Recent changes
- The parameter for unpatrolled edits in recent changes filters changed name. You might need to update saved filters and links. [1]
Problems
- We are migrating wikis from Tidy to Remex. Because of a bug the 250 wikis which do not yet use Remex were switched on 23 April. This is two months early. This meant that pages with broken wikitext showed wrongly to readers. The bug was undone the next day. You can help fix broken wikitext to avoid this problem when your wiki switches. Tidy will be removed on all wikis before July 2018. You can follow the process on Phabricator. [2]
Changes later this week
- You will be able use CodeMirror in the 2017 wikitext editor on all wikis. CodeMirror helps with syntax highlighting. It has previously been a beta feature and only available on wikis with scripts that are written from left to right. [3]
- When an administrator blocks someone they will have a calendar they can use to choose when the block ends. This is to make it easier to pick a specific date. [4]
- You can soon turn on the Performance Inspector in the Editing section in your preferences. It shows information about the performance of pages. This could be the size of modules in the page, how many CSS selectors are defined on the page and how many are used, or the size of the images on the page. This tool is intended to help editors fix pages that load slowly. [5]
- There is a new abuse filter function called
equals_to_any
. You can use it to check if its first argument is equal (===
) to any of the following ones. For example you can use it to check if the page's namespace is amongst a given set of values in a more compact way than you could earlier. You can read more on mediawiki.org. - The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 1 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 2 May. It will be on all wikis from 3 May (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the Editing team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 1 May at 18:30 (UTC). See how to join.
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 2 May at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- The Wikimedia Cloud Services team is working on a new project called Toolhub. The goal is to make it easier for Wikimedians to discover software tools they can use. You can leave feedback on the talk page or email jharewikimedia.org to leave private feedback.
- All wikis with fewer than 100 high-priority linter errors in all namespaces will switch to use the Remex parsing library. This is to replace Tidy. It will happen on 2 May. Other wikis will be recommended to switch soon when they have fixed the errors that must be fixed. Wikibooks wikis with fewer than 100 high-priority linter errors in the main namespace will switch on 9 May. Tidy will be removed on all wikis before July 2018. [6][7][8]

Darin Johnson
Darin Johnson was deleted at an AfD with little turnout. The consensus was that he was not notable because he had not played professionally. However, that has changed and he is now a professional basketball player. I request this article to be undeleted because it meets GNG now. ~EDDY (talk/contribs)~ 13:51, 30 April 2018 (UTC)

DYK for Paniri
On 2 May 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Paniri, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that as of 2009, the highest location where crustaceans had been discovered was in the crater lake of Paniri? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Paniri. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Paniri), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Please, restore the article Rodrigo Silva
I have requested the restoration of the article Rodrigo Silva, because it was a very important article about a famous Brazilian archaeologist and was excluded without reasons. The article contained reliable sources, was very well described, there were no spelling errors and followed the standards and norms of Wikipedia. --DavidStarIsrael7 (talk) 18:47, 29 April 2018 (UTC)
- Well, yes, but these sources either were not independent or mentioned him in passing, as noted in the deletion discussion. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 19:19, 29 April 2018 (UTC)

- According to that same page, it does not seem like the sources are actually adequate. Please consider the possibility that the topic just can't have an article and that no amount of editing can overcome a lack of notability. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 06:16, 3 May 2018 (UTC)

Recent changes
- The Wikimedia Commons mobile app has a new version. It is now easier to find nearby places that need pictures. It helps you with direct uploads and title and category suggestions. The app only works on Android phones. [9]
Problems
- The abuse filters had a problem with blocks where you had changed how long they last. It used the default length everywhere. This was in late April. Abuse filter users should make sure the right block length is used and change them if needed. This is only for filters where how long blocks last had been changed. [10]
Changes later this week

