gradient domain image processing

Hey Joe, thanks for accepting the page I started Gradient Domain Image Processing. I added some picture examples like you requested, they are pretty neat. I was wondering if you had time to give any pointers on how else to make the page better? It's the first page I've started from scratch, so I'm eager to learn. Before I start, in general it looks good, and the article is far past the place where a lot of articles enter the encyclopedia. Thank you! I do have a few suggestions if you would like to take it up a notch, and/or, some information that might be useful in the development of future articles.
First, I might add another sentence or two to the lead paragraph. I'm going to make a distinction here which may be helpful, the lead paragraph or paragraphs are intended to summarize the article rather than just introduce it. MOS:LEAD has way too much information on how we think about leads, but for this particular article, simply providing a sentence saying something about the fact that the technique has application in a number of image processing tasks, such as (then list three important ones.) I don't know that the clarifying example really needs to be summarized in the lead, but that one addition (and you'll probably find a better wording than I indicated here), ... might be a small improvement.
There is nothing wrong in policy with the way you've handled references, but particularly for any articles you might consider going forward, I do have a recommendation. We have a bunch of citation formatting macros. They are kind of a pain to use by hand, but there are two different ways you can make use of automation that can make their use easier. The technique I use is the WP:REFTOOLBAR, and if you read that page, I configure it to use the 1.x Toolbar settings. That I use an old version may seem paradoxical, but one of the features it has is fill in by DOI. In other words, by using that toolbar, you can hit the "cite" button, tell it your doing a journal, enter a DOI, press a button, and have a full cite generated from that information. The 1.x toolbar can also autofill from Google Book URLs (in cite book) and New York Times URLs (in cite news). Handy! And even for those where autofill isn't present, having a form to fill in the various fields is handy. And you tend to get wikilinks to journal names, and URLs to the papers (even if they're paywalled) that way too, which is always nice.
If you would like more feedback (and to be clear, I spend a lot more time doing "article triage' than any sort of delicate literary neurosurgery), I have a couple suggestions too. Subject matter experts, such as Wikipedia:WikiProject Computer science are available on many topics and often have experience on the specific issues that crop up particular types of articles, and how to approach them. For feedback on writing in general and Wikipedia style issues, Wikipedia:Peer review is an interesting but understaffed process as well. And Wikipedia:Good article criteria, which relates to a process we use to identify the strongest articles on wikipedia, may provide a useful checklist of things to think about in writing articles. I wouldn't suggest immediately trying to nominate this for "Good Article" status, but the checklist, I have found, is a very useful list of things to consider. --j⚛e deckertalk 17:59, 17 August 2014 (UTC)

Intentioning(band) update

Hi Joe, thanks for your expeditious review of Inventioning(band)! I was conducting the research & preparing to update the draft when I received rejection. That was fast!

Michael Lewis is the founder of "Inventioning" and a musical collaborator with Jon Anderson, ex-Yes vocalist, so I believe this would be notable. Jon is now forming the new Anderson-Ponty band (Jon Anderson & Jean-Luc Ponty). Michael is leading the preceding musical project titled "Inventioning" and publishing music featuring Jon Anderson's vocals, this is happening very quickly, please see this review, posted today:

Do you recall earlier this year back – in March to be precise -when there was an announcement online about Jon Anderson getting together with session guitarist/producer Michael Lewis and jazz fusion violinist Jean-Luc Ponty to form a band under the banner of Inventioning? What a wonderful name, I thought. It speaks of newness, development, forward motion and creativity, all of which are the true essence of prog if you think about it. Michael and Jon had started collaborating in January 2007, writing and producing songs, the vision being to one day perform them live together.

Joe,

First thank you for publishing my article on HOP Ranch this past weekend. Since then, I have added an infobox; de-orphaned the article; significantly improved the grammar throughout; cleaned up the reflist and the order in which references are listed in the body of the article; added geodata to the page; and added an additional link to the See Also section. I have carefully reviewed the grading scheme of Articles for Creation and I believe I have moved this up to at least Class B, perhaps even Class GA. I'd be grateful if you can take a look and if you agree, kindly upgrade the article accordingly.

