Why I don't edit any more

I started contributing to Wikipedia because of the Gutenberg Authors project. This project proposed to provide a page for authors published on Project Gutenberg who were not yet represented on Wikipedia. I thought this a worthwhile goal, because many of the authors were old, out-of-print, and obscure. That's what one goes to an encyclopedia to research. However, I see the DELETIONISTS are now targeting minimal articles about obscure old authors. Yeah, lets only have articles about superheroes, comics, and games! Creating one of the tiny literary articles is often very time-consuming even if the fruits of one's labors are so small. But since Jimbo Jimmy Wales and the clique of cronies seem to want an encyclopedia of comics, so be it. I won't waste my time.Tkotc (talk) 20:52, 28 August 2013 (UTC)

Feedback is very welcomed! The subject did indeed get National Media attention. He is the only Gibraltarian to date to win a British National title and most local papers covered this achievement. I even have an issue of the Gibraltar Chronicle (gibs oldest and most prestigious paper) December 31st 2003 were the subject appears on the front page together with a write up.

I am just finding it hard to gather relevent information online. As his most notable achievement, BUSA (National title) was won by the subject over 8 years ago! A long time in the internet world. LOL

I will take heed of your advice though and keep searching for old articles etc to support everything I have written.

I sporadically patrol the list of PG authors lacking articles. This evening I found several of your new articles, mostly in the "new unreviewed" state. I reviewed them: very impressive, thanks. If you care, you my wish to check out my edit history to look at the changes I made, all of which were trivial.

How are you selecting topics? Are you using PG authors explicitly, or is this happenstance?

One minor suggestion: when you add an article, please try hard to go to existing articles and add links to your new article. This is important because it prevents the deletionists from classifying your article as an orphan, but it's even more important because it dramatically improves Wikipedia. In general, I think your article will not be considered an orphan if you can link to it from two mainspace articles (other than dabs, lists, etc.) Note that I personally think that (with rare exceptions) the fact that the subject is a PG author is enough to establish notability, but I am not a deletionist.

You may choose to go to the PG author pages at Wikipedia:Project Gutenberg author list and delete the link to your new article after you have created it. If you choose not to do this, that's fine: I am perfectly happy to continue to do this, and it gives me an opportunity to review your articles. If you choose to do this, please link to your new article in your edit comment, so we can see if your article gets deleted.

I tend to add a Template:Worldcat id entry to PG author articles, as I did to all of this batch. You may choose to do this when you add an article for a published author. In my opinion, a Worldcat entry is de facto evidence of notability. Others may disagree. -Arch dude (talk) 01:57, 9 February 2011 (UTC)

(1) My personal project was to help on the Project Gutenberg missing articles project. I pick the subjects more or less randomly, except lately I have just been going down the "S" list, googling the names, and seeing if there seems to be enough out there to write an article. Later, those that fail this may be run through the indices of the various literary biography reference works at the library. It has been fun picking them this way. Lots of very interesting people. A great number of Gutenberg authors were really known for something else, and happened to write one book about it.

(2) I wasn't aware of the Worldcat thing. I will definitely try to incorporate it.

(3) If I know about a mention of my subject in another article, I try to do the Wikilink, but sometimes there isn't one. Kind of a chicken-and-egg thing. Maybe my article would lead to a link somewhere. If the deletionists strike ... at the very least it would be a sad thing. Again thanks for reading these little articles. I really appreciate your advice, especially as this is my first foray into Wikipedia. I'll do as you suggest and read up on the various parameters that could use improvement, and if I have any questions hope I can come back to you for more good advice.

I do have another issue which you might be able to help with. In my page, I initially included a reproduction of a concert advertising poster for the artist, Joan Field. This was removed by some kind of wiki bot for lack of copyright info. As it happens, I'm the owner of this image. Can you give me some guidance as to the best way to use this information so that I can include the photo back on the page?

Thanks so much for taking the time to review my article. I added in more citations to my main source, and I was able to dig up one more published book source. Info on these labels is a bit scarce, grouping them together allowed me to create a more substantial article, and didn't feel like such a stretch since they were so connected. I've yet to come across any biographical information on Joe Ruffino outside of his record label exploits, so an article about didn't seem possible. I will look for more published material on the label. I guess I always assumed that the fact so many known artists were associated with the label and their careers furthered by it made it notable. My name is Donald Taylor and I'm the Wikipedian-in-Residence with the University of Maryland Libraries, Historic Maryland Newspapers Project. The Historic Maryland Newspapers Project is a part of the National Digital Newspaper Program, a joint program of the Library of Congress and the National Endowment for the Humanities. We are digitizing historic state newspapers for inclusion in the Library of Congress's Chronicling America online digital collection of America’s historical newspapers.

We are conducting a survey of Wikipedia contributors who have cited Chronicling America as a reference in their edits to Wikipedia. It is the objective of our study to identify ways that Chronicling America might be made a better resource for people editing Wikipedia. Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.
