (UTC)

Where's the consensus to remove the honors from MLS infoboxes? Skotywa pointed me to a discussion on the infobox talk page, but the final decision seems to have been to include the honors in the template. For MLS teams, I don't see the problem. There are at most, five honors that MLS teams can have, MLS Cup, MLS Supporters Shield, Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup/Canadian Championship, CONCACAF Champions League/CONCACAF Champions' Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup. --Bobblehead (rants) 19:19, 7 January 2010 (UTC)

Josh Tudela's transfer at Steaua
I saw on your user page that you made significant edits to soccer related articles. And that is a very good thing to do. Now regarding Tudela's transfer: squad changes on Wikipedia articles must follow an official source of information and by official I mean info released by the club. Steaua owner Becali could say anyting about anyone and the next minute is all over the media. Some week ago Steaua transfered another player from Bulgaria. False. There was only speculations in the press. So I kindly ask you not to make unsourced edits. If a transfer is official, the club announces it on the official website and by press conference. Until then, any news remains in the media. Let us not forget Wikipedia is meant to be an accurate encyclopedia and NOT an online newspaper. Best regards, Gabinho (talk) 22:15, 19 January 2010 (UTC)

- 2. With it being your site, it is a potential violation of WP:COI if you place the link; Issue #1 notwithstanding, it is general policy to require links to be added by someone unaffiliated with the target.

Notable Players sections
I wanted to bring this conversation/proposal to your attention. I know that you wrote the "disclaimer" that appears in many of these sections for MLS teams and that you work to keep these lists at some level on consistency. I encourage you to leave feedback if you have any concerns. Thanks! --SkotyWAT|C 03:06, 22 January 2010 (UTC)
Removing the FC
Could you link me to where it's stated we don't put the FC in team names? Because we appear to be doing just that on several pages including Major League Soccer. Gateman1997 (talk) 17:40, 28 January 2010 (UTC)
- To your point, why would it be Seattle Sounders FC then? That team is usually spoken "Seattle Sounders". Same goes for Chicago Fire S.C. which is usually spoken just Chicago Fire. I'm not trying to be obtuse or anything but it seems to me the standard isn't that standardized yet. Also with regard to San Diego Boca FC I'd point out that as a brand new team as of yesterday we don't have a standard spoken name for at least that team yet. Gateman1997 (talk) 18:34, 28 January 2010 (UTC)
- I guess I'm making it an issue because we're applying it to teams in NPSL that are brand new that may or may not follow that pattern. To date San Diego Boca FC for instance has only refered to itself as such with the spoken word. They've not dropped the FC. If we're going to use that as the criterion shouldn't it be on a case by case basis? Gateman1997 (talk) 20:10, 28 January 2010 (UTC)
MLS Players category
Please read WP:CAT. All those players are members of a sub-category of Category:Major League Soccer players and by definition all the attributes of the MLS player category are passed on to the members of its sub-category. I've gotta go, but I'll be back online in a couple of hours if you wish to discuss this further. --Bobblehead (rants) 23:29, 28 January 2010 (UTC)
- Haven't heard back from you, so I'm assuming you're in agreement that Category:Major League Soccer players can be removed from articles that are members of a team's player category. If MLS had promotion/relegation I could see the point in having the players in the league category, but since it doesn't, it's a bit redundant to have players in both. I'm probably going to fire up AWB and remove the category tomorrow (Jan 31), so if you have any concerns about this, let me know and we can discuss it either amongst ourselves, or seek wider involvement.--Bobblehead (rants) 20:07, 30 January 2010 (UTC)
Dayton Dutch Lions FC logo
As the designer of the logo for Dayton Dutch Lions, I noticed you put a picture of their logo in the article. Great! However, somehow you have gotten your hand on an old version of it. I have a document with the real version of the logo. I'm completely new to Wikipedia however, I'm not a so-called confirmed user, so I don't think I'm able to put it online. Can I send it to you so you can put it in the article, or upload it? Erwinsala (talk) 12:58, 4 February 2010 (UTC)
Lodeweges
If FC Edmonton claim that Lodeweges is a former Dutch international, they are wrong. The Dutch football association, the KNVB, has listed every single Dutch international on its website. Lodeweges is not listed. 94.212.31.237 (talk) 17:37, 10 February 2010 (UTC)
- That makes him a youth international, not a full international. He hasn't been capped for the senior side, so he's not a Netherlands international footballer. 94.212.31.237 (talk) 23:40, 10 February 2010 (UTC)

RE:You're using the wrong infobox template
Thanks for the heads up mate, I have to work today, but I would be happy to change when I get a free moment, I'll be working today. Cheers! But the one thing I was worried about beyond not finding sources that are reliable is that I read the footy player notability guidelines and I'm not really sure that all of these players currently qualify to have Wikipedia articles at allDylant2011 (talk 20:17, 26 February 2010 (UTC)
- It should be fine. Once they play a game they automatically pass the WP:FOOTY guidleines, and the season kicks off in less than 8 weeks. Just keep working away quietly and everything will be OK eventually. --JonBroxton (talk) 22:50, 26 February 2010 (UTC)

