New Mexico State Penitentiary riot

I notice that you changed the edit I made years ago. I watched the Timewatch programme and I remember what I heard and saw because the descriptions of depravity and cruelty have lasted with me for a long time. I notice that you react without hesitation to a person who purports to be from the New Mexico State police because they object to something that does not make their organisation look good. Who are they? Where are their credentials? They show their own POV i.e. they don't like it and you go along with it. The police sat back and let the evil men carve up the weak and vulnerable. The guy who made these assertions on the programme had to wipe tears from his eye because of guilt. A version of what happened is all here... in this book (bottom of page 100). The state police could see the inmates inside but did not act. The ex sniper was just telling it how it was. And you deleted it. Took me all of a minute to find the evidence to support what I heard even though I cannot find the exact link to show.

And you deleted it because someone (with a purported authority) didn't like what it implies. The alleged ex cop also admits they were only there after the fact? How did they know? They don't? And you don't? Because it's quite clear they carved people up with blowtorches there are even academic articles on the subject.

I have no need for self importance to be an editor, a big cheese etc all I am interested in is information. You should take this an edifying experience. I have proven my case but do you have the balls to change/revert my edit? Don't worry I won't because I take no pleasure from this, it's not about feeling superior it's about being right. I have verified that someone saw the incidents and that person who I know to be a State trooper said it all in an interview on a TV show back in the 90s. The person who doesn't like it should prove now how that is wrong! Besides considering the entire prison was surrounded by the police (or even the National Guard), who else is likely to been watching the cell blocks intently except the authorities. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 109.155.77.90 (talk) 01:49, 22 November 2010 (UTC)

No, absolutely not. I removed the words "a former State Police marksman" only because they were not backed up by a link to a reliable source; as it says at the top of the article, "Unsourced material may be challenged and removed". Is the Timewatch program or its transcript available anywhere? If you can provide a full source for the quote, please add it to the article; and if the source shows that it was written by a former police marksman please put those words back too. Or, if you have other sources that demonstrate that a "State Police marksman" was present, feel free to add that information to the article. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:23, 22 November 2010 (UTC)

Cardiac output

Cardiac output (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) I might be a little lost now as this seems to have something to do with grammar school and not Cardiac output. I only intended to delete the current version of flotrac and replace it with an updated version of which I have only been able to see a portion therefore I am not sure that occurred . I would love an editor to look at my article and offer suggestions . this is my first attempt. sincerely WMcGee (talk) 20:55, 24 November 2010 (UTC)

I've restored the section that went missing. I'm not sure that I can comment on the paragraph; it needs an expert in the subject, I think. -- John of Reading (talk) 21:14, 24 November 2010 (UTC)

"Thanks–—For The Hiero Code!" plus an enlarged dye sample mystery

What you provided at the Tahash talk page is what I wish I had known at the beginning, but I'm new to Wiki. Your help is really appreciated. I'm simply going to "plagerize" the work you did, just to get the great-looking table you constructed onto the article page. Then I'll study the method. To answer your speculation, I'm not aware that I used the enlarge feature during the Egyptian edits, unless the fact that I enlarged the page in a different place and at a different time (to make sure I got the Arabic characters that matched those provided at the English-Arabic dictionary) is the cause.

Just a few moments ago, after checking out your comment on the talk page and going back to the article, I noticed that the sample image of the indigo dye in the Addax section was much larger (the frame was not). It's a distinct improvement, but no entry for it appears in "view history". Any idea what did it? I haven't been using the enlarge function today. It just occurred to me that the 24-hour wait might apply, allowing whatever glitch that causes these things to revert back. I think now that if I'd left the original misalignment alone that it would have resolved itself later (and saved me a headache), just as my attempt to shorten the lengthened line later resulted in a short misalignment that I had to "undo". Appreciate your support! --Michael Paul Heart (talk) 23:32, 24 November 2010 (UTC)

