RfD close templates

[edit]

Hey, I noticed that you closed a few RfDs yesterday and placed the close template above the relevant subsections' headers. This interferes with the WP:XfDcloser script's section detection; close templates need to go below the relevant subsection header. You may find it easier to use the XfDcloser script yourself, as it takes care of the formatting for you. signed, Rosguill talk 19:05, 19 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I've never used XFDcloser but will look into this tool. Thanks! Ixfd64 (talk) 20:11, 19 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

You do realise that these articles, GNG has not been met, and will not be met. They completely fail criteria for what wikipedia expects an article to be. Govvy (talk) 17:01, 23 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was to keep the article. I should not be going against consensus without a very good reason. Ixfd64 (talk) 18:00, 23 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
O, well, I personally think all the keep arguments were excessively weak and floored. :/ Govvy (talk) 19:03, 23 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Closing this as a soft delete was probably not a great close, because there was already a keep vote, which means a PROD no longer applies anyway. Within half an hour there was a request at WP:REFUND to restore said article. The best option would have been to relist to encourage more discussion or if you absolutely wanted to close it No Consensus. McMatter (talk)/(contrib) 17:49, 23 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I agree it would probably have been better to relist the article. Is there a procedure for reopening a recently closed AfD? Ixfd64 (talk) 18:05, 23 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sure you could revert your close, restore the article and relist instead but I'm not sure if anyone would cry foul or not, I can't see why they would, but you know the world is a crazy place. McMatter (talk)/(contrib) 18:07, 23 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I've restored the article and relisted the AfD. Hope I didn't mess up. Ixfd64 (talk) 18:12, 23 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I added it to todays listings for AFD as well. The only thing you may want to do is go back and edit the relist template to remove the errant noinclude tags and ensure your signature is actually there. McMatter (talk)/(contrib) 18:18, 23 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Done. Looks like {{relist}} needed to be substituted. Ixfd64 (talk) 18:32, 23 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks to both McMatter and Ixfdk64 for making the right suggestion and doing the right thing! As to closing the relisted discussion, I would accept a "no consensus." Larry Grossman (talk) 02:14, 24 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

MfD nomination of MediaWiki:Editinginterface

[edit]

MediaWiki:Editinginterface, a page which you created or substantially contributed to, has been nominated for deletion. Your opinions on the matter are welcome; you may participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/MediaWiki:Editinginterface and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You are free to edit the content of MediaWiki:Editinginterface during the discussion but should not remove the miscellany for deletion template from the top of the page; such a removal will not end the deletion discussion. Then it will be put back. And if it gets removed again, it will get put back again.

If it happens a third time, your interference will be reported under the Three Revert Rule.

If a page is protected as a result, people like us will go on to the next one.

When all of Wikipedia is protected from casual non-member editing, it will just prove what the news says every other day:

1 Wikipedia has been relegated to the lowest realm of infotainment imaginable as no serious research institution permits it to be used as a resource.

2 Wikipedia has long been known to be a very small clique of mostly men mostly between the ages of 25 and 40 and mostly with the same intolerance for the same things.

3 As previously stated, unless you are an administrator in charge, you need to go bother somebody else or risk contributing to the demise of Wikipedia.

Thanks for playing. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 104.218.36.228 (talkcontribs)

Wikipedia has a conspiracy called "Notability". It is used against people that Wikipedia doesn't like such as an A-list Celebrity. The only use for Notability is to censor Superstars and Celebrities. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.103.90.161 (talkcontribs)

Spider articles

[edit]

Hi, please use the World Spider Catalog directly for references to spider species. It is considered the definitive source of spider taxonomy. Using a source that mirrors the WSC risks, as with Gorbiscape agelenoides, using out-of-date information.

A typical reference to the WSC for a species will be of the form:
<ref name=WSC_sID>{{citation |title=Taxon details ''GENUS SPECIES'' AUTH |work=World Spider Catalog |publisher=Natural History Museum Bern |url=https://www.wsc.nmbe.ch/species/ID |access-date=2021-MM-DD }}</ref>

Thanks! Peter coxhead (talk) 09:57, 19 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

By the way, we don't usually create articles for spider subspecies, like Agelena jumbo kiwuensis, unless they are of some special significance. Just list the subspecies at the species article. As it happens, the currently accepted name in the World Spider Catalog for Agelena jumbo is Mistaria jumbo, and Agelena jumbo kiwuensis is accepted as the full species Mistaria kiwuensis, so a move is needed. Peter coxhead (talk) 10:05, 19 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Move now done. Peter coxhead (talk) 13:44, 19 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I created Agelena jumbo kiwuensis as it was a red link from Agelena and listed as a species. This probably explains why there was no entry for it on ITIS. Ixfd64 (talk) 18:22, 19 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately, the species list at Agelena is, right now, out-of-date; there are only 46 accepted species in the genus now. Peter coxhead (talk) 20:25, 19 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Socialism

[edit]

The removal of the paragraph about Suharto from this article is the subject of an ongoing debate on the article Talk page. Please remove the material you restored. I'm not edit warring with anyone. It is a violation of WP:NPOV to include Suharto's anti-socialist killings without including the much more monstrous, many times more numerous pro-socialist killings by Stalin, Mao and Pol Pot. A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. How we will see unregistered users

[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

@MillLocke: We're not concerned about the authorship of the photo. The issue is that the photo is a derivative work of copyrighted elements, in this case the sign and sculpture. It would not be an issue if the source country has "freedom of panorama" for both 2D and 3D artworks, but that is not the case with the United States. Notice

The article Descent (2005 film) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Film appears to fail WP:NFILM as nothing I found in a BEFORE help it pass the guidelines established for notability. Tagged for notability since September 2021.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. PROD'd files

[edit]

Hello, Ixfd64,

I just wanted to thank you for going through file categories and tagging so many unused, personal photos for PROD deletion. They were uploaded during a different time on Wikipedia and it's good that they are starting to be cleared out. I'm not sure how you locate them and I'm sure they are just a drop in the bucket compared to the unused, personal photos on the Commons but I think it's good to get rid of these files that will never be used in articles or even on User pages. Thanks for spending some time on this unglamourous but necessary task! Liz Read! Talk! 19:53, 4 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

No problem!
I've been going through Category:Wikipedia orphaned files in the past few months. Although many of those images could be useful and transferred to Commons, there are also many others whose usefulness is questionable. Ixfd64 (talk) 22:47, 4 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

Query

[edit]

Hello, Ixfd64,

I don't work much with files but I nominated File:Me after a 'shaving accident'.jpeg for FFD. The nomination hasn't generated any discussion but since I saw that you have closed a lot of FFD discussions I'm hoping you could tell me whether a trivial file used on a User page for a lone-gone editor is likely to be deleted. It was declined as a PROD, I think because I said it was a disturbing image and was rejected on grounds of "censorship" but I just don't think it serves any purpose besides a former editor's amusement. Thanks for cluing me in about standards at FFD.. Liz Read! Talk! 00:33, 22 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Good question!
I'm actually not too sure either. With regards to the PROD rationale, I don't believe a "disturbing" image used outside the article space should necessarily be deleted. WP:UPNOT does say user pages should not contain images "that would bring the project into disrepute," but this particular image doesn't really cross the line in my opinion. So the more important question is whether this image is "encyclopedic." We generally do allow established editor to have a personal photograph or two, but this is a bit of a borderline case because the user has made "only" about 450 edits before becoming inactive. I guess we'll have to see how the FfD goes, and use that as a precedent for future cases. Ixfd64 (talk) 05:10, 22 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