First, thank you for the article! It is excellent.
With very very few exceptions, I rarely personally assign 'B' status or more as an AfC reviewer, and never, ever, GA. Any ratings I apply should be thought of as a "minimum", not a full evaluation, and more or less, the Wikipedia community understands that as the proper role of "Articles for Creation".
At Articles for Creation, my work is essentially that of a triage medic. Over 95% of the images I touch are rejected. Yours is clearly better.
For the most part, A/B/C ratings are generally promoted by WikiProjects familiar with the subject matter. As a generalist, I'm often ill-placed to know what is and isn't known about a subject, and topic-specific experts are in the best place to know if an article covers all the significant aspects of a topic. One of the reasons I try and find and assign WikiProjects to given articles is to attract the attention (over time, often long periods of time) of interested editors who are familiar with the type of subject. You might look to feedback from from appropriate individual WikiProjects by asking for comments on their talk pages.
GA is another matter. I'm not much of a writer myself, in 9+ years here, I've had one article identified as GA. You can pursue that too, and in fact I encourage you to do so, but I can't simply declare your article GA. There is a process here which is the only way that articles are denoted GA.
Information about the "good article" process can be found at Wikipedia:Good articles, including instructions for how to nominate your article. The one time I took on the process myself, I had my article reviewed at Wikipedia:Peer review prior to trying for GA. While peer review is not required, I would recommend going through it first, for me, it produced a good number of improvements that I was able apply before nominating myself into the Good Article process. Also consider leaving a note on the talk pages of any relevant wikiprojects and asking for suggested improvements. Once you've incorporated feedback from PR and the wikiprojects, then put yourself in at the Good Article nominations page.

Theodore Jarezki article declined

This is the history I have on my grandfather. It is reflected in the book mentioned that was written by Myra and also memoir extracts as written by his son Frank Ludwig Jarrett (who died in 2009) - From these I quoted some facts, as well as the Genealogy book I wrote on their history. I am not a young person and I have so much to learn on the computer. It is extremely puzzling for me to follow your 'easy steps'. It is not easy for me. It was done by trail and error when I originally sent it, hoping that all will be well. Please can you enlighten me in plain language how to go about fixing whatever problems there are in the article to enable me to put this onto Wikipedia. Since I've just had two heart operations within 4 months, I am not always in front of the computer, that's why I did not see your message before. Please be patient. Thank you so much. First and most importantly, please accept my best wishes on the medical front, that sounds terrible. There is absolutely no rush on our part here, anything, well, nearly anything that can be done here can be undone.
Before I get started, though, I've had trouble finding any record of that article, can you point me at the declined draft, or the message you got regarding the decline? That would be a great place to start.
But in general terms, I have to say that I agree with you. I think the essay I wrote actually gets at what we need, but it's still pages of dense material. I wish it were not so, but rest assured that I know our inclusion policies and guidelines are difficult for new editors to learn. Once I have a better idea of which article we're talking about, perhaps I will be able to make some more constructive suggestions. Thanks for your patience. not a stub anymore?

Hey Joe, thanks for the previous advice you gave me on the page I started. I was wondering if you could help me again with a different page? Myself and others have added a lot of content to Bowyer–Watson algorithm, so could you look at the page and tell me if it's appropriate for me to remove the stub status at the bottom? Yeah, usually around 500 bytes of text is the cutover point, I've removed the stub tag. You could have too, those are there largely to attract the attention of editors interested in particular topics to entirely fresh ground, e.g., if I make a one or two line stub on an article about a mountain, and mark it as a stub, the folks who enjoy mountain articles may notice it and go "hey, I could write an article on it." Advice to advertisers

I have deleted Draft:Richard Kalich as copyvio, but copied the advice you wrote on it to the article author's talk page at User talk:SP371. I like your wording and might well pinch some of it - I seem to spend my life telling people that WP is not a place for them to tell the world about themselves, their companies, or whatever, For the ones that post copies of their website, I have written User:JohnCD/Not a noticeboard, which I would like to promote to a WP essay some day, but am not quite satisfied with. Comments welcome. The advice from Uncle G is useful to quote: it would be a severe shock to most of our self-promoting newbies, but if they were made to follow it, we would get a few good articles and lose a lot of bad ones. Fabrizio Moreira page

Hey how are you you have tag the page for deletion but the page have reference to large and biggest news papers as references.