Beckham's loan status
Jon, I don't mean to quarrel with your latest edit to the Beckham article, but do you have a source indicating that his loan with Milan has been terminated? I mean, I too am under the impression that he will not play for Milan again this season, so he moved back home to rehab and be closer to his family, but I'm pretty sure that Milan is still paying his wages and footing the bill for his rehab even though it is being done in the States. Without a source, I don't think it would be good to make that change to such a high profile article. Thanks and have a good one. -- Grant.Alpaugh 22:09, 2 April 2010 (UTC)
Whitecaps Roster change reverted
As per the header in the section:
-- Do NOT add new players before their signing is officially announced by the club -- and do NOT assign unreferenced squad numbers as well. -- Do NOT create articles for brand new signings until they make either their USSF-D2 or Canadian Championship debut, -- and do not add wikilinks to these players as it prevents the creation of articles by people who don't understand the WP:FOOTY notability guidelines -- Players with international caps should NOT be bolded - as per Wikipedia:WikiProject_Football/Clubs -- This is Wikipedia, not a football gazette. -- Any unconfirmed and unsourced signing/transfer will be reverted at sight. -- Thanks in advance.
Also, blogs such as http://nasl.com/blogs/naslblog/show/13 do not meet WP:V. This is great news for the caps though. --Walter Görlitz (talk) 00:05, 9 April 2010 (UTC)

The article All-time Long Island Rough Riders roster has been proposed for deletion because under Wikipedia policy, all biographies of living persons created after March 18, 2010, must have at least one source that directly supports material in the article. The nominator also raised the following concern:
- The only source is to a page that does not provide any reliable sourcing for the claims on the page.
If you created the article, please don't take offense. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners or ask at Wikipedia:Help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the {{prod blp}} tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. If you cannot provide such a source within ten days, the article may be deleted, but you can request that it be undeleted when you are ready to add one. Woogee (talk) 05:18, 1 May 2010 (UTC)

Re-add them *when* you have the time, not before. --Cameron Scott (talk) 18:28, 3 May 2010 (UTC)
I'm not, it's just that around here later often means "never". If you haven't got the time to put them in the correct manner at the moment, just do it later, there is no timeline - but that's no reason to have a article which is out of whack with the MOS for no reason. --Cameron Scott (talk) 18:31, 3 May 2010 (UTC)
I see there must be about at least ten articles like this - I'll leave the rest alone for a week but anything that is still a bare link in a week, I'll delete as per the MOS. --Cameron Scott (talk) 18:37, 3 May 2010 (UTC)

EngVar
Unless I'm reading it incorrectly, WP:ENGVAR basically says date formats are superficial, but should follow the general, for lack of a better word, "flow" of the article. Just because Motagalvan is a soccer player born in America, I don't feel that qualifies for "strong national ties to a topic". Granted I was probably a bit vain in changing the dates in the first place, but those were just a few of the changes I made to the article to improve it. Please advise. Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Oldgalaxylogo.png
Thank you for uploading File:Oldgalaxylogo.png. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.
If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. TorriTorri(talk/contribs) 05:33, 27 May 2010 (UTC)

I dunno, mate. I thought about doing something about him, but I'm in too deep now. If anyone sounds the alarm on this one, I'm facing a temporary block for edit-warring myself. Apologies
Hi there JON, VASCO here,
please accept my apologies for any overheated summary of mine you might have come across with. I have some anger management problems that need addressing (and i am not being ironic, the "honestest" of truths!).
I will never apologize for this behaviour with any vandal (they deserve nothing but utter despise), but with good and kind editors such as yourself, i really should not do it, never (don't know if you are writing me because of the summary at Edgaras Jankauskas or anything else...). However, please note that, sometimes, when i write in capitals, it's not as much as a shout as it is to put stress on this and that particular word, simple as that.
Again, sorry for any inconvenience, keep up the good work, from Portugal - --Vasco Amaral (talk) 21:08, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
- However, i do point out that when i'm (sometimes seemingly sometimes for real) aggressive, everybody on my case. When i'm polite and helpful, well...not!! Quite interesting, and your message (only noted it now), was filled with sarcasm, but OK, i can't take "the heat" when i deserve it. Ciao - --Vasco Amaral (talk) 23:35, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
- Another on Edgaras Jankauskas (and i sincerely hope i am not going to be scolded again, i sincerely want to help you and all the well-intended users at the site - as opposed to vandals, i want to make their wiki-life as miserable as possible): please don't correct his position from STRIKER to FORWARD, he is a pure striker, a goal-getter "extraordinaire". I would put Landon Donovan, for example, in that position (a forward is an offensive player who is not static in position, moves also in the wings to get himself in good scoring position), Brian McBride would be a striker. A third variation is centre forward, strikers with few technical skills and good physical approach (Julio Salinas, Emile Heskey, Hugo Almeida, etc).
I hope i helped you with this ESPN-like analysis ;) However, should you decide to revert Jankauskas again, nothing more i can do, don't worry, i won't "re-revert" it. Cheers, happy Saturday(s) - --Vasco Amaral (talk) 18:48, 5 June 2010 (UTC)