I wouldn't have been able to write that formatting from scratch, I just noticed that the symbols at Help:WikiHiero syntax were nicely aligned and wondered how it was done. And, of course, it's not plagiarism to copy the text from the talk page, since I put it there for you to check and use.
For future glitches in the image formatting, I suggest you bypass your cache and purge the page before trying to correct anything. Sometimes those steps will fix the problem for you. -- John of Reading (talk) 09:34, 25 November 2010 (UTC)
Appreciate the suggestions. The larger image of the dye sample turned out to be a coincidence and had nothing to do with the issue I asked about. It was apparently enlarged at the accessible source as an improvement, and the link at Tahash simply took the new version. It hadn't occurred to me to check the source of a linked and retrieved image, but it will occur to me from now on. Hoo-Rah! You guys are good! Stay safe. --Michael Paul Heart (talk) 13:39, 25 November 2010 (UTC)

Old Perth Technical School

Hi, I think there were some flaws in your 25 November edit here which I have amended and would like you to check, please. Cheers, Bjenks (talk) 14:27, 25 November 2010 (UTC)

This morning I was working through a long list of articles containing the text "in April 15", "in April 16" and so on, and changing most of them to say "on" instead. That's all I did to the Old Perth Technical School article, and I think it was a correct fix. I didn't read the whole paragraph. If you look at my contributions you'll get the idea. -- John of Reading (talk) 15:15, 25 November 2010 (UTC)
Aha. Sorry, I didn't look back further but now I see that the number error (2117 instead of 2116) was there earlier. 2117 is the next-door Old Perth Boys School building. Someone also failed to change the tense of "is listed" to "was listed on...". Cheers Bjenks (talk) 16:25, 25 November 2010 (UTC)

Village cricket

Hello John, could you take look at Village cricket please. Particularly the insertion of the word 'cement'. This appears to be vandalism that would be easy to fix. However the whole tenor of the article relates to 'village cricket in England', and the person who is altering this page seems to have an agenda to write an article on 'village cricket in India', to which I have no objection. But I think it needs an article of its own if he proceeds. Yvain, or The Knight with the Lion

Dear John:

I appreciate that you cannot accept original research, and I don't really care that my paragraph about the issue of the proper translation of the title of Chretien's Yvain and its implications for interpretation is not acceptable, but what I said about the translation itself is not original research, it is a fact. Every other translator I know, except for Burton Raffel, rightly translates "au" as "with" (check William Kibler, Ruth Harwood Cline, even the old W.W. Comfort). If Chretien had wanted it to be "of," he would have used "du." This is a distinction that was true in Old French and is still true today, as any Frenchman would affirm. Every medieval French scholar and Arthurian is aware of the proper translation of "au" in this context, so much so that nobody has needed to write about it. Nevertheless, every time Wikipedia translates the title as The Knight of the Lion, both in the article on the romance and in the article on Chretien de Troyes, it is perpetuating an error.

Thank you. Alanbaragona (talk) 17:35, 21 December 2010 (UTC) Professor of English and Fine Arts VMI

Follow up

You advised me to be bold with the Leigh-on-Sea article. I removed the sentences that I considered dubious, and suggested where to look for evidence that might enable their restoration. I focused on Leigh-on-Sea because when I started editing WP I used places I lived in for practice. I persisted, because I find doing this can be very instructive. I have done what I want with Leigh-on-Sea. I put some suggestions in the Southend-on-Sea discussion, and may follow up when material from the local museum reaches me by email, if I am still a WP editor.

I comment here on three of the many articles I have looked at:

1. The Peter Demos article does not consist of well formed English sentences and is unclear. I cannot make out what it means well enough to correct the grammar.

2. The Scientific citation article is very misleading (I put comments in Discussion and other discussants are critical) I think it should be flagged accordingly (but I do not know if there is a template for this) or deleted (there is a WP article with a similar name but "for beginners" that is excellent)

3. The Crystal growth article likewise.

I think I did a useful job with J. B. Gunn. However, I have wasted considerable time on the Royal Radar Establishment article because an administrator moved out names of several people who were described as "eminent" in a paper in a Royal Society publication, because I did not demonstrate notability for them. If notability is made a requirement for someone to be mentioned it is unrealistic for me to spend more time on WP. Michael P. Barnett (talk) 02:04, 23 December 2010 (UTC)