I don't see that that page is marked for deletion, and I have never done so myself so I'm confused by this request.
As near as I can tell, in 2012, I made a note at the article that it required copyediting. I added that because the English in the article is not grammatical, the capitalization is wrong in many places, and so forth. I'm not sure why that tag was removed, but that was the only complaint I've lodged.
There is a notability tag on the article, and you'd have to ask whoever added it if they feel that the article is still of questionable notability in their opinion. I've only taken a small look at the references, but they might have a point. The El Universo references are certainly from very serious, reliable sources. However, they do not provide "in-depth" coverage of Moreira, so they do not count toward meeting our general notability guideline. But I have not attempted to research the question of whether there is, elsewhere, coverage of Moreira. That would require the source to spend sentences, or better yet paragraphs, talking about Moreira rather than simply quoting him.

I understand the notability issue and reason for deletion. My question is regarding the wiki page in another language. This page exists in the German de.wikipedia.org, and I would like to know if this is sufficient in establishing notability. Basically, I would like for this page to show up when searching in en.wikipedia.org.

Different language Wikipedias have different inclusion rules, being accepted into one does not generally make it more likely it will be acceptable in another.
It does seem, however, that it is a signficant company. Are there newspaper, magazine, or book sources which provide in-depth,, independent coverage? That would be all that would be required to have an article here, perhaps two sources of that sort. --j⚛e deckertalk 01:43, 28 August 2014 (UTC)

Hi Isabel,
Articles on Wikipedia must meet our inclusion criteria, if you go to the draft in question, you will see an explanation of what we require within the grey box there. However, I recognize that, as a new editor, making sense of our policies can be very frustrating. You may wish to ask questions about our policies at the WP:Teahouse, which is a Q&A forum dedicated to the needs of new editors, they are a great bunch of people.
I would imagine that Newhouse could meet our inclusion criteria given his position, but the criteria still must be met--we call them "notability" guidelines, but really, they are inclusion criteria, and ones which are based on the existence of reliable, arm's length sources which talk about him in detail. Not interviews, not press releases, but independent coverage. You may also take a look at User:Joe Decker/IsThisNotable. I'm still working on refining it, but my hope is to provide a more step-by-step (if still not simple) approach to explaining what we need in terms of meeting that inclusion criterion.. I hope that it will be helpful.
As far as time frames, we are all volunteers here, and you will often find that it takes days or even weeks for a new draft to be reviewed. This is a problem, but not an uncommon one for volunteer organizations.

I don't immediately see the sort of sources that I could use as references to show that the topic meets our basic inclusion hurdle, which is what we call the general notability guideline. However, you'd need to provide sufficient information for other people to know where to find the information e.g. publication, date, article title, author (see WP:CITEHOW for more detail). When I said "the sources that you believe to be reliable, independent, and providing signficant coverage", what I meant by "independent" is sources that are at entirely arm's length from the subject. Press releases and pages from the organization itself are not independent. Generally we are looking for newspapers, magazines, and/or books that have gone through a formal editorial process. I'm sorry that our policies can be be a bit difficult to navigate at first.
You may also take a look at User:Joe Decker/IsThisNotable. I'm still working on refining it, but my hope is to provide a more step-by-step (if still not simple) approach to explaining what we need in terms of sources for demonstrating notability. No worries, just submit when the sourcing is shored up and another reviewer will be along. You may find that some reviewers have concerns about the use of some types of obituaries as sources--obviously full-article obituaries written by newspaper people from their own sources are generally considered fine, but so many are simply self-publishing by the family or an associated organization, and those wouldn't be okay. Surely the reference to Guinness World Records establishes the subject's notability? Could you be more specific as to what more is needed to establish that this game is well known? Its quite discouraging to get knocked back on your first article submission after spending quite some time on it.