Josh Saunders
Why did you undo? The version you have reverted to is confusing. The incorporated United States, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, and some other territories share the same citizenship. Saunders was not born in Puerto Rico, nor is he descended from anyone who lived there or was born there. He is therefore not ethnically Puerto Rican, nor is it possible for one to gain Puerto Rican citizenship (no such citizenship exists). To say that he is a Puerto Rican footballer is confusing. Latter in the article it is much clearer to say 'Puerto Rican sporting nationality'. WP:ROWN WP:REVEXP
- No, yours was much more confusing. Saunders is American born footballer who plays for the Puerto Rican national team, therefore in the eyes of FIFA he is Puerto Rican, and has Puerto Rican sporting nationality. It has nothing to do with whether he is ethnically Puerto Rican or not. Adding a whole load of nonsense about the contiguous 48 states and being Anglo-American just confuses the matter. Oh, and I don't need you to add links to revert rules. I'm familiar with how this site works, thank you. --JonBroxton (talk) 20:09, 8 June 2010 (UTC)

Hi there JON, VASCO here,
I see you also have met "The Zombie", scary stuff man. No, what's the other word? Rude! You sent him a message regarding his very poor English/verb tenses (see here http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Zombie433&diff=362842444&oldid=362842400, exactly like mine two months ago - i could not have put it better than you), what did he do? Remove it in minutes, without any reply.
This is extremely unpolite of his part, treating WP like his personal site. Something needs to be done, although i am not quite sure what, since his actions are not vandalic.
Incredible on his part too (i have seen it on numerous occasions), he sometimes removes English source, adding a foreign one. I don't know about others, but i have got one solution: whatever i come across in my edits where he has "contributed", i UNDO, period!
Cheers, keep up the good work (not counting to get a reply, still after apologizing for my hysterics in some summaries, can't apologize anymore), happy week from Portugal - --Vasco Amaral (talk) 19:35, 14 June 2010 (UTC)

Hi Jon. I've just created an article for this player and I notice that you're involved in Springfield Demize related stuff, so if there is anything you can contribute then you're welcome to do so. I've done what I can but my knowledge of football in the States is very limited. Cheers. Argyle 4 Lifetalk 14:09, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
Hi. I've posted an explanation of the process shenanigans involving this AFD; given that your request was what spurred me to do so, you might find it of value. Best, UltraExactZZ Said ~ Did 20:27, 24 June 2010 (UTC)
- What has happened here? He is notable? How do we go about changing this as MANY players fall under the US Open Cup scenario who don't have an MLS appearance, as I'm sure the same goes for the FA Cup between notable teams in England. GauchoDude (talk) 04:57, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
- So? If Barack Obama emailed in requesting his entry be deleted, it wouldn't be because he surpasses notability criterion. Why should Johnny Alcaraz be any different? A dangerous precedent, methinks. GauchoDude (talk) 17:16, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
Rafa Marquez
Since you are not one of those users that add rumors and that helps football articles then I'll leave it alone. I'm disappointed that he is going to a very bad league instead of staying in Europe. I always thought that you needed to add the player on the current roster only if it had been announced by the club on their website. Many users wanted to add Javier Hernandez to the Manchester United roster but there were users that said to add it until it's official. Also with Pablo Barrera and Efrain Juarez, users said to add until officially announced by their teams, I just followed their instructions. GoPurple'nGold24 21:21, 23 July 2010 (UTC)
- Oh and also, Goal.com is not a reliable source, they have said many rumors that are not true. GoPurple'nGold24 21:24, 23 July 2010 (UTC)
Christian Nzinga
Hey, I'm not sure if this forum posting should be used as a source on Christian Nzinga as WP:RS#Self-published sources (online and paper) states "self-published media—whether books, newsletters, personal websites, open wikis, blogs, personal pages on social networking sites, Internet forum postings, or tweets—are largely not acceptable". Also, while his profile on the AC St. Louis website would presumably be a WP:RS through being on the club's official website, I'd be tempted to take its content with a pinch of salt regarding the player's involvement with the Angola national team. It states he has made one appearance for Angola, while National Football Teams has no record of him ever playing for them. Cheers, Mattythewhite (talk) 00:14, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the message.
As you say, we're going to have to agree to fundamentally disagree, and given the gravity of the discussion the likelihood is that we will both remain heavily involved. But as long as we're both editing in the knowledge that the other person is not trying to be disruptive, I'm sure we'll get through this discussion. For my part I'm sorry if my comments (not just towards you) have been seen as lacking in the assumption of good faith. The content of my posts will continue to reflect my opinion, but for my part I will go to greater lengths to ensure that they are not perceived as being hostile. - Lol.
- I'm going to stay away from the issue for a day or two anyway (beyond a possible retraction and apology as specified on my talk page). On reflection, from my perspective I'm confident that the process will bear fruit in one way or another. If that fruit is a consensus to ignore the Manual of Style and keep the template unchanged, that will still mark an improvement on what we were before, i.e. no consensus of any kind, and regular discussions on the matter. It needed a centralised discussion anyway; last time we tried to do it internally, we ended up with a factually incorrect header. --WFC-- 03:32, 25 July 2010 (UTC)