I am very impressed with the detail you have put into your comments on the various talk pages. I suggest that you might enjoy getting involved at Wikipedia:Requests for feedback, the page where editors ask for feedback on articles they are writing. I have just a few comments on your comments:
  1. I agree that the text at Peter Demos read strangely. On a hunch I tried a Google search and quickly found that it was copied directly from an MIT web page. I have therefore removed the text as a copyright violation and have warned the editor who added it.
  2. For 'name space clash' see WP:REDLINK.
  3. For the list of article tags such as the {{Refimprove}} that I used, see Wikipedia:Template messages.
  4. If you write an explanation on a talk page and then make a bold edit to the article, it would be safer to mention the talk page in your edit summary: "Restoring the list of names, see talk page", or similar.
  5. Kudpung is a very experienced editor but not, in fact, an administrator. At Wikipedia, the administrators have a few extra buttons to press - they can delete articles and block users, for example - but they do not have extra rights over the content of the articles. That is for all the editors to agree on.
Thank you for asking me for feedback. I am neither an administrator nor an experienced editor - mostly, I just fix typos and try to respond to "help" requests. Which is how I got involved at Leigh-on-Sea... -- John of Reading (talk) 15:18, 23 December 2010 (UTC)

I can be emailed through this link BUT I'd prefer you didn't do this. I am not an administrator, and don't have the rights (or the experience) to help you deal with the issues you raised.
The administrator User:Phantomsteve (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) was active on the help desks yesterday, and can be emailed through this link. Or pick another administrator from this list. -- John of Reading (talk) 08:45, 15 January 2011 (UTC)
My apology. I will not write to your email account. My email and my real name was outed in the page I linked. I don't really know what to do with this because it is happening outside of wikipedia but the wikipedia username of the person who have done the outing is pretty obvious from looking at editing history of the article and the talk page. Is there any wikipedia page which specifically deal with this matter? I would like to talk to an admin who is active in such page. And thanks for your help. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.210.252.236 (talk) 11:16, 15 January 2011 (UTC)

You haven't asked...

...but would you like reviewer status? I've glanced through your contribs, and you seem quite qualified, and there's no reason you need pending revision review for stuff like this. :D If you don't mind, let me know, and I'll just toggle the switch. If for some reason you'd prefer not (or don't qualify) just let me know. Or don't answer. :) I won't be presumptive and flip the switch if you don't want it. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 15:15, 16 January 2011 (UTC)

Thank you for suggesting this.
From what I've read, it wouldn't make much difference, as I won't often stumble across an article with pending changes that have not been accepted. The bulk of my edits are made through AWB, and I won't even realise that the article has pending changes protection or has unaccepted revisions.
I assume that an AWB edit by a reviewer doesn't automatically mark the previous revision as "accepted"? - that would be a big mistake, because I'm only looking at the diff for the edit I'm about to save.
But, subject to that, yes, let's try it. It would give me some new ways to help the project. -- John of Reading (talk) 15:42, 16 January 2011 (UTC)
I assume it doesn't either, but I will ask somebody who knows more about the technical workings of Wikipedia than I do. :) In the meantime, I've toggled the switch. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 15:54, 16 January 2011 (UTC)

Can you try editing the Robert Garside page? I made a change under my doppelganger account. I've asked others not to approve it, though there's always a possibility somebody will. :) It's a constructive change; I removed a redundant wikilink. We can see if it's automatically approved or not. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 21:36, 16 January 2011 (UTC)
That seems to be ok; both your edit and my AWB edit are marked as needing review. -- John of Reading (talk) 21:42, 16 January 2011 (UTC)

Great! So if there's nothing pending, your review should be automatically accepted (I would guess). If there is something pending, it'll still get review. :) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 21:43, 16 January 2011 (UTC)

Forgive me for butting in, I was at J.delanoy's page and suddenly became very nosy! If the article is using PC level 1 (the level that is overwhelmingly the most common), then any edits from confirmed or autoconfirmed editors are automatically accepted. Only edits from IPs and brand new accounts need to be accepted (which is what the reviewer permission is for). In the case of an article using PC level 2 (I would be very surprised if there were any), only reviewers' edits are accepted automatically and edits by anyone who doesn't have reviewer or admin rights have to be accepted by a reviewer (or an admin). I hope this clears up the mystery! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 01:23, 17 January 2011 (UTC)

(I have wanted to start a missive like that for a long time - just to see what it feels like.)