Re "Press releases and such are the primary sources here" - there is only one press release referenced which is used to show evidence of the launch of a sequel game. The entire section on the sequel could probably be removed if necessary, but I did not think the sequel would warrant another article of its own.

What we would need in order to have for this article is described in a very short form at WP:42, and in a longer form at User:Joe Decker/IsThisNotable... generally, for a film, that would often end up being newspaper or magazine reviews of the work, but I suggest you read both those links to better understand what the requirement is that wasn't met, or to see what sorts of sources you can provide that might allow us to reconsider. Chase Iron Eyes is a noted member of the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation, an advocate for change, and a board member for the Lakota People's Law Project. The biography was deleted after the discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Chase Iron Eyes, which is probably hard to make sense of with our abbreviations and maze-like policies. More or less, the editors participating there wanted to see multiple reliable sources independent of Chase Iron Eyes which discuss him in detail. I've tried to write an essay about what all the "ifs ands and buts" of our policies around that look like, you can see that at User:Joe Decker/IsThisNotable. The four editors participating seemed to feel that such sources didn't exist, but it's possible they relied on what was in the article and neglected to see what they could find themselves by looking. Chase Iron Eyes page deletion

Hi Joe Decker,

Chase Iron Eyes' page was deleted on the 22nd of September and I believe that he holds enough credible and notable credentials to have a page on Wikipedia. Chase is an up and coming leader of the Lakota people and he has invested his heart into helping his people. He is a member of the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation and graduated from the University of North Dakota with his B.A. in Political Science and Indian Studies. He then went on to attend and graduate from the University of Denver Strum College of Law. Chase is a spokesperson for the Black Hills Treaty Council, he spearheaded the fundraising effort to buy back the sacred site of Pe' Sla in the Black Hills. He is a board member and South Dakota counsel for the Lakota People's Law Project, he started Last Real Indians. He was the 2012 recipient of the Native Nation Rebuilder for the Bush Foundation Fellowship, and the list goes on and on and on. If you don't feel that there was sufficient reference to Chase's accomplishments and achievements, please give me the opportunity to list all of the references that I have since compiled.

It will be deleted, you wont' have to do it. And it is okay for you to try and create an article on the subject, but it is best to write such an article in your own words, summarizing but not copying what other sources (newspapers, magazines and books, generally) say about the subject. More or less, low-participation AfDs that are closed delete are treated more like PRODs than traditional delete closes.

AfC is in many ways a triage process, but your article was checked for copyright issues, neutrality, the existence and use of sources and so forth, well above what usually comes in through that path. Going forward, you should be able to create articles directly without passing through the AfC process, if you are looking for more detailed editorial feedback I would consider looking into our "good article" nomination process, it's a great way to get deep and detailed feedback from another editor about your article, and it has far higher standards than AfC's "should we delete this?" bar.

What type of warning should you do if someone reverts a AFD that was decided to be a redirect?