- My time is mine to use. I wanted to waste my time in creating a template and to maintain. You said it was too difficult for you to work with. I said I would not maintain the roster in three places and said I would only consent to removal of the template if someone else kept the three rosters in sync. You agreed to that. You have not kept up to your end of the agreement. I can do what I want with my time and I don't want to keep the rosters up-to-date. I want to use a template instead. So the best use of my time would be to use a template. Walter Görlitz (talk) 16:00, 27 July 2010 (UTC)

Player categories
Hi, Jon. I know you do a lot of maintenance on American lower division footballer articles so I thought you'd be a good person to ask about this. I was looking through the categories for Portland Timbers players and the hierarchy goes something like this:
United Soccer Leagues players -> USL First Division players -> USL First Division players by club -> Portland Timbers (USL) players
I've noticed that there are a lot of players in both the USL First Division players and Portland Timbers (USL) players categories. Shouldn't they only be in the latter because it is a subcategory of the former? If so, I'm willing to do some clean-up and remedy that situation. DemonJuice (talk) 16:49, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
- It looks like it has been used for some players and not for others. Looking at the discussions on the categories page of WikiProject Football it appears that consensus is they are redundant and players shouldn't be in both. It looks very rampant in USL, though, compared to MLS where only a few players are in the MLS player category as well as a team's category. DemonJuice (talk) 17:20, 6 August 2010 (UTC)
- It was pointed out to me that I should look beyond MLS for precedent and indeed it seems that players are, for the most part, in both team and league categories. There are also good, compelling reasons for that. I've reverted the changes I started making and have been convinced that using both categories is probably the way to go. On reverts
Regarding this: Hamilton has been playing at a professional level for four years now and has made as many appearances for two previous clubs as he has his current one. Therefore, it is deficient to mention only his current club in the lede. I'd have thought this self-evident, but apparently it isn't. If you're planning on expanding the lede, then great; if not, I'll re-tag it and do it myself when I get round to it. Southern Premier Soccer League
Jon, We LOVE the work you do and feel especially proud that you have take the time to help correct our wiki pages. A quick update on the NPSL-SPSL situation. The NPSL version of events is not entirely accurate. Yes, we had 3 teams, and were expected, and scheduled to play with FC Tulsa as the 4th team. A legal issue between the two owners of the Tulsa team forced us into the situation of having to create a new league in order to play.
One serious by-law change from the NPSL to us, we are allowing professional players onto our rosters that are between contracts or loaned to our clubs. This gives upper division clubs the option to help rehab players in our league. Professional players have few options outside of reinstatement of amatuer status. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.108.219.223 (talk) 18:20, 28 September 2010 (UTC)
We are expecting to recieve provisional USASA approval to begin our season on Saturday. We are making a sizable investment to create the SPSL, and look forward to seeing it grow to include teams from all states in our region. At this point, there is no plan in place for any of our teams to join the NPSL for the 2011 season. Our plan for 2011-2012 is to play a FIFA natural season with as many as 40 matches over a ten month period. —Preceding unsigned comment added by StephenHeisler1966 (talk • contribs) 12:51, 28 September 2010 (UTC)
"Tier" vs. "division" in association football/soccer
I understand your comment about using the word "division" as opposed to "tier," but it is common on an international basis to refer to the various levels of a particular country's league hierarchy as tiers, as a synonym to "league," "division," "conference" and so on, especially when all three of those are in use in one country such as England. Don't get hung up on using "tier." It's done frequently in Wikipedia articles about national football organizations. - Realkyhick (Talk to me) 04:23, 29 September 2010 (UTC)
- Well, if every other article about US soccer teams uses "division," then a precedent has been established and let's stay with that for consistency's sake. Honestly, I don't have really string feelings on the matter. There may still be a bit of confusion, since the word "tier" is used in soccer hierarchy contexts in numerous other Wikipedia articles. But then again, American soccer in general has never been like that of other countries, for better or worse. - Realkyhick (Talk to me) 05:46, 29 September 2010 (UTC)

