Ubinas Notes

A few notes on Ubinas, which is largely in great shape:

  • "Historical eruptions have been recorded at seven of these volcanic systems: El Misti, Huaynaputina, Sabancaya, Ticsani, Tutupaca, Ubinas and Yucamane; the Ampato, Casiri, Chachani, Coropuna and Sara Sara volcanoes are dormant.[2] The formation of their magmas is caused by the dehydration of the down-going slab and the melting of the mantle; the magmas often undergo fractional crystallization and absorb crustal material.[37] The 1600 eruption of Huaynaputina had an enormous impact, including a cold summer in the northern hemisphere.[38]" - the last sentence comes abruptly, making it seem out of place
  • "Ubinas together with Ticsani and Huaynaputina[34] forms a group of volcanoes that extend in north-south direction[1] behind the main volcanic arc and share a common geochemical and tectonic signature,[34] the latter of which is reflected by the existence of a graben occupied by the Rio Tambo and whose marginal faults are the sites of the volcanic vents.[39] " -"whose" seems incorrect here
  • "The volcano developed in two phases, Ubinas I and Ubinas II:[1] Ubinas I is represented by lava flows at the foot of the volcano and debris and ignimbrite deposits in the south and southeast of Ubinas, and it forms a 600 metres (2,000 ft) high shield.[19] " - think you mean shield volcano; should probably clarify this for a lay reader
  • "In April 2015 for example activity at Ubinas led to the declaration of emergency for the districts surrounding the volcano,[78] then in September of the same year an eruption generated a 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) high eruption column and led to ash fall in the region, leading to evacuations.[79]" - maybe rename the section to 2013 - 2017?
  • In general, there's overlinking, including repeated links. I worked on a few of them but there may be a bunch remaining.

Also, I would love to collaborate on Huaynaputina at some point; I've been meaning to write that article for a while now. ceranthor 16:43, 11 July 2018 (UTC)

Thanks! In order:
  • For some reason the source was coy about describing just how important Huaynaputina was; I've expanded a little to emphasize that Huaynaputina's importance stems from the severity of its eruption.
  • Remedied.
  • No, the source does not call it a shield volcano, just a "shield".
  • To be honest, I don't think that paragraph needs its own section.
  • Removed duplicate links.
Re Huaynaputina: I think the problem is that "huaynaputina" kicks up 1290 Google Scholar results, all of which would have to be consulted in some fashion. That is a lot. Also, I am generally more comfortable writing about volcanoes rather than eruptions and a Huaynaputina page would be very focused on the 1600 eruption. Perhaps you could write the bulk of the eruption material and I the volcano stuff? Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 17:01, 11 July 2018 (UTC)
That definitely could make it more doable... I'll get back to you on that. ceranthor 01:55, 12 July 2018 (UTC)
Ceranthor Otherwise, do you think that Ubinas is ready? Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 12:28, 12 July 2018 (UTC)
I think so. You think it's fully comprehensive? The prose seems pretty close to me; nothing egregious that won't be tightened up at FAC. ceranthor 14:03, 12 July 2018 (UTC)
Yeah, did a last pass yesterday. Nominated it. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 16:46, 12 July 2018 (UTC)

You sure about closing this as no consensus? There's no explicit sourcing information, some reason to doubt it's the uploader's own work, and if it is the uploader didn't submit required documentation. And it's an orphaned file, so if it's free it should just be moved to Commons where I guarantee it'll be deleted if nominated. —innotata 16:01, 12 July 2018 (UTC)

Yes. The other participant in the discussion pointed out that the username matches that of Mr. Kawasaki's chief of staff and has made edits that cover technical information on Mr. Kawasaki's. Seems quite plausible that their chief of staff would upload such an official image to Wikipedia using an accountname matching their own real name. And that they would hold licensing rights as a commissioned work since an official portrait would be made presumably on behalf of the staff. I don't think that any remnant doubts would justify deletion, doubly so since commons:COM:PCP is a Commons policy not an enWiki policy and the discussion had no overall consensus pointing in that direction. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 16:25, 12 July 2018 (UTC)
I don't see how it makes sense for enwiki to host orphaned images that can be on Commons, except for Commons (perhaps) being more cautious about documentation. Even if the precautionary principle isn't policy, not hosting copyrighted images is, so requiring documentation in questionable cases still makes sense. It's certainly plausible that the photo is by said employee but it isn't clear. —innotata 17:10, 12 July 2018 (UTC)
We don't have any policies nor reason against "orphaned images that can be on Commons". The uncertainty of the copyright situation is not clear enough to override either a) the consensus requirement (the FFD discussion did not have consensus) or b) the "PCP is a Commons not enWiki policy" points. Hi Jo-Jo. You closed the FFD on this file as "Keep only in the Lucian Freud article", but probably just forgot to remove it from 20th-century Western painting#Realism, Landscape, Figuration, Still-Life, Cityscape. The article is protected and can only be edited by admins, so I was wondering if you'd mind going back and removing the file; otherwise, it will just eventually get flagged as a NFCC#10c violation. Thanks in advance. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:21, 13 July 2018 (UTC)

Question about image use

Hello again! Apologies for this random message, but I have a quick question about uploading an image to Wikimedia Commons. I have been working on the Leah LaBelle article to get it ready for the FAC process sometime in the future. I recently contacted the senior editor of YouKnowIGotSoul.com for permission to use and crop an image from the following article (1), and he sent me an email back that granted me permission to use an image for the Wikipedia article. I was wondering how I would go about uploading the image to Wikimedia Commons while showing that I have permission to use it. Thank you for your help, and have a great rest of your day! Aoba47 (talk) 21:07, 2 August 2018 (UTC)

