Wikipedia Research Paper
My name is Dale Carty II and I am a cadet at the United States Coast Guard Academy. I am writing a research paper on the mechanics of Wikipedia. I saw your "Wikipedia article traffic statistics" engine which rose a few questions. How are you able to view the amount of visitors to a specific page? Is it possible to find or locate who made corrections to a Wikipedia page? Are there any consequences that occur when people place incorrect information online? Thank you in advance for your timely response.
Very Respectfully, 4/c Carty —Preceding unsigned comment added by DLCarty (talk • contribs) 17:50, 28 April 2011 (UTC)
- The source data that Henrik uses is actually posted by domas, a tech guy for Wikimedia. (You might also be interested in the FAQ for Henrik's tool). Too bad our page view article isn't very explanatory, but it does cover the very basics. To respond to your second question, you can view the "history" tab on any page to see who has made what edits. See also Help:History. As far as people posting incorrect information, on Wikipedia we can block users who continue to post incorrect data after being warned not to. User Based Statistics
Henrik, I was thinking page stats by user would be interesting. For example, aggregated page stats for articles created by a user or change in page stats based on the contributions of a user. Please consider. Thank you! Jasonbook99 (talk) 14:22, 7 May 2011 (UTC)
Stats failure?
Hi Henrik. Do I get it right that there's been a failure of the Stats tool on April 8? Even the Main page shows zero hits for that day. Is there a way to retrieve the hits count for April 8 for a particular article like Iman al-Obeidi, for instance? Regards, Cinosaur (talk) 12:37, 9 April 2011 (UTC)
Main Page and all article traffic statistics
Dear Henrik, Some problem with the Article traffic statistics of Anna Hazare of April 8, 2011. Kindly have a look. Thanks.-- . Shlok talk . 13:53, 9 April 2011 (UTC)
- All stats grok statistics, I think. No stats for the Main Page on April 8, or any other page I see. Maile66 (talk) 14:25, 9 April 2011 (UTC)
Occassional stat failures are common, but not two in a row
Stats are still showing zero, this being the second day in a row. I usually don't even look at stats anymore but I just made a good article and I was watching it's traffic trends for the first week. Daniel Christensen (talk) 03:25, 10 April 2011 (UTC)
Third day in a row, never seen that, can I assume that the stat thing, which has always said is a beta service and may dissappear at anytime, has done just that? Interesting to see how many people count on it, though. Daniel Christensen (talk) 04:13, 11 April 2011 (UTC)
- It was down for several days last month (the posts about it are above on this page). It happens occasionally and then the problem gets fixed. Henrik just doesn't reply here every time someone reports a problem, but he reads the page so I'm sure he's aware of the problems. Just give it a few days, I'm sure it will be back up again. --- Crakkerjakk (talk) 05:07, 11 April 2011 (UTC)
- Since its inception what's been the longest consecutive downtime? Because it's now on day four. When the stats fail, does it stop counting in the middle of a day so the days surrounding the failure are less than the real views? Or is it just all or none? Daniel Christensen (talk) 01:10, 12 April 2011 (UTC)
- Appears that the site where the raw data used to be stored -->http://dammit.lt/wikistats/archive/2011/04/ has been redirected to http://dom.as/. If this was where the toolserver account was pulling the data from, then its not anymore. Calmer Waters 01:42, 12 April 2011 (UTC)
- The raw data is there through. First, you can go to http://dammit.lt/wikistats/ where the raw data is stored. There are 24 files for each day in 1 hour intervals. You can then manually extract the stats for an article, download the files, uncompress them, then using a text editor, find the article in each file. There are two numbers after each article name, the first is the number of page views for that article in that hour. Warning through. The download can take a considerable amount of time. Problem with article statistics page
There seems to be a problem with the article statistics page (http://stats.grok.se/). For the last 4-5 days, every article's page view number has been "0", even for heavily visited articles like Barack Obama. I find it hard to believe that zero people visited the Barack Obama article in the last 5 days. (I read the pageview FAQ, but didn't find any information about why there would be 0 hits). Red links are counted
I think the page view statistics include attempts to view red links. I created a new article (Xenon dioxide) and made 3 edits, and then I looked at the page view statistics and was surprised to find that "this page" (which I created today) was viewed 12 times in the last 30 days, some views 3 weeks ago. The only explanation I can find is that these views were attempts to view the (previously red) link to Xenon dioxide from the dab page at Xenon oxide. Dirac66 (talk) 00:12, 10 May 2011 (UTC)

Halloj!