GAN Backlog
Hi Jo JO Eumerus. I am looking to encourage suitable editors to review more articles at WP:GAN. Currently you have 16 nominations awaiting review and as you are probably aware there is a large backlog. This means you and other editors may have to wait months before your articles are reviewed. According to User:GA bot/Stats you have reviewed 9 articles and your user page shows 33 passed good articles. This suggests that you are familiar with the criteria and able to contribute more reviews. Without editors reviewing articles the process falls apart. If you need some help with reviewing feel free to ask me or leave a note at the help desk. Regards AIRcorn (talk) 11:45, 9 May 2018 (UTC)
Help us design granular blocks!
Hello :-) The Anti-Harassment Tools team at the Wikimedia Foundation will start building these granular blocking tools in a few weeks and we've asked WMF designer Alex Hollender to help us make some wireframes so the tools are intuitive to MediaWiki users.
We have a first draft of how we think this tool should work. You can read the full proposed implementation here but here are the significant parts:
- Granular blocks (page, category, namespace, and file uploading) will be built on top of Special:Block. These blocks will function as if they were regular blocks and allow for the same options, but only take effect on specific pages.
- We will add a new checkbox for "Block this user from the whole site" which will be checked by default. When it is unchecked the admin will be able to specify which pages, categories, and/or namespaces the user should be blocked from editing.
- Granular blocks can be combined and/or overlap. (For example, a user could be simultaneously blocked from editing the articles Rain, Thunder, Lightning, and all pages inside the Category:Weather.)
- Only one block is set at a time, to adjust what the user is blocked from the administrator would have to modify the existing block.
- Block logs should display information about the granular block
- When a blocked user attempts to edit an applicable page, they should see a block warning message which include information on their block (reason, expiration, what they are blocked from, etc.)
- If a category is provided, the blocked user cannot edit either the category page itself and all pages within the category.
- If the File: namespace is blocked, the user should not be allowed to upload files.
We like this direction because it builds on top of the existing block system, both a technical and usability wise. Before we get too far along with designs and development we'd like to hear from you about our prosposal:
- What do you think of the proposed implementation?
- We believe this should be an expansion of Special:Block, but it has been suggested that this be a new special page. What are your thoughts?
- Should uploading files be combined with a File namespace block, or as a separate option? (For example, if combined, when a user is blocked from the File namespace, they would neither be able to edit any existing pages in the File namespace nor upload new files.)
- Should there be a maximum number of things to be blocked from? Or should we leave it up to admin discretion?
We appreciate your feedback on this project's talk page or by email. For the Anti-Harassment Tools team, SPoore (WMF) (talk) , Trust and Safety Specialist, Community health initiative (talk) 20:54, 9 May 2018 (UTC)

File:NGS Honorable Mention Award to THFFI.jpg Deletion
You recommended deletion of this file. I responded with the reasons why it should not be deleted but you seem to have never seen my response. At least, you never reacted to my response.
Charles C. Morgan (me) is a member of the Board and the Treasurer The Hungerford Family Foundation, Inc. (THFFI). I am also the editor of The Hungerford World Tree, the Newsletter that was given the award by the National Genealogical Association (NGS).
The image that was deleted is a scan done by Charles C. Morgan (me) of the certificate given to THFFI by NGS as the winner of the NGS 2017 Family Association Newsletter Competition. As stated above, Charles C. Morgan is a Member of the Board and Treasurer of THFFI as well as the editor of the THFFI Newsletter that was given the award. Having been given to THFFI by NGS, both the certificate itself and the scanned image of that certificate are owned by THFFI and, consequently, THFFI is the copyright owner of both the certificate and the image. Charles C. Morgan, as an officer and Member of the Board of THFFI, has granted permission for use of this image on Wikipedia. Charles C. Morgan has the authority to grant that permission.
FYI, I am an attorney and have a good understanding of Intellectual Property law, including Copyright law and the facts regarding ownership rights underlying a claim to a copyright. THFFI has a rightful, unambiguous claim to the copyright of this image since the certificate was given to (transferred to, donated to, relinquished to, granted to, delivered to) THFFI without any reservation of rights by the NGS. Charles C. Morgan scanned the certificate. As an officer and member of the Board with authority to act on behalf of THFFI, Charles C. Morgan had the power to vest copyright ownership of the image in THFFI.
The NGS press release announcing the granting of the award to THFFI can be seen at this link: <href>https://www.ngsgenealogy.org/galleries/press/AWARDSOpeningSessPRFINAL210MAY2017.pdf</href>
Please undelete this image at your early convenience and authorize its use on my draft article about THFFI.
Charlie (talk) 15:36, 6 May 2018 (UTC)
- @Cochituate: Well, we need proof that NGS gave the copyright to THFFI, not just an assertion. You need to confirm the ownership of the file copyright to WP:OTRS, preferably through an official e-mail. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 15:47, 6 May 2018 (UTC)
Well, as a lawyer, I KNOW that what you are saying is absolutely incorrect. You clearly have no clue about ownership rights under facts like this. Requiring me to obtain an email from NGS amounts to harassment and is imposing inappropriate administrative burdens on me and NGS. I will go get that email and try to figure out how to get it to you, but please go do some research on copyright ownership and become educated on the subject. Charlie (talk) 16:07, 6 May 2018 (UTC)
I received the following from NGS this evening:
Charlie,
I received it and have been checking into this. There is not a copyright on the certificate. The certificate is not something that we would go to the trouble and expense to copyright. If we did that we would have to do that for each certificate and could not afford the cost. If you need something that says you have permission to publish a scanned copy of the certificate, we could probably do that. As far as taking a picture of the certificate, who ever took the picture would own the copyright to the picture. But there again it would run into money to register a copyright.