LA - Western Conference
Well I know that but looking at a few other pages like Robbie Findley for example, if the team makes the final, than add that in the individual honors. It's a little confusing when you have an honor from the regular season and another one has an honor from the playoffs, regarding the western/eastern conference that is. – Michael (talk) 20:22, 8 November 2010 (UTC)

I just started an honours section on Ruben Luna's profile. It's called Association Football not Soccer, We need to be re educated about the name
JonBroxton, The word soccer presents itself as ambiguous. You'll notice the current redirection when you type the word soccer back to " Association Football." Why not change the word Association Football to redirect to soccer while you're editing American players, who play for English Football teams. Clint Dempsey plays English Football, not American so called "soccer." Fulham is an English Football team, not a soccer team. He doesn't refer to the sport as soccer, unless he's speaking to an American, who has no clue to the real name football. Clint is definitely more of an authority on football than you and I. Alpha Order v. Position Order
Hello. You reverted my edit on the Philadelphia Union page where I ordered the players by position rather than by alpha order. I think it should go by order of position, not alpha order because whenever you have players without numbers, you arrange them by position. Take the Vancouver Whitecaps roster for example. Hi there JON, VASCO from Portugal here,
about your message to my anon IP: i did not insult User:Seabear84, i merely said the state of article was a bit shabby after his additions (we all make mistakes, no doubt about that), my choice of words was again poor, i'll admit it. Again, the pattern continues: i bust my ass - because i want to, no one forces me - trying to improve articles all over the place, i get NO WORDS at all. I step on the etiquette line a little bit, messages galore, incredible!
As you said "you have been told before", i also say i have told you this (at least i think i have): i have been told to "fuck off" and been called all the names in the book, and most of those users (i know because i checked their talkpage edit history) did not receive one single message/warning. I'm not entirely sure I agree with your logic as to why the PROD was removed, as it still seems a very blatant violation of WP:Crystal to me. However, seeing that you are far more experienced in the area than I am, can you point to me a discussion where a consensus backs up your declaration of a wide sweeping 'hang on'? I do believe something like that should be widely discussed first, whether as an AfD or on the footy project talk I'm not sure. I'll hang off going to AfD until I hear back from you. Thanks. Plural verbs in MLS articles
Hey Jon,
Just so you know, as I've gone and corrected you on multiple occasions, sports teams are an exception to the "singular veb for collective noun" usages of American English. Likely due to prevalence of plural nicknames, but that's the way it has been for over a hundred years, reading back through old newspaper accounts of baseball teams, right through the present with all major sports teams, including MLS teams. The same is true with using a "the" in front of most team names.
The sources were included on Talk:New York Red Bulls, including a 2010 Playoff preview from The New York Times. This is the clear majority usage in the US, and saying, for example "New York Red Bulls is" sounds odd and incorrect to this native AmEng speaker. So I'm changing the edits you've made. I greatly appreciate all the hard work you've done on MLS articles, but these changes were incorrect. Thanks for understanding. oknazevad (talk) 14:06, 2 February 2011 (UTC)

Once-a-year MLS Superdraft mass AfD nomination
Hi there (sorry about the rubbish title). I just wanted to say that I think your idea at the Bryan Meredith AfD is a great one, and that's despite the fact that I'm renown for erring on the side of deletion in the case of marginally notable biographies.
Do you reckon it's an approach that might be welcomed in other sports that use the draft system? Because on a larger scale, I think that's the best hope of your approach being adopted. I fear that in a football-only discussion, it might be shot down on the grounds that other sports don't do it. Regards, —WFC— 02:20, 6 February 2011 (UTC)
- Possible plan of action:
- Wait for the AfD to close. It appears to be heading for a no consensus at the moment.
- Create a userpage (for example User:JonBroxton/Draft picks) explaining your idea. Your point about the GNG and NFOOTBALL seemingly saying different things is a great one that definitely belongs in there.
- Get creative feedback from people who see value in the idea, so that the wording is as watertight as possible before it goes public.
- Move it to Wikipedia space (for example Wikipedia:Draft picks), and tag it as an essay.
- Link to the essay on the Wikiproject of the major draft sports, asking users for feedback on its talk page.
- See what happens.
- That seems a little long-winded, but I think it'd be worth it. At worst, your approach could be seen as a valid interpretation of current policy (as these guys technically pass the GNG), and therefore a valid essay. At best, there is a chance of it either becoming a guideline, or being incorporated into a guideline (such as NSPORTS). —WFC— 02:59, 6 February 2011 (UTC)

Kalif Alhassan
Hey, Jon. What do you think about moving Khalif Alhassan to Kalif Alhassan? I'm the one that created the page with the 'h' and I did it because that was the spelling already in use on the Liberty Professionals F.C. and Ghana national under-20 football team pages. It would seem his common name is sans h, though. DemonJuice (talk) 06:25, 19 February 2011 (UTC)