Thank you. Thank you for making me feel so welcome, for taking the time to write me a short direct useful non-bot note.

I, too, would give you a medal - were I entitled to do so here on Wikipedia.

Thanks, too, for the external link. Looks fascinating, though I am not sure how many chess cells are left in my brain.

And, thanks, thrice for the fascinating introduction to Steven, John of Reading - who, apparently, has continued to be so influential for the past 7 or so centuries that you have titled yourself after him and, still, there are so many devotees that you have not felt impelled to put your well-skilled editing hand to the Wikipedia article about him.

And, finally, sorry to take up so much space here and time in your life, leading nowhere but to this fountain of thanks.

Steven — Preceding unsigned comment added by Blumrosen (talkcontribs) 13:39, 25 January 2011 (UTC)

I'm glad to have made such a difference to your start at Wikipedia! Please feel free to ask me about anything.
Yes, I am John and I live in Reading. My "handle" was originally a small homage to John Reading (composer), with a nod in the direction of Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Only later did I discover the philosopher; and only after I'd signed up at Wikipedia a year ago did I discover that he had an article here.
For medals at Wikipedia, see Wikipedia:Barnstars, and anyone can give them. But your copious thanks are ample reward! -- John of Reading (talk) 14:27, 25 January 2011 (UTC)

build -> built

Hi, John,

I imagine you're finding plenty to do, but I ran across 600+ errors of "was build " -> "was built " and thought of you. I think it is worth adding to AWB and I'm sure you could do that easier than I could. It is mostly in English as second language articles, but not exclusively. I have done almost 300 instances and found very few false positives (mostly stuff like "was in build number 42 of the software that incorporated..." though you do need to include a trailingspace: "build " in order to avoid "he was building" being changed to "he was builting". If you want to get a feel for it, work backwards from "Z" on the sort. There seems to be some work in "was rebuild" as well, but I haven't gone there yet. Same with the other verb tenses of both.

Best regards. Hope you are well and happy. --LilHelpa (talk) 17:00, 28 January 2011 (UTC)

Now there's a co-incidence. In my other window here I have a list of articles containing "to built", which has to be corrected to "to build", "to be built", or something else according to the context. The phrase "was build" is in Wikipedia:Lists_of_common_misspellings/Grammar and Misc so I will get round to it eventually. -- John of Reading (talk) 17:08, 28 January 2011 (UTC)
Heh.. pretty good coincidence. -LilHelpa (talk) 17:48, 28 January 2011 (UTC)

Template:stationyears

John, re this edit - please note that since the sole function of is to categorise the article, it should go among (or after) the categories, just in case there is a {{DEFAULTSORT:}} in operation. --Redrose64 (talk) 17:37, 30 January 2011 (UTC)

According to Help:DEFAULTSORT#Default sort key, the DEFAULTSORT will take effect even it is placed after the call to the {{stationyears}} template. I have just verified this using a copy of Clubmoor railway station in my sandbox.
If you still need the template to remain at the end of the articles that use it, I will have to ask at Wikipedia talk:AutoWikiBrowser, as I think it would need a software change for it to recognise that this template is to be treated specially. -- John of Reading (talk) 20:52, 30 January 2011 (UTC)
Seems you're right. However, reading down that page a bit further I am directed to WP:CAT#Categorization using templates where it seems that templates such as {{stationyears}} are Not a Good Thing. Should I raise a WP:TFD? --Redrose64 (talk) 21:22, 30 January 2011 (UTC)
I suggest instead that you quietly update the documentation at {{stationyears}} and move on to your next task... -- John of Reading (talk) 21:30, 30 January 2011 (UTC)

Regarding FYROM

Well the name 'Republic of Macedonia' is illegal, since it is refered by NATO,UN and Europe as FYROM(former yugoslavian republic of macedonia). Wouldn't this mean you are breaking international laws and not respecting the rights of the Greeks, since the refognised name Macedonia refers to the region in greece? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.156.201.171 (talk) 21:57, 2 February 2011 (UTC)