traffic stats tool is great!
the traffic stats tool is really great, it is a good way to see the changing importance of this or that over time. Better than Google Trends, I think, because it has a much larger dynamic range -- e.g., can detect very low levels of interest. It is also less sensitive to multiple meanings of one term (e.g., two different people with the same name) than Google Trends. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 125.34.52.28 (talk) 01:07, 11 May 2011 (UTC)
Recalculating statistic for top articles - please confirm our methods are correct
Hello Henrik, or Killion dude (since the previous hasn't answered for quite sometime and the later help ;-) . I notice that your top statistic for all wikipedias, or in this case, the English article top statistic - has bias. It doesn't calculate top article that year, it only calculate top article on December 2010. (I checked on the sum and the announcement on top left: "Most viewed articles in 201012" <-- most viewed article on December 2010). So I pay a dude to recalculate the whole year for top 101 manually adding the page view number, and this is what he came up with: (look at the total of the number of January-December 2010): Top 100 article on 2010 Serenity id (talk) 13:56, 13 May 2011 (UTC)

Further information?
Henrik, thank you for a truly wonderful tool. I was wondering if you have any plans to develop it further. My wish would be for some sort of log information that would identify where spikes come from. Some are quite obvious, such as when an article appears on the main page or becomes the subject of a Google Doodle. But other times, an article will suddenly spike to 10x or 20x its normal traffic. Surely, those extra hits are equally the result of some source. Is it possible to show the top 1 - 5 originating sites? Thank you. Marrante (talk) 08:03, 25 May 2011 (UTC)

Restoring a page
Hi Henrik I really need your help. I am very new to Wiki and not quite sure what I am doing. A page Carbon Trade Exchange was deleted for two reasons the name of the user account was too similar to the name of the company and also because it was written in a format where it was more of an advertisement.
I really would like this page to be restored because I feel this is an interesting subject to be talked about, particularly with what is happening in Australia and the carbon tax. I know that it needs to be more neutral and I think I can help with that, but until it is restored I cannot do anything about it.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Kind regards

Article Statistics for 1 day?
Hi! I found your article statistics tool on the toolserver, so I thought you might be right person to contact. I am trying to get an understanding of the most popular articles on Wikipedia (specifically, frwiki, although any will do). I have found tools that will tell me how many times a given article has been read when provided a date range, but this is not quite what I want. Rather, I am looking for something like "for each article in all the frwiki articles, how many times as each article accessed on August 18, 2010"
Do you know if there is a way to obtain this data? Thanks in advance for your help! --Nemilar (talk) 03:05, 10 July 2011 (UTC)

Hello Henrik,
My name is Jason (Birdman604). I am having licensing issues. How do I create an online license for a picture? Btw, I think your site www.grok.se is fantastic! One suggestion, it would be really useful to be able to track by day, month, quarter and year.
I look forward to hearing from you.

your Pageviews Statistics Tool
Hello Henrik !
I would like to know why there are regularly some missing days in your Tool concerning the French wikipedia pages whereas it works for English wikipages.
Examples : On the 3 July 2011
http://stats.grok.se/fr/201107/France
http://stats.grok.se/fr/201107/Vince_Clarke
How to fix it ?? Is it possible to restore the lost data from the 3 July ?
In advance I thank you for your answer. Best Regards,

Bot on stats
If an automated bot edits a page, does that show up as a view on the stats? Rcsprinter (talk) 11:44, 10 July 2011 (UTC)
- I think no edits will count as pageviews, so a page could be edited 100x times using http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Blanket&action=edit, but even though accessed 100x times, I think it would show only 1 pageview, from displaying the page before the first edit. If you want to read a rare page without adding to a pageview count, then edit it by "&action=edit" (without the initial view, then once inside edit, do a "Show preview" without saving). -Wikid77 16:09, 14 July 2011 (UTC)
Overall statistics of views
In Wikipedia article traffic statistics File:Zaragoza shel.JPG from Commons has 30 views in 2011-07. In English Wiki it has the name File:... (149 views in 2011-07), in Russian Wiki - Файл:...(64 views in 2011-07), in Spanish Wiki - Archivo:...(182 views in 2011-07), etc. Please tell me
- how to see the views number of the same file in all Wikis by one click.
- how to see the views number for all the months--Владимир Шеляпин (talk) 10:52, 14 July 2011 (UTC)
- As you might know, the stats are an informal display, based on data stored as numbers. Other people (such as User:Killiondude) have different tools which read those same pageview database numbers and can show counts rather than the histogram bargraphs. To display all months for a prior year, just leave the "/0x" month out of the URL, such as: http://stats.grok.se/en/2010/Blanket for article "Blanket" in 2010, but shows only 11 months because November 2010 was omitted, so get the 11th month, by showing: http://stats.grok.se/en/2010/11/Blanket. This stats.grok.se is an informal service, so that is why the data in incomplete for year 2010. Also, the data for year 2011 has not been totalled, yet, so trying to get the whole-year results for 2011 will only show "0" as the result of all months in 2011. For more details, see: User:Killiondude/stats. -Wikid77 (talk) 15:59, 14 July 2011 (UTC)
- Hi. I don't have tool of my own, I just took a lot of frequently asked questions on henrik's talk page and created an FAQ of sorts. But to answer your first question, Vlad, there's no way to do that presently. The way things are arranged currently, the stats are getting pageview data by URL. So if they view a file hosted on Commons on any local wiki it will take into account the en.wikipedia.org url rather than the commons.wikimedia.org url. But I agree that it would be nice to know global file view data. Killiondude (talk) 18:08, 14 July 2011 (UTC)