Once again, the Sounders' situation is not the same as the Whitecaps'
I knew you wouldn't accept reason so I don't know I bother talking to you, but the facts are simple. The Sounders didn't adopt the FC until the entered the MLS. That means there's a clear demarcation between the division 2 teams and the MLS teams. The Whitecaps adopted the moniker in 2003 and played eight seasons as the Vancouver Whitecaps FC. So you can't use the Sounders as a precedent. I might as well write gibberish because you won't change your mind. --Walter Görlitz (talk) 00:18, 12 March 2011 (UTC)

Hello! This is a note to let the main editors of this article know that it will be appearing as the main page featured article on March 19, 2011. Seattle Sounders FC is a Major League Soccer (MLS) team based in Seattle, Washington that plays its home matches at Qwest Field. It was established in November 2007 as an MLS expansion team. The league's 15th team; Sounders FC played the first match of its inaugural season on March 19, 2009. During their first two seasons every home game was sold out, they set a new MLS record for average match attendance, and they sold the most season tickets in the league. Seattle finished both seasons with a winning record and qualified for the MLS playoffs. In 2009 Sounders FC became the second expansion team in MLS history to win the U.S. Open Cup, and in 2010 became the first ever MLS team to repeat as Open Cup champions. Fans selected the Sounders name for the club through an online poll in 2008, making the Seattle Sounders FC the third Seattle soccer team to bear the moniker. (more...)

Do you have any evidence they'll be in the NW Division? The NPSL schedule would seem to indicate otherwise since the SW Division teams are playing home and home series against the other SW teams this year and only single games against NW teams. The SW teams I've checked are all playing a home and home against Hollywood. Gateman1997 (talk) 23:11, 21 March 2011 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Template:Usmnt
A tag has been placed on Template:Usmnt, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:
Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hang on}}
to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion, or "db", tag; if no such tag exists, then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hang-on tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. — This, that, and the other (talk) 11:22, 25 March 2011 (UTC)

The list is in violation of WP:LISTPEOPLE so what do you suggest is done ? Mtking (talk) 02:20, 5 April 2011 (UTC)
- Ignore the rule, as per WP:IGNOREALLRULES, if following the rule makes Wikipedia a less useful resource. As I said on the BYU discussion page, this list, and lists like it, are vitally important to editors who work on minor-league American soccer articles. The USL does not keep a searchable historical record of players who have played for PDL teams, which means that complete career histories for players that played in the PDL prior to them playing in MLS (or another professional league) are almost impossible to keep track of. Having a record of these players via these roster lists allows editors to keep track of the player's minor-league career via the "what links here" function, when articles are created for the players in question. Deleting this list would rob US football editors of the only - and I genuinely mean ONLY - way of tracking these players early careers, resulting in incomplete stats boxes, incomplete career histrories, and less complete biographies. I'm writing here because you appear to be the most active contributor on the NPSL pages where I've chosen to take part. I've decided to make the 2011 NPSL season page a regular project of mine for observation and update so this post is to inform you of that intent. Notability is not inherited. The league is notable, but Hicham Aâboubou is not. I repeat notability is NOT inherited. Just because someone plays in a notable league does not make them notable. All-time <Insert name of PLD team> roster
Following on from Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/All-time BYU Cougars men's soccer roster, what do you think should be done the other pages. If you want to go through the AfD on them that happy to nominate them, but you can save everyone a lot of time if after you have created a user page you add {{db-author}} on them.
Let me know Mtking (talk) 05:46, 27 April 2011 (UTC)
- When the 2011 PDL season starts in a couple of weeks, each team's roster for 2011 will be updated with new players, and the 2010 players will be moved over to the all-time pages. What I was planning to do is, when I update each team's main page, I was going to create a userfied version of each of the all-time rosters, and then do what you said with the db-author. It's going to take me a while, because there are 60+ of them to go through, but you don't need to do AfDs for them. I'll work my way through them as the season progresses, make sure I don't lose any info, and then delete them as I go. JonBroxton (talk) 07:28, 27 April 2011 (UTC)
- I am happy to help if you would like me to take a couple of conference's, it may be better to move the pages (so the history is kept) and then have the re-direct deleted. Mtking (talk) 09:04, 27 April 2011 (UTC)

Not sure why the year by year table is needed if it's not to be used for current record. Perhaps it would be a good idea to add to that table past records in Austin since it has substantial overlap of ownership group and players. --Trödel 17:02, 5 May 2011 (UTC)
- I just think it looks really odd to have a table with no information in it - it should be commented out until the end of the season if its to be blank. Secondly, I'm not sure if there is a standard that you are pointing out since many English FC teams do not have such a table. I really don't see a consensus to only have the full record in there other than its easier to maintain - with which I agree, and thus would support only have full year team records put in the table. My only objection is that the table looks dumb just sitting there with nothing in it. --Trödel 13:41, 6 May 2011 (UTC)