This has been discussed at great length by the Wikipedia community. I wasn't part of the discussions, and had to search around to find the naming page to work out what to do with your edits. If you wish to re-open the discussions or comment on them, I think your best bet would be to post at Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (Macedonia)/Naming. -- John of Reading (talk) 22:05, 2 February 2011 (UTC)

Under Spin Offs

In the documentary "The Stuart House Recordings" one of the now vanished inhabitants Miyuki Isihikawa, the infamous serial murderer is discovered to have lived in Himuro Manison prior to moving to Stuart House in southren Louisana. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dragon82aa (talkcontribs) 14:46, 3 February 2011

Now I've looked more closely, I don't think this link is appropriate for the Fatal Frame article.
  1. This URL shows me a page with only two sentences of text on it, with no mention of Fatal Frame, Himuro Mansion or Miyuki Isihikawa. You cannot use it to confirm a link between the Stuart House Recordings and the Fatal Frame article.
  2. Even if you did find a reliable source to confirm the link, it is only a very weak link and is hardly worth mentioning on the Fatal Frame page. If the film "The Stuart House Recordings" is ever notable enough to have its own Wikipedia article, then that would be the appropriate place to discuss its plot.

Can you help me

Please help me If you can... — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gunel Mustafayeva (talkcontribs) 10:44, 8 February 2011 (UTC)

Please see Wikipedia:Portal, and especially "The idea of a portal is to help readers and/or editors navigate their way through Wikipedia topic areas". For example, the Africa Portal acts as a gateway to the hundreds/thousands of Wikipedia articles on African topics. The Hamlet Isakhanli Portal, on the other hand, is a re-arrangement of the material from just one Wikipedia article.
My request for deletion will be reviewed by an administrator. If the portal is deleted and you wish to challenge the decision, you should start by reading the page 'Why was my page deleted' -- John of Reading (talk) 10:51, 8 February 2011 (UTC)

New article - submission declined

Hi John,

Thank you for your prompt review of our question earlier today (Intense Technologies Limited).

Per you, I revisited your guidelines on posting articles. Ours is a new setup after entities changed. We are still in the process of making that "giant leap" into markets. You'd, therefore, appreciate that we may not have too many references of third party sites to talk about us yet.

However, we'd still want to be on Wiki given the following it enjoys amongst our clientele and prospects. We can ill-afford staying away from this circuit at this point.