Harpers Bazar 1860's and 70's
Hi Henrik,
I was searching for information about this publication as I have about 100 of them. some still cottoned together as they were shipped out to New Zealand and Australia in the sailing ships in the 1870's. As many are in pristine condition, I have been looking for some reference point to find out if they are rare, their value, and if there is interest in them. I even have a Christmas issue that has colour. Thank you for your efforts, and I would look forward to your comments. - Check ebay and abebooks.com to see if anyone is selling (or has sold, ebay has history) some specific issues which you have. The value to a true collector is in the set, too often people destroy irreplaceable, finite editions of works to, for example, sell "authentic 18th century print"s. Auction houses also run specialty theme auctions, you might look for those in locales which have reputations as being "bookish." PЄTЄRS

Query About Article Stats
Dear Henrik, your article stats are an invaluable resource for the Wikipedia community. Many thanks for creating and maintaining them and please keep up with the good work.
I have a question about them though: do they count multiple accesses from the same IP address during the day or not. The reason for asking this is that I created and have been maintaining a page about business informatics (İşletme enformatiği) in Turkish. From time to time, I get heavily involved with the page and coincidentally I observe spikes on these days's data.

Re Gjeke Marinaj's page
Hi Henrik,
Can you please fix the page view statistics for Gjeke Marinaj. The problem is that he has two different page view statistics; one under the name Gjeke Marinaj (247 views) and the other under the name Gjekë Marinaj (427 views). I tried to fix it but obviously I do not know how. To see this go under the bars and in the “Enter another Wikipedia article title” delete the ë and replace it with an e without the dots and press: go.
I thought you might be able to fix this problem so his views are combined into one page view.

Article Validation
Hello Henrik,
I´m new in Wikipedia and need your help in one question, please. I have just edited a new article (Battle of Toro, August 10). I say new because I deleted completely the previous one (a stub). My username is Hispanicultur.
My question is: how can I know if the article I edited is or will be approved by any one with power to do it? Is there any limit of time? I think I read about 60 days. Should I contact any of the editors of that page and ask their approval? I will appreciate an answer from you.
Thanks.
PS: Can you answer me to my email? evoefernandes@yahoo.com ( I don’t know how to work with templates and so I have/had to ask someone to do it for me). Thank you again! ----Hispanicultur (talk) 13:17, 18 August 2011 (UTC)
Unique Visitors vs Page Views
Question for you, does your wiki hit counter script do Unique Visitors (counted only once) or does it just count page views? I'm guessing that since you named it pageview counter, that its page views and not unique visits but since this isn't addressed in your FAQ, could you clarify this? Excellent and resourceful script, btw, thanks for writing it and making it available. Jason (talk) 03:49, 21 August 2011 (UTC)

Pageviews statistic tool - traffic source diversification
Hey Henrik, I found your statistics tool some does ago and was wondering, if there is also data available, in which the different traffic sources are distinguished. I'm especially interested in the traffic attributed to search engines (mainly google) to compare the numbers to googles offical traffic tool ( https://adwords.google.de/select/KeywordToolExternal ). This would be incredible useful for online marketeres. But since wikipedia is cited a lot in the web, I can take the raw number of your tool only as an upper bound for traffic that might come via seach engines.
I took a look into your sources ( http://dammit.lt/wikistats/ ) but this seems to be only the raw number of pageviews per page...
Any help would be greatly appreciated ;)

Incoherence pages views / article rank
Just to let you know I think there might be some small bug in your article ranking logic. For example:
- Cell_(biology) has been viewed 120328 times in 201108. This article ranked 3342 in traffic on en.wikipedia.org.
- Medicine has been viewed 79805 times in 201108. This article ranked 2899 in traffic on en.wikipedia.org.
The latter has a smaller number of counts but a "better" ranking.
Probably not very important but I thought I'd let you know.
Thanks for a really great tool!
PS: or could it be that ranking is based on bytes transfered and that therefore article size acts as a multiplier? Anyway, great tool, thanks again.