- I really can't believe how quickly this list has come together. Usually I post requests for collaboration on WP:Footy and get no response. 03md 03:28, 20 May 2011 (UTC)
- Can you have a play with the descriptions that I have put for "Game of Two Halves", "Cliche", "Soccer" and "El Clasico" to see if you can tighten them up a bit. They may need references as well. 03md 04:35, 20 May 2011 (UTC)

Re: PDL team infoboxes
Hahaha! Well I can understand that, and I was a bit hesitant to do a couple navboxes for some PDL teams, so I started with PDL teams that were professional at one point. But I guess I did ones for PDL franchises like West Texas United Sockers, cause I thought it would be easier for the handful of people reading the entry to navigate through related club content. D.C. United
User:Quidster4040, who's put in a lot of work on United's season articles and the new article on their history, started a D.C. United task force today, and I figure that might be something you'd want to get involved in! I'm definitely looking to finishing bringing the article up to featured quality, up to the standard of the other great European clubs, and you've really been great with the roster and with statistics. I've been surprised though that you've undone recent edits I've made without much ado, and if we want to make this sort of push, then I need to know that we're working together. For example, with the list of stadiums, I think that works fine as a paragraph, and it follows the MOS recommendation for presenting lists as prose when possible. Having a list like that makes it seem like the team has had five different stadiums, when these were just one off instances, and I don't know of another team that lists their appearances in this way. Let's try to use the talk page and the new task force page to talk about how we're working on improving the article.-- Patrick, oѺ∞ 02:20, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
- I understand that you've added these lists to most of the MSL teams, but I'm not sure they need to be so prominently highlighted if the team just played one game there fifteen years ago. I want to improve D.C.'s article to the level of an Arsenal F.C. or Chelsea F.C., or other soccer FAs, and that's where I'm looking for standards in how to organize D.C. United. I'd like to be working on this article more in the future, so can you bring reverts first to a discussion here or elsewhere?-- Patrick, oѺ∞ 03:49, 29 May 2011 (UTC)

Josh Wolff
Hey there. Last week, 69.254.136.155 edited Josh Wolff to correct a mistake in the international goals table. You reverted this accurate edit on the grounds that it was unsourced. Unfortunately, your edit, also unsourced, reintroduced the mistake to Wikipedia. I found a source online, referenced it in the article, and corrected the error.
Your user page and history indicate that you contribute a great deal to Wikipedia, contributions that allow us mere browsers to enjoy a valuable source of information. On the other side, there are users like me, who occasionally make edits to articles when they identify errors. In doing so, they may not adhere to the conventions observed by more experienced editors, such as failing to provide a citation. Most of these edits are in good faith and make important contributions to Wikipedia (e.g., by correcting a hard-to-spot mistake). If the edit is not sourced to your satisfaction, and the material being changed is likewise not sourced, might I suggest attempting to verify the correct facts instead of blindly reverting the edit? This would improve the accuracy of Wikipedia while demonstrating more respect for the contributor.