Okay so I caught this a little late-but Lav Bratuša was decided to be a redirect on September 17, a few days later the page creator restored the pre AFD version (with no sources and everything). Your article was deleted, I see (and I'm sorry I don't recall it, I go through hundreds if not thousands of articles in a given month) because there were no references to reliable sources (generally newspapers, magazines, books) sources in the article all. A more precise indication of what we need in terms of such sources might be found at User:Joe Decker/IsThisNotable. Hello Joe, I would like some pointers how to edit the article about Dino-Lite, as i have written this quite neutral, not as an advertisement. Dino-Lite is already quite well known as the brand of developer and manufacturer of digital microscopes. Everything i have written is factual but there is no scientific article about this; there are many references and mentions about Dino-Lite by end-users though. If i compare what i wrote to the Dutch page on Nikon, for instance, https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikon_Corporation, that is what i would call advertising text. Also if i look at the references for the article about Keyence (a high end competitor of Dino-Lite), most of their references are from their own website. I look forward to your comments and help. Note that the issue isn't precisely "enough" references, it is "enough" references which are are in-depth discussions of the band from sources which have an editorial process -- profiles in magazines, books, newspapers, that sort of thing. Dino-Lite is already quite well known as the brand of developer and manufacturer of digital microscopes. Everything i have written is factual but there is no scientific article about this; there are many references and mentions about Dino-Lite by end-users though. If i compare what i wrote to the Dutch page on Nikon, for instance, https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikon_Corporation, that is what i would call advertising text. Also if i look at the references for the article about Keyence (a high end competitor of Dino-Lite), most of their references are from their own website. I look forward to your comments and help. I think the sentence from your draft that most clearly demonstrates my concerns is this one, " Dino-Lite has become the de-facto standard for handheld digital microscopes in many fields of use." Now, let me be clear, that statement may be true in some sense. But "de-facto standard" is a positive and somewhat subjective statement, and it is the sort of statement, as such, that should never be put into Wikipedia's voice. If a reliable, unconnected source such as an independent book or magazine mentions it, that can be attributed as an opinion of that publication, but it's not okay for that to be presented as an opinion of Wikipedia's.
Please note that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a forum for advertising your product, service or other business. If you are writing about your own enterprise, it can be quite difficult to write a proper encyclopedia article--and in fact, our policies go out of their way to suggest that you do not try. Please read and understand WP:PSCOI. However, if you do wish to continue writing such an article, here's some advice.
One of the basic bars an article like this is going to have to meet is notability, which is defined under Wikipedia as being shown by coverage in arm's-length, reliable sources. These are usually things such as newspaper articles and magazine articles, and excludes the sort of "reprinted press releases" common to some local business rags--those sources must be independent and reliable.
My best advice is to start over, and then work at finding those sources. Find out what they talk about, and how. And then write your article based almost entirely on those sources. You can use primary sources to fill in entirely neutral and uncontroversial facts (where's the HQ?), but the use of primary sources should be a minimum.

Hello! My apologies for the delay in responding. The article was deleted as a result of the discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Evina Schmidova. I see four opinions, all of which indicate that the article does not appear to meet our general inclusion criteria for biographies, which you can read at WP:BASIC. I do not see where "many people confirm" the subject is "an important photographer." I don't see any personal attacks, although I can imagine, particularly if you are the subject, that you may hear "not notable" as an attack. The problem isn't a question of whether it is cited, the problem is one of the legalities of copyright. You will notice that whenever you enter text into Wikipedia, there is a note which reads "By clicking the "Save page" button, you agree to the Terms of Use and you irrevocably agree to release your contribution under the CC BY-SA 3.0 License and the GFDL with the understanding that a hyperlink or URL is sufficient for CC BY-SA 3.0 attribution." Essentially, you must not contribute text which is copyrighted under US law (or text very near it) unless you are the owner of said copyright. There is a process for content owners to identify themselves as such, but it's generally not recommended for text, as often the "written by the subject" nature of that sort of material leaves it unsuitably non-neutral for an encyclopedia. --j⚛e deckertalk 16:50, 20 October 2014 (UTC)

Not resubmitting, not requesting a re-review. Sorry, but the process for submitting articles seems to have gotten a whole lot more cumbersome, time-consuming, and bureaucratic. By which I mean that retries, resubmissions, and justifications are now required.

Not into it - don't have the time. This particular work is in fact noteworthy and I don't really feel like rummaging around though various reviews and references to prove that. How much "proof" is enough? No amount of information will satisfy a determined skeptic, and there is no indication in advance that a resubmit will "pass muster." How many references/attestations saying "this is a significant work?" From what sources? Is the New York Times authoritative? How about "The Fifth Estate?" - a defunct underground newspaper? What if Noam Chomsky thought the work significant but nobody else did? Who is to say, or to judge?

Not sure what the increased rigor is supposed to achieve. Are vanity authors spamming Wikipedia by putting links out there to their own low-quality works?

I used to toss the occasional article or change out there from time to time.

It was good while/when it lasted...

Re-creating article Ghazwa-e-Hind

The concept of Ghazwa-e-Hind is now being discussed in pretty reliable sources like Daily Mail, Daily Excelsior and First Post. I found that Ghazwa-e-Hind and Ghazwatul Hind were previously deleted due to lack of reliable sources. I think the article can now be created. Please let me your view on this.