Page views for the current year?
For an article like laundry symbol one can view the page views per month for august or september it works alright. But if page views for the current year 2011 is requested then, there's nothing. But another year like 2010 works alright. Could you fix stats for the current year? Another neat number in the page views would be the mean number of page views. - For what it's worth, I've noticed incorrect data on a minor level for a long time. By that I'm talking about pages that average under a hundred hits a day. Some days, the exact number of hits register two or more days in a row. I'll test it by adding a random number of extra hits on my own. And, yet, it still does that repetition error. And after a few days, the stats go up or down. I think either the source data or the tool is not 100% accurate all the time.Maile66 (talk) 15:13, 14 September 2011 (UTC)

deletion of Letter to Hillary Clinton
Hello Henrik, could you please lend a hand with my, continuing problems with getting a new article up, I wrote the page first and then adjusted the main page of Rick Perry for reflect the same wording. I would like your hep to recreate the letter.
Since you seem to be from Sweden, I have a question about Wikileaks,
Lastly do you remember this,
http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2011/mar/17/us-spy-operation-social-networks
Military's 'sock puppet' software creates fake online identities to spread pro-American propaganda
The article of course notes the use of fake accounts for American purposes and I believe naturally that other countries could use the same tactic to influence American elections
The reason I mention it is noted on the Discussion page of Rick Perry

Why are there views showing for non-existent articles?
I have just added a new article Randall Denley to Wikipedia, but was surprised to find out it already had some views recorded before I created it: http://stats.grok.se/en/latest/Randall_Denley Just curious why that is? Ottawahitech (talk) 17:21, 17 September 2011 (UTC)
- Were there red-links from other articles to this article before you created it? I think clicks to red-linked (non-existent) articles are recorded as well. —Bruce1eetalk 07:37, 18 September 2011 (UTC)
- In the last couple of days I tried to add some wikilinks (so that I could build an article), but they were promptly removed. - That's because the article existed back then; it was deleted on July 20 (see here). —Bruce1eetalk 05:01, 19 September 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks so much for the information. Is there a way to find out also what were the contents of the old deleted article? I ask because Randall Denley is threatened with deletion, once more, even though it has had over 300 views in the last couple of days. Not too shabby for a stub that has only been up for 4 days in my experience. Ottawahitech (talk) 05:16, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

The article about Randall Denley was deleted/redirected as a result of an AFD on Sept 25. I just noticed traffic to this article started building up again on Sept 27 and the Sept views now total 2,120. Can anyone here explain this mystery? Ottawahitech (talk) 12:07, 30 September 2011 (UTC)
- I don't think there's anything unusual about this. The article still exists (albeit as a redirect), and people are still hitting on it. It could also be a carryover from the AFD – even though the debate is closed, people are still interested in the results. —Bruce1eetalk 12:27, 30 September 2011 (UTC)

The page Mathematical_descriptions_of_opacity, an article rated low importance in Wikiproject physics, is credited with the most views of any physics article—by a factor of 10. That doesn't make any sense. RockMagnetist (talk) 16:50, 11 October 2011 (UTC)
I love your "Page View Statistics" report
But it does not seem to be updated much any more. The figures have been the same since last Friday on articles I've worked on such as Equal opportunity. Do you have to program the Page View Statistics tool manually? Is there anything I can do to help (I'm not much of a programmer). I would love for the feature to display the daily page view statistics somewhere on the article's face (so, I didn't have to click "History", then "Page View statistics") or if there was some other way in which I could automatically check readership levels of the articles I've worked on. Again, thanks for making this tool!--Tomwsulcer (talk) 15:52, 12 October 2011 (UTC)