RGV Ocelots FC Revision
This user is not an employee of the franchise, and as such, there is no conflict of interest. The information has been researched extensively as opposed to the information that you have previously posted. I would like to clarify that RGV Coyotes SC has more to do with the current Ocelots FC franchise than RGV Bravos does on many different levels.
History The details surrounding the formation of the team are an integral part of the franchise's creation. Those details include the state of soccer in the region at the time (the loss of the Pan Am men's soccer program at the time, etc.). It is a well documented fact (more sources to come) that the current owner of the Ocelots also owned the Coyotes. It is also a well documented fact that none of the teams from the region had players from across the region. It would be irresponsible to say that there was no soccer in the Valley and that no one could possibly have the brain power to attempt to achieve anything beyond local amateur soccer. The historical section sheds light on the fact that there was soccer life before the USL came to town--and that was attributed in part by the Coyotes' activities over the course of six years. The Bravos did the rest on their own four years later (There is nothing in the post that disputes that.)
1.) Only someone from the region would know the state of soccer in his home region to know what to research.
The history posted on the Official website has been quoted verbatim and substatiated and verified with the proper citations. This should have addressed any COI and bias issues. The research yielded the following information:
1.) The Coyotes were in fact, the first franchise to actively seek participation and even helped try to promote the then USISL in the Rio Grande Valley market in an effort to stimulate interest in a future franchise and interest in the League itself. NOTE: The climate of the day in the soccer community was that the only leagues that mattered were everywhere else but the United States. Imagine trying to sell an American brand (USISL/USL) to people that have grown up watching the Mexican First Division Soccer--especially on the Border? That climate remains today regardless of American league presence in the Valley. Valley soccer fans are finicky and discriminatory because they are used to seeing a high caliber of soccer.
2.) The Coyotes were owned and coached by current Ocelots FC owner Kru Kayan Sitsanthaparn. 3.) The Coyotes actually played against USISL/USL teams during their existence from 1998-2004. 4.) The Coyotes colors were orange, white, silver, and black.
All of the facts point to an evolution, and a lucky break in the form of a failing Bravos franchise, for the current owner to take the reins of the Bravos franchise, and jump back into the sport.
However, to state that the Ocelots were originally founded as the Bravos is a complete falsehood because of the following (make sure to read the Ocelots FC citations!):
1.) The USL would not allow the owner to keep team name, logos, franchise marks (see source). 2.) The fact that the owner purchased a franchise with the SPSL does not leave any room for the "same" franchise to legally continue on. Therefore, RGV Bravos FC "died." The Ocelots FC franchise was new as were the mascot and logo (see source). The owner, deciding to bring back the former project, adopted the former Coyotes colors in homage and as a reminder of the hard work done in the past (see source). All of the aforementioned is now privately owned as opposed to the Bravos name, etc. which was owned by the League. 3.) The current franchise did not continue in the same League and change names--although it was already being contemplated (see source). Had Ocelots FC continued in the PDL and made the change from Bravos to Ocelots, then it could safely be stated that the Ocelots were founded as the Bravos, but that isn't the case.
However, in terms of "facts" your lack of research on this subject matter leaves much to be desired. For example:
1.) Your previous information still listed Juan de Dios Garcia as the Head Coach of this team when it was announced in February that Juan Macias. 2.) You posted a questionable reason for the discontinuation of the franchise with the PDL by citing rgvfutbol.com as a credible source of information. The rgvfutbol.com website is owned and operated by Ed Chrnko Salas, a former employee of the Bravos franchise and former colleague of RGV Grandes FC owner, Ignacio Larraga. The mere fact that he would write such a negative story against his former team given the circumstances of his departure, constitutes a conflict of interest that would undoubtedly yield biased information.
FYI: Prior to his involvement with Bravos FC, Ed Chrnko Salas wrote the stories that are cited in the RGV Ocelots FC reference list when he was a journalist for La Frontera covering the RGV Coyotes SC.
3.) Who is your source that prompted you to state that Sitsanthaparn was an interim owner? My sources bring conflicting information.
All in all, the RGV Bravos FC should have its own page as a defunct franchise as the Ocelots are not a continuation. All of those matters have nothing to do with Ocelots FC. The only note that the RGV Bravos FC should have with regard to this topic is that it brought the owner back into the sport after he had left it behind in 2004 and/or that he personally congratulated the Bravos FC staff (source pending).
Again, this is not bias. These are facts that have been posted for people to learn about soccer in our region and the history of Ocelots FC. Please be sure to check your sources before posting. I have seen Laredo Heat's wikipedia page, and they dont have a SINGLE citation--while practically EVERY sentence in my posting is cited with a source to verify. It's irresponsible to say that I'm being biased when the statements are quoted straight from the Official Website and there are citations for all of them.
Thanks for your prompt response. Neither do I have a relationship with this team--although I do live in the Valley region. The Ocelots are getting some good results and gaining a decent following, so naturally, given the research that I've done, it should be known that the current franchise (like so many others across the country) has a rich history behind it that should be preserved for posterity.
Ocelots FC should be a separate page since it is a completely new entity. The Bravos page should be kept separately as RGV Bravos FC. If I'm not mistaken, it's already split into two, and I've left one of them alone. The best bet is to keep one page as it is and the newer page to remain as RGV Ocelots FC.
My apologies for any misunderstandings and thanks again for your cooperation Ocelots FC (talk) 05:13, 4 June 2011 (UTC).
Thanks for your cooperation. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ocelots FC (talk • contribs) 04:52, 4 June 2011 (UTC)

Info box
With regard to my deletion of the infobox image, I thought I would give you the courtesy of explaining my actions. These pictures are rarely used in football player infoboxes anymore but now and again I find the odd few kicking around in minor articles such as Anthony Peters. Often I have noticed they get removed by other editor's as they look a little tacky. It's my opinion but appreciate your input and understand your concern about copyrighted uploads, but if you look around on many other football articles that do not feature a photo, they do not include these images. Vancouver Whitecaps Residency
I have been meaning to take a closer look at this because the Vancouver Whitecap's website refers to the team as U-23 and they also have a Residency U18 and U16 team from what I can tell. Additionally USL is now refering to them as U23. So I think we need to move the Residency page to U23 but create a new page called residency that describes the Whitecaps multi-team program better. Orphaned non-free media (File:Boulderrapids.jpg)
Thanks for uploading File:Boulderrapids.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 04:03, 22 October 2012 (UTC)

The article Idaho Wolves has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- No evidence of meeting WP:NFOOTBALL or WP:GNG
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Secret account 00:24, 20 March 2013 (UTC)

Boxer Stadium
JonBroxton can you help me with a soccer stadium in San Francisco. You uploaded a great overhead photo of
in 2008 and I want to do the same for Boxer Stadium and am having problems. NASA World Wind doesn't have enough data and http://msrmaps.com is a wiki copyright violation. Any suggestions?