Chuck –
Everything worked out just fine. Your staff at the convention was (is) first-rate. Again, thanks for the award. And thank you for your support and assistance.
I’m drafting an article about THFFI for publication on Wikipedia. They are trying to tell me that THFFI is not the copyright owner of the award certificates given to us last year (honorable mention) and this year (first place). They are saying that you (NGS) must send me an email stating that THFFI is the copyright owner of the certificates that you’ve given us and that THFFI is the copyright owner of the scanned images of the certificate that I want to include in the article.
Could you, or someone else in authority at NGS, send me an email confirming that THFFI is the copyright owner of the certificates and the scanned images that we have made of those certificates?
Charlie
What more do I need to give you? How do I send you a print of the emails?Charlie (talk) 03:08, 10 May 2018 (UTC)

Andy Cook (footballer, born 1990)
You closed this discussion as delete, and I am requesting it now be reversed.
Cook has been the leading scorer in the National League this season - here - and scored in the playoff final that saw his side promoted to EFL League Two for the 2018/19 season - here. Independent sources include here, here. Article has been deleted previously on the basis that he has not played for an EFL team, but that has now been overtaken by events and, given his status as leading scorer in the NL, he should in any event be treated as a special case outside any guidelines.
Ghmyrtle (talk) 14:55, 13 May 2018 (UTC)
- I admit that I am not up on the mechanics of NFOOTY with respect to such a claim; @Supreme Sports Statistician, Number 57, GiantSnowman, and Fenix down:? Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 15:01, 13 May 2018 (UTC)
- He still fails WP:NFOOTBALL and there is no reason for any special treatment (the other top scorer in the league also doesn't have an article). However, if he plays for Tranmere next season in the EFL, he will then pass and the article can be restored (which I'm happy to do on request). Number 57 15:34, 13 May 2018 (UTC)
- That is a guideline. There can be special circumstances, and special circumstances exist in this case. You must surely recognise that it is bizarre and anomalous that no fewer than 23 other players in the Tranmere squad have articles, but not the player who is not only the team's leading scorer, but the entire league's leading scorer? Ghmyrtle (talk) 16:36, 13 May 2018 (UTC)
- All the other players pass WP:NFOOTBALL as they have played in the Football League at some point, but Cook has not. This is not a reason for Cook to have an article. Kim Casey was the league's top scorer for two seasons in the 80s but he never made the step up and doesn't have an article. Number 57 17:38, 13 May 2018 (UTC)
- My point is that you are interpreting the guidelines too rigidly. With guidelines there will always be exceptions. You must be able to take a wider view, and recognise that this is an exceptional case. Any reasonable neutral person looking at the squad listing in the Tranmere Rovers F.C article would see that there is a clear and obvious anomaly. One which can be readily overcome by reinstating (and then updating) the article. See WP:COMMONSENSE. Ghmyrtle (talk) 18:22, 13 May 2018 (UTC)
- Good close - fails WP:NFOOTBALL and WP:GNG. GiantSnowman 18:33, 13 May 2018 (UTC)
- That doesn't matter. Whatever the merits of the previous close in June 2017, the world has now moved on. We have had another season, in which Cook was top scorer, and was the subject of new reports in reliable sources. Ghmyrtle (talk) 19:05, 13 May 2018 (UTC)
- Based on this disagreement I'd punt the whole question to WP:DELREV. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 06:30, 14 May 2018 (UTC)
- That seems the best way forward. Ghmyrtle (talk) 08:08, 14 May 2018 (UTC)
- Maybe DRV is the best place for a formal discussion, but given that the in depth coverage noted in the sources above is from local news reporting I am not seeing GNG here. Fenix down (talk) 12:01, 14 May 2018 (UTC)

- @Flix11: I am not finding any broken files anywhere I looked. Also, the file renames were all part of a big batch and the script we use for that at Commons does move the image links itself. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 06:31, 15 May 2018 (UTC)
- @Jo-Jo Eumerus: The images of all those flags, especially in the template pages, do not appear in my incognito-mode browser even after I reloaded the pages over and over again. - Ok, I get it now. It seems like Commons didn't know about these template pages and that the incognito mode browser does not understand what a "redirect" is unlike the regular browser. I did make the edits manually. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 06:50, 15 May 2018 (UTC)

The same happened before with Illegitimate Barrister's edits and he immediately fixed those. Why won't you? – Flix11 (talk) 06:40, 15 May 2018 (UTC)