1 day missing in the great pageviews statistics tool
Hi Henrik,
Your pageviews statistics tool is great, and I periodically check it in the "Southamerica Life Quality Rankings" article I created. It worked perfect until almost 1 month ago, then somehow it stopped providing daily statistics, then it went back, but now it seems that 1 day is missing, overlapped or something else, not knowing if it’s the last day or some previous one.
The way to check what I say is opening the 30 continuous days original graph, which supposedly shows statistics until yesterday (September 20 in today’s case), but then when you check the current month statistics graph (201109 and "Go") the data exist only until September 19, which value is the same value the first graph shows for September 20, and where September 1 value is the one showed as September 2 value in the first graph. So far as I understand, correct August 31 value is indeed 178 in this article case and one September value is missing.
Southamerica2010 (talk) 14:18, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
- The monthly figures appear to be one day off. Compare this with this. The view counts are the same in both graphs, but displaced by a day. See also this post above. —Bruce1eetalk 14:32, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
I checked a couple of minutes ago and now both graphs are displaced by 2 days. Southamerica2010 (talk) 23:06, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for that. I don't know what's going on now. Henrik hasn't been active here since March this year and a few of us have been trying to contact him, but we have to remember that this is a personal project of his that he has kindly made public. —Bruce1eetalk 05:39, 22 September 2011 (UTC)
- An additional detail about the displacement: the WP article about the order op operations, a school topic, should receive less page views on saturdays and sundays. But in this graph the minimum is displaced to Friday and Saturday, and in this graphit is displaced to Sunday and Monday. Ceinturion (talk) 21:20, 24 September 2011 (UTC)
- Today I tried the stats programme on articles in several WPs, but the search always resulted in a total blank. What is happening? -- 79.168.88.85 (talk) 13:53, 22 September 2011 (UTC)
- Which articles and which WPs are you looking at? —Bruce1eetalk 14:22, 22 September 2011 (UTC)
Thanks to Southamerica and to Bruce Lee for this information. I noticed myself a couple of weeks ago that the stats looked "funny". However, someone gave it a nudge and the system worked OK for a few days, but now we are back to a situation where the bars are not updating, but simply sliding forward to make it look like the tool is working, when in fact it is not. Yes, Henrik did a fantastic job, but isn't it time for Wikipedia to start officially supporting this wonderful tool? Ottawahitech (talk) 01:36, 23 September 2011 (UTC)

Invalid page view statistics
As Henrik hasn't been around since march 2011. I just want to make others to be aware of that the diagrams for the "latest" views displays inaccurate data. As an example the /latest/ shows 929 views 11 oct, and 1100 views 12 oct. But /201110/ shows 929 views 6 oct, and 1100 views 7 oct. So:
- There has been no data collection since 2011-10-07
- The /latest/ view lacks data validation

- Looking thru Henrik's FAQs, I found another way to get pageview stats but it is not as easy-to-read: alternate pageview tool. Right now it's programmed to do stats for Equal opportunity but other articles could presumably be checked. - You're welcome. What I've been doing is taking the monthly totals, and averaging them to get a count of average page views per day. I think it is an important statistic which is underused. I'd love it to be more prominent, so anybody reading an article could get a sense of how many other people are looking at it that day. Articles with heavy readership tend to be (in my view) more accurate, better written, more informative. I'd also love some kind of tool which helped us contributors learn how many people (in total, by article, by month, by year possibly) had read our writings. So, I could say, hey guess what, 20 million people have read my stuff. That sort of thing. Even the knowledge of that I would find motivating.--Tomwsulcer (talk) 02:44, 13 October 2011 (UTC)

It's a great pity that the counter is no longer functioning. I have happily and regularly used it to stay informed of the hit count for certain pages. Perhaps it will start working again some time? I would be happy about that. Rumiton (talk) 04:27, 15 October 2011 (UTC)
The data source dammit.lt (Lithuania) for stats.grok.se is down it seems. Thus stats.grok.se likely works, but don't get any raw data. Others:
- http://www.wikiroll.com/ - Most popular articles of the day
- http://toolserver.org/~johang/wikitrends/english-uptrends-this-week.html - Utrend, seems to work
- http://toolserver.org/~emw/wikistats/ - non-working now
- Wikipedia:Statistics - various metainfo
- https://wiki.toolserver.org/view/Database_access#Database_names - databases available for toolserver users
So the data is there, but we can't access it. Best hope seems to be an yet unknown toolserver service, in case anyone could find one? Electron9 (talk) 17:19, 14 October 2011 (UTC)
- Don't forget this alternate pageview tool -- just substitute the name of the article in the box and you should get numbers on the left hand side; the bar chart is somewhat hard to read.--Tomwsulcer (talk) 19:06, 14 October 2011 (UTC)