Hence, need all your help in suggesting alternatives.

```` — Preceding unsigned comment added by Intense Technology (talkcontribs) 09:18, 23 February 2011 (UTC)
I'm afraid you need to find a different website entirely; the page Wikipedia:Alternative outlets may help you with this.
Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, with articles on topics that are already notable; it is not a means of advertising or promotion. If your company takes off and people start writing about it in the news, either someone will write a Wikipedia article about it, or you will be able to make a more successful submission at Articles for creation. -- John of Reading (talk) 09:26, 23 February 2011 (UTC)
Bogatell
I saw your posting at Requests for Feedback and took a look at the article. I'm responding here, because if I post on RFF, it might discourage some other editors from looking as well. Really a problem child here, perhaps more for attitude than the article itself. I will try reformatting some of the references. Then maybe I will read them if I can. The "TTB" wikilink leads to nowhere. The See also is not in a section. The tone is largely promotional. Yet there might be sufficient notability for a properly written article. The article needs to be tagged about these issues. On COI, WP:COI doesn't require disclosure. Personally I wish it did. Maybe there's another guidance page that does. Tkotc (talk) 03:47, 26 February 2011 (UTC)
Thank you. I confess I didn't know what to do! -- John of Reading (talk) 09:46, 26 February 2011 (UTC)
Help with references
Hi John! I was searching for information about physiscs behind EDM and reading wikipedia page I found that you contributed a lot there. I also have seen that one of the references that i was looking for was listed, the Thesis of Frans Van Dijck. Is it possible for you to send me a copy of that work? If you can help me, please send me an email: [details removed]. I am working on a PHd on the subject and that reference is really important to me.
Thanks in advance. Golsouza —Preceding unsigned comment added by 200.128.7.66 (talk) 18:40, 10 March 2011 (UTC)
Are you sure? I may have fixed a few typos, but I haven't contributed any substantial content to any physics articles. I'll happily try some Google or Wikipedia searches for you, but so far I haven't worked out which article and reference you mean. Sorry! -- John of Reading (talk) 18:59, 10 March 2011 (UTC)
Well, Sorry John! I made a mistake when searching for information on wikipedia, but I think maybe you can help me. I'm searching for the Thesis of Frans Van Dijck on EDM and I saw that this work is the 15th reference of the EDM article of wikipedia. How can I find the person that wrote that part of the text (section: Material removal mechanism)? Maybe the one that inserted that reference in the text can send me a copy of the work of Van Dijck. Thanks! Golsouza —Preceding unsigned comment added by 200.128.7.66 (talk) 21:23, 10 March 2011 (UTC)
I was looking at Electric dipole moment! Looking through the history of Electrical discharge machining, I find that the thesis reference was added in this 2009 edit by Cemaf. You could try leaving a message at User talk:Cemaf, but this editor has made no edits here since last September, so might not see it. If you don't get a response that way, I suggest you register an account with email enabled, and then you will be able to send an email to Cemaf using the "Email this user" link. -- John of Reading (talk) 21:42, 10 March 2011 (UTC)
Great! Thanks for your help John! I already have an account and I will try to contact Cemaf. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Golsouza (talkcontribs) 02:28, 13 March 2011 (UTC)
Greetings, fellow Gnome!
I was fixing a bunch of 'lead' -> 'led' when I saw that you were doing the same thing. You may be surprised that only today, after 85,000+ edits, I requested approval to use AWB. This was before I saw that you were hot on the trail of the same quarry. I would like to thank you in advance for your subpage 'Typo fixing with AutoWikiBrowser', which will undoubtedly save me much time and many missteps as I start to use AWB. However, I was left wondering how you found some of the incorrect uses of 'lead'. I have been searching for phrases such as "she lead her" that have few false positives. If you are just doing a brute-force search for 'lead', more power to you! If you would like to exchange tricks and information, I'm in favor of that, too. I have been grinding away at 'this lead to', and have nearly 400 left to fix, so the idea of using AWB really started to take hold today. Happy editing! Chris the speller (talk) 00:49, 12 March 2011 (UTC)
Yes, we should be taking to each other! So far I've only been in touch with LilHelpa.
For "lead by" I used the AWB database scanner to find all the articles that match the regular expression "\blead\s+by\b". There were about 4000 of them, which was rather daunting, but I got AWB to skip many of them efficiently. I've added a new section to User:John of Reading/Typo fixing with AutoWikiBrowser to describe how I do this. I've also dumped a copy of my AWB settings into my sandbox so that you can have a look. (Click "Edit", grab the text after the "nowiki", save it into a local file with a .xml extension, and ask AWB to open it).
That file doesn't have my latest set of "Find & Replace" settings for "the the". I must get round to consolidating the various different settings files I'm using for different jobs. -- John of Reading (talk) 13:14, 12 March 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for your edits on Karma in Hinduism. I started that article because many people believe in the Buddhist view of karma which does not involved the role of God. Hindus believe that we are responsible for generating our good/bad karma but God ultimately is the One who is responsible for dispensing karma. Buddhists, on the other hand, believe that karma is like the law of gravity which does not require God. God bless. Raj2004 (talk) 02:03, 20 March 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for your message about the external link in heat map section. iMapbuilder is a software product which can be used to create heat maps -- as a matter of fact, many of our users including users from school and corporations, have already used iMapBuilder to create heat maps for their different projects.
There are different types of heat maps, the particular type of heat map iMapBuilder creates is very useful for data visualization purpose. It provides an useful tool for users who need to create this type of heat map. Therefore it is not off topic for the related link to be posted on this page.
If required, we can provide samples of heat maps created for your reference. We believe including this link can help many users to find a tool which are suitable for their usage. It is definitely not a spam.
Maybe it would be more appropriate to modify the link to point directly to a heat map sample on the website? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.198.150.93 (talk) 05:03, 22 March 2011 (UTC)
No, if I saw this being used in an article, and it had an "edit" link, then I'd expect the edit link to take me to a page containing the data for that table, not to the page containing the messy details of the table formatting. -- John of Reading (talk) 20:02, 24 March 2011 (UTC)