Husch-Blackwell
Hi Jo-Jo, I am an intern at Husch-Blackwell and we are trying to figure out how to get our page reinstated. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.130.220.18 (talk) 19:29, 16 May 2018 (UTC)
- Greetings. Husch-Blackwell never existed; Draft:Husch Blackwell was deleted for being unacceptably spammy, not to mention being copy-pasted from here. Pages on Wikipedia need to be neutral and they must not be copied. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 19:35, 16 May 2018 (UTC)
- If we could create a neutral history of the firm, would we be able to get our page and get that published? I'm new to publishing on Wikipedia so any help would be much appreciated. I know that we would need 3-4 neutral sources about us to back up the page, but what would the process look like? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.130.220.18 (talk) 19:43, 16 May 2018 (UTC)
- Yes, but only if the criteria laid out in WP:NCORP (yes, I know, Wikipedia policies are not known for their brevity...) are met by the firm. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 19:46, 16 May 2018 (UTC)
- Wonderful. If I can get something written to meet those guidelines how would I go about getting the page published again with the new neutral description? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.130.220.18 (talk) 19:48, 16 May 2018 (UTC)
- You ought to add
{{subst:submit}}
to the page. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 20:01, 16 May 2018 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Gia na xereis alaniari
Aman Doktor is deleted with this change: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Gia na xereis alaniari. However, this page is an album by Candan Ercetin and not created by the person listed. Can an admin revert this change? --Joseph (talk) 18:58, 21 May 2018 (UTC)
- Restored. It seems like the page may not fall under the scope of the prior deletion discussion in the sense that the arguments were very different. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 19:10, 21 May 2018 (UTC)

Recent changes
- You can now use global preferences on most wikis. This means you can set preferences for all wikis at the same time. Before this you had to change them on each individual wiki. Global preferences will come to the Wikipedias later this week. [18][19]
- It is now easier for blocked mobile users to see why they were blocked. [20]
- Wikidata now supports lexicographical data. This helps describe words.
- There is now a checkbox on Special:ListUsers to let you see only users in temporary user groups. [21]
- Some rare invisible Unicode characters have recently been banned from page titles. This includes soft hyphens (U+00AD) and left-to-right (U+2066) and right-to-left (U+2067) isolate markers. Existing pages with these characters will soon be moved by a script. [22]
- There's a new Wikimedia Foundation team to support the Wikimedia technical communities. It's called the Technical Engagement team. Most of the team members did similar work in other teams before this. [23]
Problems
- Some translatable pages are showing old translations instead of latest ones. The cause of this issue has been fixed. We will update all pages automatically to show the latest translations. [24]
Changes later this week
- There will be a new special page named PasswordPolicies. This page gives information about the password rules for each user group on that wiki. [25]
- A new way to see moved paragraphs in diffs is coming to most wikis. This is to make it easier to find the moved paragraphs and the changes in them. [26]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 29 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 30 May. It will be on all wikis from 31 May (calendar).
- Wikis can enable Citoid to provide automatic reference look-up in the visual editor and the 2017 wikitext editor. This is complex. The tool will now disable itself if the configuration isn't correct. It has warned about this in the JavaScript console since February. Check that your wiki is configured correctly. You can ask for help if you need it. [27]
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the Editing team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 29 May at 18:30 (UTC). See how to join.
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 30 May at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- Content Translation drafts which have not been updated in over a year will be removed. This allows other users to translate those articles. [28]
- A survey is collecting information on what users think about how Wikimedia wiki pages are loaded. This information could be used in future development. [29]
- Some wikis will switch to use the Remex parsing library. This is to replace Tidy. It will happen on 30 May and 13 June. Wikis with fewer than 100 linter issues in the main namespace in all high-priority linter categories will switch. This includes Wikidata. Tidy will probably be removed on all wikis in the first week of July. [30][31]

CSD full protection
I made this a small top-icon, because I thought the banner on a major policy page that new users frequently come into contact with would be confusing. You're of course free to revert me, but thought you might have forgotten to check the small box on twinkle. TonyBallioni (talk) 16:53, 2 June 2018 (UTC)

Recent changes
- The MonoBook skin has been optimised for mobile devices. It now looks different. [32]
- Planet Wikimedia collects blogs about Wikimedia. It will now use the Rawdog feed aggregator to do this instead of Planet. [33][34]
- Redirect links in Special:WhatLinksHere now link to the original page and not the target page. This was done earlier and changed the used messages on some pages. This was a problem for wikis that customized the message. A new change fixed this by using the old messages with one more parameter for customization. Wikis that already changed their customized messages will have to move the customization back again. [35]
Problems
- You will not be able to edit some wikis between 06:00 and 06:30 UTC on 13 June. You can see if your wiki is one of them.
- MassMessage did not work 24–28 May. This is also why last week's Tech News was late. [36]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 5 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 6 June. It will be on all wikis from 7 June (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the Editing team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 5 June at 18:30 (UTC). See how to join.
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 6 June at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- The new filters for edit review tools and interface for watchlists will leave beta. This is planned to happen in June or early July. [37][38]