Well, asking for a permission broader than "permission to use an image for the Wikipedia article" would be the necessary first step. Once you've got that, forwarding the email to the Commons OTRS would probably the right approach. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 21:13, 2 August 2018 (UTC)
  • Thank you for the response. Apologies for the stupid question, but how would you recommend that phrase a question on a permission broader than "permission to use an image for the Wikipedia article"? Aoba47 (talk) 21:18, 2 August 2018 (UTC)
  • Understood. I will email the person later today about it. I am honestly just really bad with all of the image policy stuff and I have avoided it in the past as I find it really confusing. Thank you for the help so far! Aoba47 (talk) 21:31, 2 August 2018 (UTC)

I have received two responses from people. One of them had a question about the permissions. They understand "the right to modify it", but they were uncertain what was meant by "the right to sell the image for money". Could you explain that part to me just so that I can convey the right information to the person? I do not want to say something incorrect. The second person agreed to have an image on Wikipedia, and I have an email exchange with them. How would I go about forwarding the email to the Commons OTRS? I have a third and last question (apologies for all of the trouble). The YouKnowIGotSoul.com senior editor granted me permission to use an image from the article linked above, and I was wondering if you could provide advice on which image of Leah LaBelle would be the best for the article? Hope you are having a wonderful start to your weekend! Aoba47 (talk) 05:07, 3 August 2018 (UTC)

File:Cityscape I 360.jpg (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) Actually, the consensus was to keep. Could you please restore it?Knulclunk (talk) 00:24, 6 August 2018 (UTC)

To go on, why should WE have to go through the process of undeleting a file that was so carelessly deleted? I went to the undelete page. It’s a huge bureaucratic pain in the ass. The file was legit and the reasoning valid. You closed the discussion early and without consensus. Please fix it. Knulclunk (talk) 00:48, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
Reformatted this request so that it doesn't get attached to another one. No, the consensus was not to keep. It's not simply a matter of counting heads, see WP:DELAFD. Nobody who voted keep bothered to address the WP:NFCC policy which has to be addressed for non-free file discussions. It wasn't an early closure, either; the file had been under discussions for weeks. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 06:24, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
The discussion had been closed KEEP for weeks. Deleting the file completely breaks WP:NFCCE "A file with a valid non-free-use rationale for some (but not all) articles it is used in will not be deleted. Instead, the file should be removed from the articles for which it lacks a non-free-use rationale, or a suitable rationale added." The rationale passed NFCC, at least for the articles Richard Diebenkorn and Bay Area Figurative Movement and, for those uses, a pretty resounding KEEP. Now, the file is gone, along with all its rationale and links to those pages. What a mess :( --Knulclunk (talk) 16:04, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
Well, the file can still be undeleted if the NFCCs are actually valid ... except that Hullaballoo Wolfowitz and Marchjuly made arguments implying that the rationales aren't actually valid - either because the context discussed has a bogus source or because there is a much better image available - which weren't countered except by vaguewave "keeps". "Bogus tags"

An article eligible for GA that just says "volcano" and not what kind of volcano, so specify is not eligible for GA. Do some work instead of calling it "bogus". Tisquesusa (talk) 10:55, 9 August 2018 (UTC)

I don't agree. I know the Good article criteria and also the Featured article criteria and none of them demands that we specify which type of volcano, or for that matter implies that it would be needed. Plenty of articles do not specify such details in their first sentence, ditto for GAs and FAs. Maintenance tags are for actual problems, besides, and nothing in the documentation implies that this tag would be appropriate here - "volcano" is not some vague label. Question;

I'd like to get further explainations concerning the conclusion of this discussion [16] as you were the user who closed it. There are many similar cases like White Light/White Heat and the 1988 reissue cover, why do you let this cover whereas you reverted the Hong KOng Garden reissue sleeve ? Carliertwo (talk) 23:24, 9 August 2018 (UTC).

Carliertwo Um, which Hong KOng reissue sleeve? White Light/White Heat has three non-free images and whenever such cases come to FFD one or two images are usually deleted for violating NFCC#3; it seems like these images weren't discussed yet, though. An arbitration case regarding German war effort articles has now closed and the final decision is viewable at the link above. The following remedies have been enacted:

  1. For engaging in harassment of other users, LargelyRecyclable is indefinitely banned from the English Wikipedia under any account.
  2. Cinderella157 is topic banned from the history of Germany from 1932 to 1945, broadly construed. This topic ban may be appealed after six months have elapsed and every six months thereafter.
  3. Auntieruth55 is reminded that project coordinators have no special roles in a content dispute, and that featured articles are not immune to sourcing problems.
  4. Editors are reminded that consensus-building is key to the purpose and development of Wikipedia. The most reliable sources should be used instead of questionable sourcing whenever possible, especially when dealing with sensitive topics. Long-term disagreement over local consensus in a topic area should be resolved through soliciting comments from the wider community, instead of being re-litigated persistently at the local level.
  5. While certain specific user-conduct issues have been identified in this decision, for the most part the underlying issue is a content dispute as to how, for example, the military records of World War II-era German military officers can be presented to the same extent as military records of officers from other periods, while placing their records and actions in the appropriate overall historical context. For better or worse, the Arbitration Committee is neither authorized nor qualified to resolve this content dispute, beyond enforcing general precepts such as those requiring reliable sourcing, due weighting, and avoidance of personal attacks. Nor does Wikipedia have any other editorial body authorized to dictate precisely how the articles should read outside the ordinary editing process. Knowledgeable editors who have not previously been involved in these disputes are urged to participate in helping to resolve them. Further instances of uncollegial behavior in this topic-area will not be tolerated and, if this occurs, may result in this Committee's accepting a request for clarification and amendment to consider imposition of further remedies, including topic-bans or discretionary sanctions.

For the Arbitration Committee,
